Work Text:

February 2nd, hate

“I fucking hate you Remus lupin!” He was furious, Remus could tell, they’d been yelling for the solid part of an hour, oh but they were just getting into their stride now. He understood this, he was good at this. Sirius’ cheeks were flushed, his hair was wild and his eyes even more so, he was leaning forward, one foot back, one slightly bent in front of him, like he was about to start a race. His hands were balled into fists. Hoping vaguely that tonight wouldn't end with him nursing a black eye, Remus aimed low.

“Well I hate you too, you're stuck up, and posh, and your hair doesn’t even look that good!”

Sirius gasped, strode for the door in a fit of rage, shook the handle for a while, screeched in fury and shoved his shoulder against the wood with a mighty thud, it wobbled slightly.

A few years ago Dumbledore had made it so that doors could be opened both ways. Instead of helping with the time it took to open them, this just made it so that if two people were trying to get in, they would just push or pull against each other until someone gave out or lost the sales up version of arm wrestling and got slammed against the wall.

Sirius was shouldering the door hard, too angry to think of this. Remus had his hands on his hips, watching smugly.

“Who ever you are just open the fucking door.”

His voice changed. It was that strange accent it got, half French, half something ancient that it only acquired when he was really mad. His most ancient and noble house of black, ‘you must obey me’ voice.

The door slammed open, pressing James against the stone wall behind it like a flower between the pages of a book. The noise of its opening was too loud though, and echoed strangely. The bathroom door slammed open too, Pete was standing in a ratty pair of plaid pajama pants, brushing his teeth, he spat into the running sink and glared out at them.

Sirius stormed out, barely caring that James was hurt, which was a first.

Remus couldn’t even remember what they were arguing about but it had started days ago and had been growing. By the time Remus had started ignoring Sirius this morning, he was apparently too angry to think.

Angry enough to open what seemed like every door in the castle in a fit of rage.

Remus ran after him, sparing a moment to check James’ vitals before he was off again. As he was running down the stairs he heard Pete grouse:

“Will I ever get one day of peace with you three as my dorm mates?”

And James’ groaned

“Nah, sorry mate.”

Remus just kept running, a glimpse of Sirius’ curling black hair disappearing behind the portrait hole. Remus caught the gilded frame in one hand before it slammed shut in his face. Sirius didn't even slow as Remus called after him, stopping for a second to catch his breath, his hip twinging, hands on knees.

Sirius was running to the lakes edge, he knew this, so he loped slowly after him, knowing he would be able to locate him easily.

The sun was setting over the lake in the most beautiful way, gold and red an orange blurring together like watercolour, rays of light shining from behind the billowing curtain of clouds, ever moving, ever blooming. The other side of the sky was dark and thunderous, and a smear of blue coated the horizon all the way around.

Sirius was pacing up and down the grass, boots stomping over the already beaten down path. He was running his hands dramatically through his hair, fluffing it u, looking quite furious, Remus tried very hard not to laugh. He valued his organs.

“You drive me crazy, you know, absolutely mental Remus. It’s catastrophic really. Catastrophic. Why have you got to be so horrible all the time?” He whipped around, advancing rather menacingly. The russet sunset painted half of his face in gold, his eyes gleaming in two different types of metallic, one on either side, like the sun and the moon, the two objects of his love. His hair was frantically mussed around his face, his pupils dilated, he was breathing heavily, his hands were clutching at the already crumpled fabric of his top, Remus didn't feel like laughing anymore, he was trying very hard not to do something completely different but equally stupid. He still valued his organs, even if he couldn’t exactly find them at this moment in time.

“You! You're so… annoying and horrible and- and…”

He looked like an angel. Like Loki or Eros or Dionysius. Some kind of wicked, lovely thing, so much greater than Remus was.

“Beautiful.” Remus whispered, the awe was clear in his voice, he tried valiantly to regret it. There it was, just as stupid as it had been in his head. Since he was already going to be hung, drawn and quartered, he tucked a lightly twisting strand of hair behind Sirius’ delicately pointed ears. In his head, Remus privately thought Sirius must be an elf, one of the fae folk, here to steal his souls and his sanity with that cheeky impish smile and twinkling quicksilver eyes, the dimple in his left cheek and the freckle an inch or so under his right ear which Remus tried desperately not to kiss every time he saw it. There was no other explanation, the pointed curve of his ear was evidence, no human could be this…

“Just, absolutely gorgeous.”

His eyes had dilated even more, he looked a little like Remus’ reflection the day of the full moon, manic, animalistic. Feral.

Sirius kissed him.

It was the most romantic thing Remus had ever experienced, in the sunset, by the lake, with one hand on his hot cheek and the other in his hair. He tasted like anger and unspoken insults that would have to wait until their next spat. Since Remus was already going absolutely insane, he didn't even hesitate before responding to Sirius’:

“Oh,” he pressed a soft kiss to Remus’ bottom lip, “I still hate you, by the way.”

with:

“And I lied, your hair always looks good.”

Sirius pouted.

“Stop, you're making me feel bad for being sarcastic now.”

Remus just laughed, and kissed him, and laughed again. He couldn't care less if Sirius hated him, he’d found his organs again, and they weren’t on the floor, so in his opinion, he’d won. That and the fact that he had the most gorgeous boy in the fucking world in his arms. That was definitely a win.
