Chapter Text
The fog covered Castle Village like a veil, as oil lamps flickered in the darkness, casting faint light on the cobblestone alleys. The wind carried whispers—warnings and forgotten secrets. Every corner hid behind a shadow, and the eyes of the town saw everything without revealing anything.
Carson walked slowly into the village, her armor heavy from battles and years of lost wars. Her armor was weathered, its once shiny surface now dulled from time. She had a tall, athletic frame, her features sharp and her long brown hair flowing freely over her shoulders. Her deep brown eyes held a constant sharpness, as though they had seen too much but were still searching for something. The gaze she wore was distant, hard, yet there was a subtle vulnerability underneath—a quiet storm. She looked like someone who had been through many wars, yet had yet to find peace.
Her footsteps echoed in the narrow street as she made her way toward the heart of the village. She had heard the rumors about a dangerous group hiding in the shadows, and now she was here to find them, to confront them.
The tavern stood at the heart of the square, its sign "The Oil Press – Hot Wine & Stories" weathered by time. The air carried the scent of wood and wine, a mix of memories and promises. Stepping inside, Carson found Maybelle behind the bar. Maybelle was a woman who radiated an effortless charm, her short bobbed blonde hair styled neatly, her appearance chic and approachable. Her warm blue eyes shone with a touch of mystery and mischief, always gauging her surroundings, always calculating. Her full lips curled into a playful smile when their gazes met, a smile that promised something both dangerous and inviting.
"Carson..." Maybelle whispered, her voice laced with uncertainty and something familiar. "I didn’t expect to see you."
"Neither did I. I'm looking for answers," Carson replied, her voice steady, though hiding a subtle tension.
From the shadows, two eyes gleamed, reflecting the challenge of the night. The figure in the dark corner was Greta—her presence cold and intimidating, her eyes dark and penetrating. She was tall, with vibrant red hair that hung straight down her back, contrasting sharply with the dim light of the room. Greta’s features were delicate yet sharp—her high cheekbones and pointed chin giving her an almost regal appearance, while the intensity in her deep brown eyes spoke of a hidden world, full of secrets and shadows. She exuded a dangerous beauty, her body lean but strong, dressed in practical, fitted clothes that allowed her to move with the grace of a predator. Her half-smile was teasing, always implying that she knew more than she let on.
"New faces in town..." she said softly, yet full of challenge. "They always bring stories."
Carson turned to the stranger, her gaze sharp, but with a hint of curiosity. "Will you buy me a drink, or are we going to fight?"
Silence stretched between them, the air thick with unspoken promises. The two women exchanged a moment of silent understanding, setting the tone for the night ahead. Beneath the tension, something else was being born—something deeper than words could convey. The shadows of the night were full of secrets, waiting to be revealed.
Carson didn’t look away. She knew how to recognize tension in others' eyes, and the woman before her held something—a warning, perhaps, but also a curiosity. Something unexplainable.
Maybelle remained silent, watching as the two women exchanged a brief glance, her mind working quickly. The rumors about this woman were many, but nothing was clear. She had learned to listen more than speak and to watch for hidden signs.
"So," Greta broke the silence, her voice light but full of weight, "if you’re not buying, then I think it’s time we talk about why you’re here."Her voice was smooth, with an edge that didn’t go unnoticed.
Carson didn’t answer immediately. She looked around the room. The feeling of the space made her uneasy for a moment, but she quickly pushed it aside. She was in places where silence was more dangerous than any word.
"I’m here for information," she finally said, her voice quiet, but resolute. "Rumors say something about a group hiding here."
The woman behind the bar watched her with the same intense gaze. There was something in her eyes—something that reminded her of the shadow that had descended into Carson's life. The shadow of desire, of seeking, of needing to find something that couldn’t be explained. Maybelle gently placed her wine glass on the table in front of her, as if wanting to break the silence with a simple, yet meaningful gesture.
"This group..." she said indifferently, "isn’t something you can find so easily." Her voice trembled just a little, but the tension was obvious. "I’m not sure your search here will lead you to something you can handle."
Carson wasn’t surprised. She had learned to read the signs of desperation and fear in many faces before. What Maybelle said didn’t catch her off guard.
"I don’t know if I can handle it," she replied quietly, "but I have to know." The decision had already been made. Words couldn’t stop her.
Then, from the dark corner, Greta spoke again, her words coming like rain on prepared soil:
"If you really want to know, you have to find the bridge…"
