A Sausage Roll

Summary:

It's the summer of 1939, and Sybbie wasn't expecting to run into Charlie again, but she did, and now it's time to catch up on the past year, but keeping the conversation light might be difficult.

Work Text:

Sibbie walked along the fair midway with Charlie, eyeing the stands for a good snack.  She hadn’t been expecting to see him at all this summer, and they hadn’t kept in touch after they parted ways the summer before.  But here he was.

“So how was your year in America?” he asked her as they walked along.

“Very busy,” she answered. “I didn’t go to a finishing school, you know.”

“I believe you,” he said. “You don’t strike me as the type who wants to be finished.”

Sybbie looked at him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I don’t know, a play on words, I guess?” he laughed. “I’m finished with university now, you know.  Maybe I’ll go to America.”

“It’s probably good timing,” Sybbie said seriously. “I just want to get back there and away from Europe right now.”

“Well, yes, I suppose that’s a good point,” Charlie replied solemnly.

“What do you plan to do?”

“I’m just helping my grandmother at home.  She rather dotes on me, you know.”

“I remember you told me about that,” Sybbie said. She looked over, and realized there was an empty table. “Why don’t we sit down now?”

“Yes, let’s change the subject and talk about food?”

They sat across from each other.

“What would you like?” he asked her.

“That place is selling sausage rolls,” Sybbie said.

“Will you be my conspirator, then?”  he said, getting up to walk to the stall. “I will eat one, too.”

“I suppose I have no choice,” she smirked.
