"The world of imagination transposed into fanfiction" By Kara Danvers

Summary:

As the new editor in chief of Catco, Kara had to make sure that the content that the readers were consuming had reached the people of the generation. Having no other idea on what to do, Kara makes some interesting discoveries... More about what she felt for her best friend than the imagination of others.

Notes:

It made sense to me. Kara is a good writer. What writer would not come across Ao3?

Chapter Text

It felt like the weight of the Earth–and a ton of other planets–were off her chest. Kara had finally rectified the situation and all things were working out as they should. From all of the villains and trauma she had to endure. She felt relieved rather than stressed for the first time in many years as both Supergirl and Kara Danvers. She is finally reconnected with her best friend Lena and that is all she could ever ask for. Well furthermore, the whole world knows she is Supergirl which is all the way scary, but now she was whole. As if she never had to hide behind a clumsy and clever girl anymore.

Lena and Kara have been close, especially after the wedding of Alex and Kelly where they had hugged it out. It was then, Kara finally realized that she had everything except herself. It was where she realized that everything was fixed for her and all she had to do was to no longer pretend. And that was that.

The two girls have been on continuous dates whether it was work-related or not. Lena would show up to Cat-co unexpectedly and Kara would do the same. Only she knew when the Luthor had those tedious meetings in the day. She really did know her way around her best friend and she was good at it. And as always, Kara did her best to make her best friend the happiest.

She would stop by the grocery store and pick out her favorite flowers since the Luthor would do the same, always complimenting her including her sweet hypnotizing green eyes that reflect the light of the sun like stars, text her in her free time almost about anything, and send her the funniest shit ever on instagram a billion times.

Finally, her favorite part is the way she would turn Luthor into a bright red tomato, almost like a sun-burnt toast type of red. Whether at a cafe for lunch when they go silent or at a fancy gala that Lena invited to her filled with nobles and aristocrats from around the country. It was always the headline of her day, Kara would make the pick-up line or say something dirty that would make Lena grow red while Kara collapses laughing at her friend. Of course, in return, the Luthor would cooperate even in public around tons of people which would make her blush in return.

Seeing her laugh made her happy and every day made everything whether piles of stress or people would just make her day a hundred times better.

As she heads to Cat-co today, Kara takes out her personal computer, the one that isn’t touched by the company and goes on an internet spree about the most random things ever. It was mostly for ideas about her next biggest article she is about to write which kept Cat-Co in the highest media position in all of the national news. There was nothing much on the internet instead of cute puppy videos that she resists to touch every single day. She would be stuck for hours if she had decided to take up on the temptation crawling towards her from the videos.

“Ms. Danvers, here are the latest reports on current news that you wanted!” A cheerful voice behind a tower of folders came through into her eardrums. It was her new assistant that had been doing more work than she had asked.

“Oh Keira! Thank you so much!” (Yes ironically that is her assistant's actual name) Kara gratefully appreciating the effort, stands up to help the young assistant with the pile setting it down on her desk. “You know? You didn’t have to get all of them for me.”

Keira chirps happily in reply, “Oh yeah! I know!” She then rubs the back of her neck to stop it from sweating, “I just like going the extra mile, it’s just what I do.”

Kara shook her head in amusement of what she had said. Gosh, the memories it brought. From Cat yelling at her about a mistake in her salad order to the somber goodbye she gave to Kara and Supergirl. Which was not surprising at first when she had realized that her boss had figured out her two identities as a human and a super alien with all the power in the world sort-of.

As Keira started to leave the room in a timely manner, her tracks suddenly stopped, and she turned around to face her boss who was perplexed at this sudden movement, “Um Miss Danvers,” her voice wavered on the last syllable of Kara’s last name, “Are you and Ms. Luthor um you know?”

She stumbles from her stance as she tilts her head in slight confusion. Normally, her glasses would have fallen off slightly from the bridge of her nose, though sometimes she still forgets about it. She touches her nose to get in closer to the topic, “uh Keira, no we aren’t.” She smiles, waving off the tension from the question she was given.

Keira backs off in a non-offensive manner, “Sorry Ms. Danvers!” her smile crawls down to a neutral expression, pausing to rethink her topic and the way her boss is feeling around it, but with Kara’s smile she continued on, “It’s just that on the internet there is this website that I found.”

Kara raises a brow, not only was she concerned about this question being linked to a website on the internet, but she was curious. “What website is that?”

“Uh-,” Her assistant almost jumped when those words came out. She was expecting her to be nonchalant about it and to shoot it off. “Well it’s a fanfiction website. It has all the fandoms you can expect. Like those of your video games, movies, real life you name it!”

Her response came slowly, tailing Keira to finish the sentence, “So, this website is important because…”

She realized that she really didn’t want to go through this. To teach another person who knew nothing about fanfiction. It was a pain and she had experience of teaching some of her colleagues before. Upsetting to those who thought that the ‘E’ in the website was E for everyone and still opened the fic with enthusiasm only to learn that the ‘E’ was different.

She exclaimed politely to her boss who was awaiting her answer, “Well Ms. Danvers! I think you just gotta figure it out yourself,” Keira then led herself towards the exit of her boss’ office, “Thank you for your time and uh,” her face changed and she started to plead with desperation, “if you ever go on that please please please do not click on anything that has an E rating. You’ll regret it.”

As Keira left the office in a hurry, Kara muttered, “Huh, it must be that bad then…” Without much left to do in her office, she sat back down in her cushioned chair and opened her laptop to research the new information she received from colleagues. If there is one thing about Kara, it’s that she always takes up any idea no matter the amount of stupidity placed in it.

As the browser of her laptop loaded into what she had searched, her curiosity sparked ideas into her mind. The amount of fandoms she had seen just from scrolling. Keira was right, it had everything. Ranging from her favorite movies to her favorite book series, these writers on the website have surely gotten every corner of fandom.

It was surprising to see several talented writers on this fanfiction website and calling it a hobby? She bet that some of these people were aspiring authors or journalists in college based on the writing style. More than surprising, it was impressive to see how many people read these stories published for anyone to read. The amount of Kudos and Hits were astonishing to the professional writer. Maybe she should start messaging some of the writers to work for Catco.

Kara then started to wonder, what could’ve Keira possibly connected her and Lena to the website? Unless… She slid her cursor to the search bar of the website to look up a ship she hoped really wasn’t a thing. The fanfiction that she had searched up disappeared leaving a bubble moving in circular motions, doing the thinking to find what she thought was impossible.

In all but a second, her whole body froze with chills crawling up and down her spine like crazy. The words at the top of the page had written out, “20000 works of Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor”.

Wow. Just wow. 20000 works. How many people would have seen the chemistry they had together? It was just playful banter after all and it wasn’t like she meant it romantically. It was all platonic. The same way Lena saw their relationship. This was so abnormal for her to go crazy on something that was as silly as fake stories about them being attracted to each other romantically.

Then again, she thought about her perspective and how she felt and saw those actions. The way they held hands and how her stomach would burst with joy and surprise as she lightly swung their arms up and down. She always wanted to hold her hand every time they walked together. Her eyes being dangerously beautiful and Kara herself has nothing to say to it because nothing in the world made her more happy than to see the bright smile on Lena Luthor’s face. Okay, so maybe there was something she felt. Like only a little bit. For sure, it only felt like they were great best friends, but then again, what if it was different? What if there was more to what she wanted?

She shrugged it off in the end, they were the best of friends! It’s like all of those videos that say that people think you're dating because of how close they are. Nonetheless, Kara dragged her mouse to the button that said, “create a new account”. It was just so that she could figure out this Supercorp (The ship name?) thing out.

The ship of the two of them brought her out of surroundings so much that her super-hearing couldn’t hear the carpet-muffled steps coming from another person to see her. The person wrapped her arms around the busy weasel, Kara, scaring the blonde woman.

“Workaholic much?” The voice spoke in a matter of sarcasm, “I know, I’m a hypocrite myself.”

Kara yelped out of her seat, but it wasn’t long before she figured who wrapped her in an amazing blanket of warmth. She gracefully held the arms of the Luthor, looking up into her eyes, “Hey Lena, how are you?”

Lena lets go of Kara, leaving her cold without her grasp as she starts to fiddle with the items that lay on her desk, “I’m good darling. Just decided I wanted to see how Cat-co was doing.”

“Cat-co is going great!” Kara smiled widely, closing the fanfiction tab on her laptop. “Why are you really here to stop by?”

She gasped with another hint of sarcasm, “Oh my, straight to the point already? I’m flattered.” She groaned softly, “Okay, I’m just so bored of my office walls. I needed to get out of there. Is that more liable?”

Kara grimaced, a sharp inhale through her teeth grew, “I’m so sorry Lee, I can’t have lunch today. The office is piled up with work.”

She felt the roll of Lena’s eyes as she walked up behind Kara’s seat and placed her hands on her shoulders. Lena smiles smoothing the rough muscles around the area. “You really need a break Supergirl.”

Kara moans from the relief into her answer, “Listen, I wish I could, but if I wait more the piled work will double, triple even.”

Lena leaned down to her level with a smirk, but she knew that her friend was serious and patted her shoulder, “Well if you’re so busy, I should probably leave. Text me when you get home okay? Love you!”

As Lena shut the glass doors to her office, Kara felt a cold shiver travel down her spine. The realization hit her quick once the Luthor left the room. She should’ve asked her to stay…just for a little longer because that warm presence had gone out the door.

She groans into her computer, regretting her life choices. Kara couldn’t believe that she shooed her own friend away. She could’ve just hung around like on the couch while they worked or something like that. She inhaled a sharp regret, “Why am I so dumb?”

On the other hand, Lena was gone which meant she could take a look at what all the fuss was about. Reopening the tab from her history, her mouse hovered over the several stories created by random users from all over the world. It was extraordinary to see the world through another lens of a random human being probably across the country.

When she opened the stories that were mostly rated general as per instruction by her assistant, it was mostly confession fictional events that were mostly real things that had happened, but there was no actual confession within that moment. People just assumed and placed it in there.

There was even a fanfic of her and Lena agreeing to fake date and do all these things so that Lena would not have any bad media on her back. Another one was where Lena had not forgiven her about the reveal of Supergirl which was weird at first, but it had a happy ending to it and Kara apparently found herself growing a smile with each fiction she read.

This could be the headline of the top article of Cat-co! She can just imagine it. “The world of imagination transposed through fanfiction”. It was great because Kara squealed thinking of the title in just under a second. If people post on the fanfiction website so much, the article could grab the attention of the people to show that people have better ideas than directors or authors of books at that point.

Well if she wanted her way into the world of fanfiction she had to experience it herself! Why, so many people have gotten fandom famous for their works especially in Kara’s specific ship with her best friend. It’s not like she was going to get caught, hence the fake name in the website, making it completely anonymous.

Once she had finally created a new post, her fingers danced to an idea rested in her head for a storyline that she thought readers would enjoy.

“Do you know that this won’t stay forever?” She asked. The two friends were laying down on the bed of grass on the hill in the city they called home. Where they had first met after encountering each other at a simple interview that was meant to last two minutes of their lives.

She remembered how those two minutes turned into an adventure of a lifetime. They had become close and she knew by instinct that when they had met, it was meant to be. The timeline had set this course on purpose.

She had also remembered the fun times she had with her. At lunch and dinner dates, movie nights, and quick stops at work. All of those meaning the world to her. Then a thought came into mind staring into her green eyes that hypnotized the heck out of her, “If I had to choose to save the world or save her… I don’t think I could do that. I don’t think I could choose.”

Sometimes she got too caught in her world of thought and misses some important things happening currently in the present. Her friend finally replied confused, “Why do you say that?”

She stammers, taking off her glasses that had been getting in her way, “ I don’t know, I feel like this is happening so fast and that- that we are slipping away.”

Her friend gives her a tender smile like a warm hug, “Awww c’mon now. Don’t feel like that.”

“But I can’t stop, a- and when I’m with you. I almost… I- almost–” She had almost said it when she looked back at her friend who gave the sweetest understanding expression.

“It’s okay, you can spill it out to me.”

“I- I almost fe- fell in love with you.” She buried her face into her legs, “and- I- don’t mean platonically.”

“Ohh. Oh, I understand now.”

“Yeah, me too, I’ll- uh go head out now.”

A grip on her arm tugged her like a lead. “No, no. I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Then… what do you mean?” She blushed, tugging at her shirts collar.

Her friend chuckles at how cute she is when she blushes, “I mean that it makes sense on why you’re acting like this toward me.”

“I- I guess, but I—“

“I’m serious. Now, come down. We’re not done yet.”

“O-okay.” She inhaled deeply, the tension in my shoulders receded, and she sat back down right beside her.

“Is there anything I can do?”

She starts fidgeting with her fingers again, she really cannot keep composure, “Um, not really. I uh don’t know. I mean, never mind. This is something- I can’t do. Or won’t do? I don’t know. Can you please help me stop rambling???”

She looked away from her best friend, the one that she had trusted so much. It felt illegal to look at her. She had urges to just go for it even if her friend didn’t feel the same.

She looked at her, which prompted her to turn around, “Hey, I know how it feels. To be honest… I felt like it was more than friendship. When I first broke up with him… I was alone, until you came along. You helped me. I thought at first it was platonic, but now. I don’t know. It feels more than that.”

She moved a strand of her hair and looped it around her ear and saw the silver earrings that were a hidden treasure. Not for a particular reason. Then, she turn away as fast as possible, oh gosh, what is she doing? “Sorry, you’re just beautiful, that's all.”

She clenched my hand and gripped it, “Don’t be. And thank you. You’re so sweet.”

She cleared my throat, noticing how close we’ve grown, and only a few inches away from each other. “Um do you mind if I uh.”

She didn’t have to say anything. Nevertheless do anything as I had cupped her cheeks and planted a kiss on her forehead, gosh she loves her.

“I love you so much.” |

Kara’s cursor was almost done with the confession that was going to send her own fandom into a huge fluff-fest. Once she wrote out the words, her heart throbbed. The door swung open.

Lena marched right in, ignoring her friend’s assistant that was about to walk in with more reports, “Kara! I forgot to give your jacket back. I used it yesterday and I told myself I was going to bring it back. Do you think we can get some coffee? I could use a bit for a 7-12 am work shift–7 am, not pm.”

Kara flushed bright red immediately after hearing her voice, canceling the whole window with all her important work tabs opened.

Lena was not dumb to realize her best friend had turned into a bright tomato, maybe into the shade of ketchup if she was over-descriptive. “Oh wow, did something happen? You look a bit sick.”

She cleared her throat, but only to make the sound, “It’s uh nothing. I was just busy. I did not know you were coming back again.” She remembered back to Lena yapping about something she said ago. “...what were you saying again?”

Lena smirked, but refused to go off topic on what she thought Kara was doing, “Just that I needed to give your jacket back and that we should go out and get coffee.”

Lena dropped her things while Kara recollected all her thoughts into her mind into orderly fashion and answered Lena back, “Oh, of course Lena, we can get coffee.”

She chuckles noticing that Kara had been busy typing, “Well, I hope your hands aren’t tired from all the writing. You seemed really aggressive. What were you writing about?” She saw Lena’s dark brown brow raise slightly.

“Oh, well it’s nothing. Just a little thing for the fans of Catco. I’ve been trying to think outside the box lately.” Kara felt her palms growing in sweat as she continued to clench onto them to avoid suspicion from Lena.

“Okay, well I suppose we can talk about the Supergirl fandom over coffee.” She winked and left the room as soon as Keira entered the room.

Keira shifted to see the Luthor leave the room with a breeze and back to her boss. Kara fell down face first onto her desk with flushed cheeks in despair. “So…”

“Keira!” Kara snapped, she inhaled deeply which in turn calmed the assistant, “Give me the reports please?”

Keira nodded with obedience and quickly handed the reports over. She smiled sheepishly, running out the room to avoid the glare from her boss. Typically that glare would mean that she was about to get fired, so her running out of the room lessened her chances.

With everyone out of her office (finally), she reopened the tab and started working on it once more. Meticulously typing the whole story into place by adding a bunch of lore into place along with the confession scene being more clear on how it happened with no interruptions. She was ready to publish it.

The coffee shop’s door slid open, Kara and Lena had gotten their order to-go. They ultimately decided to get their steps in as they both have been cooped up at the office. Eventually, the two women made it to the National City Central Park where kids were across the board of hills and fields of the park. The fountains still sparkling light out to those who walk by. Other's came with their pets to play fetch. Lena had stopped by a puppy who had lost track of the ball and decided to walk over to the humans. After, the owner had gotten off the phone, they took the puppy away and the two kept walking.

With a smug smile, Lena broke the silence that was filled with children’s laughter, “So Ms. Pulitzer, what is this ‘outside of the box thinking’ you’ve been doing?”

Kara gently laughs, bringing her cup up to her mouth, “Oh, it’s not a big deal. It’s just bringing things into perspective.”

“Oh?” She replied curiously, trying to get it out of her even before it is published,  “What do you mean perspective?”

Her eyes suddenly widened by Lena’s playful tone. She should not reveal what she was doing. Especially if it had something to do with her. Her sheepish laugh did not help the current situation at all, “Yep! All part of the plan.”

“Well, Kara. At least be open to it. I just found this amazing website that had a lot of interesting works. Maybe it might suffice your dabbling." Lena opened her phone to a page that almost looked familiar to Kara even when she was looking at it from the side of Lena's privacy screen. Lena made sure no one could hold her phone except her best friend which Kara had always felt the honor of having this opportunity as if it were a medal.

However, once the screen became clear to her, she immediately froze with the phone almost slipping from her grasp. Kara swallowed the invisible pill that formed as she saw what Lena pulled up on her phone, "Oh wow! Supercorp? What is this again?"

Lena responded with excitement, not acknowledging her friend's silent panic, "It's a bunch of fan written stories and it's about us getting together as a couple! I can't believe people think we're a couple!"

Don't say it! Don't say something stupid! Kara's mind wouldn't shut up, she kept her sheepish act to get rid of any suspicion like she has been for the last couple of days. This was all very new to her: feeling nervous around her best friend and thinking about how her feelings may have been more. It was all unpredictable for her and she hated the unpredictable. She had no plan for the way she was feeling in that moment. She just had to hope that Lena did not notice anything from the fanfiction website.

Right when Kara was pulling herself together, Lena squinted her eyes and took the phone out of her hand, "Oh hey, this user is odd, the CapedCrusader. It looks like your username on the other platforms you are on. This story looks well put and the descriptive detail is on point!"

There was a lamp post nearby and Kara really wanted to hit her head on it. She totally forgot her name on the fanfiction website had corresponded with the other usernames she had used. She noticed Lena continuing to scroll through the story, her reading looked intense. Maybe it was a good sign and that she was reading it just for giggles. It was like she was burning up. Not from the coffee, but from Lena. It was like Lena knew and was teasing her. No, not that, her best friend would never. It was all the voices in her head. This could ruin everything! From all the lunches and even just small talk. IT COULD RUIN A LOT OF THINGS.

It seemed as though there was steam coming out of Kara as she finally let out a yelp at Lena, "Okay! That's me! I am the CapedCrusader! I didn't even know I had that username til now!!!"

She was expecting laughter, but for once Lena was the confused one, "You mean this was your idea?"

She groaned, trying to weigh off the embarrassment, "I was just trying to appease the younger audience. You know how it is. As a writer, you have to keep up with the trends." Kara wanted to look into her friends eyes, but after that terrible confession, she continued to explain, "When I started looking into it. I read so many of them. 20000 works. Could you believe that? There are stories of us whether it is true or not."

"I never saw there were that many."

"It's not like they convinced me, but they reminded me what I felt before was real." Kara closed her eyes and started rambling really fast, "I realized I love you more than just a best friend and this is completely new to me. I want you and I want to feel your touch. It seems as though my feelings for you have always been there and I had never really noticed and I thought that writing about this could finally help me understand what was going on-"

Lena giggled from Kara's yapping. That was one of the things out of the infinite things she loved about her. "Oh Kara, I want you to know that I am madly in love with you too."

Lena watched as Kara innocently opened her eyes that had been waiting for a different reaction. She finally understood why Kara had been acting weird all those days. Kara Danvers was in love with a Luthor. The real life Supercorp. How ironic.

They were now at eyelevel, Kara's eyes reflecting the sun's shimmering light. It was better to see the reflection now than when she wore her glasses. Her heart was pounding like a slow bass drum. For the first time in a while, both were doing something uncoordinated. Slowly, Lena raised her hands and cupped her face, feeling the warmth of her skin and the softness of her cheeks beneath her touch. Her lips trembled, ready for whatever came next. The world around them seemed to pause. There was silence, not a single sound from dogs or children playing in the fields.

Kara leaned in, carefully as to avoid disturbing the moment. Then their lips touched, brushing ever so softly. A dance fluttered, full of emotions and it had needed no words to explain such feelings. For the first time, Kara heard Lena's heart pounding at a syncopated rhythm that matched hers. This was better than what she had thought to write in the one story she published. They both pulled out at the same time to take a breather, staring into each others eyes endlessly before kissing once more. This time, it was longer so that the feelings of tenderness lingered longer.

After they had pulled away for a second time Kara was too stunned to speak, so Lena did it for her, "Wow, that was..."

Kara finished her sentence having processed everything that had happened, "Super amazing! How could I go out in my life without it?!"

Lena laughed and placed a soft kiss on the Super's forehead turning it to an embrace, "You know what? That fanfic was a good piece."

Kara fell into the embrace and replied quietly, "Yeah, and it all had one good ending."

Chapter 2: Epilogue

Summary:

Keira did mention the E rated fics...

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

As Lena let go of the embrace, which was hard to do in her case, she pulled out another tab that had been on the same fanfiction website. She giggled, glancing up at the writer, "Looks like some people already went and made fics of us having sex."

Kara's eyes widened, so that's what she meant by E rated. She responded nervously as her face started to flush like a tomato growing into its red color, "We can talk about that later! When we are totally alone."

Lena gave her a smug look to keep the tease going, making Kara flush even more, "Oh really? Ms. Danvers, I didn't know you were ready for some action."

Lena looked back onto her phone to start reading the so-called fic that someone from wherever in the world made. However, as she read the first word, the Super quickly swept her up from her feet giving another sweet kiss on the Luthor's lips, savoring every moment even if it were just a second. Lena yelped in surprise, but was completely accepting into the next kiss Kara started. In between the kiss, her hand quickly swiped the phone away taking down the E rated fiction. Even when it was the sweetest kiss in the arms of her lover, Lena still realized what Kara had done with her phone.

Lena yelped as Kara let her down from being carried bridal style, which by the way made her feel like she was on cloud nine and the happiest woman ever; she tried to take back the phone from her exasperating, "Kara! I was reading that!"

Kara gave her a smug smile in return, "We can talk about that later, my love."

Lena smiles, putting away the phone knowing that it could give her ideas for the possible future in which they do it. "Alright then, I love you Kara Danvers."

She moved in to give her a peck on the lips, "And I truly love you too."

Kara was definitely going to have a talk with her assistant about this.

THE END

Notes:

Just a little something to end it off very very sweet (;
