Work Text:

Their roommate Kayla had left to spend the weekend at her boyfriend’s. (Thank god)

Guy had been looking for more excuses to hang out with his other roommate alone and now was the perfect chance. The only problem was he had to build the courage to ask them out.

They had been close for a while, bonding over their shared hatred for their roommate and finding other similarities such as enjoying the same shows and games. Every once in a while they had planned small hang out sessions together whenever Kayla had been out of the house and they both found them quite enjoyable. Something Guy wasn’t ready for however was his developing feelings for them.

He had wanted to confess for a while now but it seemed as though honey had been avoiding him. Was it something he said? Was he too forward? How can he fix something that he wasn’t entirely sure of what he did wrong?
————————————————————————

Honey had never felt this way about anyone before. Well, at least not to this extent.

It’s been hard keeping their feelings a secret from Guy so they just resorted to avoiding him. No matter how much it hurt seeing him so genuinely worried about them and him persistently asking if they were ok. Were they rushing into things? What if he didn’t feel the same way?

Maybe they just weren’t made for relationships. Throughout their life people have told them that they’re “too emotionally detached” or “too independent” and the most hurtful of them all
“Too much to deal with.”

Honey had never wanted to seem too mean to Guy. They loved him for crying out loud
Things just got difficult when it came to expressing said love for him.

Their thoughts were interrupted when they heard something hit their door. Was it Guy??

They got up from their bed and walked over to their door to see that he had left a small note. He must have slid it under the door.

“What a dork.” Honey thought to themselves as they picked up the note to read it.

In purple ink, he had written: hey. Mind coming out for a chat? Don’t worry, she’s gone lol
As if they hadn’t heard Kayla slam the door on her way out. But what was with the note? He could’ve just talked to them through the door like he’s been doing for the past few days. Maybe this was important.

————————————————————————
“This is it,” Guy muttered to himself out loud. “I’ll tell them tonight. Maybe we can order something to eat? No everything is closed. Maybe we can just watch a movie but no doubt I’ll end up forgetting and falling asleep. Maybe we can play a few rounds of smash? Yeah, that’s a good idea. Let them kick my ass in smash and say-“

His monologue had been cut short by the sound of Honey opening the door to their room. He was waiting for them to come sit on the couch next to him but that moment never came. He stood up and walked over to their door and he saw a folded up piece of paper. They had sent a note in return.

I’m not feeling too well. Maybe I should just stay in for tonight.

His usual smile had faded when he saw this. Why haven’t they wanted to hang out with him anymore? Now he had gotten worried. He was about to walk away when he noticed Honey’s shadow standing by their door. Maybe they were waiting for him to leave? Or maybe they wanted him to continue the game.

Guy rushed to his room in search of another piece of paper and his favorite writing pen. He quickly scribbled a few words on it and ran back to Honey’s room. Once he slid the paper in it was quickly taken up.

“So they were waiting for me.” He thought.
————————————————————————
Honey hoped the way they grabbed the note didn’t seem too desperate. They just couldn’t help being anxious about what he had written

Is there anything I can do to help? I was planning a little date out in the living room but we can take it to your room if you need me :)

Wait. He had planned a date? Like a romantic date all for them? Even after they had been avoiding him all week he still thought about them and wanted to help. They can’t deny that it had made them feel a certain way after reading. Honey had returned to their desk and wrote a short note for him and slid it back under the door waiting for another response.

It didn’t take Guy as long as they thought for him to pick the letter up and start muttering it out loud to himself.

————————————————————————
Maybe. I’m not too sure. What did you mean date? What’re you planning out there?

His smile had returned upon reading this. Finally, he decided to speak

“This is fun and all but I’m starting to run out of notebook paper. Can I come in and talk to you?

Honey couldn’t help the laugh that escaped them at the moment

“Took you long enough. Sure come in.”

Honey had opened the door and let Guy come in. Walking to their bed and sitting down as he shut the door behind him as he made his way to sit next to them.

They had sat in silence for a while before Honey decided to speak up first.

“So. Look Guy, I’m sorry for being so distant recently. I’ve just.. needed space”

Guy couldn’t help but feel like it was somehow his fault. Maybe he shouldn’t have started thinking they could be in a relationship together.

“Oh it’s ok” he starts. “Can I ask? Was it something I did”

“Not necessarily” Honey spoke. Avoiding eye contact with Guy they continue. “ I don’t really know how to explain but I’ve been having a hard time with something.”

After a moment of thinking he responds, “Yeah I understand. Is it something I can help with? I’m great at writing essays if that’s what it is!”

“No” Honey smirks “I’m ok with school stuff it’s more.. personal stuff. I don’t know how to go about telling someone something.”

“Oh. Like what?” He asks noticing how their hand inched closer to his in the moment

“I’m still not sure how to say it,” Honey says pulling their hand back. Noticing how intensely Guy is staring at them now. Has his eyes always been so pretty?

“I see. Well, I’m kinda having a similar problem right now. I kinda have a thing for this one person and well. They’re just driving me crazy. I want to let them know right but I don’t want to scare them away at the same time. I don’t want to come off as too intense.”

So he does like someone. Honey thinks. They try not to look too hurt as they finally lock eyes with him. He deserves to feel happy with someone. Even if that someone isn’t me

“Well, I’m sure whoever it is must be a very lucky person. Anyone you have eyes for must be pretty special. Besides, you could never come off as too intense. I like to say it’s just passion” Honey says with a smile

“Yeah. They sure are. The greatest person I know. But you really don’t think I’m too much to handle? ” He reaches his hand out towards honey’s watching as their fingers start to curl a little. He debated pulling his hand back until he saw their hands unclench and reach out towards his as well.

“Of course not. Sure you watch the same episodes of Star Trek and you like to go on rants about your DnD character as well as talking about your latest writing project, but I think it’s nice to hear someone so passionate about something.”

“You aren’t so bad yourself. “ he says with a wink. “Thank you for always listening to those rants by the way”

This was it. The warmth radiates through their skin as he looks at them with nothing but love and affection in his gaze. But he liked someone else. But the way he was slowly Inching closer told them otherwise.

Wait. Am I that someone special?

They had stayed there in silence together but it was pleasant. The way Honey was looking at guy suggested that maybe they had felt the same way about him. He decided to take a chance.

“Hey. You can tell me if I’m reading the room wrong and you can kick me out if this is too forward but.. I love you. And really I mean I love you. You always have people's interests at heart. You might not show it outwardly but I can tell how much you love the people you trust.”

It took Honey a moment to realize what had just been said. He loved them. They were his special person. This was finally their chance to come out and say what had been on their mind.

“I love you too Guy. I’m sorry I couldn’t work up the courage until now to finally say anything but didn’t want to ruin our friendship. I didn’t want to rush into anything we were unsure of.”

“You don’t have to worry about rushing into anything. We can go at our own pace.”

They were holding hands now. While they hadn’t been ready to kiss yet, they still enjoyed the rest of their night together. After spending a couple of hours watching movies and playing video games it was been time to part ways and for Guy to return back to his room,

“Hey.. do you maybe want to sleep in my room tonight? Not like- sleep together sleep together but you know, just like. Spending a little more time together? I don’t want this night to end yet”

Guy smirks at them and says, “Of course honey. I’d love to have a sleepover in your room. Maybe tell some ghost stories?”

Honey rolls their eyes at Guy. He may be a dork but at least he’s their dork.

They end up staying up a little later talking about nothing until finally, Honey falls asleep. Guy wraps his arms around them as they nuzzle closer. He gazes at Honey as he gets comfortable. He’s glad he built up the courage to confess as his breathing slows and his eyelids finally start to close. He ends up drifting to sleep too finding comfort in the atmosphere they created together.
