Kabe no Naka

Summary:

The darkness; the void; the out-of-bounds. A place where life is not permitted.

Work Text:

On the distant horizon, you see it. An edge where the world extends endlessly before you.

A disturbing instinctual reaction warns you in bright flashing lights, stay away. The plain flat fields repeat on themselves in perpetuity. The mind struggles to perceive its scale. As far as the eye can see, there is suddenly nothing, as though an invisible threat had unhinged its proverbial maw and swallowed the earth. An empty, sinking pit in your stomach pulls you back with a stumble.

And yet, just below the shuddering nausea that crawls over your skin, a naive curiosity compels you forward. One could only imagine walking through such a boundless expanse, free and alone. You again inch closer; your scuffed sneaker nudges the barrier between the life behind you and the unknown. Silence rings in your ears like an alarm.

It seems so inviting from the other side. Its open arms beckon to you. Selfish human desire tells you in whispers, there must be something waiting for you at the other end of the expanse. Something secret and beautiful; something no one else can see.

You step over the edge, and with a gentle flicker, you are made part of the darkness.

Notes:

From Bulbapedia:

"The void (Japanese: 壁の中 inside the walls) is the black area that surrounds indoor areas in the Pokémon games.

All areas, indoors and outdoors, are surrounded by a tiled image, or in the case of Generation IV, an empty area. For most routes and cities, this tiled area is made of trees or water, or even rocky cliffs; however, as indoor areas tend to take up a small part of the screen, they must be filled with a blank tile to complete the illusion of being just a small part of a continuous world.

From Generations I to III, the void is completely inaccessible, and attempting to walk into it using a walk-through-walls code only results in the game crashing."
