To Love is to Die

Summary:

Peridot, if not handled with care, can get scratched. Or in this case, break.
Sapphire in comparison, is hard to scratch and therefore, harder to break.

Work Text:

Rayne loved Marion.
Marion never loved Rayne.

That's what she believed.

Always opting for the easier option of manipulating Rayne's heart for her own benefit, Rayne was none the wiser. Her love for the other had been used to help her escape while Rayne stayed behind.

Rayne was naive. Rayne was stupid.

Why would her feelings be reciprocated when she was nothing special? Marion saw her as nothing but a tool to help her escape, and Rayne paid for it with her life.

Desperation and foolishness led her to an early grave. Her life was nothing more than something that hardly had worth unless it was used to serve others.

Her trampled, young heart, now pierced with hot metal... She wondered where she went wrong?

The girl, Marion Arlette, had caused her doom. How could she not curse Marion for the pain that she afflicted?

Marion was Rayne's first and final love.

Maybe in another life, she'd be able to call her hers. To be able to fall in love truthfully and faithfully. No tricks, no lies.

As Rayne bled out with a smile on her face. Her sole wish... It wasn't to live.

"I'd like... Maybe one day." She coughed, her tears falling down her cheeks as she was seemingly talking to the air as her blood soaked the stage beneath her, turning it a deep crimson red as the bright stage lights seemed almost dull as they covered her in its light.

And for a few moments, she'd let her eyes close, quietly thinking of a better time. Perhaps Marion would chase after her in another lifetime. Hug her as if she were the only person to ever exist with her.

"Maybe one day, I'd like to call you mine." Rayne smiled, her heart slowing its beat as someone grabbed her hand, holding it oh so tenderly. The hand that held onto hers wasn't too rough but not smooth either.

Tears splashed against her face as Rayne's eyes opened, having heard the soft, unfamiliar sob of that girl, her hair falling over her face. Oh, so that's what it was... Marion never abandoned her. Marion truly did love her.

"Rayne, please. Please don't go..." The gentleness in her voice was strange. She'd never allowed herself to be so vulnerable before. Rayne wanted to speak yet all she could do was look up blurrily at Marion. She was so pretty...

Rayne lifted her hand towards Marion's face, an act to wipe her beloved's tears, only for it to fall short and with a near deafening thud against the stage floor.

Marion's breath stopped in her chest, her heart following with it. If she arrived just a little bit earlier... Would Rayne have survived.?

Marion wept, unable to move.

She let the girl she loved, die... All because she was just a second too slow.

If she could have just one more chance... She would have taken Rayne with her. Even if it caused her downfall, she would have gladly taken Rayne with her. Away from it all. Away from the cruel reality that she was forced to face.
