Work Text:

No matter how much Heart tossed and turned, he couldn’t get to sleep. His bed was unusually, unpleasantly cold– even with the piles of pillows and blankets that surrounded him. It’s not as if he was a stranger to staying up all night (all of them struggle to sleep through the night, really. Mind is the only one who really puts the effort in to keep them all on a somewhat normal schedule. Sometimes it’s nice to know that he cares. Other times it means having to listen to him complain about Heart’s sleepless nights, even when Heart is actually trying to sleep) but this time he really did want to sleep, it just evaded him at every turn.

Well, if Mind was probably going to complain anyway, the least Heart could do was give him something to complain about. All throughout his struggle to fall asleep, a gentle haze had been pulling him in; now, at the thought of going to see Mind, it came back in full force.

(The haze was nice. It usually helped Heart fall asleep– it just wasn’t enough tonight.)

Heart didn’t make an effort to be quiet on his way to Mind’s room; Mind was going to be disturbed either way, and Soul probably wasn’t even asleep yet. That, and Heart was always more clumsy like this, and he was tired– even if he tried to be quiet, it most likely wouldn’t make a difference. Oh well. He soon found himself in front of Mind’s room, swinging the door open without hesitation.

“[Heart, what are you doing in here?]” Mind says, far too quickly. He couldn’t have even had time to look up before speaking; Heart supposed he is the only person in the house who would just barge into the room without even bothering to knock.

“(Tired,)” Heart says, simply. Words always felt more out of reach when he was small.

He begins to walk over to Mind’s bed, not quite taking care in checking his surroundings– he knows Mind’s room well enough that he should be fine–

Or so he thought. In a matter of seconds, Heart’s knees have collided with Mind’s bed, aching as he falls forward, face hitting the mattress with a dull thud. He isn’t hurt, not really, but he can’t help the low whine reverberating in his throat as his face scrunches up in despair.

“[Are you… alright?]” Mind asks, his uncertainty and concern evident in his tone of voice.

He is clearly not alright! He fell! He needs Mind to kiss him better right now, or he’ll start crying. Heart continues whining, the sound getting more desperate as time passes, and gives a few kicks of his feet for good measure.

“[Ah– you’re regressed, aren’t you?]” Mind asks again, but this time he doesn’t wait for a reply. “[Come here, you’re alright, everything’s fine.]” Mind carefully places his arms around Heart, pulling him up and into Mind’s lap.

As soon as Mind touches Heart, Heart practically goes limp as he sinks into him, forgetting all about his supposed injury in favour of tightly wrapping his arms around Mind’s waist as he tries to get as close to him as possible. Mind is cold, as always; it seeps into Heart from where he’s pressed himself against Mind. It’s nice– like a reminder Mind is here with him.

Mind steadily cards a hand through Heart’s hair as he leans back against the headboard; while also trying to subtly shift Heart to lay in his lap, rather than resting his head on Mind’s collarbone. Maybe he thinks Heart won’t notice if he moves slowly– he’s wrong, Heart absolutely notices; but he still allows Mind to gently manhandle him into curling up in his lap. It’s comfy, and the position lets him keep Mind pinned in place so he can give Heart all of the attention he needs. What’s not to love?

It doesn’t take long for Heart to fully settle in Mind’s lap, letting out content almost-purrs as Mind strokes his hair. He reaches his hands out, grasping onto Mind’s shirt and making biscuits in the fabric. Mind’s chest rumbles with a light laugh, the hand not in Heart’s hair coming forward to rest on Heart’s back.

Heart faintly registers Mind’s modulator clicking as he takes it off and sets it on his bedside table, before slumping down further in his bed. This only encourages him to lay on Mind, to keep him pinned down so they can sleep together. Heart barely makes it an inch up Mind’s body before Mind’s hands are on his shoulders, keeping him in place. He can feel Mind sigh before he fully gives in to laying in bed, pulling Heart up to rest on him before tugging the blanket over them both.

Excitedly wiggling, Heart makes himself comfy on Mind’s chest. He only stills once Mind’s hand once again begins weaving through his hair. Heart slumps into him, kneading at Mind’s sides even as the world grows hazy.
