Chapter Text
A loud train whistle blew and you watched your parents through the window with a frown. At the tender age of 14 your parents decided it was time to pick up everything in America and move to England. It was going to be a fresh start for you. The whole point was to be closer to your grandmother who lived in London. Your father was thrilled as he got to see his family and friends that he hasn't been able to see in years. However, this was a terrible time to be moving schools. You were completely bummed to be leaving your friends at Ilvermorny, people you had known for years now, and you were sure to be alone in a school where people have also known one another for years.
Your current predicament was the fact that you were virtually alone. The other people in your year were in separate train cars, leaving you to sit with a bunch of first years. Your only solace was a wiry little dog that sat on the bench next to you, laying its head on your lap with a sigh.

The first years had all been sorted and now it was just you waiting out in the hall, you little dog standing at your feet. Thankfully, you would not be the finale of the night. This year Hogwarts was hosting the Triwizard tournaments, meaning that other European schools were also here. Students of the visiting schools had gathered behind you, whispering in their native languages about your odd robes. You hadn't had time to grab some new robes in London so you still wore your deep blue Ilvermorny robes. A staff member who held the door knob turned to you, nodding to indicate that you were going in next.
“In addition to the new schools for the Triwizards Tournament, we are also introducing a foreign transfer student from the Ilvermorny School in the United states,” a regal voice boomed throughout the halls. “Please give a warm welcome to Miss Y/n Lovelace.”
The doors swung open, revealing hundreds of students seated on long tables. The sound of your shoes clicking against the floor filled the now silent room as you made your way to the front of the hall.
“Miss Lovelace will be undergoing the sorting ceremony to determine the house she will settle into for the rest of her school years here.”
An old hat was set upon your head as you looked into the crowd. You were filled with nerves as the old hat muttered to itself but kept your head up. Do not show weakness.
“Hmmm, very interesting. So cunning and yet- ah yes. A thirst for the unknown that never seems to stop. I think you would do well in,” the mumbling of the hat suddenly turned into a booming yell, “RAVENCLAW.”
A table of children erupted in cheers and you were ushered by the professors towards the table. You sat in the first empty spot you saw, turning your head and meeting eyes with a dreamy eyed blonde.
“I like your crup,” the girl spoke softly, reaching her hand down to pet the dog's head. “Very unusual pet to bring to school.”
“I got special permission since it's a late transfer. Emotional support reasons,” you smiled before sticking your hand out to shake hers. “I’m Y/n and you are?”
“Luna Lovegood,” the girl responded. “Our names are very similar. I wonder if we are related. Or perhaps this was a meeting of destiny.”
You laughed. Luna was a little bit of an oddball but very cutesy. She told you all about classes, the people, the dorms, little invisible creatures that caused confusion (you were still confused about that one). Luna was kind enough to offer to introduce you to some other people she knew in your year, although they were in a different house. You only knew one other person and you barely even knew him. Your father was barely close with his old classmates after he had moved to the states, but reached out when he found out that one of his friends’ son attended Hogwarts as well. Just as you were pondering on the status of the boy, a posh voice spoke from behind you causing you to turn.
“Lovelace,” a blonde boy stood behind you with two cronies at his side. “I can’t believe you got sorted into Ravenclaw. What would your father think of you? Could be worse though, you could have been a Hufflepuff. Or worse, a Gryffindor.”
“I suppose you are Draco Malfoy,” you said, a bit taken aback by the boy's sudden appearance. You weren’t the only one who was surprised at the boy's guest appearance at the Ravenclaw table as many people around you started to whisper. You stood and gave a small curtsy out of reflex. While the boy looked a bit taken aback at first, he took your hand in his and returned with a bow with a smug face.
“Move aside Lovegood,” he spoke rudely to the sweet girl as he grabbed a piece of bread from the table, much to the displeasure of the surrounding Ravenclaws. The blonde turned on his heel, gesturing for you to follow him as he strutted out of the great hall. He started explaining everything that Luna had already told you, though with a bit more condescension when talking about his fellow classmates.
“And don’t expect me to be this nice and accommodating during the rest of the school year,” Draco scowled and glanced at you as you two walked through the empty halls. “I’m only being nice because my father expects me to be your slave since it's your first day.”
“Oh I wouldn’t dream of it,” you said sarcastically, placing a hand over your heart. You giggled at the boy before skipping off down the hall, your dog barking at your feet happily. “Keep up Malfoy! Wouldn’t want your dear guest to be lost!”
You heard the boy grumbling something under his breath but just laughed.
“You're going to be a thorn in my side,” the boy groaned.
“Ah! Maybe,” you turned to face him, stalking towards Draco playfully. “But I plan on using my time here to find a nice English boy to play with. Preferably pure blood per my parents request.”
“Well it's not going to be me,” Draco almost laughed at you.
“Of course it's not going to be you, you're too easy.” The boy opened his mouth to ask what the fuck you meant by ‘easy’, but you continued talking. “My parents would love it if I ended up with someone like you. Rich, pureblood, not to mention a family friend. I need someone who they hate but can’t help but approve of. Someone who's the opposite of that. Really rough around the edges but still pureblood to keep the family name in tact. Nice, but definitely not marriage material. Someone-”
“Sounds like you're describing a Weasley,” Draco cackled, but your interest peaked.
“Weasley?” You ran to walk next to him again.
“Pureblood family but definitely would not be your parents’ cup of tea if they're anything like mine,” Draco started explaining. “They’re an ultra poor, muggle loving household with ten million kids. The only sane one is the head boy of Gryffindor. There are the twins who are a couple years ahead of us and complete dumbasses. And then there's Ronald. Weirdest bloke alive and best friends with the boy-who-lived, Harry Potter.”
“A perfect victim,” you gasped, causing Draco to raise an eyebrow.
“Please don't tell me you're going to publicly go for Ronald Weasley. I’m going to die by the hands of my father for letting you do that.”
“You already told me that you're only nice to me today,” you chirped as you two reached the entrance of the Ravenclaw dorms. You solved the riddle first try but before you could enter, a cold hand on your arm stopped you.
“Please don’t go for Weasley.”
“You don't control me~”
“Americans are dumb as shit.”
