Work Text:

The scent of fresh flowers and chocolates lingered in the air, mixing with the faint laughter and chatter of students exchanging gifts this fourteenth of February. Pink and red banners adorned the ceilings, heart-shaped cutouts lined the lockers, and a few scattered balloons bobbed near the doors of classrooms, with everyone wearing either pink, red, or white to celebrate. It was quite a scene straight out of a romance film as the school seemed excited for the Heart’s Day event this afternoon, yet Beomgyu hardly paid it any mind as he made his way toward the student council office, wearing his boyfriend’s red hoodie and a pair of jeans with his headphones around his neck.

His arms were occupied with neatly stacked documents—the ones he had spent the entirety of last night reviewing and finalizing. He sighed, shifting his grip as he pushed open the door to the council office. A few early-arriving council members greeted him with bright smiles, giving them a tired wave and a faint smile before placing the paperwork neatly on his desk and reminding them for later’s event.

As he left the office, planning to grab the books he needed for his morning subject, Beomgyu walked through the decorated hallways, heading toward his locker. Whispers followed him from students who had never-ending compliments of his composure, greeting back those who bowed and wished him a good morning.

He reached his locker and spun the combination lock and was about to open its door until he heard a familiar voice that curled up the corner of his lips.

“Good morning, president,” came Yeonjun’s voice from behind him and caught Beomgyu’s attention, now facing him—the popular varsity player, a well-known starboy—approaching him. Despite today’s holiday dress code, he was wearing his uniform instead, slightly undone with his tie loosened just enough to look casual but still put together, looking effortlessly cool as always. His jet-black hair was slightly tousled, strands falling over his forehead in a way that made him look unfairly attractive, and his smile—genuine, teasing, and warm—was the kind that could make anyone’s heart stutter, especially Beomgyu’s who, for a second, almost forgot that they weren’t the only people in this hall.

Beomgyu barely had time to greet him back before a bouquet was revealed in between Yeonjun and him, the scent of white tulips and red poppies hitting him instantly. His eyes widened, “What the— Yeonjun?! What is this?”

Yeonjun grinned, handing the flowers to Beomgyu, “It’s called a Valentine’s Day gift, baby. Haven’t heard of it?” he said, teasingly. Beomgyu rolled his eyes, unable to fight the small smile forming on his lips, “I meant, why so early? Heart’s day is later, and weren’t you very exhausted last night? I even thought you’d be late today,” Yeonjun leaned in slightly, voice lowering into a whisper, “Let’s say that, no matter how tired I was, I had to make sure I was the first person to give you flowers this morning,” Yeonjun protested, “Imagine if someone else had beaten me to it—I’d never let that slide,” the other raised an eyebrow, “Right, because apparently, I have an army of admirers waiting for their turn to date me even though that’s not true.”

He crossed his arms, feigning seriousness before replying to Beomgyu, “You do, and I’m here to remind everyone that you’re taken by me,” the other let out a small laugh, shaking his head as he adjusted his grip on the bouquet, “I’m actually surprised you’re this wide awake. You called me last night ranting about practice, but barely able to form words because you kept falling asleep mid-sentence,” Yeonjun groaned, throwing his head back dramatically, “Ugh, don’t remind me. It was brutal! I was this close to passing out while talking to you, but I couldn’t even complain properly because every time I tried, I fell asleep mid-rant. This practice isn’t letting me have some time with my wife,” Beomgyu smirked, “You did. And you sulked every time you woke up, whining about how I wasn’t cuddling you through the phone,” Yeonjun sighed loudly, eyes closing shut with his lips forming into a slight pout, “Don’t expose me like that, I’m trying my best,” Beomgyu chuckled, “Well, can’t deny that you were really adorable, anyway.”

“And you love me for that,” Yeonjun shot back, nudging Beomgyu’s side with his elbow, his grin widening, “Not just that, but everything about you,” Beomgyu responded, leaving the other flushed and could only giggle out of fondness.

While Beomgyu began to remind Yeonjun that he should take his textbooks for later’s class, something slipped from the top shelf of his locker, fluttering to the ground between him, by the moment he opened it—a single red rose.

“Oh?” Yeonjun hummed, bending down to pick it up, “What’s this?”

Beomgyu shrugged, “I don’t know, possibly from one of the councils,” he mentioned, “We always leave each other’s lockers some gifts during Heart’s Day, it’s not just for couples, you know?”

Yeonjun’s curiosity got the better of him despite the information as he peeked inside Beomgyu’s locker. His eyes widened as he took in the sight: dozens of neatly arranged Valentine’s gifts—heart-shaped chocolates, small stuffed toys, and an assortment of colorful envelopes stacked inside, “Woah, the council gave you all of these?” Beomgyu hummed, “Yeah. Like 90% of them?”

"90%?" Yeonjun repeated out of surprise, “Then from whom are the rest?” frantically grabbing one of the envelopes, he flipped it open out of curiosity. His jaw then clenched as he read the words inside.

Choi Beomgyu, I’ve admired you for so long since our freshman years, would you consider going on a date with me later?

Yeonjun exhaled sharply, his usual playful expression shifting into something darker as he read the name engraved on the note, “Soohyun? I don’t recall a council member with that name. Do people seriously not know that you’re already taken or are they being ignorant?” he began to rant, hinting possessiveness in his tone, “I mean, do I have to make a lot of public announcements? Was my love posting on my SMS about you not enough?” his grip on the letter tightened as he huffed, “This is ridiculous.”

Beomgyu bit his lip to keep himself from laughing, but his boyfriend’s jealousy was quite adorable and impossible to ignore. He reached up, cupping Yeonjun’s cheeks with both hands, tilting his face toward him, “Jun, baby, relax. You know I’m yours. No one else’s,” the other narrowed his eyes and pouted, “I don’t like the idea of people thinking they have a chance with you.”

“And they don’t,” Beomgyu assured, pressing a quick kiss to Yeonjun’s lips, earning a few muffled giggles from students passing by and from himself. Just as Yeonjun was about to say something else, he was taken aback by the sudden kiss, flustered as his ears began to turn red.

In defeat, he chuckled along with his lover before he turned to his own locker and opened it to get his book. Immediately, a waterfall of colorful envelopes and letters exploded from inside, cascading to the floor in an overwhelming heap. Beomgyu’s eyes widened in amusement while Yeonjun stared blankly at the mess before groaning, dragging a hand down his face, “You have got to be kidding me.”

The other nudged him playfully, grinning mischievously, “Maybe I should be the jealous one. Looks like I have a lot of competition,” Yeonjun let out a dramatic sigh before kicking at the pile half-heartedly, “I’m throwing these away once Wooyoung is here, he can have all of these.”

Beomgyu chuckled, stepping closer to loop his arms around Yeonjun’s neck, “Now, now, you don’t need to throw them away. People put effort into writing those, you know,” he advised, “You can just keep it somewhere at your place, I’m not mad about it anyway,” Yeonjun pouted, leaning in slightly, “But I don’t want to disrespect my wife,” he began laughing, slightly pushing Yeonjun, “Stop calling me that in public, Junnie!” the other smiled, pulling Beomgyu even closer to him, “What? You are my wife. Plus, everyone must know you’re mine, so I’ll start calling you that loudly for them to hear.”

As Yeonjun leaned in for another kiss, Beomgyu found himself smiling in between, immediately pushing him farther away in a tease while reminding him that they’re in school, only for laughter from both of them followed. The morning rush continued, with students chatting from left to right and teasing their friends, as Beomgyu thought to himself that there is no one else he’d rather spend the day with than the dramatic, hopeless romantic who’s now wrapped around him and spoiling him with forehead kisses. Helping him out, they both picked up all the cards and placed them back at Yeonjun’s locker along with the bouquet on Beomgyu’s, taking their textbooks before heading to the classroom. Yeonjun insisted on carrying Beomgyu’s books as his other palm freely held his boyfriend’s hand next to it, smiling to each other as their friends greeted them both before the class started.
