“Good morning, Kristoff!” Eric exclaimed as he got into the front seat next to Kristoff.
“Morning, Eric,” Kristoff replied, turning on his truck and getting ready to pull out of the hotel parking lot and head to the regatta staging area.
“I’ve got a map, if you want me to help navigate,” Eric said.
“Uh, thanks, but no. I’ve been here before.”
“Really?” Eric asked.
“Yeah.”
Kristoff turned to get onto the interstate.
“Are you looking forward to this race?” Eric asked.
“Just a sec, I don’t want to get crushed by a semi while we’re merging.” Kristoff took advantage of a lull in the traffic and merged onto the interstate. “You were saying?”
“Today’s race?” Eric asked.
“The route doesn’t have any bridges, I like that part.” Kristoff realized he should try to reciprocate the conversation. “What about you?”
“I sailed on the lake near here once in high school,” Eric said.
“You sailed in high school?” Kristoff asked.
“Yeah, for my high school team.”
“Your high school had a sailing team?”
“Did your high school just have crew?” Eric asked.
“Uh, no, I’m pretty sure my high school just had football and basketball. I don’t know, maybe wrestling and soccer, too, I didn’t pay too much attention. I didn’t row until I got to college.”
Eric looked at him. “I wouldn’t have guessed that. What did you do in high school?”
“I worked to make money and studied enough to get into college,” Kristoff replied.
“Oh,” Eric replied.
