Chapter Text
For the longest of times, Jimin always thought that she was a confident and independent woman. She never really needed anyone by her side to navigate the messy flow that is life, and is proud to say that until then, she managed this like a champ.
Keyword, ‘until then’.
Because during her third year of college, Jimin met the one person who made her question all of her self-confident and proud independent beliefs. Kim Minjeong, aka the human embodiment of a grumpy and affectionate puppy. Like, literally! Jimin never met a human-being who actually loves belly rubs and walks in the park as much as this woman!
And ever since she met this strange girl, Jimin’s world has been turned upside down. Because obviously, like any other cliché story, they met at a crappy college party, ended up in the same friends group and before they knew it, they confessed to each other at the same time in the most cliché way, and eventually became girlfriends. Which was and is awesome in Jimin’s eyes!
Minjeong might be a strange girl, but she’s one hell of a beautiful one! Like, as beautiful as Nanako from her favorite cartoon Crayon Shin-chan, who is the one character who completely shaped Jimin’s type in women. So to say that Minjeong is basically like Nanako, means that Minjeong is a hundred percent Jimin’s type, both on the outside and on the inside, of course. She’s not a superficial person after all!
And so far, their relationship has been a pure bliss. Minjeong was like an angel to her. The two women were joined to the hip, and spent their whole free time together. Minjeong always took the time to bring some pastries to Jimin each day after her own classes, and always made sure to bless her with evening cuddles every single day.
If there was a ranking of the best girlfriend on the planet, Minjeong would definitely be in first place, without any doubt!
Alas, it would be naive to think that life is a tranquil flow, filled with happy and innocent moments. Because around two years after they started dating, a tragedy fell upon their sweet couple.
The big and terrifying monster. Long-distance.
It had all happened so fast as well. The second Jimin graduated from college, she found a comfortable job, and was excited to eventually move in with Minjeong, who is still in college since she’s younger than Jimin by a year. But around the same time, Minjeong’s teacher gave her a once in a lifetime opportunity to go study in New York for her last year of college. And being the supportive girlfriend that she is, Jimin had obviously encouraged Minjeong to go for it.
Because loving her also means wanting the best for her. And there was no way Jimin would selfishly tell the younger woman to let go of this opportunity and stay, as much as she wanted to. Because she knows that Minjeong would have abandoned everything in a heartbeat for her. But Jimin wants the absolute best for her, because she deserves it more than anyone.
And that’s how they found themselves in a long-distance relationship, with a sweet fourteen hours of time difference between them. But until then, they honestly had handled it like pros. Since Jimin works as a freelance graphic designer, her working hours are pretty flexible, meaning that she actually managed to be up when Minjeong was, and to sleep when she was. It probably wasn’t the healthiest setting for her body, but she only needed to endure it for a small year.
(Even if she would do this for the rest of her life if it meant being able to spend time with Minjeong like this.)
Keyword here again, ‘until then’.
That weekend, Jimin was finally free. Like fully fully free. She had been waiting all day long to finally be able to FaceTime with Minjeong, and was so excited for it! But the world was definitely against her.
The second she tried to call her girlfriend, her WiFi crashed. At first, she thought that it was a simple bug, like it can usually happen. So Jimin unplugged and plugged her WiFi box to see if things would get back to normal, like they often do.
Spoiler: it didn’t.
She doesn’t know who the hell might have cursed her, but she might just have to hunt them down for this offense.
She always praised herself for being someone full of composure, and who definitely doesn’t need her phone to survive. But people usually boast about hardships they have never endured, and only realize how hard it actually is to live through them when said hardships do happen to them.
Because right now, Jimin definitely cannot live without her phone, and is also definitely losing all of her composure. But she was being a tad too dramatic there. In our modern times, when WiFi is an issue, people usually resort to using their data. And obviously, that was Jimin’s next course of action.
If only the walls of her brand-new apartment weren’t so thick! Like sure, it’s a bliss to not hear her potential loud neighbors, as well as the bustling street right under her. But those thick walls are also refraining her from receiving any 5G signals.
Great. Just wonderful!
In the matter of a few seconds, on the day she had awaited the most, Jimin suddenly found herself completely disconnected from the whole world, but most importantly from her dear girlfriend, who was most likely waiting for her call.
And no, a phone call definitely wasn’t the solution. Because one, she’s a broke artist who can’t afford it, even if she would steal the moon for Minjeong. And two, she wants to see her girlfriend’s adorable face dammit!
At that point, Jimin was already seeing herself balding, and becoming a monk. Maybe a spiritual retreat was a good idea after all. Humans of the modern times can’t catch any breaks, and almost everyone goes through burnouts at some point. Maybe those monks were right all along! And maybe Jimin should join them. At this point, she was already one of those boys anyways…
But Jimin also has something called stubbornness. Like, she won’t give up if she doesn’t exactly get what she wants, and especially when Minjeong is on the line! Because damn, she really felt like a soldier’s wife waiting for her husband to come back from the war at that point!
So she tried to repair her WiFi by any means. Which involves endlessly unplugging and plugging the cable from the power outlet, looking at the box’s notice a hundred times to make sure she got all the steps down, having two or three mental breakdowns in the process, seriously thinking of smashing the box with a baseball bat, before eventually giving up and just calling a technician to help fishing her out from her internet-less drought.
And she managed to find a kind savior! Who will approximately take… four hours to arrive, since apparently she isn’t the only person with such an issue in her area. But at that point, she didn’t really care. She just wants to contact her girlfriend dammit!
Jimin stayed there, pathetically waiting crossed legged in front of the door, for who knows how long. She was truly becoming a monk, she wasn’t lying at all! She spent all of that time self-reflecting, thinking of greater times where WiFi wasn’t an issue, where she wasn’t so dependent on something she thought would always be there.
But eventually, the bell rang. Jimin jumped on her two feet at lightning speed, and dashed to open the door, expecting to see her savior, aka Mister WiFi technician. But instead, she saw her girlfriend(???).
Did her small monk journey actually made her go insane, at the point of seeing her girlfriend, who’s supposed to be in New York, right in front of her?
“I’m home baby!” happily shouted Minjeong, who appeared blissfully unaware of Jimin’s pain and confusion.
Jimin felt arms wrapping around her body, but still couldn’t understand what the hell was happening. And apparently, the lack of answer was enough to intrigue Minjeong, who took a step back, before softly cupping Jimin’s cheeks in her hands.
“Hey, are you okay?”
Jimin blinked once. Twice. Thrice.
Okay, Minjeong was somehow still here.
“W-Why are you here?” she managed to blurt out, her brain still clouded by utter bafflement.
“Is that the first thing you should be saying after not seeing me in real life for like six months?” pouted Minjeong, obviously disappointed by Jimin’s lack of reaction. And that’s when the gears finally turned in Jimin’s mind.
Her girlfriend is here.
She’s here!
Jimin lunged at Minjeong, wrapping two messy arms around the woman’s smaller frame. “Oh my gosh Minjeongie you’re here!”
Minjeong, who somehow didn’t look too shocked by Jimin’s sudden change in demeanor, lightly patted the woman’s back, snickering. “Took you long enough!”
“I’m sorry, it’s just… I’m surprised to see you here!” cried Jimin, elated to finally be able to hold her girlfriend in her arms. “I tried to contact you but I didn’t have any WiFi! I fought against it, almost took a baseball bat to break the box because I couldn’t get the damn thing to work, and even the data was against me! I’m so sorry I didn’t want to ignore you, I swear! The world was against me, and I don’t know who cursed me but I swear I’m gonna find them and-”
Minjeong stopped her ramble with a small and giggly peck, which seemed to have effectively worked.
“I’ll stop you right there champ,” said Minjeong, her face betraying her happiness and her fondness in front of Jimin’s usual display of loserness. “My phone has been off the whole day, because I wanted to surprise you.” She tenderly kissed the tip of Jimin’s nose. “So I didn’t even know that you tried to contact me. So don’t be too harsh on yourself, okay?”
Jimin’s jaw comically fell after learning this strange but important piece of information. She has been fighting a losing battle against her new nemesis, her WiFi box, for a good four hours just to contact Minjeong, whose phone was off in any cases because she was planning on surprising her?
“What the…”
Jimin thinks that she is slowly but surely starting to grow insane. Because who in their right mind goes from being a monk, to becoming almost hysterical in the matter of a few seconds?
The world owes her at least twenty paid therapy sessions for the events she has just gone through!
She pointed an accusatory finger right in Minjeong’s face, who looked at her with big confused but amused eyes. “You owe me at least a thousand kisses for this offense!”
Minjeong laughed, and lifted her hands in the air. “Alright, I guess I’m guilty.” Her expression then immediately switched from amusement to mischief. “Time to give you what I owe you then.”
She dangerously inched closer to Jimin, wrapping a confident arm around Jimin’s waist, before deposing a light and saccharine kiss on Jimin’s lips. Then another one, more passionate this time. And another one, longer. And-
The bell suddenly rang, making the two women abruptly step away from each other, their breath heavy from the growing heat between them.
Behind the door, a masculine voice could be heard. “Excuse me? I’m here to repair the WiFi!”
Just when Jimin lost all of her interest in the WiFi, this scoundrel came back to interrupt her lovely moment with her girlfriend! She swears that she will make it pay, no matter what.
But at least, Minjeong is here now. And that’s all that matters. Although, their small redemption session would have to be postponed for a few more minutes, at least until this damned WiFi would finally be repaired!
