Chapter Text
Jamie sat at his desk, his fingers hovering over the keyboard, but his mind was a thousand miles away. He stared at the glowing screen of his laptop, the blinking cursor mocking him for his inability to focus. The walls of the office around him felt like they were closing in, and the quiet hum of the air conditioning did little to quell the storm brewing in his chest.
It had been a long week, but the source of his unease wasn’t a difficult scoop or a deadline that loomed too large. No, it was Peter, his boss, his mentor, his father figure, who was no longer going to be Jamie’s boss.
Peter had been like a second father to Jamie ever since he’d joined the firm as a fresh-faced intern. The older man had taught him the ropes of investigative journalism, offering advice, guidance, and the occasional tough love when needed. But Peter’s place in the company was changing. A new manager, Mason, was coming in to take over Jamie’s department.
The thought of not reporting to Peter anymore left Jamie with a gnawing worry. How could he possibly navigate this new phase without Peter’s steady hand at the helm? He knew the firm was growing, that change was inevitable, but it felt wrong. Peter had always been more than just a boss—he was the kind of mentor Jamie could go to for anything.
“Jamie,” Peter’s voice called out from the doorframe of his office, pulling him from his thoughts.
Jamie looked up and tried to smile, but it faltered. Peter was standing there, looking as calm as always. Despite the changes that were shaking Jamie to his core, Peter looked steady—like the rock he had always been.
“Hey, Peter,” Jamie said, his voice softer than usual.
Peter walked in, closing the door behind him. “You look like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, kid.”
“I guess I am,” Jamie replied, leaning back in his chair and rubbing his temples. “Mason… the new manager. I can’t imagine how things are going to work with him. You’ve always been there for me. How am I supposed to… What if it doesn’t work out?”
Peter took a seat across from Jamie, his gaze softening with understanding. “I get it. I really do. I’ve been where you are, feeling like the world’s shifting beneath your feet.” He sighed, but his tone remained reassuring. “But you’ve got to trust me on this. Mason’s a good guy. I’ve known him for years. He’s sharp, honest, and he’ll be good for you.”
“But—”
“No buts, Jamie.” Peter’s voice was firm, but there was a glimmer of something paternal in it. “I’m not going anywhere. I’ll still be around, just in a different role. It’s not like I’m disappearing. You know I’ve got your back, no matter what.” He paused, allowing the weight of his words to settle. “Mason’s coming in with fresh ideas, a new perspective. He’ll bring something to the team that I can’t. It’s time for that.”
Jamie didn’t respond right away. He stared at Peter, trying to understand the depth of what he was saying. He trusted Peter completely—had always trusted him—but the thought of losing that daily connection was still hard to swallow.
“Do you trust me?” Peter asked, leaning forward, his eyes locking with Jamie’s.
Jamie’s heart gave a small lurch, but he nodded. “Of course, I do.”
“Then trust me on this, too.” Peter’s voice softened. “I wouldn’t hand this over to anyone I didn’t believe in. You’re going to be just fine with Mason. And I’ll be there to guide you, as always.”
Jamie sighed, feeling the weight in his chest start to lift. Peter’s words always had a way of settling the storm inside him. “I guess I’m just afraid of things changing.”
Peter smiled, a rare, warm grin that made Jamie feel like everything was going to be okay. “Change can be hard, I won’t lie. But it’s also a chance for growth. You’ve been killing it with your scoops, Jamie. Mason’s going to recognize that, and he’ll know how to help you take it to the next level. I have no doubt in my mind that you’ll be an asset to him, just like you’ve been to me.”
Jamie took a deep breath, the tightness in his chest easing as he looked at Peter. The man wasn’t just a boss—he was a guide, a mentor, a second father. And even if their daily working relationship was changing, he knew that wouldn’t change the bond they shared.
“Thanks, Peter. I needed to hear that.”
Peter stood up, giving Jamie a hearty clap on the shoulder. “Anytime, kid. Now, get back to your work. I’ve got a feeling Mason’s going to want to hit the ground running, and we don’t want him to think we’re slacking off.”
Jamie chuckled, the tension in his body finally easing as he watched Peter leave. He wasn’t sure what the future with Mason would bring, but with Peter’s trust and reassurance, he was ready to face whatever came his way.
After all, Peter had never steered him wrong.
