Old Traditions

Summary:

A valentine doesn't necessarily have to be romantic, and who else would two immortal twins really pick?

Work Text:

Aether remembered this day each year, he had kept to an olden tradition of lighting a candle with a bouquet of flowers and sending them away in a basket with a ballon. It wasn’t the usual valentines celebration and he knew that, but it’s just what they did. He couldn’t help but wonder if somewhere out there, was a girl with the same blond hair as him doing the same thing.

His twin sister. Lumine. Many moons ago, the two had travelled through countless worlds together searching for one to call their home. Although both the twins considered they’re home wherever they were together, they did often want somewhere to settle down. Even so, they were more than content to travel the cosmos.

The two didn’t connect to other people, sure they spoke to them and made friends but they were only really loyal to each other. So, despite the usual romantic undertones of the holiday, they often ended up as each other’s valentine.

Even during Lumine’s years asleep, while Aether was the prince of Kheanri’ah, no matter how tempting it may have been he refused every offer. Opting to spend his day alone, doing exactly what he was doing now.

He knew that he could go see her, he should go see her. Even if he didn’t make his presence known to her he should go and visit her. It had been awhile since he checked in on his sister. Aether was getting worse at hiding his longing for his twin sister.

Then again, he didn’t know if that was a good idea. Lumine, she was the more outgoing, people pleasing one of the two. Despite what they might look like, Aether remembered there was a saying for that. What it was, he wasn’t exactly sure.

The point being, by now she probably had a different person, maybe the floating mouse that travelled along with her. Aether didn’t blame her, she deserved to celebrate the holiday with people she cared for, the only reason he didn’t exactly was because well, an army of Hilichurls and abyss creatures wouldn’t make a good valentine.

They would just ask about his weird traditions, no the only one who would understand would be his sister. Aether grew tempted to just appear further along the path, if only for a fleeting moment.

He couldn’t talk to her, not truly. Not yet. He would not influence his sister’s decision in the matter of this world's truth. Aether was more than confident in Lumine’s abilities, even more so now. He would continue watching over her even though he doubted he would ever actually need to step in.

Aether let out a soft sigh, opening an abyss portal before him. “Lumine, I love you.” He murmured, even though his sister would not hear.

Because he was her brother, and she meant the world to him.

She was supposed to wake up to Kheanri’ah as a home, that’s why he had been so intent on staying there, yet she woke to it as the monolith of their separation.

It had to been Dainsleif’s fault, why didn’t he stop the sinners?
