The train carriage was filled with chatter, people travelling together engaging in conversation to pass time. Of course, there were those who just sat in silence, either looking outside the window to appreciate the scenery or just lost in thought. Caleb was a combination of both. As he was looking outside of the window, the skyline of Linkon slowly disappeared in the distance, leaving behind memories of the near past. His eyes stared into the vast blue sky, locked on the clouds decorating the horizon. To others, the scenery of this train ride was mesmerizing, but to him it couldn’t compare to who stayed behind.
The pang in his chest was unbearable. He was about to embark on this new adventure to fulfil his childhood dream of becoming a pilot, but then why was his heart so heavy? Well, the answer to that is pretty simple, actually. Leaving Linkon meant leaving behind (Y/N) and with that, leaving behind his only solace in this cruel world. To him, leaving the girl behind meant leaving behind a piece of his very own being, a part of his heart and soul. From now on, the two of them wouldn’t be sharing dinner every single evening, bantering joyfully at the dinner table and simply enjoying each other’s presence or walking home from school after an exhausting day, grabbing a snack from the corner store. Of course, they weren’t children anymore, but in Caleb’s mind, not a lot of things have changed since Josephine took them under her wings, only one minor thing: as they got older and older, the childhood love bloomed into something more mature as time passed. To him, (Y/N) was not only his childhood best friend who would listen to him talk about airplanes all the time, but she was also the only person whose closeness brought peace to his troubled soul. The playful teasing between the two of them transformed into a way for Caleb to make her laugh and happy. Now, he wouldn’t be able to see her as she rolled her pretty eyes after listening to yet another deadbeat joke of his. He can, and most certainly will visit home, but the dread of departure will always linger in the air, adding a bittersweet flavour to their time spent together.
Arriving in Skyhaven, Caleb let out a heavy sigh as he started to leave the platform to get into the station building. All of a sudden, a familiar silhouette showed up in the distance, slowly walking past the sea of people on the platform. Making his steps faster and faster, he was eager to catch up to the figure, thinking that by some heavenly miracle she was on the same train. His hope, however, was quickly shattered as the person turned to the side. Caleb stopped dead in his tracks as realization hit him like a boulder: it wasn’t her. Of course, it wasn’t her, how stupid of him to think that (Y/N) would secretly hop on the train to Skyhaven just moments after saying goodbye to him, with tears swelling in her eyes. Even if this was just a ridiculous fantasy of his, he still secretly hoped that his favourite girl would show up at the platform, arms open for a tight embrace to welcome him. The buzzing of his phone quickly snapped Caleb from his daydream, signalling that he’s just received a message. Getting his phone out of the pocket of his jacket, he couldn’t help but smile – seeing her nickname in the text notifications instantly brightened his mood.
Pipsqueak: Hi Caleb, you should have arrived by now! I hope your journey was smooth and everything is okay. Granny and I miss you so much already, I can’t wait ‘till you are back! <3
