Work Text:

"I can't believe we both slept through the fireworks," Samekichi said, not doing anything to mask the scowl on his face. The last few explosions had woken him and Wadanohara up after they had both fallen asleep on top of each other.

"We did both tire ourselves out today," Wadanohara said, dusting off her white sundress.

"And whose fault was that," Samekichi replied sarcastically.

"Mine?" Wadanohara said, looking down at the floor, wringing the fabric of her skirt in her hands.

"What? No!" Samekichi blurted out loud. The last thing he wanted was for Wadanohara to feel like this was her fault, even if he didn't like the idea of the great Sea Witch still being the town's errand girl. "Irena. I-re-na. It's her fault."

"It is not Irena's fault for not being able to come to the surface. We have had this conversation more times than I can count, Samekichi," Wadanohara said, her voice taking on a stern tone. Now it felt like he was the one being scolded. He guessed that was a better outcome than Wadanohara being too harsh on herself.

"No matter what, we both missed the fireworks. Sorry."

"There's nothing else we can do about it, so let's just head home," Wadanohara said, heading in the direction of the island they were on's beach. "There's always next time," she turned around and smiled. In that moment Samekichi resolved to get Wadanohara her fireworks display even if he had to turn back the hands of time all by himself.

On the beach, Samekichi became very preoccupied with the sand that crunched below them. He wasn't a big fan of sand, it got everywhere. Couldn't it be a little less messy? Or coarse, rough, not to mention irritating? What was even more irritating was the junk people left behind on this beach.

"Samekichi? Can we clean up this beach a little?" Wadanohara said with two grabbers and some bags that she no doubt manifested through magic while be wasn't looking.

"Honestly? I was annoyed by how messy it is too." Samekichi stepped closer and took a grabber and a bag from his girlfriend. He squeezed the trigged on the grabber and picked up a can into his garbage bag. He watched out of the corner of his eye as Wadanohara started to do the same. "Not the kind of date night you were expecting, huh?" He said, before grabbing an empty paper plate and putting that in his bag as well.

Wadanohara laughed, "Since when have we ever been normal?"

"Does it bother you?"

"Seriously speaking, it bothered me when we were apart, that we couldn't have a normal confession, or a normal first kiss. But now I'm happy for every strange moment we've had together, because I had them with you."

"That's good," Samekichi said, as he watched Wadanohara grab a water bottle. "Actually, why aren't we using magic for this?" Things would go by a lot faster if they did.

"It just seemed more satisfying to do it myself. I'm just like anyone else, after all," Wadanohara said, smiling to herself as she spoke.

"Then we'll clean it up by--" Samekichi spotted an opened pack of sparklers. He bent down to pick it up. The box was a bright blue, with a red starry shape that indicated that these things could ignite around what Samekichi could only assume was the word "sparklers." There were still a fair amount left in there. "Wadanohara, check this out."

She walked over while multitasking by cleaning up the garbage around her. "What is it?"

"I found a pack of sparklers. Someone left it here."

"Let me throw it out--"

Samekichi held the box above his head. "Let's keep it."

Wadanohara grabbed it with her grabber, which Samekichi did not account for. "Eh? It's litter. We don't need that in the house."

"We can use them today," Samekichi said, "After we're done?"

Wadanohara squinted, her face scrunching up, "If you really want to..." She relaxed the grip on her grabber's trigger, and moved it out of the way. "Let's just remember to throw them away when we're done."

Samekichi smiled triumphantly. He wished he had his jacket, so he could let the pack hang out of his pocket there, but the one on the back of his jeans could suffice. "Let's finish this up."

Wadanohara nodded, "Race you," she said, and Samekichi laughed, Wadanohara made him feel younger than he did when he was young.

"It's on."

Samekichi pulled out a sparkler and handed it to Wadanohara. "To the winner goes the spoils, or something like that," he said. He'd get to go twice, and she'd get to go three times. He truly underestimated how fast she could be at this, and as a result, Wadanohara had picked up more garbage, winning their impromptu contest.

Wadanohara lifted her hand to the end of her sparkler. "My fire magic is embarrassing..."

"If it sets stuff on fire, then it sets stuff on fire, right?"

Wadanohara giggled, "Whatever you say." She flicked her wrist and their sparklers lit up in a brilliant show of light. They cracked and popped in the air, and the heat they gave off was immense, almost too much to handle in the July heat. But that wasn't even the best part.

The best part, at least for Samekichi, was the smile on Wadanohara's face. Despite her reservations, she seemed to be enjoying herself quite a bit. He was happy he could help her have a little bit of happiness that night.

"I guess we got to see the fireworks tonight after all."

"I guess we did."

"It's kind of nice, just you and me."

Wadanohara hummed, focusing on her sparkler. Samekichi wanted to focus on the light show, but he became more and more distracted by Wadanohara in front of him. In the light cast by the sparkler she shone, almost like an angel. Not that Samekichi would say anything that cheesy around her, or anything...

"Oh. They went out." Wadanohara reached for yet another sparkler from the pack, but Samekichi grabbed her wrist.

"Wait," he said, before pressing a kiss to the side of her mouth. He felt the corners of her lips turn upwards before he pulled away. "I just wanted to do that."

Wadanohara dropped the sparkler in the bucket she had with them, and leaned back in for yet another kiss, her hands resting on his shoulders, since he was crouching. It started off innocently enough, just her lips brushing against his, but Samekichi was a greedy, greedy man. She sighed into their kiss, and tried to pull him in as close as physically possible. They were still getting used to the idea of deep kisses, even if their first kiss had been one, Samekichi hadn't dared kiss her like that again until recently.

Wadanohara pulled away from their kiss and said: "I'd really like to keep doing this, but we still have more sparklers to burn."

"Yeah, we do," Samekichi chuckled. He didn't let go of her though, and neither did she.
