Work Text:
Warm emotions filled Golden Osmanthus Cookie as she kept rereading the letter. She hadn’t been able to take her eyes off it ever since she found it outside her perfumery’s door.
It was a letter from Camellia Cookie. A letter inviting her to spend the day with him.
The letter read as follows:
Dear Golden Osmanthus Cookie,
Hello my dear friend. I know this is very sudden, but I thought I’d share some good news with you.
As you know, I am a very busy Cookie, with all the trade reports and business ledgers I have to review and manage. But occasionally, thanks to all my hard work, I am able to earn myself days off where I am free to do whatever I want at my leisure.
As you can guess, today just so happens to be one of those days. However, I have come to the realization that such a nice day should be shared, therefore I have made the decision to spend this day with someone.
And I want that someone to be you.
I do have a couple stops to make throughout the day, but if you don’t mind accompanying me to those I would really appreciate having you by my side. Once all that is taken care of we can spend the remainder of the day however you wish.
The choice is up to you of course, if you accept, I shall wait for you at my Teahouse.
Either way, I hope you have a lovely day.
Sincerely yours,
Camellia Cookie~
Golden Osmanthus Cookie had reread the letter five times now and she still couldn’t believe it was real.
Camellia Cookie really wanted to spend the day with her?
Why? Not that she didn’t want to, she always enjoyed spending time with one of the most important Cookies in her life, the idea of having a full day together with him almost sounded like a fantasy trance her fragrances would sometimes put Cookies under.
But why did he want to spend the day with her specifically? He could’ve chosen to spend time with someone like Cobalt Cookie, or any member of his caravan. Why did he choose her?
This question really made Golden Osmanthus Cookie think, perhaps there was a personal reason behind it? Did he maybe want to spend time with her because…
No, it couldn’t be! Surely she was just getting her hopes up.
…Then again, she remembered that night.
That night he accompanied her back to her perfumery.
She remembered what he said.
“Don’t be so harsh on yourself! Clearly there’s no one else as important to the Flower City as you.”
“…And to myself as well.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie blushed while recalling that memory. Did he really mean it back then?
Was he trying to say that he…
The blush on Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s cheeks grew, her face felt almost as hot as the oven. She brought out some of her incense burners to calm her down, if she was going out to meet with Camellia Cookie, she couldn’t act like this!
And she had indeed decided, she would go out and spend the day with him, as he wished.
Quickly brushing her hair, checking all her fragrances and perfumes, and making sure her sunlight colored clothes were neat and tidy, Golden Osmanthus Cookie made sure she was ready to go see him. Once she was all done, she made her way out the door.
She didn’t make it very far before a certain little sister over hers showed up.
“Hey sister!!!!!!” Red Osmanthus Cookie exclaimed as she bounded over to her older sister.
“Oh! Red Osmanthus Cookie! Um, hi, nice to see you.”
“Whatcha up to?” Red Osmanthus Cookie asked her big sister “You gonna finally come over to the Mansion? Ooh, or are you coming to my pipa recital today?”
“Aw I would love to see you play again, but I was at your recital from yesterday, remember?” Golden Osmanthus Cookie reminded her “I was so proud of you. Your music was fantastic, I know you’ll do just as great today.”
Red Osmanthus Cookie looked disappointed. “Aww, but it would be great if you came to all of my recitals though! What are you planning on doing today then? Are you getting ingredients for new perfumes or something?”
“No, nothing like that. I’m just on my way to see… an old friend.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie tried to be a bit subtle about who she was referring to, but her sister was quick to figure it out.
“Wait… you’re going to go see that old and musty Cookie, aren’t you?! Ugh! You’d really rather spend time with him than your own sister?!”
“Red Osmanthus Cookie, it’s not like that.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie affirmed to her sister “Your music and your company is very important to me. But Camellia Cookie is also very important to me, I’m just paying him a quick visit.”
“Hmmmm.” Red Osmanthus Cookie’s face scrunched up.
“It’s alright sister, I promise. We’re just going to spend a bit of time together, nothing else”
“Hmmmmmm, ugh, okay fine!” Red Osmanthus Cookie groaned “But if that musty Cookie does anything to you, I’ll purposefully spill tea all over his clothes!”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie smiled softly and shook her head. “Nothing’s gonna happen sis, we’re just visiting with each other.”
At least, Golden Osmanthus Cookie presumed nothing would happen today, but a part of her did wonder if maybe Camellia Cookie had something planned for her. That was probably just wishful thinking though, it was more likely he just wanted to spend time with friends.
If that was the case, maybe she could invite her sister.
“Here, if you’re really so worried, why don’t you accompany me to the teahouse? I think Camellia Cookie might be happy to see you.” she offered.
“Hm, I doubt that! But even if he would be, I have to go get ready for my recital anyway. So I’ll have to pass. You be careful out there though! Got it?”
“Okay, I’ve got it. I hope your recital goes well today then. I promise, the next time you have a recital, I will be one of the first Cookies to come to it.”
That promise did bring a smile to Red Osmanthus Cookie’s face. “Yay! I would really appreciate that!”
“Alright then.” Gold Osmanthus Cookie nodded, offering her sister a small hug, which she accepted.
Pulling away from the hug, Red Osmanthus Cookie held up her pipa. “I’d better get going! I’ve got to do some rehearsal before the recital starts! I’ll see you tomorrow sis!”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie waved at her little sister as she ran off to go to rehearsal. “See you tomorrow. Take care.”
Once her sister was gone, Golden Osmanthus Cookie let out a soft sigh and resumed making her way towards Camellia Cookie’s Teahouse.
“I really hope that one day, Red Osmanthus Cookie can learn to get along with Camellia Cookie.” she said to herself “Especially if these emotions and desires I feel for him are what I think they are…”
She knew what these feelings likely were, and what they could mean. But she refrained from admitting them to anyone, including herself.
Mostly due to some self doubt she still felt about herself and her usefulness, but also because she was admittedly afraid.
What if she was wrong in thinking Camellia Cookie did feel the same way she felt about him? It might hurt their friendship, and she didn’t want to lose a Cookie who was so important to her…
Golden Osmanthus Cookie had been so preoccupied by these thoughts, that she didn’t even realize she had reached the Teahouse and was now standing right before its entrance.
“Oh.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie blinked, bringing herself back to reality as she knocked on the door to the Teahouse. A few seconds later, Iced Tea Cookie answered the door.
“Hello, I am sorry we are clo- Ah, Golden Osmanthus Cookie! Welcome!”
“Hi, I got a letter from Camellia Cookie, is he here?”
“Golden Osmanthus Cookie?”
The perfumer’s heart fluttered. Camellia Cookie was standing right next to Iced Tea Cookie, having wanted to see who was at the door. He now stood at the doorway, looking right at Golden Osmanthus Cookie with those beautiful bright seafoam colored eyes of his, his golden monocle shining in the sunlight.
“Oh! Camellia Cookie!” Golden Osmanthus Cookie blinked.
“Golden Osmanthus Cookie! You made it!” he smiled, stepping out of the doorway to greet his old friend properly.
The perfumer smiled back at him. “I received your letter, you really want to spend the day with me?”
“Of course, you are one of the most important Cookies in my life after all.” Camellia Cookie affirmed, his cheeks looking slightly rosey.
Golden Osmanthus Cookie blushed back, she tried to hide it with her hand, yet it was still somewhat noticeable. Iced Tea Cookie watched all this with a smile on his face.
“As I mentioned in the letter, I do have two stops to make in the Flower City, but once those are all done we’re free to spend the rest of the day however you’d wish.” Camellia Cookie explained, offering a hand to Golden Osmanthus Cookie “Would you like to accompany me? Golden Osmanthus Cookie?”
Her face shining with joy, Golden Osmanthus Cookie took his hand. “I would love to, Camellia Cookie.”
Thus, the two Cookies left the Teahouse together, and made their way further into the Flower City.
On their way to Camellia Cookie’s first stop he had to make, the two Cookies began conversing with each other.
“So, enjoying your free day so far?” Golden Osmanthus Cookie asked Camellia Cookie.
“I have, thank you for asking. This morning I was able to finish a special painting I’ve been working on.”
“Ooh really? What did you paint? A new map?”
“Heh, no, I’ve been painting a lot of those lately.” Camellia Cookie mentioned “This painting’s a little more… creative.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie tilted her head, unsure of what he meant by that.
“Here, I’ll show you it when we get back to the Tea House.”
“Aw, that would be nice. Thank you.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie smiled.
Camellia Cookie nodded. “You’re welcome. Speaking of my Teahouse though, when we’re all done out here, what would you like to do when we get back?”
The perfumer put her hand to her chin as her smile grew. She had just the thing in mind.
“How about… we have a cup of tea together? The kind of tea with the exquisite flavor and pleasant scent?”
“Ah, the one exclusively for my most esteemed guests?” Camellia Cookie grinned “Very well. When we return, I shall prepare it for you, as you wish.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie grinned back, her blush starting to show. “Thank you, I can’t wait.”
The two soon arrived at Camellia Cookie’s first stop, that being the Rich Merchant Cookie’s shop.
“Thank you for shopping! You are now 9,999,992 purchases away from reaching the VIP status!” Rich Merchant Cookie told his current customer.
“Aw dear…” the pink haired customer grimaced as he took his purchase and left.
Rich Merchant Cookie waved as the customer left. “Come again!” he said, soon noticing Camellia Cookie and Golden Osmanthus Cookie.
“Ah, Camellia Cookie! Welcome! Ooh I see you have Golden Osmanthus Cookie with you. How nice! What can I do for the two of you?”
“Hello, I am here to pick up the purchase I made.” Camellia Cookie told the merchant “Has it arrived?”
“Yes! I received the shipment for it just this morning!” Rich Merchant Cookie confirmed, kneeling down behind the counter to pick up a small tray and set it on top of the counter “You’re lucky your messenger pigeons were able to find out I would have these in stock! Otherwise you might have missed out!”
The items Camellia Cookie had purchased were three bottles of somewhat expensive looking ink, all being held together in a nice tray. The ink looked slightly familiar to Golden Osmanthus Cookie, and soon she realized why.
“Hey, I recognize this type of ink.” she said to Camellia Cookie “This is the same ink you used back in academy we went together.”
“Ah, you remember that?”
“Of course I do, you made such beautiful paintings with it.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie recalled, remembering the time when they were both children, attending the academy together.
“Heh, I used to use up so much ink back then, my drawings used to be so messy.”
“But they were still lovely to see, and you improved the more you practiced!”
Camellia Cookie looked at her softly. “Well, I wouldn’t have improved without your encouragement.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie hummed, reminiscing more on her and Camellia Cookie’s childhoods.
One memory that was dear to her was that time he made a drawing of her, but felt embarrassed as he thought his drawing of her was messy and didn’t look right.
But she absolutely loved the drawing and thanked him greatly for it. To this day, it was still one of her favorite drawings done by him. Evident by the fact that she still had it at her perfumery.
Camellia Cookie continued to smile at her, then looked down at the ink. “This specific type of ink has become somewhat of a rarity in the Flower City, so when my messenger pigeons informed me it would be in stock, I couldn’t help but purchase it.”
“Mm, were you feeling nostalgic perhaps?”
Camellia Cookie chuckled. “Perhaps I was.”
Turning over to the merchant, Camellia Cookie brought out a bag of coins and handed it over to him. “I believe this should cover the cost of my purchase, correct?”
Opening the bag up, Rich Merchant Cookie quickly counted the amount of coins that were inside. Once he was done, he looked surprised.
“Oh my! Camellia Cookie! This is way more coins than these things cost! You don’t need to spend so much!”
“Nonsense, with how rare this type of ink is becoming, and with how much it means to me, I’d say this amount is worth it.” the calligrapher affirmed “Take it, I insist.”
Rich Merchant Cookie looked down at the bag of coins again, and grinned widely. “Well thank you very much then!” he exclaimed, bringing out a little floral shopping bag for Camellia Cookie to carry the ink bottles in. “I hope you and Golden Osmanthus Cookie have a wonderful rest of your day!”
“Thank you, I hope you have a nice day too.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie told him.
“Yes, have a nice day, sir.” Camellia Cookie nodded, taking the shopping bag from him and setting the ink bottles inside.
“Thank you so much for… oh?”
Camellia Cookie looked into the shopping bag, appearing to be puzzled by something.
Golden Osmanthus Cookie was confused. “What is it?”
Reaching into the shopping bag, Camellia Cookie pulled out something that Golden Osmanthus Cookie hadn’t been expecting to see.
A purple rose.
He set the little flower on top of the counter. “Excuse me, I did not purchase this. Did you put it in my bag by mistake?”
Rich Merchant Cookie looked at the rose. “Oh, how’d that get in there? Hm. Well I can take it back if you want…”
“Wait.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie spoke up before Camellia Cookie could decide “Actually… can I have it? Purple roses are really hard to find in the wild, and they have such a wonderful scent. I could use it to make some new fragrances.”
“Really?” Camellia Cookie smiled, picking the flower back up “In that case, I’ll buy it for you. How much?”
“Oh! Camellia Cookie, you don’t have to do that for me! You’ve already spent so much, I can purchase this myself!”
“It’s quite alright, I’ve got more than enough money on me. Consider it my gift to you.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s face flushed. “C-Camellia Cookie...”
“So, how much for the purple rose?” he asked the merchant once again.
“Here, since you were so generous with how much you spent on the ink, consider it already paid for!” Rich Merchant Cookie told him.
“Oh, why thank you sir! That is very kind of you.”
Newly purchased flower in hand, Camellia Cookie turned back to Golden Osmanthus Cookie and presented it to her.
“For you then, Golden Osmanthus Cookie. One purple rose.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie tried to refrain herself from blushing too much, but it was too hard. Despite that, she gratefully accepted the flower.
“Thank you Camellia Cookie, thank you so much.”
Together, the two of them said goodbye to Rich Merchant Cookie, and made their way back into the city.
As they walked towards their next destination, Golden Osmanthus Cookie kept analyzing and smelling the purple rose.
“This was such a fortunate find.” she said as she held up the flower, its purple petals looking vibrant in the sunlight “With this, I can create new incense to help keep the city safe.”
“That would be great.” Camellia Cookie agreed “I’m glad I was able to purchase it for you.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie blushed, but not as hard as she had been when she received the purple rose. “So, where’s our next stop?”
“It’s not far, and it’s the only other stop I have to make before we can head back to the Teahouse.”
“Great. Where are we headed then?”
“The old public library, I’ve been informed that it has acquired some new scrolls that contain some fascinating knowledge and I thought I’d go and browse.”
“Aw it’s been awhile since I’ve been to the library.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie mentioned “I know Red Osmanthus Cookie likes to go there a lot to see Laughing Tea’s work.”
Camellia Cookie smirked. “Hm, Laughing Tea sounds like quite the artist.”
Arriving at the library, the two made their way inside and started looking through the various shelves of scrolls.
The library held a vast selection of scrolls to choose from, yet none of them seemed to be what Camellia Cookie was looking for.
“Read that one, read that one, read that one, read that one, hmm have I… yes I have read that one. Read that one, read that one…”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie was looking through the selection of scrolls to try and help, yet she couldn’t help but watch as Camellia Cookie casually went through them all so quickly.
(Wow, Camellia Cookie had read a lot of scrolls.) she thought (Wait, what am I saying?? Of course he has! There’s no other Cookie I know who loves knowledge as much as he does.)
She couldn’t help but smile as she thought about this. (It’s one of the many traits I love about him.)
The two kept looking through all the shelves to try and find the right scrolls, not paying any attention to their surroundings. Which became apparent when they didn’t notice the librarian walk up to them.
“Camellia Cookie! A pleasure seeing you here.”
Camellia Cookie looked away from the shelves to face the librarian. “Ah, hello. Good to see you to. My friend and I were looking for your newest selection of scrolls.”
The librarian- who was a rather elderly looking Cookie with light brown dough and blue robes- looked at the two Cookies. “Ahh so you’ve heard. We’ll, you were informed somewhat correctly, we do have something new to our collection, but it is only one scroll I’m afraid.”
“Only one?” Golden Osmanthus Cookie questioned.
“Only one.” the librarian repeated “However that one scroll just so happens to be quite valuable, as it contains many legends and lore about the age of dragons.”
Camellia Cookie oohed. “Where can I find this scroll?”
“As a matter of fact, I have it right here.” the librarian revealed, pulling the scroll out from one of the pockets on her robe.
“Ah.” Camellia Cookie’s eyes sparkled as he studied the scroll’s appearance. Its backside was colored a pleasant shade of vermilion, with its edges being rimmed with gold.
Placed on top of it, Golden Osmanthus Cookie had noticed, was a pink peony. She wondered if it was part of the scroll, or if it was just there for decoration purposes.
Camellia Cookie kept gazing at the scroll, then turned his attention back to the librarian. “I would very much like to rent this scroll, if you’d please.”
“Certainly, I’d be happy to rent it to you.” the librarian told him, a smirk growing on her wrinkly face “However, such a valuable scroll should be worth something in return.”
“Hm? What would you like?”
“I think… since this scroll contains valuable stories regarding the dragons, how about you tell me a story in return?”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie stared in bewilderment, did this librarian not know who she was talking to??
But Camellia Cookie didn’t seem to mind. “That sounds fine to me. What kind of story would you like to hear?”
“Whatever story you want to share, it can be fiction or nonfiction, it’s entirely up to you.” the librarian said.
“Mm, in that case I have just the story.” Camellia Cookie decided.
The librarian pulled over a nearby stool and sat down on it. “Then by all means, do tell it.”
Before sharing the story, Camellia Cookie looked at Golden Osmanthus Cookie. “Would you like to hear it too, Golden Osmanthus Cookie?”
“I would love to.” the perfumer agreed, finding her own stool to sit down on so she could be comfortable while listening to Camellia Cookie tell his story.
With two sets of eyes watching him, Camellia Cookie cleared his throat and began telling his story.
“Long ago, in a faraway kingdom high up in the mountains, there was a young painter who was known far and wide for his craft. He had a special talent for not only producing stunning works of art on time, but also managing to make the paintings so accurate to their subjects. No matter who requested art from him, or how challenging the subject was, he would always manage to complete his paintings for them.”
“For many years, he kept this streak of getting his artworks done on time, until one day, when a peculiar customer came to see him. This customer was a newcomer to the kingdom who heard about his craft and came from a long distance to see if he could create a painting for her. She approached the painter, telling him that she was a songstress who had lost her passion for singing and had been journeying across Earthbread in search of something that could restore it. Thus, she requested the painter to paint her a self portrait, hoping that it would be the thing that would finally bring back her inspiration. The painter was happy to have another customer, but not just for the sake of the job. This woman was the most beautiful Cookie he had ever seen. All the pretty waterfalls, gardens, and sunsets he had painted over the years paled in comparison, for she was more beautiful than all of them combined. He had to make her a painting that did her justice.”
“Promising to get the painting done the next day, the painter sent the grateful songstress away and got to work. He worked long into the night, making sure he had got every detail about her right. When he was finally done, he looked at his painting and was appalled. This pathetic excuse for a masterpiece didn’t even capture a fraction of her beauty! The songstress deserved so much more than this! Therefore he painted over this unsatisfactory painting and tried again, only for the second attempt to look even worse! He tried again and again, but each attempt only resulted in failure in his eyes. By the time he finally finished an attempt he felt was at least decent, the sun had risen high into the sky and the songstress had arrived to see the result. When he went out to greet her, he begged for her forgiveness. The painting was done, but he could not capture how beautiful she was with a mere painting, and thus asked for her forgiveness for such a poor performance.”
“The songstress simply smiled, telling the painter that she was flattered he thought so highly of her appearance, but she didn’t care if the painting was super accurate. She just wanted her own portrait, and would be fine with however it turned out. Having been reassured by the songstress, the painter brought out the painting and showed it to her. To his surprise, the songstress absolutely loved it, to the point where she started to sing out of joy. Out of gratitude, the songstress hugged the painter, thanking him for bringing back her singing voice. The painter was confused, asking her how could such a simple piece could have inspired her so? She told him that while the painting may not accurately depict her appearance, he had done such a wonderful job in depicting her personality and spirit, and all the effort and care that went into making the painting filled her with such inspiration. In response, the artist took her hand and told her that her voice and beauty filled him with the same amount of inspiration, and asked her if he could keep making paintings for her. The songstress agreed, promising him that she would sing more songs for him in return. Years later, the artist had retired from his service of making paintings for paying customers, but he still made paintings for his beloved songstress. Paintings that could never fully depict her beauty, but depicted her spirit and emotions greatly. And for the songstress, that was enough.”
Camellia Cookie took a breath after finishing his story, it had been longer than he thought, but he still enjoyed sharing it. Opening his eyes he saw that Golden Osmanthus Cookie was clapping for him, and the librarian seemed satisfied.
“What a nice story.” she smiled, handing him the scroll “I believe you earned this.”
Pleased, Camellia Cookie took the scroll from her. “Thank you.”
“Camellia Cookie! That was such a nice story!” Golden Osmanthus Cookie complimented “Did you write that? It was so good!”
“I’m glad you liked it.” Camellia Cookie thanked her “It’s one that I had been working on for quite some time now.”
“I think it turned out great.”
“I do too.” the librarian agreed with Golden Osmanthus Cookie “I do have to ask, where’d you get the idea for that story?”
“Oh, I was inspired by a few tales I’ve heard.” Camellia Cookie explained, a blush slowly growing on his face as he brought his hand to his lips “…And perhaps a few of my own experiences.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie tilted her head. What did Camellia Cookie mean by that?
“How nice.” the librarian spoke up, interrupting Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s thoughts “Well I hope you enjoy the scroll. Take good care of it.”
“I will.” Camellia Cookie assured her “Thanks again for giving it to me.”
“You’re welcome. Oh, and one more thing. See that pink peony attached to it?”
Camellia Cookie brought up the scroll and looked at the flower stuck to it. “Ah yes, I was wondering about that. Is it part of the scroll?”
“No, the Cookie that ships new scrolls to us sometimes puts pretty little flowers on them as a little treat for the library. You can do whatever you want with it, we won’t mind.”
Given that information, Golden Osmanthus Cookie stepped forward.
“Um in that case, can I have it, Camellia Cookie? I’ve been needing a peony flower for another batch of perfumes I’ve been working on. This’ll save me some time in having to go and find one.”
Camellia Cookie looked at her with a sincere smile. “Of course, here.”
Gently, he removed the pink peony from the scroll. Once it was free he handed it to Golden Osmanthus Cookie.
Face beaming with gratitude, Golden Osmanthus Cookie took the flower and held it in the same hand that held the purple rose.
“Thank you Camellia Cookie!”
The librarian yawned. “If that’s all sorted out, then I’ll be returning to my work with sorting the scrolls, thank you very much.”
“Very well, have a pleasant rest of your day.” Camellia Cookie thanked her, putting the scroll in the shopping bag with his ink bottles “Shall we get going then, Golden Osmanthus Cookie?”
“Yes, let’s head on out.” she agreed, following Camellia Cookie out of the library.
Before leaving, Golden Osmanthus Cookie looked down at the two flowers she held. Her face delighted as she did so.
(Between this pink peony and the purple rose, I’m having a lot of luck in finding flowers today!) she thought happily, before her expression changed slightly.
The more she thought about this… the more she realized something.
It was rather convenient that in the two places she and Camellia Cookie happened to go to, both just so happened to have stray flowers at them. And pretty valuable ones at that.
She was probably overthinking things, but a part of her couldn’t help but feel somewhat suspicious.
Leaving the library, Golden Osmanthus Cookie noticed Camellia Cookie quickly glance at the grandfather clock the library had to check the time. It was around 2:30 in the afternoon, meaning they still had plenty of time within the day to do whatever they wanted.
“Alright, and that was the only other stop I had to make today.” Camellia Cookie said once he and Golden Osmanthus Cookie were outside the library “Thank you again for accompanying me to these.”
“Of course, it was actually really fun getting to go to these places with you.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie told him, doing a closed eyes smile “Shall we head back to your Teahouse then?”
Camellia Cookie grinned. “Yes, I believe there’s a certain kind of tea awaiting us there.”
“Hehe, I believe so too.”
“Then let’s head back-”
“Camellia Cookie!”
Camellia Cookie turned to see who was calling for him. It was none other than Cobalt Cookie, his blue crystalline hair shining in the sunlight as he ran over to his friend and subordinate.
Golden Osmanthus Cookie was surprised to see him, yet she noticed Camellia Cookie didn’t seem too surprised himself.
“Cobalt Cookie? I thought I told you that you could have the day off as well.” Camellia Cookie reminded his friend “Is something wrong?”
“No, but I was out exploring the forests outside the city, and I found something important.” Cobalt Cookie explained.
“Is it urgent?”
“No, but it is something I think you should see.”
Camellia Cookie nodded. “Very well, I shall accompany you to see it.” he decided, turning to face Golden Osmanthus Cookie.
“Golden Osmanthus Cookie, I know this is a bit sudden, and the forests outside the city’s walls can be dangerous, but would you like to come with us?”
“Absolutely.” she agreed without hesitation “And don’t worry, I’ve got my incense burners with me, so we’ll be safe out there.”
“I’m sure we will be. Though stick close to me, just in case.” Camellia Cookie advised “Let’s make our way to the forest then. Cobalt Cookie, lead the way, if you’d please.”
“On it.”
Following Cobalt Cookie’s lead, the trio went outside the city’s walls and into the forests beyond, Golden Osmanthus Cookie and Camellia Cookie sticking close to each other.
As the three of them trekked through one of the forests, they all noticed that the greenery and trees were quite vibrant and lush. It appeared as though this particular forest was quite healthy.
Thanks to the Divine Guardian’s powers returning, nature had been steadily healing within these lands, with the abundance of flora and fauna throughout it being clear signs of this.
Clearly this forest’s good health was also a sign of this.
It still retained a slightly chilling atmosphere, but that was only due to the uncertainty of what lies within it.
Aside from that, the forest was quite pleasant. A fact that Golden Osmanthus Cookie noticed.
“Mm, this forest is lovely!” she commented “The grass and the tree leaves are so green and lively.”
“Indeed.” Camellia Cookie agreed, smelling the fresh clean air with her “And the scent the flowers are emitting is so pleasing.”
“It is, and the scent of sunlight makes it even better.~” Golden Osmanthus Cookie added, her face beaming as she took in the aroma around her.
Camellia Cookie hummed, delighted to see his dear friend so happy. “Cobalt Cookie, is this what you wanted to show us?”
“Not quite.” Cobalt Cookie clarified “The discovery I made is just up ahead. Right over… There we go, over here.”
Cobalt Cookie leading the way, the three came across a small open area within the forest, the most notable aspect of it being the hot springs that the trees surrounded.
“Here we are, take a look around.” Cobalt Cookie instructed.
Doing as Cobalt Cookie said, Camellia Cookie and Golden Osmanthus Cookie looked at the environment around them. Golden Osmanthus Cookie wasn’t sure what exactly Cobalt Cookie wanted the two of them to look at, but the more she gazed at the greenery, the more she realized what was special about it.
“Camellia Cookie, look.” she pointed at the flora surrounding them “See all the butterflies among the flowers? I’ve never seen so many.”
“Ah, you’re right. They must be happy with all the fresh blooms.” Camellia Cookie agreed, watching all the little butterflies happily flutter around the sugar blooms and orchids.
His gaze followed one little butterfly as it fluttered up past the trees, where he saw something else worth noting.
“And see the trees? The trees are barring an abundance of fruit.” he pointed out.
“Ooh, they are!” Golden Osmanthus Cookie acknowledged, admiring all the fruit and blossoms growing in the tree's foliage. Most of them were tangerine trees, but there were a few other varieties of fruit trees growing alongside them.
“This must mean that the balance of nature is returning.” she hypothesized “All thanks to the Divine Guardian’s powers no doubt.”
“It isn’t just the Divine Guardian we should thank.” Camellia Cookie stated “If it weren’t for your incense burners, the Guardian’s strength wouldn’t have returned.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie felt flattered. “Well, it was thanks to you and Cobalt Cookie that I was able to get the materials to make more incense burners to help out the Guardian. And you helped me install them throughout the divine cliff, I couldn’t have done that by myself.”
“But you’re the one who came up with the recipe for the fragrance, and without you we wouldn’t have had a plan to restore the Divine Guardian’s powers. It’s thanks to your inventions that we not only remain connected to the outside world, but our home is healing as a result of your kindness and intellect. You’re a hero, Golden Osmanthus Cookie.”
Humbled and blushing, Golden Osmanthus Cookie reached out her hand to take Camellia Cookie’s. Camellia Cookie noticed this, and held out his hand so she could take hold of it.
Their hands intertwined, the two of them stood there, side by side as they watched the butterflies flutter around them. Cobalt Cookie observed all of this with an unreadable expression, though it was hard to tell, he was content seeing the two happy together.
A moment later, Camellia Cookie looked at his friend.
“Cobalt Cookie, thank you for bringing us here.”
“My pleasure.” Cobalt Cookie nodded.
“Yes, thank you, Cobalt Cookie. This place is so lovely.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie told him, taking one more look around her surroundings.
She briefly took a glance at the hot springs nearby, only to immediately look back due to spotting something she was surprised she didn’t see before.
“What is that?” she asked, looking at the hot springs.
Camellia Cookie followed her gaze. “What is wha- Oh!”
Soaking in the center of the hot springs was a short, furry little creature with a blunt muzzle and short ears.
“Is that a capybara?” Golden Osmanthus Cookie asked, looking at the creature curiously.
“I believe so, what’s it doing?” Camellia Cookie questioned, watching the capybara just sit there nonchalantly.
“I don’t know… but why does it have tangerines stacked on top of its head?”
There were indeed, multiple tangerines stacked on top of the capybara’s head. Yet it seemed entirely unbothered by this, and just kept still within the hot springs’ water.
Camellia Cookie looked at the tangerine pile, noticing something at the very top. “It’s not just tangerines, look.”
At the very top of the tangerine pile, was not a tangerine, but a red carnation. The flower looking like it was about to fall off and land into the water.
Noticing this, Golden Osmanthus Cookie reached out her hand before the capybara, and caught the flower before it could land into the hot spring.
Camellia Cookie watched her do this, an amused expression on his face. “Did you want that red carnation?”
“Mm, maybe.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie answered “It was going to fall off anyway. Do you think the capybara will mind?”
Camellia Cookie looked at the capybara, the creature staring into space with a vacant expression.
“I don’t think it’ll notice either way.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie chuckled softly, and held the red carnation with her pink peony and purple rose. This was the third flower she had found today…
Puzzled, she looked at Camellia Cookie. “Um, you don’t suppose we could head back to the Teahouse now, could we?”
“Oh, you want to head back? Sure thing.” Camellia Cookie agreed, turning his head over to Cobalt Cookie.
“Cobalt Cookie, do you want to come back with us?”
“You two go on ahead. There are more parts of the forest I wish to investigate.”
Camellia Cookie gave his friend a respectful nod. “Very well, I’ll see you back at the city then. Stay safe my friend, and thank you again.”
“Take care.” Cobalt Cookie responded, watching his friend and Golden Osmanthus Cookie leave together.
Cobalt Cookie stood there, watching as the two Cookies started making their way back towards the city. Once they were gone, he made sure he was on his own, then walked over to the hot springs the capybara was soaking in.
He took one of the tangerines that had been floating in the water, and placed it on top of the tangerine pile that was on the capybara’s head.
“Thank you for playing along.” he told the creature “Farewell.”
The capybara said nothing in return, and kept resting its body in the calming hot springs.
Going to the forest and back took up quite a bit of time, and by the time Camellia Cookie and Golden Osmanthus Cookie made it back into the city, the sun had begun to set from the sky. Certain flowers like the morning glories beginning to close their buds.
The two were able to make it back to the Teahouse before it got too dark out, and once they were inside they were greeted by Iced Tea Cookie, who Camellia Cookie handed his shopping bag to. He also asked for his help in preparing the tea Golden Osmanthus Cookie requested.
It took awhile, Golden Osmanthus Cookie keeping herself busy by saying hello to the messenger pigeons, but soon the tea was ready, and Camellia Cookie brought it out to the outdoor table in the garden for him and Golden Osmanthus Cookie to sit at.
Golden Osmanthus Cookie delightfully drank the tea, its warmth spreading through her dough.
“Ahh.~” she exhaled after finishing another sip, taking the tea’s fragrance “Such a pleasant scent.~”
Camellia Cookie smiled, taking a sip from his own tea cup. “It always brings me joy, seeing you enjoy this tea.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie smiled back at him, and took another sip.
Once their cups were empty, Camellia Cookie poured more tea into them, the tea still tasting fresh and warm.
“Thank you again for accompanying me today.” he told Golden Osmanthus Cookie after drinking some more tea “It was much more enjoyable having you beside me.”
“Aw, it was nothing. I always enjoy spending time with you.”
Hearing that made Camellia Cookie happier than he already appeared to be. “I really enjoy spending time with you too.”
A blush grew on Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s face, she looked down at the table.
“Besides, if I hadn’t agreed to hang out with you today, I would have missed out on finding these wonderful flowers.” she pointed out, referring to the purple rose, pink peony, and red carnation she had laid out on the table.
“You really like those flowers, huh?” Camellia Cookie asked, a grin on his face.
“Yes, I do…”
There was a question on Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s mind regarding these three flowers that had been lingering in her head all evening, but she refrained from bringing it up for now.
First, there was something else she wanted to ask about.
Out in the garden, standing beside the garden’s wall beneath one of its trees, was what appeared to be a scroll painting, its contents being covered by a tarp.
“Is that your new painting?”
“Hm? Oh yes! I promised you I would show you it, didn’t I? Do you still wish to see it?”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie answered with a nod.
With that confirmation, Camellia Cookie got up from the table and walked over to his painting, Golden Osmanthus Cookie following him so she could get a good view of the painting.
Camellia Cookie took hold of the tarp, and once he made sure Golden Osmanthus Cookie was standing close enough, he gently pulled the tarp down to reveal the painting in its entirety. Golden Osmanthus Cookie letting out a delighted gasp upon seeing the painting’s contents.
It was a painting of a garden landscape, with various types of flowers sprayed across in neat and winding rows that brought a sort of magical feel to the painting.
“It’s beautiful! You did a fantastic job, as usual.”
“This piece is a bit different from my other works, as it’s not based on a real world location, but rather a scene I envisioned in my mind.” Camellia Cookie explained “Thought it’d make for a unique art piece.”
“You even included the sun!” Golden Osmanthus Cookie pointed out, referring to the little spiraling circle near the top of the painting “It’s so nice!”
“Mm, you’re too kind. It’s not the most accurate depiction of the sun, but I did my best and got creative.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie looked at him, she recalled the story he told at the library and smiled.
“Well, I think you did a great job capturing its spirit.”
Camellia Cookie blinked. He looked at her softly with a sincere smile growing on his lips.
“Heh, I suppose I did.”
For a moment the two stood together in silence, admiring the painting and Camellia Cookie’s hard work together. Eventually, Golden Osmanthus Cookie decided now was a good time as any to ask the question that’s been on her mind.
“Um, Camellia Cookie? Can I ask you something?”
“Hm? Sure, what is it?”
“I’ve been thinking, each place we went to today had a flower for me to find, even the one Cobalt Cookie took us to. I know it’s probably just a coincidence, but I can’t help but feel like those flowers were set up for me to find. So I have to ask, did you plan all this?”
Camellia Cookie’s eyes glanced to the side, a smirk grew from his lips, which he tried to hide behind his hand.
Golden Osmanthus Cookie noticed however, her eyes growing wide.
“You did, didn’t you?!”
The smirk on Camellia Cookie’s face grew. “Perhaps…” he answered, his voice sounding coy.
“Aha! I knew it!” she excitedly exclaimed, causing Camellia Cookie to laugh “You planned this whole day out, didn’t you?”
“Hahaha, I might have had a chat with the merchant and librarian the day prior, and given them the first two flowers. As well as have Cobalt Cookie find a nice spot in the woods to place the third one, though I do question his placement of it a little.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie couldn’t help but softly chuckle. “Aww, Camellia Cookie. You could’ve just given me the flowers yourself. You didn’t have to go through so much preparation for me.”
“Well I wanted today to be special. As I actually have some important information to share with you.”
“Oh? You do? What is it?”
“I’ll tell you, but first,” Camellia Cookie straightened his monocle “you know the rules, a sack of sugar for a sack of sugar. In order for me to tell you the information I have, I’ll need something in return.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie blinked, they were doing this now? Did he really want something from her? Or was this just part of what he wanted to tell her? Regardless, she played along.
“Um, I’m afraid I don’t have anything to give you at the moment.”
“Are you sure? What about the flowers you obtained today? Do you perchance, know what each one symbolizes?”
“Ohh I see. Well as a perfumer, I do know a lot about flowers and their fragrances, but I also know a lot about their symbolism.”
“Wonderful! If you can tell me what each flower symbolizes then, I will share what I wanted to tell you.”
“Okay, sounds simple enough.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie nodded confidently. She glanced over at the table to look at each flower she obtained today, and did her best to recall what each one symbolized.
“Let’s see, starting with the purple rose, they’re often associated with mystery or royalty. The royalty symbolism being due to its purple coloration, as purple is considered by many to be a royal color. Of course, as it is a rose, it does have a meaning behind it that involves love. And in the case of purple roses, they usually mean love at first sight.”
“Fascinating, I believe you are correct.” Camellia Cookie told her “What about the second flower?”
“The second flower, the pink peony, has symbolism involving luck and prosperity, while also representing l-”
The realization made Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s eyes widen. “Love…”
Camellia Cookie started blushing. “…And, the third flower?”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie was blushing too, her cheeks feeling very warm. “T-the third flower, the red carnation, means… deep love and affection…”
She looked at the three flowers once more, the blush on her face growing as she connected the dots.
“All three of these flowers… they each have symbolism involving love…”
Feeling her heart blossoming with anticipation, she returned her gaze towards Camellia Cookie.
“Camellia Cookie… what is it you wanted to tell me?”
Slowly, Camellia Cookie stepped forward closer to Golden Osmanthus Cookie, and gently took her hand.
“I love you, Golden Osmanthus Cookie.”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie looked into his eyes, her heart soaring. This was really happening, he just told her that he loves her, and he really meant it.
“I have loved you for a very long time, every time I see you my heart is filled with warmth and affection. I knew I had to tell you, but it had to be special, for a Cookie like you deserves the world. Your kindness towards others, your passion and free spirit, your dedication to helping nature, everything about you, I love dearly.”
Camellia Cookie felt his face grow hot as he confessed all this, noticing Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s face was completely flushed as well.
“I know we both have a lot going on, with my Teahouse business and calligraphy, and your perfumery, but I want to be in a relationship with you. I promise you, I’ll be a good and loving partner. That is of course, if you’ll have me.”
“Camellia Cookie… I… I-I…”
Golden Osmanthus Cookie didn’t know how to respond. She knew what to say of course, she definitely loved him back, but how was she supposed to confess her feelings when his confession to her was so perfect and romantic?
Not knowing how else to tell him, she moved closer to him and wrapped her arms around him in a loving embrace, burying her face into his chest. This action made Camellia Cookie’s heart skip a beat.
“I love you too, Camellia Cookie. From your art and writing, to your admirable amounts of knowledge, to your virtue and kindness, to the respect and admiration you show towards your friends and caravan, to even your charm. I love everything about you.”
Camellia Cookie’s eyes shone with compassion hearing Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s confession, his lips curving upward into a soft and loving smile. He embraced her back, with one hand gently holding her head as he leaned his head down against hers.
After a minute or so of the two staying like this, Golden Osmanthus Cookie felt Camellia Cookie’s hand cup her cheek, slowly bringing her face up from his chest.
He looked at her with a loving expression, before closing his eyes and leaning his face forward.
Knowing what this meant, and wanting the same thing, Golden Osmanthus Cookie closed her eyes and leaned forward as well, where her and Camellia Cookie’s lips met.
It was the first kiss either of them had ever experienced, and what a perfect first kiss it was. So passionate and gentle at the same time, with the warmth and love the two of them felt for each other skyrocketing.
Camellia Cookie continued to softly cradle Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s face as the kiss persisted, his other hand gently brushing against her blonde hair as he held her close. He could feel her hands holding onto him tightly as she melted into the kiss, her lips moving passionately against his.
Nothing else mattered at that moment, nothing could be more important than this moment these two were sharing together. It made them briefly forget all about their surroundings and responsibilities, the only thing that was important to them right now was each other.
The kiss lasted for quite awhile before the two eventually parted, but only so they could both catch their breaths, once they had done so they immediately went back in for a second kiss, this one being just as gentle but even more passionate than the first.
Golden Osmanthus Cookie felt completely enveloped with Camellia Cookie’s love as he kissed her, Camellia Cookie feeling the same as she kissed him. It was the best feeling either of them had ever experienced.
Though this second kiss could have lasted as long as either of them wanted to, it of course had to end at some point. And after the two parted and took a few breaths, they looked at each other with loving eyes.
Her heart filled with warmth and love, Golden Osmanthus Cookie laid her head down onto Camellia Cookie’s shoulder, wanting to still be held by him, Camellia Cookie happily obliging.
The two stayed like this for a long time, neither of them saying anything as they just kept embracing each other in peace. Eventually, Camellia Cookie broke the silence.
“Golden Osmanthus Cookie? I think our tea is getting cold.”
“Mmm, it can wait…” Golden Osmanthus Cookie whispered, continuing to rest her head onto Camellia Cookie’s shoulder “Can we stay like this? Just a bit longer…”
Camellia Cookie smiled softly, placing a kiss on top of Golden Osmanthus Cookie’s head. “As you wish. We can stay like this for as long as you want.”
Soft moonlight shone on the two lovers as they remained together, adding onto the beauty of the moment. Regardless of what happened after this, Camellia Cookie wasn’t worried.
The one who was most important to him, and the one he loved the most, was here in his arms. Golden Osmanthus Cookie felt the same emotions as him, feeling safe and secure, knowing that she was with him.
And the best part?
This night meant that they would share more moments like this in the future, now that they were a couple.
And perhaps, there would be more flowers too.
