Chapter Text
THE CONFINES
- The city where the main plot takes place
- Geography wise it is located in the middle of a desert
- Due to the harsh surrounding environment the city built walls to keep those conditions out
- This was also a tactic the government, The Council, used to further isolate the city from the disastrous world outside
- The city is thought to be run by a supercomputer known as The Heart but its location is unknown
- The city has 6 districts: Southside, Piles, Sylph, Gates, Nonpareil, and Vacant
-
SOUTHSIDE
- PYXIS NOTE: Name was inspired by the Southlands
- Poorest area
- Most dirty– constantly covered in mud, blood, oil, etc. as well as many exposed wires and pipes, blocked roads, collapsing buildings, and many more things
- The district with the most “Circuits” residing in it
- Enforcement is much looser than other districts yet has the most Watchers
- Most factories are between the Southside and the Piles
-
PILES
- PYXIS NOTE: Name was inspired by the Magic Mountain
- Lots of markets, primarily common medicine and scammable goods
- Loose enforcement, primarily Speakers
- Nowhere near as dirty asSouthside but still commonly considered the slums of the Confines
- Mostly common civilians but it’s also known as the birthplace of many, many well known business owners and millionaires
-
SYLPH
- PYXIS NOTE: Name was inspired by the Fairy Fort
- Primarily schools, higher medical practices, and theater
- Heavy enforcement, mainly Listeners and Watchers
- Typically lived in by middle class civilians
- Fairly clean, think typical littering and somewhat muddy and potholed streets
-
GATES
- PYXIS NOTE: Name was inspired by the Three Gs
- High fashion and luxuries sold here
- Consistently swept and rinsed
- Many corporation owners and lesser Listeners and Speakers live in the gates
- Heavy enforcement, mostly Watchers and Speakers
-
NONPAREIL
- PYXIS NOTE: Name was inspired by team BEST
- Pristine, but many oil spills do occur
- Mainly focuses on tech sells and manufacturing
- Primary Listeners and Speakers live here
- Neutral enforcement
-
VACANT
- PYXIS NOTE: Name was inspired by the Void
- The highest of high society in the Confines
- Not actually Vacant but it’s where the Council, Watchers, and some Listeners and Speakers live
- No enforcement of any of the laws considering it’s where the law lives
- Think bleached, gated neighborhood
- At this point in the Confines history, everything is digitalized: currency, locks and keys, books, etc. basically everything exists on a screen
- There are schools but for a very long time they were separate from “Circuits” to “Clears” which means many “Circuits” never went to school due to poor funding and school raids
- PYXIS NOTE: This is why in the story Joel can’t read or write very well, or when he does it’s backwards or illegible
- While in the present day of the story taking place, there are laws to protect “Circuits” better than what they used to be, “Circuits” still face a lot of challenges in society due to prejudices
- At this point there aren’t many live animals any more due to the whole desert thing so most pets are robotic animals. Normal pets have vastly different programming than service animals
- PYXIS NOTE: Jellie is a robotic animal that Scar technically got with service animal programming but Mumbo, per request of Scar, also made Jellie a very good pet as well
