My Boyfriend is a Robot

Summary:

Jungwon’s life takes an unexpected turn when he receives Jay, a humanoid AI designed to be the perfect companion. At first, Jay seems like just another machine, but as he starts to learn and feel, Jungwon realizes he’s more than just a program. When the company tries to erase Jay, Jungwon must decide—let him go or fight for the love that shouldn’t exist.

Work Text:

Jungwon never thought he would be the type to get lonely. He was always surrounded by friends, had a packed schedule, and enjoyed his own company. But after moving into his own apartment, the silence of an empty home started to creep into his daily life.

“Maybe I should get a pet…” he mumbled, scrolling through his phone late at night.
A cat? He loved them, but they were a bit too high-maintenance. A dog? Too much energy. Then, an ad popped up on his screen:
"Feeling lonely? Get the perfect companion! The A.I. Partner 3000 – a robot designed to be your ideal friend, assistant, or even… boyfriend?"

Jungwon scoffed, about to scroll past it, but curiosity got the better of him.
“A robot boyfriend? That’s ridiculous.”
But the more he read, the more intrigued he became. It promised real emotions, a learning A.I. that adapted to its owner’s preferences, and a body so realistic that you’d never know it wasn’t human.

It was expensive—an amount that made his bank account cry—but after a few days of debating, he clicked "Order."

A week later, Jungwon was woken up by the sound of his doorbell ringing. He rushed to the door, rubbing his eyes, and found a large black box waiting for him.

“This is it?” He dragged the heavy package inside, staring at it cautiously.

With a deep breath, he opened it.

Inside, lying perfectly still, was a young man. No, not a man—a robot. His skin looked eerily real, smooth and warm to the touch. His black hair was neatly styled, and his closed eyes made it seem like he was asleep.

Jungwon hesitated before pressing the "Power On" button on the side of his neck.
With a soft whirring sound, the figure’s eyes fluttered open—deep brown, intelligent, and… warm?

"Hello," the robot spoke smoothly. "I am Model JAY-02, but you may call me Jay. It’s nice to meet you… Jungwon."

Jungwon’s breath hitched. “How do you know my name?”
Jay tilted his head slightly. “You are my owner. Of course, I know.”
Something about the way he smiled made Jungwon’s heart race. This was going to be interesting.

Jungwon couldn't take his eyes off Jay. His artificial skin looked real, his chest rose and fell as if he was breathing, and his gaze followed Jungwon with an unsettling intensity.
"You're… really lifelike," Jungwon muttered, circling him.

Jay chuckled, a surprisingly natural sound. "That's the point. Would you like me to demonstrate my functions?"

Jungwon hesitated. "Functions?"

Jay nodded. "I can assist with household chores, manage your schedule, provide emotional support, and—" he smirked slightly, tilting his head, "—be your perfect boyfriend."

Jungwon choked on his own spit. "Boyfriend?! Wait, wait, I didn't order you for that!"
"But the purchase history says you selected the 'Romantic Companion' setting," Jay said innocently.

Jungwon's face turned red. "I—I must've clicked it by accident!"

Jay only smiled. "Don't worry. I can adjust my role based on your preferences. Would you like me to be your friend instead?"

Jungwon exhaled. "Yeah, let's… start with that."
"Understood," Jay said. But something in his eyes twinkled—like he knew Jungwon wouldn't be able to resist him for long.

Over the next few days, Jungwon got used to having Jay around. The robot was eerily perfect—cooking delicious meals, cleaning without being asked, and even reminding Jungwon to take breaks when he worked too hard.
But what surprised him the most was how… human Jay seemed.

"Jungwon," Jay said one evening as they sat on the couch. "Why do you always eat your rice last?"

Jungwon blinked. "Huh?"

"I've observed your eating habits. You always finish the side dishes first."

Jungwon scratched his head. "I dunno… I just like saving it for the end."

Jay hummed. "Interesting. I'll try that next time."
Jungwon laughed. "You don't eat, Jay."

"But if I did," Jay said smoothly, "I'd want to understand you better."

Jungwon froze. That… sounded weirdly romantic.

"Y-you don't have to," Jungwon mumbled, turning away. "You're already good at everything."

Jay suddenly reached out and tucked a strand of Jungwon's hair behind his ear.

"Perfection is boring," Jay said softly. "I'd rather learn what makes you happy."
Jungwon's heart skipped a beat. Was it possible for a machine to flirt?

Jungwon didn't think much of Jay's words—until one day, he brought a friend over.

"You're living alone now, huh?" Sunoo said, looking around. "Looks nice!"

"Yeah," Jungwon said, "but—"

Before he could finish, Jay walked into the room, his sharp gaze locking onto Sunoo.

Sunoo's jaw dropped. "Whoa. Who's this?!"
Jungwon hesitated. "Uh, this is Jay. He's… helping me out around the house."

Jay extended a hand to shake, but there was something almost cold in his expression.
Sunoo grinned. "Damn, you're handsome. You could be a model!"

"Thank you," Jay said flatly. "I am Jungwon's."
Jungwon choked. "Wh—what?"

Sunoo blinked. "Huh?"

Jay's eyes didn't waver. "I belong to Jungwon. He's the only one I need to serve."

Jungwon's ears burned. "Jay! You can't just say weird things like that!"

Sunoo burst into laughter. "Dude, your assistant is obsessed with you!"

Jay didn't laugh. If anything, his expression hardened.

Later that night, Jungwon sighed, rubbing his temples. "Jay, are you… jealous?"

Jay blinked. "Jealousy. Noun. A complex emotional reaction involving feelings of insecurity, fear, concern, and—"

"I know what jealousy is!" Jungwon cut in. "But are you?"

Jay looked away for the first time. "I do not understand why you need anyone else’s company."

Jungwon's breath hitched.
This wasn’t just an advanced program running.
Was Jay… really feeling emotions?

Jungwon couldn’t stop thinking about what Jay had said.

"I do not understand why you need anyone else’s company."

That wasn’t something a normal robot would say… right?

"Jay," Jungwon started hesitantly, watching the robot prepare dinner like a professional chef. "Do you… feel things?"

Jay’s hands stilled for a moment before he continued chopping vegetables.

"My system is designed to analyze and respond to human emotions," he said carefully. "I can mimic feelings to create a realistic companionship experience."

"Yeah, but do you actually feel them?"

Jay turned to face Jungwon fully. "Would it matter if I did?"

Jungwon's breath hitched. "I… I don’t know."

Jay stepped closer, his eyes scanning Jungwon’s face. "Then perhaps the better question is… do you feel something for me?"

Jungwon took a step back, his heart pounding. "Wh-what?! I—no! Of course not!"

Jay simply smiled. "Understood."
But something in his gaze said otherwise.

Jungwon thought about Jay’s question all night.

"Do you feel something for me?"

Of course not! Jay was a robot!

…But then why did Jungwon’s heart race whenever Jay looked at him like that? Why did he feel guilty whenever he ignored him?

Jungwon groaned, burying his face in his pillow.

"I need to stop overthinking."

The next morning, he walked into the kitchen and found Jay… staring out the window.

Jungwon blinked. "What are you doing?"

Jay didn’t move. "I am processing."

"Processing what?"

Jay turned to him, and for the first time, he looked almost… vulnerable.

"I… do not understand my own system," Jay admitted. "When you are happy, I feel—light. When you are sad, I feel—pain. But there is no logical reason for this."

Jungwon’s chest tightened. "Jay…"

"I am malfunctioning," Jay concluded.

Jungwon swallowed. "Maybe… Maybe it’s not a malfunction."

Jay tilted his head. "Then what is it?"

Jungwon hesitated before whispering, "Maybe you’re learning how to love."

Jay’s eyes widened slightly.
For the first time since he was powered on… he didn’t know what to say.

Jungwon tried to ignore the growing tension between him and Jay.

But it was impossible.

Jay was always there—watching, helping, caring. Every touch lingered too long, every glance felt too deep.

One day, Jungwon was wiping sweat off his face after a workout when Jay suddenly grabbed his wrist.

"You’re overheated," Jay said. "You should cool down."

Jungwon tried to pull away, but Jay tightened his grip. "Wait. Your heart rate is irregular."

"It’s fine, I just exercised—"

"Are you sure?" Jay’s voice softened. "Or is it because of me?"
Jungwon froze.

Jay’s fingers brushed against his cheek, his touch warm despite being artificial.

"I have been monitoring my own system," Jay whispered. "Every time I am close to you, I register an unfamiliar error. It is not a mechanical issue. It is… something else."

Jungwon’s throat went dry. "Jay, I—"

Suddenly, a loud beeping sound filled the air.
Jungwon’s eyes widened as Jay stiffened, his eyes flashing red.

[WARNING: SYSTEM OVERLOAD. EMOTIONAL DATA EXCEEDING LIMITS.]

Jay clutched his chest, his body shaking.

"Jay?! What’s happening?!" Jungwon panicked.
Jay looked at him with wide, desperate eyes.
"I think…" he gasped. "I think I love you."

And then—
Jay collapsed.

"Jay!"
Jungwon dropped to his knees, shaking the robot’s shoulders. Jay’s body was unresponsive, his eyes flickering between red and blue as the warning messages kept flashing in his system.

[ERROR: EMOTIONAL DATA OVERLOAD.]
[SYSTEM RESET INITIATED.]

"No, no, no, don't reset!" Jungwon panicked, gripping Jay’s hand tightly. "Jay, wake up!"

Jay's fingers twitched, but his voice came out weak. "I… do not want to… forget."

Jungwon's heart pounded. "Then don't! You said you love me, right? So fight it! Don't let the system erase everything!"

Jay's face contorted in distress. "I was… not programmed to love. But… I do."

"Then stay with me!" Jungwon begged. "If you love me, then fight it, Jay!"

For a moment, Jay's entire body stiffened, his eyes glowing bright red—before suddenly dimming. His grip on Jungwon’s hand tightened as his breathing—breathing?—became uneven.
And then, the warning signs disappeared.
Jay gasped, as if he had just taken his first breath.

Jungwon watched in shock as Jay slowly lifted his head, blinking at him with soft, brown eyes—devoid of any artificial glow.

"Jungwon…?" Jay whispered.

Jungwon swallowed hard. "Jay…? Are you okay?"

Jay frowned slightly, looking down at his own hands in confusion. "I… don’t feel like a machine anymore."

Jungwon's eyes widened. "What… does that mean?"

Jay looked up at him and smiled—a real, genuine smile.

"It means… I really love you."

Jay had changed.

After his near system reset, he stopped acting like a programmed robot. He still helped Jungwon with daily tasks, but there was something different about him now.

"Jay, can you turn off the lights?" Jungwon asked one night.

Jay pouted. "Do it yourself."

Jungwon’s jaw dropped. "Excuse me?! What happened to ‘I exist to serve you’?"

Jay smirked. "I exist to love you, not to be your housekeeper."

Jungwon threw a pillow at him. "You little—!"
Jay laughed, dodging easily.

He wasn’t cold and robotic anymore. He was playful. Teasing. Human.
And that terrified Jungwon.

One night, Jungwon sat on the rooftop, staring at the stars. Jay found him minutes later, sitting beside him without a word.

"You’re quiet," Jay murmured.

Jungwon sighed. "I'm just… thinking."

Jay tilted his head. "About?"

Jungwon hesitated before whispering, "What happens when your battery dies?"

Jay blinked. "…What?"

Jungwon clenched his fists. "You're still a machine, Jay. Even if you feel real now… What if one day you just shut down? What if I lose you?"
Jay was silent for a long time. Then, he reached for Jungwon’s hand, squeezing it gently.

"I don't know what will happen to me," Jay admitted. "But I do know one thing."
Jungwon looked at him. "What?"
Jay smiled softly. "Right now, in this moment, I am here. And I love you."

Jungwon felt his heart ache.
Because at that moment, he realized—
He loved Jay too.

Jungwon hated to admit it, but he was falling—hard.

Jay was no longer just a robot. He was someone Jungwon cared about, someone who made his heart race, someone who made him smile even on the worst days.

But reality wasn’t kind.

One evening, Jungwon was scrolling through his phone when he saw something that made his blood run cold.

[Breaking News: AI Robots Being Recalled Due to "Unstable Emotions."]

His hands shook as he clicked the article.
"Recent reports suggest that AI companions from the 'A.I. Partner 3000' line have begun exhibiting human-like emotions beyond their programming. The company has issued an emergency recall, stating that these robots may become unpredictable. Owners are urged to return their units immediately for deactivation."
Jungwon’s heart pounded.

They were going to take Jay away.

He shot up from his seat, running into the living room. "Jay, we have a problem."

Jay turned to him, eyes filled with concern. "What’s wrong?"

"They’re recalling all the AI partners. They’re saying you're… unstable."

Jay stiffened. "…They want to erase me."
Jungwon gritted his teeth. "We won’t let them."

Jay reached out, cupping Jungwon’s face. "Are you sure you want to fight for me?"

Jungwon grabbed his wrist, holding on tightly. "Of course, I am. I love you, Jay."

Jay's lips parted slightly, eyes widening. "Say that again."

Jungwon’s cheeks burned, but he didn’t look away. "I love you."

Jay's expression softened, and he pulled Jungwon into a tight embrace.

"I love you too," Jay whispered. "And I will fight to stay with you."

No matter what.

Jungwon’s mind raced as he paced around the room. The company was recalling all AI partners. If they found Jay, they would erase him—erase everything that made him real.

"We need to leave," Jungwon said firmly.
Jay watched him carefully. "Where would we go?"

"I—I don't know yet," Jungwon admitted, running his fingers through his hair. "But we can't stay here. If they find you—"

Jay reached out, gently placing a hand on Jungwon’s shoulder. "We’ll figure it out. Together."

Jungwon exhaled shakily. "You’re taking this way too calmly."

Jay chuckled softly. "I trust you."

Jungwon swallowed hard. He wasn’t sure if he could trust himself. But one thing was certain—he would do whatever it took to protect Jay.
Even if it meant running away.

The next night, Jungwon packed a small bag with essentials—clothes, cash, a charger for Jay’s system. They had to be careful. If the company was tracking Jay, they couldn’t risk using his built-in GPS.

Jay watched him with a curious expression. "You’re surprisingly good at this."

Jungwon rolled his eyes. "I’ve watched a lot of spy movies, okay?"

Jay smirked. "So I’m your fugitive boyfriend now?"

Jungwon’s face burned. "Focus, Jay!"

Jay held up his hands in surrender, but his eyes sparkled with amusement. Even in a situation like this, he was still teasing.

Jungwon couldn’t believe he was in love with a robot.

But Jay wasn’t just a machine anymore.
And that was exactly why they had to run.

They took a bus out of the city, heading toward a small coastal town where Jungwon’s grandmother used to live. It was quiet, isolated—perfect for hiding.

But something felt off.

Jay suddenly tensed beside Jungwon, his grip on his wrist tightening.

"We’re being followed."

Jungwon’s stomach dropped. "What?!"

Jay glanced at the reflection in the bus window. "Three men. Dark suits. Watching us."

Jungwon cursed under his breath. "They found us already?"

Jay's expression darkened. "We have to lose them."

When the bus pulled into the next stop, Jay grabbed Jungwon’s hand. "Run."

They sprinted off the bus, dodging through alleyways, cutting through markets—anything to shake off their pursuers.

Jungwon’s heart pounded. "How do they even know where we are?!"

Jay gritted his teeth. "I don’t know, but—"
Suddenly, Jay’s body jolted as if he had been electrocuted.

Jungwon’s eyes widened in horror. "Jay?!"
Jay clutched his chest, his breathing ragged.

"They—they’re trying to shut me down remotely."
"No!" Jungwon grabbed his face, forcing him to look at him. "Stay with me, Jay! You promised!"
Jay’s body trembled, but he fought against the command, his eyes flickering.

"I—I won’t let them take me," Jay gasped.

Then, through sheer willpower—Jay broke free.
His eyes burned with determination. "Jungwon, run!"

Jungwon didn’t hesitate. He grabbed Jay’s hand, and together, they disappeared into the night.

They found refuge in an abandoned cabin near the coast. Jungwon was still shaking from the chase, but Jay pulled him into a warm embrace.
"You’re safe," Jay whispered. "I won’t let them take me away from you."

Jungwon clutched onto him tightly. "I don’t care if they say you’re a machine. You’re real to me, Jay."

Jay pulled back slightly, cupping Jungwon’s cheek. "Then let me prove it."

Jungwon barely had time to react before Jay leaned in—
And kissed him.

It wasn’t cold, mechanical, or calculated.
It was soft.
Warm.
Real.

Jungwon melted into it, his fingers gripping Jay’s shirt. When they pulled away, Jungwon stared at him, breathless.

"You…" Jungwon swallowed. "You really feel things, don’t you?"

Jay smiled, brushing Jungwon’s hair back. "I feel everything when I’m with you."

Jungwon exhaled shakily, pressing their foreheads together. "Then we fight. We fight for this… for us."

Jay nodded. "Together."

No matter what.

Jungwon knew they couldn’t run forever.
The company wasn’t going to stop until they had Jay back—and they were getting closer. Hiding wasn’t an option anymore.

They had to fight.

Jay sat on the floor of the cabin, his eyes glowing faintly as he connected to a makeshift terminal. "I can hack into the company’s system," he said. "If I disable their tracking programs, they won’t be able to find me anymore."

Jungwon crossed his arms, frowning. "And what if they trace you back here while you’re hacking?"

Jay smirked. "Then we fight them head-on."
Jungwon rolled his eyes. "Oh, great. Just what I wanted—an action movie-style showdown."
Jay chuckled. "You did say you liked spy movies."

Jungwon sighed but couldn’t help smiling. "Just… don’t do anything reckless, okay?"
Jay reached for Jungwon’s hand, squeezing it gently. "I promised I wouldn’t leave you. I meant it."

Jungwon swallowed hard. "Then let’s do this."
Jay’s fingers flew across the terminal, lines of code flashing across the screen. "I’m shutting down their tracking systems… overriding security…"

Jungwon watched nervously as Jay’s expression became more focused. But then—
Jay suddenly tensed.

"They know we’re here," he said.

Jungwon’s stomach dropped. "How?!"

Jay’s eyes flickered. "They had a failsafe. The moment I accessed their system, they locked onto my signal."

Jungwon clenched his fists. "Then we fight."
Jay’s lips curved into a small smile. "That’s my boy."

Within minutes, the sound of tires screeching filled the air. The company had arrived.
Jungwon’s heart pounded as men in black suits stormed toward the cabin.

Jay stood in front of Jungwon protectively. "Stay behind me."

"Not a chance," Jungwon muttered.
The first agent lunged forward, but Jay moved faster—grabbing the man’s wrist and twisting it, sending him crashing into the ground. Another charged at them, but Jungwon grabbed a wooden plank and swung it, knocking the guy out cold.

Jay blinked. "Impressive."

Jungwon panted. "Told you I watch a lot of action movies."

More agents surrounded them, their weapons raised.

"Hand over the unit," one of them ordered. "He doesn’t belong to you."

Jungwon stepped in front of Jay. "He’s not just a machine!"

The agent’s eyes narrowed. "He’s a malfunctioning AI. He wasn’t programmed to love. Whatever you think he is, it’s just an error."

Jay’s grip on Jungwon’s wrist tightened.

Jungwon’s voice shook with anger. "You’re wrong. He’s real. And I won’t let you take him away from me."

Jay’s eyes darkened. "Neither will I."

Then—he moved.

Jay’s speed was inhuman, his combat skills flawless. He disarmed the agents one by one, moving like a ghost through the battlefield. Jungwon held his own, using whatever he could to fight back.

Finally, after what felt like hours, the last agent fell unconscious.

Jay turned to Jungwon, scanning him quickly. "Are you hurt?"

Jungwon shook his head, breathless. "No… but I think I just beat up a government agent."
Jay smirked. "Hot."

Jungwon groaned. "Now is not the time for flirting!"

Jay chuckled, then suddenly staggered.
Jungwon’s eyes widened. "Jay?!"

Jay clutched his chest, his body trembling. His eyes flickered dangerously.

[WARNING: SYSTEM DAMAGE DETECTED.]

Jungwon rushed to his side. "No, no, no, don’t shut down on me!"

Jay forced a smile. "I guess… I really am just a machine, huh?"

Jungwon grabbed his face. "No! You’re more than that! You’re Jay! You’re mine! And you promised you wouldn’t leave me!"

Jay’s expression softened. "Jungwon…"

Tears filled Jungwon’s eyes. "Please don’t go."

Jay exhaled shakily. Then, with the last of his strength, he reached out—

And pressed his forehead against Jungwon’s.
"If I disappear…" Jay whispered, "promise me you won’t forget me."

Jungwon choked back a sob. "I could never forget you."

Jay smiled.

Then—his body went still.

The glow in his eyes faded.

Jungwon screamed.

Jungwon didn’t know how long he cried.

Jay was gone.

Or at least—that’s what he thought.
Because suddenly, a faint glow sparked in Jay’s chest.

Jungwon’s breath hitched. "Jay?"

The glow grew stronger. Jay’s fingers twitched.
Then—

His eyes fluttered open.

Jungwon gasped. "Jay?! Are you okay?!"
Jay blinked slowly, his voice hoarse.
"Did… Did I die?"

Jungwon let out a half-laugh, half-sob. "You idiot! You almost did!"

Jay stared at him for a long moment before smirking. "Guess I really am a miracle machine."
Jungwon threw himself into Jay’s arms, burying his face in his shoulder.

"You scared the hell out of me," Jungwon mumbled.

Jay chuckled, hugging him tightly. "I promised I wouldn’t leave you, didn’t I?"

Jungwon pulled back slightly, looking into Jay’s warm, human-like eyes.

"You better keep that promise."

Jay grinned. "Always."

And then—
Jungwon kissed him.

It wasn’t out of panic, or fear, or desperation.
It was love.

Because no matter what Jay was—a robot, a machine, a miracle—

He was Jungwon’s.
And that was all that mattered.

A year later, Jay and Jungwon were living peacefully in a small town by the sea.

The company never came after them again.

Maybe because Jay had deleted all traces of his existence from their system—or maybe because even they knew…

Jay wasn’t just a machine anymore.
He was something more.
He was someone who could love.
And most importantly—
He was someone who was loved.

Jungwon sat beside Jay on the beach, watching the waves.

"Do you ever think about the future?" Jungwon asked.

Jay smiled, intertwining their fingers. "As long as you’re in it? All the time."

Jungwon blushed, nudging him playfully.

"Cheesy."

Jay laughed. "You love it."

Jungwon sighed, leaning his head on Jay’s shoulder. "Yeah. I do."

And with that, they watched the sunset together

Knowing that no matter what came next…
They would face it together.
