Chapter 1: Tim Drake / A Bat Showing Its Wings

Chapter Text

It had been a long day of nothing.

Bruce had scheduled a charity gala for the day, completely freeing everyone from patrol for the day. But… After a small incident involving a certain rogue (The Joker) and a gala recently, despite being apprehended on the same day, they decided to cancel it.

Now, Bruce was watching an old telenovela while resting on the couch. Personally, he wanted to go and be Batman, but Alfred would not let him, saying he promised to stay home. Dick was in Blüdhaven, Jason was nowhere to be seen, Cass and Steph were doing “hot girl stuff” (Stephanie refused to elaborare), and Duke and Damian were outside playing with Titus. That left Tim with Bruce inside, Tim having gone to the manor in order to partake in the gala, but had not left just yet.

He was sitting on a plush armchair a little far from Bruce… He looked… Anxious. His legs were shaking slightly, the rest of his body twitching every so often. Sometimes, he would open his mouth to say something, but nothing would come out of it and he would close it again. Bruce was unsure if he should ask Tim how he's going, with his communication skills being imperfect.

But, he gave it a shot.

“... Tim. Are yo-” He got cut.

“Bruce, i need to tell you something.”

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck oh god oh my fucking god on the name of our lord Cassandra Cain

They were struggling so hard to speak, anything they tried to get off their throat felt stuck like a fly glued to a spider web, their eyes were a little heavy, even if they didn't feel like crying. They HAD to get this over with IMMEDIATLY.

“Bruce. I-... I… I'm trans.” They muttered quietly, almost holding it back like they were ashamed. “And i would prefer it if you called me Jane. Jane Drake. With she/her pronouns.” That last part was muttered even faster… God, she was scared…

“... Hmf...” Bruce grunted. *Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck oh my god oh no*

That was… Unexpected. Bruce and his ever growing paranoia had many ideas of what… *Jane* would say. Had she killed someone? Become a rogue? Want to quit vigilantism? Did her weird friends finally rope her into a polycule she could never escape from?

But no. It was just that. Just a simple affirmation. Oh, Bruce was feeling much better… Wait. Why is Jane even more anxious? Oh wait, he didn't say anything yet.

“Alright.” Bruce affirmed calmly, he extended his hand to his protége, who stood up from the armchair and sat beside him, giving him her hand. “... So, who knows yet?”

“... Kon, Cassie and Bart first. They were great about it. Then i told Bernard, who made a joke about us now being *straight*. I might've also told Helena and Stephanie when i was having a little breakdown-” He laughed It off, completely treating a *mental breakdown* as *something little*. She really was a bat.

“... I'll be sure to tell everyone else then, if you prefer… If you don't mind me asking, why did you go for *Jane*?” Bruce asked in a tone that wouldn't be misinterpreted as interrogation.

Oh my… Jane wasn't in danger now! Hooray! She just needed to answer some stuff-

“... I don't know, i just thought it fit, and… I guess if i think about it, it does remind me of my mother.” God, she missed her. She wonders how Janet would think about her, abound *Jane*... Her dad would probably be fine, she had seen him communicating peacefully about trans people, but she couldn't be sure about her mother… But, knowing thst ferocious woman, she would be okay with it.

“... You know, *Jane*, i'm glad you were comfortable enough to talk about it with me.” Bruce wanted to say more. He had a little speech planned, about him being proud of her no matter what, and that he sees her as family, but… He doesn't have the talent to say it out loud… So He just grunts and lets approach him more, laying her head on his shoulder and holding back sobs.

It was approximately two in the morning. On a rooftop, there were two ladies, wrapping a pair of unconscious low rank rogues around a fire escape for the GCPD to find. Huntress was finishing the job of clean up while Red Robin would look around the alley to see if there were sny more criminals.

“... Sheesh, Huntress. This night is a little lame, isn't it?” Red Robin looked at her, Helena gave her a smirk while approaching her, both of them seating on the edge of the rooftop.

“Yup. Honestly, i'm glad. Last night i went to a children's hospital for a little mission and stayed up late. I'm glad we have this Little rest.” Huntress gave her sister a smile, messing with her hair.

“Hey! It took a while to get it done!” Red Robin can't help but chuckle, melting in her touch.

“... Girl, your hair is so long! How long have you been growing it out again? A month? It looks fantastic!” Huntress gave another warm smile, still not finding any crime going on around Gotham.

“... Thanks, i'm glad you like it. I had Cassie and Bart help me with it, but i didn't realize before how it was… You know… Huntress…” Jane looked at her sister with many thoughts, many thoughts Helena wouldn't fully comprehend.

“... What is it, Red Robin?” Huntress asked.

“... Thank you. Thank you so much for… Being here. I don't know how to say this, but… You’re so important to me, and i…” Jane got interrupted by a hug from Helena. The two girls were now hugging on the dark rooftop at Gotham’s night.

Jane Drake is so glad she was lucky enough to be loved.
