The sun broke through the blinds as a pale orange glow lit up the room.
Fingertips trailed delicately over Lucas’ forearm and he smiled softly to himself in the morning sun.
“What time is it?” Dillon murmured, his nose nuzzled the nape of Lucas’ neck causing the small hairs there to rise.
Lucas peaked one eye open and squinted to look at the alarm clock that was perched on his bedside table. The blur of light outlined the number five. He quickly shut his eyes again to mainly avoid the sting from the burning sunlight but to also go back to sleep as Lucas had no intention of waking up at a time that had the number five as the hour.
Dillon nudged his nose further into the crook between Lucas’ shoulder and neck and then pressed his lip there a couple times. Warmth flooded his chest as Lucas’ heart fluttered with delight. He adored these sleepy morning moments.
“Lucas, the time?” Dillon grumbled, tightening his arms around Lucas’ slender waist.
The curly haired boy drifted his hands down to Dillon’s and caressed them softly. “Not the kind of time we should be waking up at.”
“It’s twelve o’clock, isn’t it?” Dillon huskily breathed out, his deep morning voice lighting a wildfire in Lucas’ heart.
Lucas lightly kicked Dillon’s leg and he let out a grunt. “Shut it, you.”
His boyfriend snickered sleepily, his chuckles muffled against Lucas’ neck. “Make me.”
Untangling his legs from in between Dillon’s, he kicked them both over his waist and climbed onto his chest. He pressed his hands against Dillon’s lips and bit down on his lower lip to muffle his laughter. “How’s that for shutting you up?”
Dillon mumbled against his hands so Lucas leaned down to his eye level and said, “Sorry? What was that? I couldn’t quite hear you.”
Rolling his eyes, Dillon grabbed onto Lucas’ waist and began to tickle him. It startled him so much that he fell sideways onto the bed, letting out uncontrollable giggles as he went down.
Dillon grinned at the way his disarmed boyfriend flopped back onto the bed with loud bursts of laughter. Enjoying the perfect sound, his fingers continued their attack. And with a cheeky smile that lit up his entire face, Dillon’s fingers slipped lower onto his waist.
In a few quick seconds, Lucas soon went from a bubbly mess to a frozen statue. His breath hitched as he looked down to find his grey t-shirt had risen amongst the ticklish chaos and Dillon’s fingers were pressing into the exposed bare skin there.
“Not so cocky now, are you?” Dillon breathed out, stroking his skin with his thumb. “What I was trying to say was...I didn’t quite mean for you to shut me up in that kinda way.”
Dillon then fluttered his eyelashes as Lucas leaned his head forward and rose his eyebrow in amusement. “Oh yeah? So what did you have in mind?”
His boyfriend brought his face closer to Lucas’ and lowered his heated gaze to the plumped lips that were currently wavering teasingly in the dim light. One hand grazed over the soft skin of his cheek and his thumb gently brushed Lucas’ lower lip. “This.”
And with that, he mashed his own lips against his lover's trembling ones and they both melted into the kiss. Their lips melded perfectly together like two missing jigsaw pieces slotting into place. The tips of Lucas’ ears flushed red as the kiss deepened and their breaths soon became hurried and needy.
Before things got too heated, they pulled away, their faces staying within centimetres of each other so much so that they could feel every single breath taken between the both of them.
“Did I ever tell you that I love you?” Dillon breathed out in a raspy tone, pecking the side of his mouth teasingly.
Lucas pretended to think about it for a second. “Hmm, maybe. Possibly. I might need reminding though...”
His boyfriend threw his head back and chuckled, “So that amazing kiss we just shared wasn’t enough?”
The curly haired boy shrugged his shoulders and pouted his lips. “I can’t quite recall...”
Dillon let out a theatrical sigh and then smiled at him widely before planting a quick kiss on Lucas’ pouted lips. Tilting his head upwards, Lucas went to deepen the kiss, but Dillon pulled away before he could, and he ended up chasing his lips.
Lucas let out a quiet whine and then hit his head back against the pillow in a huff.
Dillon pecked his forehead lightly and then climbed out the bed. “Come on, I’m starving, let’s eat something before I die.”
“You’ll be lucky if the hunger gets to you before I do,” Lucas grumbled out as he reached for the pillow behind his head and went to lob it at his cheeky other half.
In predicting Lucas’ next actions, the dark-haired teen shrieked, threw his hands up in surrender and rushed out the room before his boyfriend could whack him with the cushion.
The delicious smell of scrambled egg and fried bacon filled the air. Dillon was making the coffee with his brand-new fancy cafetiere whilst Lucas was flipping the bacon over in the frying pan.
“You know-“
“Don’t say it,” Lucas jumped in, interrupting Dillon’s usual appreciative morning speech.
Strong arms suddenly encircled his waist, causing Lucas to drop the fork in his hand with a yelp.
“You know, I absolutely love these early mornings. Just you and me, together. You cooking up breakfast. Me making coffee,” Dillon softly murmured as he hugged him from behind. “I couldn’t think of any other way to start my day off right.”
Lucas smiled to himself and dipped his head as his cheeks became a dark shade of pink.
Dillon watched his boyfriend flush red and he smirked to himself. He then popped his head closer to Lucas’ and sniffed the air. “Because as you know, bacon and eggs have always been my favourite food to eat first thing in the morning...”
With a now dropped smile and a glare that could cut deep, Lucas turned around to Dillon and shoved him off his back. “And because of that you’re sleeping on the sofa.”
“Oh, what? Hold on, babe, you know I was only kidding right. Of course obviously I meant you...” Dillon quickly said, grabbing onto Lucas’ hand.
Folding his arms across his chest, he acknowledged what he said with a raised eyebrow and then nodded. “Alright that’s cute of-“
“...and the breakfast isn’t all that bad either though,” Dillon added in with a mumble.
That earned him a stern look from Lucas.
His boyfriend grinned cheekily at his deadpanned expression and then ruffled his bed hair. “You’re adorable when you’re mad.”
“I already knew that from you chasing me around for a whole year while I pushed you away,” Lucas said in amusement, shaking his head full of curls as he then started turning the electric hob off.
“Ok, you got me there...” Dillon drawled as he walked around the kitchen island and leaned up against it with his hands. “I was a bit of a persistent one, weren’t I?” He rubbed the back of his neck with a sheepish look crossing his face.
Lucas stopped what he was doing and twisted around to gaze over at Dillon across the island. “But it was worth it.”
All traces of amusement was gone and his eyes shone with a new meaning altogether. Heavy emotion swirled in his blue eyes as he just stood and stared into the love of his life’s beautifully warm ones. His appreciation for Dillon and his efforts back then was something that he couldn’t put into words.
He had saved him.
If Dillon hadn’t woken up when he did and battled through the pain of his bruises and broken ribs to get help, Lucas wouldn’t have made it to see another day. He wouldn’t have been standing in a home filled with love and joy, if it weren’t for his adoring best friend turned life partner. His forever person.
Dillon held his gaze and followed Lucas’ movements as he made his way around the island towards him.
Lucas then wrapped his arms around Dillon tightly and squeezed. “I love you. So much.”
“I love you too, beautiful,” Dillon declared sweetly, cuddling him close to his chest and placing an affectionate kiss on the crown of his head.
It was later in the day now and they had just finished up their last round of FIFA on their Xbox console. Lucas laid with his head on Dillon’s shoulder whilst Dillon switched over the TV and scrolled through Netflix.
Although it had been a simple and laid-back day for the both of them, Dillon cherished every moment he spent with Lucas. Even times like now where the happy couple were curled up on the sofa, all nice and cosy under a blanket.
They had won. Won against Carter and against the battle in their own heads. They deserved these moments of peace.
“You’re safe now,” Dillon whispered to a fast asleep Lucas, gently pulling him into him. “Never am I letting you go.”
He then smiled at the peacefulness across Lucas’ face. His boy could finally relax.
Dillon couldn’t believe that this was his life. That he got to wake up to his soulmate and bask in the love and joy in which this beautiful boy gave to him.
They say after every storm a rainbow appears.
And what a beautiful rainbow it was, Dillon thought to himself as he stared down at Lucas who was tucked all snug against his chest.
He was the kind of rainbow that stopped you in your tracks and had you staring up at it in complete awe. The one that made you appreciate waking up to see another day.
And Dillon couldn’t have been more grateful for the colourful light in his life that was Lucas Hay
