Work Text:
Ignotus sat on a boulder, watching the waves move back and forth in a calming motion, the summer breeze blowing through. He grasped the invisibility cloak tightly, smelling the lingering hints of decay.
It was a relief that he had chosen to get the invisibility cloak. His two brothers - Antioch and Cadmus - had both died shortly after they had received their gifts from death.
The man, now aged, headed back to his house and called his son out with slow and careful steps. His body was now frail and would continue to deteriorate, akin to a caged bird, becoming a prison of flesh of his own making, preventing his soul from moving on.
Soon, the two sat near the edge of a cliff. The sky was now filled with a brilliant array of hues, splashes of yellow and orange covering the big canvas.
It was a brilliant day to die.
Grasping his invisibility cloak for the last time, Ignotus covered it over to his son, deciding it was better off as an heirloom.
“Go now, my son, and do not search for me. My time here is soon up.”
Naturally, Ignotus’ son looked at him sadly, afraid of letting go. Without a word, he went back in the house, leaving Ignotus to continue sitting at the edge of the cliff.
Quickly, Death arrived, his aura radiating of decay. Ignotus immediately turned to look towards him and stood upright, awaiting for his release from this mortal realm. Death held onto Ignotus akin to a lover, embracing him.
“Ignotus… my love, my soul, my equal. Come, let us be in the afterlife together and forevermore,” rasped Death, wrapping Ignotus in the being’s long sleeves, concealing him from prying eyes.
Ignotus looked at death with a small smile full of longing - yes take me there - and soon the last bit of life fell from his eyes, body falling limp and becoming a corpse, never to be seen again, for Death treasures every part of Ignotus dearly.
Now, finally at rest, Ignotus finds himself in the afterlife together with Death.
He is finally home.
