Crack of Dawn

Summary:

Now on a good day, there’s a lot of things that he is willing to put up with for the long con with the Akatsuki.

Notes:

Day 6: Sunrise

This ship has a soft place in my heart, and honestly I like to think Obito is the one who has a small crush on him first especially in this instance.

I hope you all enjoy ^^

Work Text:

Now on a good day, there’s a lot of things that he is willing to put up with for the long con with the Akatsuki.

Hidan’s attempts of indoctrination or attempted murder? Easy. Kakuzu’s threats? He’s not too worried. His own partner threatening to strangle him or blow him up? It really isn’t an issue.

However, that was when he was having a good day.

Right now? That was not the case. Obito was fully ready to sleep in today since the mission he and Deidara were assigned was to begin at night. After dealing with everyone else yesterday after a long, torturous meeting with Pain, he wanted to be able to sleep and dream without being interrupted.

Imagine the outrage, the utter irritation, the complete horror when instead of getting his wish he finds himself not doing that. No instead he was awake–well barely awake–with his hand in a firm grip and being pulled down the corridors. He thankfully had the reflex to pull on his mask beforehand however that did little to cool his growing ire.

“Come on, come on, un! We’re going to miss it, you fool, un!” Deidara whispers, for once holding a tone of excitement.

It was confusing; normally Deidara wanted as little interaction with him as possible. Sure he only knew him based on his persona he presents, but that was the point. He wanted to keep them all at arms-length as ‘Tobi’ so that he doesn’t get attached to them. So what the hell was Deidara thinking dragging him out of bed and to Kami knows where?!

Still he has half a mind to remember to keep up appearances, “Senpaaaai where are we goiiiiiing? Tobi wants to sleeeeep…”

“Hmph! I am trying to show you something amazing, un! It only happens at this time you should be thankful I’m in such a good mood and want to show it to you, un.”

You brat, I would rather be wrapped up in my blankets asleep than dealing with whatever asinine art project you have now, His eye twitched behind the mask however he cleared his throat a bit.

“But It’s so eeeeearly Senpai…”

“Shut up and just hurry the hell up Tobi, be grateful I am thinking of you, un!”

Obito bites back a growl as he manages to avoid tripping over his own feet. For once he felt his resolve wavering in favor of getting to sleep in and rest rather than dragged out on a whim. Normally he was able to handle Deidara; he even took some amusement in his antics when it came to using his jutsu in battle.

This was just plain annoying and as Obito was about to lose the very little patience he woke up with, he suddenly is greeted by the cool morning air as Deidara pulls him outside. He squints through the hole in his mask, making out the familiar glow of twilight as he is led forward.

“Ghh? Why are we outside, senpai?” he yawned towards the end of his sentence though, scratching under his chin before they suddenly came to a stop. He recognized the area after a moment as the top of the base; an overhang that gave them an unaltered view of the forest and the horizon line where the sun was going to rise.

“Shhh! Be quiet and watch, un. It’s not cloudy here for once, this is one of my favorite things in the whole world, un,” Deidara was now facing him with a huff. His blonde hair was down, hanging to his waist and he was still in his sleeping yukata. He looked unrecognizable like this but not in a bad way.

Obito was quiet now, staring at him for a long moment. Trying to make sense of what was happening right now.

Then he sees the first sign of sunlight; watching it slowly peek over the horizon. Obito stares as the sunlight creates a bright aura around Deidara who now turns his back to him. He could practically feel Deidara’s joy radiating off him as he has his eyes completely on the sunrise happening before them.

“See, un? See the sun rising, un! Such beauty and color and rarely can it be witnessed like this! The purest expression of art by none other than nature, un! It’s so beautiful, so pure, and it only lasts for an instant, un!”

Never had Obito ever heard so much emotion that wasn’t irritation, rage or murderous intent coming from the blonde. He wondered if he was actually asleep and not just having a weird dream. It felt so surreal, like this was something private that wasn’t meant for him to view.

“And no puppet to sit and tell me it’s a waste, un,” Deidara’s voice was softer now, “Beauty is always fleeting dammit, and this is proof, un.”

The joy was now joined by another emotion; one Obito was more familiar with yet never named. It made it feel too real. He slowly walked up beside him to make sure he had a better view with a hum.

His partner was being vulnerable with him for once. Something he didn’t expect considering how often Deidara told him how annoying he was and how angry he made him. This was the last thing he wanted to happen, something he needed to nip in the bud right there and now before it could go any further.

There was no room for bonds, no time to form attachments. He knew this…yet…

He stepped up to stand beside Deidara and tilted his head, “..Oooh I see why you woke me up now! The sunrise is sooooo pretty! Lookit all the colors, senpai!”

Deidara sniffed and then a snort that made Obito turn his head towards Deidara who pushes some of the blonde hair from his own face.

“Heh…see I told you, un,” Deidara turns to face him again, as the sun rises higher; showing a rare smile directed at Obito for once. Only one thing ran through his mind at that moment.

He had never seen Deidara look prettier than he did right now.
