Work Text:
Tane greeted his big brother at the door when he came home from work. It had been a long day and Minoru really just wanted to pass out and sleep. But he couldn’t deny Tane anything.
“Big bro!” Tane exclaimed, “I have something for you!”
Minoru set his bag on the floor and knelt down to ruffle Tane’s hair. “Oh yeah? What is it?”
“A map!” Tane said, pulling a sheet of paper from behind his back.
Minoru examined the drawing. It looked like Tane had used every crayon in his box to make it. He recognized the layout of the house. Someone must have helped him with the general shape of things – probably their dad. Tane had specified a path that took him through almost every room in the house and ultimately ended in the tatami room where they had the kotatsu set up more often than not these days. It was only October, but the cold had already started to sink in.
“And what will I find at the end of this map?” Minoru asked.
“You’ll see!” Tane shouted and ran away in excitement. He called back over his shoulder, “It’s a surprise!”
Minoru chuckled to himself. He supposed he could play along with whatever Tane’s game was for a little while.
He made his way through the house, following the route set by Tane. It seemed kind of random and he had to keep doubling back, but eventually he made it to his destination.
There he found Yutaka sitting at the kotatsu. There was a plate of giant onigiri on the table. Minoru hadn’t expected to see him today, but Yutaka was part of the family now. He could come and go as he pleased. And more and more, Minoru wished he would never leave. He belonged there. With them. With him.
“Yutaka?” he asked, after he had recovered from his initial surprise.
“Hi,” he said, “Looks like Tane’s map was effective?”
Minoru let out a small laugh and sat down. “Did you help him with that?”
Yutaka nodded.
Minoru took in the dim lighting and battery-operated candles scattered around the room. It was cozy. Intimate. “So what’s the occasion?” he asked.
Yutaka glanced down shyly. “Happy anniversary, Minoru”
Minoru blinked in confusion. “But it’s not – “
“It’s the anniversary of the day we first met,” Yutaka explained.
“That explains the onigiri,” Minoru said.
Yutaka nodded.
Minoru slid over, so he was next to Yutaka. “Happy anniversary,” he said, and planted a kiss on Yutaka’s cheek. A comfortable silence fell over them as they looked at each other.
A silence that was interrupted by Tane entering the room and yelling, “Yukata! Did I do a good job?” Tane threw himself onto Yutaka’s lap.
Yutaka laughed and hugged Tane. “You did a great job! Thank you!”
“Does that mean we can eat the onigiri now?” Tane asked.
“Yes,” Yutaka told him.
Tane shouted in delight and reached for an onigiri. Yutaka and Minoru followed suit. And the two – three – of them enjoyed their anniversary date. Together.
