Faded white ribbon clouds were spread on the orange sky as the sun was slowly setting. The summer air was still enough to keep every living creature warm as the festive lights were bright enough to prevent darkness from spreading in the big and busy town. It was the season to be outside until midnight and take long walks along the colorful stalls set up by people selling everything from candy to snacks to cold beverages to tickets to try your luck at shooting targets to win prizes or small plastic pools filled with fish that you can catch.

“Ah, humans are doing something fun again.” He said out loud as he was sitting on top of a small hill looking over the city. Long white hair was falling down his shoulders and his legs were dangling gently from the hill. He leaned a little gripping the ground to support himself and watched closely what the people were doing. Even though he was a fox god who usually spent his time in the forest protecting the land and away from any form of human interaction, he loved summer festivals. His duties generally did not allow him to leave the forest, but a few hours would not do any harm. He was wearing a long white yukata with red and black embroidery and waraji for easier movement since it was summer. He preferred switching to his human form when he was out of the forest just in case someone got lost and wouldn’t get scared of his god form. As stoic and cool as he usually seemed around other gods or intimidating to the people who visited his shrine, he had a soft spot for humans and wanted to protect them from any harm.

The more he watched the more he wanted to be in the crowd too and enjoy the noises and the bright lights and maybe taste the street foods. The offerings humans were leaving by his shrine were too bland or just fruits. He heard of the salty snacks humans were having and dreamed about eating some too.

As he was day dreaming watching the humans he spotted someone in the crowd. It was a human boy with short dark hair wearing a long t-shirt and a pair of jeans walking as his friends were gesturing at him to hurry his pace.

The fox god perked his ears as his curiosity was growing. Something about that human was intriguing but he couldn’t figure out why.

“Hurry up, Chinen!” one of the human’s friends yelled.

“I’m coming!” Chinen mumbled back as he sighed and walked a little faster than before. He was very tired from rehearsals the night before and now he had to endure all the noise and rustle of a summer festival. He was a dancer and was preparing for a big show and had been very stressed because of it, which was why his friends insisted on taking him to the festival to enjoy a little break. Before knowing, he lost his friends in the crowd.  He ran a hand through his hair and stopped by a stand selling gyoza. He bought some and then lazily made his way through the crowd, munching on the hot dumplings.  He was too focused on the food in his hands that he bumped into someone. He stopped and looked up to see a beautiful man staring into his eyes. Chinen held his breath in surprise for a second before stepping away from the man. He almost tripped on a little pebble on the ground but luckily the man in front of him was quick enough to grab his arm and pull him against his chest, wrapping one arm around his waist while the other one was gently holding his arm.

Chinen let out a surprised sound. They were standing in the middle of the crowd but in the second it felt like no one was around. Chinen quickly pulled away and stood on his feet.

“Thank you, you saved me there.” He said as he took one look at the man.

He had long white hair gathered in a low ponytail with two strands left to frame his chiseled yet soft face. He was a very beautiful man wearing a yukata. Chinen found himself staring at the man and when he realized that he quickly looked away hiding his blush.

The man let out a soft laugh seeing his reaction.

“I’m glad I showed up in time to save you.” He said smiling his eyes never leaving the short man in front of him. “Is that gyoza good?” he continued softly.

Chinen cleared his throat trying to make his blush go away.

“Yeah, would you like some?”

The beautiful man gently grabbed his hand surprising Chinen and started walking him outside of the crowd. Any sane human would protest and refuse to follow a strange man but, for some reason Chinen felt drawn to that man and safe around him. Somehow all the tiredness he was feeling faded away and he felt weirdly refreshed and calm. He found himself blindly following the man to a quiet place in the park, behind some stands, with enough light to see each other since it was getting darker.

The man saw a bench and sat together on it. He turned to face Chinen who had a piece of the gyoza he bought, held by a toothpick and leaned in to take a bite out of it, making him blush at the proximity.

The man let out a satisfied sound as he was munching, and his eyes grew wider as he experienced the flavors of the filling.

Chinen watched him closely before bursting into laughter.

The man stopped and looked at him confused.

“Sorry, you just look like it’s your first time eating gyoza. Are you maybe a foreigner?” Chinen asked, leaning closer to look at his face. His dark eyes stared right into his own as his lips curved into a smile. Even though it was getting darker outside something about his presence made him shine bright in Chinen’s eyes. The man softly touched his cheek letting his fingertips brush against his skin. The dark haired man’s eyes widen in surprise. He pulled away feeling embarrassed for staring at him.

“I did not get the chance to ask for your name.”

The beautiful man smiled and leaned in bringing his lips closer to his ear, whispering his name softly, making Chinen’s entire face red and hot.

“Ryosuke.” He said and pulled away.

“Ryosuke…” Chinen repeated. That was a very common name for someone who did not look like an average person. He looked like a human but something about him felt so extraterrestrial almost.

“Tonight has been a delight. I’m very glad I came.” Ryosuke said looking at the sky and taking a deep breath as he turned his back on the bench leaning on the hard wood. “It is my first time attending a summer festival.” He continued.

“What? You’ve never been to one before?” Chinen asked surprised. “Is this your first time in Japan?”

Ryosuke chuckled. “No, I’ve lived here all my life.”

“Then how come? Are you a rich family’s sheltered kid?”

Ryosuke laughed a little louder at Chinen’s questions. If only he could tell Chinen the truth.

“Nope. I never got the chance to come. But I’m glad I did tonight because I got to meet you.” Ryosuke said looking back at Chinen.

Chinen’s heartbeats every time Ryosuke looked at him felt as if he was running a marathon and did not have time to catch his breath. He cleared his throat again and stood up from the bench.

“Ok then, if it’s your first time then let me accompany you and show you all the good spots!” Chinen said extending his arm at him.

Ryosuke blinked before laughing and put his hand in his standing up. He confidently entwined his fingers with Chinen’s as they started walking back to the stands.

Chinen’s face felt on fire as Ryosuke stopped by a stand with sweets. He ordered some dango and pulled out his wallet to pay for both skewers before he could even think of refusing. They continued walking and Ryosuke would stop by a bunch of food stands and buy in pairs and hand Chinen half each time.

After he was satisfied, they stopped on a bench to eat everything. Ryosuke’s facial expressions every time he tried new food were so entertaining that Chinen found himself studying his every move. He started giggling, causing Ryosuke to look up in confusion at him.

“I’m sorry, you are just so cute, like a child,” Chinen said without thinking.

Ryosuke looked at him before his lips formed a mischievous smile. He leaned closer to Chinen’s face and captured his lips in a short peck stopping him from laughing.

“W-Why did you do that?!” Chinen yelled, his face turning as red as the strawberry in his daifuku.

Ryosuke smiled smugly at him before his lips returned to his for a longer kiss. He put a hand on the back of Chinen’s neck pulling him closer. The man immediately melted into the kiss and closed his eyes. Ryosuke tasted like a dango. He placed his hands on his chest for support and Ryosuke deepened the kiss opening Chinen’s mouth.

The short haired man pulled away to catch his breath. His eyes followed Ryosuke’s glistening eyes.

Attraction was a very sinful emotion that Ryosuke was feeling for the human man in front of him but somehow it felt more than just a simple addition to kissing a beautiful human. Feelings of love were sprouting in him more than he had imagined.

His initial plan was to go down and look around, maybe spy on the human that caught his eye, but it somehow escalated into him actually kissing him. And he couldn’t stop doing that, so he pulled Chinen back for another kiss.

He hugged Chinen as they were kissing almost pleading him to not let go or vanish from his sight but, fortunately Chinen wanted the same and tried matching the intensity.

The human was also enchanted by that mysterious man the minute their eyes met. He did not need to know more about him to understand that he wanted to stay by his side for as long as possible.

Ryosuke’s fingers brushed through Chinen’s hair tucking it gently behind his ear before he leaned in to place one chaste kiss on his ear making Chinen giggle at the tickling sensation.

Maybe it was the summer heat or the festival atmosphere blurring both of their senses and making them get lost in their instincts and giving in the sweet love, but it was something about that night that felt magical to both. No regrets were shared, only kisses and smiles.

Summer and time in general might as well have stopped then and there for the two of them.

Notes:

I've been listening to Hana Ichi Monme like a mad person and I couldn't get this idea out of my head.
Hopefully I did the thoughts in my mind palace justice and everything makes sense in this short story with no background whatsoever hahaha.
Also, it feels good to be back writing fics. I hope I will have more urges to write another one soon.
Thank you for reading this one!!
