Work Text:
It was a day like any other in the 3rd year dorms of UA, except for once, it was rather quiet. Sure, most people were studying, or busy training, or out doing their work-studies, but not Mirio.
He still had yet to recover from his lack of Quirk brought on upon him unfaithfully from the Shie Hassaikai raid he did in his work-study.
He places a palm against the glass, and pushes. Nothing happens. It aches.
Mirio was notorious for being the happy-go-lucky, ever smiling ideal hero, always cracking jokes, always laughing. But.. he’s not a hero. Not yet. He was just a kid, really. He still had to graduate, and climb the charts, and join an agency..
He sucked in a sharp breath, and blinked away a tear. He didn’t like thinking about it right now, especially with how unsure his future seemed to be, even though his mentor - on his deathbed - reassured Mirio the best he could. His future was bright.
At least, he hoped it would be.
Mirio sighed, and sat down on the edge of his bed, and placed his face in his hands. He had to be strong, he had to be. He was Lemillion, he was going to be a great hero. Maybe not the greatest, but that was okay. He wanted to become a hero to help others in any and every way he could, not for fame. And now, without a Quirk, or a mentor, or.. Realistically anyone right now, he was hopeless.
He was snapped out of his self-deprecating spiral of thoughts, as someone knocked at his door. He sighed, and ran a hand back over his face and through his hair, putting on his signature smile, and he got up.
He wearily walked over to the door with a bright smile on his face, but it fell slightly.
“Hado?” He asked, somewhat shocked to see his classmate.
She said nothing, and instead pushed past him, walking into his dorm and sitting on his bed.
Confused, Mirio shut his door behind him, and sat on his bed next to her, whilst keeping a fair amount of distance between them before speaking.
“..You’re freaking me out a little bit here, you know..!” He chuckled weakly, nudging her with his elbow lightly.
Nejire glanced up at him, and sighed shakily, before speaking.
“..Are you okay?”
He paused. “Uh- Wh- Yeah! Of course I’m okay!” He waved a hand flippantly, chuckling more shakier this time as he felt a bead of sweat uncomfortably roll down his neck.
“..Togata..
Please
..”
“..Sorry.”
The two sat in silence for a few minutes, before Nejire spoke up again.
“I miss seeing you in class.”
She.. missed him? This came as a somewhat of a surprise to Mirio, and he raised an eyebrow at her.
“You miss me?”
She hummed softly, and nodded, tucking a few strands of periwinkle hair out of her face, before looking directly at him, a wry smile on her lips, which seemed to lighten up the rest of her face. The one that Mirio was always particularly fond of in secret.
“..Awwwww, well, I’ll be better before you know it, Hado!” He smiled in return, and patted her head comfortingly.
Nejire leaned into his hand, soaking the warmth directly out of his palm, before speaking again. “..Yeah, true, but that doesn’t mean I can’t miss you now, does it?”
“I guess so!” He sighed softly, and gazed at her fondly.
Mirio somewhat reluctantly peeled his hand away from her hair, not wanting to keep it there for too long lest it become weird or too awkward, and in return, Nejire lightly poked his cheek.
“I like seeing you smile, Togata-San.” She said, softly, the rest of her hand moving to carefully rest against his cheek, her thumb rubbing gentle, comforting circles into his skin.
Mirio would’ve sworn he would melt if he could, and in return, he felt the heat in his cheeks rise softly.
“..You.. you do..?” He asked, a hint of disbelief in his voice, to which Nejire nodded in return.
“..It suits you. Like, in general, I mean! You have a very smiley facial structure! But that doesn’t mean you
have
to smile!”
He shrugged, and placed a hand over hers, gently pulling her hand away from his face, and instead intertwining their fingers. “..That’s.. True, however! Have you considered you make me smile, Hado?”
Nejire paused, now it being her turn for her cheeks to rapidly flush, and she stammered over her words before managing to come up with a decently coherent answer.
“..You..y-you.. Guh!! You’re too sweet for words, you know..” She pouted, yet there was no malice or hurt behind it.
Mirio squeezed her hand comfortingly, and impulsively brought it up to his mouth, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles. “..Am I really?” He asked, somewhat teasingly.
Nejire squeaked in fluster, her face going bright pink, and she fumbled for her words to no success, before sighing, and pulling him into a hug, nuzzling her face into the crook of the blonde’s neck in a futile attempt to quell how hot her face had become.
“..Wo-ah..” He gasped, his face heating up in return, and he moved a hand to gently wrap around her waist, and pull her closer, relishing in the contact.
The pair sat in silence for what felt like an eternity, the soft distant chirping of songbirds from outside Mirio’s bedroom window and the sound of their gentle breaths intermingling and shifting to match the other’s pace being the only soft sounds in the room.
Until Nejire spoke up, clearing her throat and speaking with trepidation. “..Mirio?” She asked, using his first name as a subtle indicator that whatever she may say next is important.
Mirio craned his neck back so he could look at her properly, humming in affirmation as a non-verbal prompt for her to continue as she pulled her head out of his neck, and continued.
“..I think I like you.”
“Oh? Well, I like me too,” Mirio began, his usual cheekiness slipping into his voice. “So I can see why you would too.”
Nejire, unamused, sighed. “..Not like that. I.. I think I love you, Mirio.”
Mirio’s breath caught in his throat, and he spluttered softly, staring down at her with widened eyes, being rendered momentarily speechless.
“..You love me?”
She nodded.
“..Me???” Mirio asked again, just to squash his insecurities.
“Yes!! You!!” Nejire exclaimed, bringing him closer again, and impulsively capturing his lips in a soft, tender kiss.
Mirio froze, but eventually responded, softly kissing her back for a moment, and pulling back.
“..N..Nejire..” He began, slightly breathless this time.
“..Please.. Uh.. be my..”
“..Of course.”
Nejire pouted, and pulled her arms away from him, folding them over her chest.
“You didn’t even let me finish!!”
“Sorry!! I’m sorry. You can say it.” He said, waving his hands in an apologetic manner.
She took a soft breath, gently preparing herself to actually ask him the question that had been weighing on her mind for months now.
“..Togata Mirio.. Do you want to be my boyfriend..?”
Mirio hesitated, even though he knew what he was going to say, he wanted to relish in the surreality of the moment, and he gazed at her lovingly, before gently placing his hands onto her shoulders, and leaning her closer to him, planting a gentle kiss onto her forehead, before speaking.
“..Of course I do.”
Nejire breathed out a sigh of relief, and allowed herself to flop back-first onto his mattress, and gazed up at the ceiling, with Mirio following suit, instead though, laying on his side and gazing at her.
“..I am.. So glad you said yes.”
“..Why wouldn’t I? You’re beautiful, Nejire.”
She sighed, and shifted her gaze over to him, biting her lip in worry, knowing he was already going through so much at the minute, and she would figure that someday soon she will bare all of herself out to him without fear or insecurity.
“..I just.. Worry.” She answered softly, after a quiet minute of mental debate.
Mirio hummed, and moved to tuck a strand of hair out of her face.
“..It’s okay. You don’t have to worry about that anymore, at least!” He chuckled.
She chuckled in return, and shifted her gaze back up to the ceiling again. “..I guess so, Mirio.”
Mirio lightly poked her side a few times, laughing softly. “Are you ready for a future full of smiles and laughter?!”
Nejire exploded into a bit of soft giggles and laughter, squirming against his hand, nodding rapidly. “Yes! Yes!! A thousand times, yes!! Just, stop tickling me..!” She whined, playfully.
He kept poking and tickling her for a minute more, before giving in, and wrapping an arm around her shoulders, bringing her into a hug.
“Hey, Nejire?”
“..Yeah, Mirio?”
“..I love you.”
She smiled. “I love you too.”
