Work Text:

Street lights.

Blurs of light passing through small windows were the only source of light that June had. Her surroundings were almost completely blacked out, no shapes recognizable. Something was around her wrists… rope. One of the harder restraints to break.

Her head weighed a thousand tons on top of her neck, and it took all of her strength not to pass out, or let her head loll to the side. June’s entire body ached, especially her stomach. The smell of wherever she was did not help, a mixture of gasoline and cigars.

The metal behind her made her back cold, a seemingly very thin piece of fabric being the only thing in between them. The feel of the clothing, the smell of her surroundings, all reminded her of the childhood she’d much rather forget.

Something shook the entire room, and the blurs outside the windows stopped. Only then did it occur to June; she was in a van.

The front doors slammed shut, shaking the back of the van once more. The metal behind her was suddenly gone, replaced with the leather of a jacket. Bulky arms wrapped around her chest, two others around her legs. Her arms were free to flail and fight, but June couldn’t bring herself to struggle. She let herself be carried, to be dropped onto the hard, concrete ground, and watched through drooping eyes as the carriers ran back to the van and drove away.

The urge to fall asleep was strong, but June couldn’t let herself. Not here. Not now. She needed to find a way home, maybe even to Quantico. For all she knew, the van could’ve dropped her off in Chicago. Virginia could be hundreds of miles away… she needed to find a payphone, maybe even borrow a stranger’s. She had to call the team, they would be able to help her.

Her legs still felt like lead, but she managed to stand up while balancing on the street sign. Glancing up to see where she was, June almost lost her balance from shock.

Levins Street.

JJ’s street.

“Black fence, grey siding-” All of the townhouses looked the exact same. Same grey siding, black fencing, white columns. But one house in particular stood out. One with a light blue baby swing set in the front yard.

Emily, Penelope, and June’s gift to baby Henry.

“Well, I know he’s a little young, but-”

“Oh no, Penelope what did you do?” JJ laughed, looking  between her three friends.

“I want to make it very clear I tried to stop her.”

“Oh please Emily, you're the one who picked out the color!”

“Alright, what did you girls get him?”

“It’s in my trunk!” Penelope turned around on the stoop, heading back down to her car.

“Your trunk? How big is it?” JJ followed her with Henry in her arms.

“Depends on your definition of big,” June smiled, her and Emily following the two.

JJ’s house.

Stumbling across the sidewalk, she managed to grasp hold of the fence, causing a loud crash.

“Guardian angels are near, so sleep on, with no fear.” JJ sang to her baby boy, as he finally went to sleep. “Guardian angels are near, so sleep on, with no fear.” She kissed him on his forehead, slowly placing him down in his crib. Lightly tiptoeing towards the door, she went to slowly shut it behind her.

*CRASH*

JJ jumped, accidentally shutting the door louder than she wanted. The slam woke Henry up, who started crying.

“JJ?” Will came hurrying up the stairs. “You okay?”

“Yeah, yeah I’m fine,” JJ called back, reopening the door and picking her son up.

“What was that?” He met her in the baby’s room, walking over to her.

“I don’t know-” She comforted Henry, trying to quiet him down. “I had just gotten him to sleep too.”

“He’s been having trouble falling asleep-” Will pulled back the curtain, looking down to see what the commotion was. “Come look at this,”

“What is it? It’s okay my baby-” She walked over next to him, looking out the window. Outside, someone was stumbling up the pathway, falling over their own feet. It was obvious whoever it was wasn’t stable, and was most likely beyond drunk.

But when the person's face caught the light from the streetlamp, JJ fell back from the window. Luckily, Will was there to catch her and Henry before she stumbled too far. “Okay I got you-”

“It’s June.”

“What?”

“Will, it’s June outside!” She steadied herself, before turning and handing the crying boy to him. “I need to go help her-”

“JJ, you need to take a breath, What if it’s not-” He adjusted Henry in his arms before grabbing JJ’s hand and stopping her from leaving.

“Listen, I know my friend’s face when I see her.” She had a set look of determination on her face, squeezing Will’s hand before pulling away. “Call Hotch!” As she ran out of the room, he continued to try to get Henry asleep while finding a phone. Jennifer, meanwhile, raced down the staircase. She made sure to grab her gun, in case whoever had dropped June off was still hanging around.

For the first three months after June's disappearance, she was their only active case. The one lead they managed to have was her controlling boyfriend, James. During their deep dive, the team quickly realized how much of an understatement ‘controlling’ was.

In her mind, June was hiding what was happening behind closed doors from her team. James acted like the perfect boyfriend whenever they were around them, and expertly avoided questions about her home life whenever it came up. However, when your closest friends are profilers, it starts to get difficult once they notice the classic signs.

The lovestruck girl always defended him, because in her mind it was different. Different than the hundreds of murdered abuse victims that pass her desk every day. Different than the stats Spencer gave everyone when they were on a domestic abuse case. James loved her unconditionally in her mind. He just had his way of showing it.

When it came to her disappearance, James was the first subject. But once they brought him in, he lawyered up and they never got a confession out of him. They searched June’s apartment, interviewed her family, and tried to find her biological parents but it seemed as if they either died or went off the grid. After 5 months of no June and no leads, her family decided to hold a funeral for her.

James didn’t even show up.

“Ju?” JJ opened the front door, and met face to face with June. She was so battered up, she was surprised she was able to tell it was her. Old bruises littered her face and arms, and her lip was cut recently. Dried blood coated her forehead and stuck to her hair, which had been cut to her shoulders. As JJ continued to scan her friend's feeble body, she noticed her stomach.

“Jay-Jen-” June couldn’t finish her sentence before she collapsed into JJ’s arms. The two went to the ground, the earlier fighting to stay awake.

“Will!” JJ called, trying to adjust the woman into a more comfortable position. “Will call the hospital, she’s pregnant!”

Will’s footsteps could be heard hurrying through the house, finally meeting the two women out front. Henry had stopped crying and was looking at his Mom with great interest. “She’s in bad shape Aaron… 5 months, maybe? Okay… I will.”  He hung up the phone. “Hotch says everyone’s gonna meet at the hospital, he’s calling your team now. He wants you to ride with her.”

JJ nodded, refocusing her attention on June. “Hey, can you hear me, June? Will’s calling the ambulance, okay? They’ll be here soon, you're gonna be alright.”

“Y-You’re working?” Was the first full sentence she managed to say.

“Yes, I’m working and I’m going to be on your case, so you need to try and tell me who did this to you.”

“Wh-Where’s the team?”

“They’re gonna meet us at the hospital, Ju I need you to try and focus on what I’m saying. I know it’s difficult, but is there anything you can tell me-”

“Julian,”

“Julian? Julian did-”

“No.” A look of fear formed in June’s eyes, and her breath started to quicken. “No, Julian’s still there. A-And so is Oliver and Luke- I- I need to go back. I need to go back right now.”

“You don’t need to go anywhere, Ju listening to me okay? Hey-” June struggled against JJ’s arms but was too tired to stand up with her legs. She grabbed at her friends shirt, transferring some of the dirt and blood onto her pajamas.

“I need to save them, they’re my brothers!”

“Brothers?” JJ glanced back at Will, who was still on the phone with the 9-1-1 operator. “June, you have one brother, his name is Tyler. Tyler Coleman.”

“No! No, I have more, I need to- I need to help-” June was crying, clutching JJ’s shirt in her hands. JJ rubbed circles on her back, trying to soothe her. Will stayed outside, rocking Henry to sleep while they waited for the ambulance to come.

The familiar sound of the sirens came quickly, and the red and white truck pulled up. “Okay, June? The ambulance is here, they're gonna check you and the baby out.”

“The baby?” A new look of shock passed over the woman’s tear-streaked face. “The baby, what baby?”

JJ didn’t answer for a second. “Just take some deep breaths for me, okay?” She looked up, calling for the ambulance.

June looked down at her stomach, seeing her pregnant belly. “How is this possible-”

“Deep breaths Ju, they’re going to lift you.”

“This isn’t possible, they didn’t have me for that long!” She exclaimed as the paramedics laid her onto the stretcher.

“How long did they have you? Who’s they?”

“Blood pressure is elevated, and heart rates high.”

“We need to get her to the hospital now, Ma’am are you her sister?” One of the paramedics turned towards JJ, who was standing on the outskirts of the ring of EMTs.

“Yes- I mean, I’m her coworker, she’s an FBI agent. Agent Jennifer Jeareu, I was told to ride to the hospital with her.”

“That’s fine Agent, what’s her name?”

“June Coleman.”

“How many months along is she?”

JJ sighed, stepping up into the ambulance behind the stretcher. “I don’t know. She’s been missing for 6 months, someone dropped her off in front of my- in front of my house.”

Before the doors of the ambulance shut, she turned back towards her family. She couldn’t believe it took her this long to figure it out. “Will, take Henry and follow us to the hospital. They know where we live!”
