A World Where You’re Still in It

Summary:

“Isn't it weird? How we all just, accept the mistreatment in our lives?” Turssh complained, her gaze facing upward and her hands splaying on the ground behind her.

“Yeah.” Kai monotonically said.

“Oh c’mon,” As if Turssh could hear his disinterest, turned towards Kai. “Can’t you see everything around us? Isn’t the world so cruel?”

“Yeah.” Kai replied, not even taking a move to look at Turssh back.

Turssh rolled her eyes, “You’re just the same as always.”

Or 5 times they encountered death and survived and another one where one of them did not.

Notes:

Basically, this is my first time writing an actual story and the first of (hopefully) many. I apologize if this is not to your liking but I had a sudden burst of inspiration and didn’t really want to lose it. Anywho, hope u enjoy the ride!

Chapter 1: Where It All Began

Chapter Text

There once were two children, born in a world where ruin was around. These two were just one of many that were born in this era filled with violence and hate. They are not special, but at the same time, they are. Because they are still filled with innocence that has not tainted their souls.

This story begins in a pasture, where the world has not rotten to its core. This is where Kai and Turssh sat on the grass, conversing with each other.

“Isn't it weird? How we all just, accept the mistreatment in our lives?” Turssh complained, her gaze facing upwards and her hands splaying on the ground behind her.

“Yeah.” Kai monotonically said.

“Oh c’mon,” As if Turssh could hear his disinterest, she turned towards Kai. “Can’t you see everything around us? Isn’t the world so cruel?”

“Yeah.” Kai replied, not even taking a move to look at Turssh back.

Turssh rolled her eyes, “You’re just the same as always.”

“Just because you don’t want to do chores doesn’t mean that this world is cruel.” Kai watched as a cloud passed by, “And besides, I rather like our lives right now.”

“Oh, c’monnn,” Turssh whined as she removed her arms behind her and started flailing it around like a toddler. “Wouldn’t it be exciting if we actually get to see the outside world? We can maybe even see the ocean!”

“Yeah, yeah,” Kai absently remarked, still focused on the sky now forming bigger clouds.

In the distance, the mothers of Kai and Turssh could be heard, telling them to come back for dinner. Unknowingly, a knot starts to form in his gut, he decides to leave that issue for now and starts his journey back towards their home.

………………………………………………………………….

“That’s weird,” the mutterings of one of their moms, Kyra, could be heard.

“Hm, what is it honey?” The other named Traus says.

“Those clouds have been there for days, and it hasn’t even let up even once.”

“Huh, I’m sure it’s nothing.” Traus gently comforted Kyra, embracing her. “You’ve always been a worrywart.”

………………………………………………………………….

“Kai! Kai! Can we go outsideee?” Turssh clasped both her hands in front of Kai. “I really want to!”

Kai glanced towards their mothers, a tint of questioning in his eyes. Kyra’s eyes flickered with concern, immediately looking towards her partner.

“Yeah, you two can go,” Traus put her hand on Kyra’s shoulder in a form of comfort.

With permission given, Kai sighs and accepts his faith as he lets his little sister pull him outside.

As they went out the front door, the first thing that Kai saw was the usually green surroundings engulfed with slight grays. The sky seemingly a similar shade to that of ashes. Kai starts to feel this sort of tugging within the depths of his stomach. But before he could really give it any attention, Turssh bolted toward their usual place, the luscious and expansive pasture.

“C’mon, c’mon!” Turssh turned around, seemingly running backward. Kai has no idea how she hasn’t tripped yet but he’s not even gonna question it.

"Yeah, yea.”

And Kai follows, after all, what would he be without his sister, his family.

………………………………………………………………….

Kai approaches their spot, the spot they claimed years ago, with Turssh already sitting criss-cross applesauce seemingly petting a little rabbit. He proceeded to lay down next to her, his hands behind his head.

Kai sighed, trying to get rid of this tension building up inside him. After all, there is no danger, they are safe, his family is safe. Hearing this sigh, Turssh turned her eyes to look at Kai’s scrunched up face.

“You alright?” Kai glanced towards Turssh, making her look away. She wasn’t the type to question, in Kai’s eyes, she was just this little sister that was a little full of herself, a little energetic, scratch that, a lot energetic. And dense. Seeing as she noticed his discomfort, it seems that he is letting his anxiety get the best of him.

“...sigh. It’s nothing really, just a funny feeling,” Kai described. Turssh doesn’t seem to buy it. Before she can give a sassy comment though, a noise cut her train of thought.

Distant horns start to bellow this low and menacing tone. Looking towards the sound, they saw something that they could not even imagine seeing.

Faint light could be seen with them. They held torches on one hand and shields on the other, with their swords in straps to their sides. Soldiers. Soldiers have come.

“Look! Look brother! Soldi-” Before Turssh could even finish her sentence, the soldiers started spreading their hands, the one with the torches, downward.

Turssh’s face that was, a moment ago, filled with excitement, turned to one that looked like their dead dog was just killed in front of them. Then again, it wouldn’t be that far off, she did live there, and considered even the animals as her family. Kai never really understood her but all he needed to do was love her, which was easy, because she was so easy to love.

As they stood there, frozen for what seems like eternity, letting the fire move frantically through the grass, they finally came out of their senses when they heard screams of agony.

This time, both of their stomachs dropped to the floor. Those screams were in the direction of their house.
