Work Text:
Deku promised himself he would work hard this semester and get high grades in all of his classes but it was the first period of day one, and he was already failing. He blamed the presence that was sitting in the corner of the classroom.
It was the first day of semester two at UA high school and the air was full of excited chippers of students talking about their new classes and confused expressions from students running around trying to find their new classes.
Deku found his class fairly quickly, even faster than his teacher it seemed because the door was locked and there was no one around. He leaned against the wall next to the door and waited. Later a few people showed up who read the room number and stopped next to Deku. His new classmates apparently. There was only one classmate he was waiting for though.
He turned his head left and right looking through the crowd of students for a certain tall blond. There was a door leading outside to Deku’s left and every few seconds someone would open it causing a strong gust of wind to blow Deku’s hair in every direction. This didn’t help in his search.
At some point, Tenya Ida showed up. Deku had a faint memory of him saying they had first period together but his brain filtered out any useless information. The only name Deku remembered for his first period class was Bakugou. Ida started talking Deku’s ear off about his morning.
“-Because It’s always important to start the new semester off with a good breakfast!”
“Oh…yea, of course.” Deku responded distractedly. He was still focused on finding the blond.
A few minutes later their new teacher appeared. He looked dark and mad. A strange contrast compared to the bright faces of everyone else on the first day. “Welcome to your Hero studies course.” He said, his voice was very quiet with all of the noise in the background. He unlocked the door and students went inside quickly, escaping the cold wind. Deku took one last long for Bakugou then followed Ida into the class. There were still a few minutes until class started, maybe Bakugou was just late. On the first day?
Ida asked where Deku wanted to sit and since they were one of the first ones there, they had a lot of options. He didn’t want to sit in the front because the teacher would be watching him like a hawk and he didn’t want to be in the middle because then he would have to walk through a watchful, silent crowd of people if he ever showed up late.
They ended up sitting in the back of the class in the corner near the window. Deku had an “ok” view of the whiteboard and a clear view of the door, in case someone decided to show up.
He only noticed the seating arrangement when he sat down. All of the desks were put in groups of three. Deku took the seat at the far right and Ida sat in the middle which left one last seat to the left for Bakugou.
The clock was ticking and Ida continued to talk about something that Deku didn’t care to pay attention to. He gave offhanded hums in agreement whenever there was a pause. When asked about his attitude, Deku said he just didn’t sleep properly because of first day chiters. The class started to fill up and the teacher started giving a simple introduction. Class hadn’t officially started yet so there was still time. Deku started wondering if he even read Bakugou’s schedule properly. Maybe he had the same course but in a different class, or maybe he got switched last minute.
He watched as someone entered the room. He recognized him. Sero. He had seen him around the school a bit but they had never really talked. He was one of the people Bakugou had introduced to Deku. Deku tried to become friends with him and start a conversation with him with every chance he got, for Bakugou’s sake but right now was not the time for him to be making his way towards Deku and Ida. He didn’t even notice Deku, instead greeted Ida and sat down in the seat next to him without asking. He sat in Bakugou’s seat without asking.
Well, his unofficial seat.
Deku tried problem solving in every way that didn’t include telling Sero to get his ass out of here. There was one empty seat in front of the trio of desks in front of him but two of the desks were taken by people that Bakugou fought with so he doubted he would sit there. There was also one seat in the trio of desks to the left of where Sero was sitting. The only thing in between that desk and Sero was a small gap for the teacher to get across. Only downside, the other two desks were filled with these girls talking about their makeup. Deku figured Bakugou wasn’t going to sit there either.
A few seconds after Sero stole his seat, Bakugou decided to show up. Deku caught his eye from across the room and Bakugou gave a small nod in greeting. Deku waved and caught Bakugou scanning around the room for a seat and Deku’s anger for Sero returned in an instant. Bakugou ended up sitting on a desk near the door, a desk that was on the complete opposite side of the room.
He showed up exactly when the bell rang and the teacher started giving her a real introduction. Deku kept stealing glances at the back of Bakugou’s head. Well, at least now he could admire his beauty, something he wouldn’t be able to do if he was sat right next to him. Still, this semester would be a lot better if he sat right next to Bakugou. The teacher said he didn’t care where everyone sat and there was no seating plan so maybe he could tell Sero to move tomorrow, or go sit next to where Bakugou was. For now, he stared at Bakugou from afar.
(spoiler alert: Bakugou doesn’t show up the next day.)
