"Mom, dad, Petunia, Vernon, I'd like you to meet my boyfriends, James and Regulus." James smiled, shaking her parents' hand before offering a handshake to Petunia and Vernon. Petunia politely shook his hand before discreetly wiping her hand on her napkin. Vernon refused to even shake his hand.
Regulus did the same, offering a "Nice to meet you ma'am, sir," as he did. He took note of Petunia's reaction but held his tongue. It is not his place to comment on it, nor is he looking to start a fight this evening.
Having introduced James and Regulus, the trio sat down at the table. James, ever the gentleman, held her seat for her before reaching to do the same for Regulus. Regulus rolled his eyes with a small smile, "I got it, James, but thanks."
"Is that the James you've talked about so much in your letters?" Her mom inquired. Her eyes strayed to their matching strands of hair. Lily blushed, "Yes, he's that James."
"And you said I was nothing to write home about, huh." James teased lightly. Lily grinned, "Oh only bad things, don't worry." She teased back. Regulus snorted, "That mustn't have been too hard." James reached around the back of Lily's chair to give him a light shove in the shoulder, "Oi, I'm not that bad!"
"Of course, no normal people could have hair that unruly," Petunia muttered under her breath, loud enough for everyone to hear.
James politely ignores her. Lily, however, immediately shot back with, "Oh I'm sorry, did you say something, Tuney?"
"Only that his manners are apparently as good as his hair is neat." Petunia said venomously. Vernon looked like he wanted to agree but he was smart enough not to get between the two of them.
James raised an eyebrow but chuckled good naturedly, "I guess my hair must look a lot neater than usual then."
Their mom and dad chuckled, though Mrs Evans quickly scolded Petunia when she opened her mouth for another scathing remark. "Petunia, be nice. James is our guest, and this is the first time we are meeting him. We were also nice to Vernon when we first met him. I know it's been a while since we last saw Lily but she's still your sister. Now, you must be Regulus, correct?"
Petunia glared at her Lily & James but kept her mouth shut.
Dinner was served and they were quick to engage James and Regulus in conversation. Petunia & Vernon remained mostly quiet.
Finally, towards the end of the meal, Petunia could not keep her mouth shut any longer.
"I'm glad you found a boyfriend, Lily," James smiled softly, "so you wouldn't have to fear dying alone like I though you would." He frowned. That's an odd way to put it.
"At least you found another freak, so you will not taint one of us normal people, sister." Petunia spat. "Though of course you couldn't even do that normally. Two boyfriends, you look like a whore. I refuse to have a sister that is like that." James' expression went from puzzled to steely.
He shared a look with Lily & Regulus and stood up, "Thank you for the invitation, Mr and Mrs Evans, it was nice to meet you, and the meal was delicious. However, I think it's time to go. I hope we can see each other again soon. C'mon Lils, Reg, let's go." With that, he stood up, Lily and Regulus being quick to follow. "It was good to see you again, mom, dad but I think it's better we go." Lily said before turning to leave.
The second Lily turned her back, Petunia lunged. James quickly spun around, pushing Lily behind him, and blocked Petunia's body with his forearm, wand in his other hand with a spell lighting up the tip. Regulus was right beside him, covering the opening James had left on his right side, wand aimed at Vernon. The man had taken a few steps towards them, likely to back up his girlfriend or try to intimidate them.
James looked thunderous and his lips are peeled back in a snarl that has Moony written all over it. "Out of respect for Lily and your parents, I will not retaliate, especially not under their roof. However, if you try this again, I will not hesitate to hex you. You see, I am from an old, pureblood family and because of our wealth, we get quite a lot of leeway. I am not afraid to abuse that privilege to protect Lily."
Regulus sneered, "Given the fact that your sister isn't the one that tried to attack anyone, I'd say she is a more normal and well behaving member of society than you are. I'd suggest learning to set your prejudices' aside, as they wouldn't get you very far in the world, if it wasn't already clear that you have made up your mind."
James finally let the spell dissipate and pushed her off. He turned around, ignoring her yelling. As he was moving to the door, he heard a loud slap ring out behind him. Lily had slapped Petunia right across the face. She was glaring at her sister and hissed, "Do your worst, wench."
