Work Text:
On this day, there was not a dry to be found. In the plaza, wonderous occasion was taking place. It was the quadruple wedding of the Smiling Critter. Yes, all four couples were getting married at the same time. After lots of boring planning and headache-inducing talks, they had finally managed to pull it off. And what a sight it turned out to be. In the pews, sat the critters' friends and family, from the Longlegs family to the Wuggingtons to their own families (Catfeine was even holding her brother's infant daughter Kune, who waved happily to her dapperly dressed dad).
Heck, even the Nightmare Critters showed up.
At the altar were the couples themselves. DogDay was dressed in a black tunic, gold aiguillettes, red pants and a red cape with orange lining and sun-shaped cape clasp. Crafty was in a white, poofy gown with, a turquoise sash, and the whole ensemble topped off with a silver, sapphire-encrusted tiara.
CatNap had donned a black morning tailcoat, dark grey pants, white dress shirt with a wing collar, a lavender vest and a midnight purple bowtie. Picky's dress had a pinkish tinge to it and she heavily insisted she wear her late grandfather's cowboy hat.
Bubba was sporting the same kind of outfit as CatNap, but his coat was a double-breasted frock coat with a blue neck tie. Bobby's gown, compared to Crafty's was much smoother, was longer, trailing and was adorned with roses, matching the crown of yellow roses she wore on her head. Oh, and her makeup was smudged due to her tears of joy.
And finally, Kickin was wearing a cream tuxedo jacket with black pants and an orange bowtie. Hoppy, ever the tomboy, had opted to wear a white suit with a white veil.
Once the couples had all exchanged their vows, the pastor overseeing the wedding cleared his throat.
"Now, the couples would like for you to put your hands together for a very special performance." He announced.
"Alright guys, this is it." DogDay whispered. "Ready."
"I think so." Crafty squeaked with a red face.
"Yep!" Hoppy affirmed.
After a quick spritz of breath spray, Kickin cleared his throat.
"Ready!"
"Ready as I'll ever be." Bubba said.
"I can't wait!" Bobby squealed
"Let's do it!" Picky said as CatNap gave a thumbs-up.
With that, as they held on tightly to their new spouses, they turned to the audience. A few seconds later the orchestra had started playing.
[CraftyCorn]
Brightly dawns our wedding day;
[ALL]
Joyous hour, we give thee greeting!
Whither, whither art thou fleeting?
Fickle moment, prithee stay!
Fickle moment, prithee stay!
[DogDay and Bubba]
What though mortal joys be hollow?
[Hoppy and Picky]
Pleasures come, if sorrows follow.
[DogDay & Crafty/CatNap & Picky/Bubba & Bobby/Hoppy & Kickin]
Though the tocsin sound, ere long/Though the tocsin sound, ere long/Though the tocsin sound, ere long/Though the tocsin sound, ere long! Ding!
Though the tocsin sound, ere long/Ere long/Though the tocsin sound, ere long/Ding! Dong!
Though the tocsin sound, ere long/Though the tocsin sound, ere long/Though the tocsin sound, ere long/Dong! Ding!
[ALL]
Ding dong! Ding dong!
Yet until the shadows fall
Over one and over all
[Crafty]
Sing a merry madrigal
[ALL]
Sing a merry madrigal!
Sing a merry madrigal!
Fa la la la la, etc
During this part, Crafty clung closer to DogDay's arm, CatNap nuzzled his head against Picky's, Bobby rested her head against Bubba's chest, and Kickin and Hoppy's fingers tightened around the others'
[Bobby]
Let us dry the ready tear
[ALL]
Though the hours are surely creeping
Little need for woeful weeping
Till the sad sundown is near
Till the sad sundown is near
[Kickin and Catnap]
All must sip the cup of sorrow —
[Picky]
I to-day and thou to-morrow
[ALL]
What, though solemn shadows fall
Sooner, later, over all?
[DogDay & Crafty/CatNap & Picky/Bubba & Bobby/Hoppy & Kickin]
This the close of every song!/This the close of every song!/This the close of every song!/Though the tocsin sound, ere long! Ding!
This the close of every song!/Every song!/This the close of every song!/Ding! Dong!
This the close of every song!/This the close of every song!/This the close of every song!/Dong! Ding!
It's mostly the same, but this time, Kickin and Hoppy are competing over who can sing better, causing the other couples to shake their heads.
[ALL]
Ding! Dong!
What, though solemn shadows fall
Sooner, later, over all?
[CraftyCorn]
Sing a merry madrigal
[ALL]
Sing a merry madrigal!
Sing a merry madrigal!
Fa la la la la
Once they sang the final notes of the song, they all pulled in for a kiss. The crowd went wild, hollering and clapping for the newlyweds.
