Work Text:
After having almost all the agency killed, and the war between humans and ability users started, Fyodor returned to France, in order to have Dazai and Chuuya eliminated.
Nikolai has already proceeded to grieve his beloved friend, reminding himself that he did passed away in that helicopter; and although he haven’t, the poison would have killed him instantly with his already deplorable state.
Wasn’t he supposed feel free from all emotions ? To not feel bonded to them ? Then why was this pang of anguish dwelling within his heart ? He has a lot of questions swirling his constantly racing mind.
But few days later, he somehow found out that Fyodor was alive, and now all he wanted was to do was to find him and hug him, and to scream at the top of his lungs that he never wanted him dead, that all of this was just to reject all the hard feelings he bore towards the Russian man.
Nikolai wasn’t dumb, he knew better than anyone that Fyodor has made him feel understood only for manipulative purposes, yet he couldn’t help it but feeling as if someone cared.
It was cold outside, it was raining, the usual France dull weather, Nikolai was constantly hoping that he could see his “best friend” even if this one didn’t cared a bit about him.
Fyodor outwitted everybody, Dazai included, he has taken over Bram’s body, earned one order, has started a war between humans and ability users, which he did not considered as humans.
Everything was going according to the plan, as he always thought, overconfident.
He felt as if everything was so easy, to the point where it became boring, even the game Nikolai organized at Mersault seemed boring to him.
He thought quickly about Nikolai, but it wasn’t anything genuine.
He didn’t knew why but he found himself thinking about all the moments he has spent with him, the times he called him “bestie”, but he quickly washed away those memories, his mind way too occupied with the outcome of his schemes.
He thought that all the members of the DOA were ghosts of the past, mere means to an end.
He repeated the same schemes for centuries, now why would he care ?
But here he was, finding himself confronting Nikolai, the withe haired man suddenly hugged him, and said with a raspy voice:
- “I never wished death upon you Dos-kun, all those times I called you bestie…it was genuine…I thought that killing you would have helped me from being free of emotions. But I was wrong, I found myself being stuck in a loop of grief…Here you are, alive…Even if I do know that you only used me for your own interest…know that I’m happy to see you again, Dostoy…”
Nikolai was behaving differently, not being an extravagant psychotic jester anymore, after all, hadn’t he said that he was sane ? He wasn’t insane at all, in fact, he was aware of others people motives, could feel empathy and also feelings.
Fyodor glanced at him nonchalantly, he found himself unusually hesitating, and he hated that, nothing as mere as feelings could hinder his plan, he choose to directly reject, and spoke with a cold voice:
-“How foolish”, he said as his eyes were narrowing, revealing further his annoyance, “I used you for my own purpose, it wasn’t unbeknownst to you, I’m rather surprised that you aren’t just a stupid jester…By the way I don’t even remember your name”
Nikolai felt hurt, it stung to hear him saying that, but deep down, for unknown reasons, he felt as if his words weren’t genuine.
Nikolai surprisingly smiled, and jokingly said
“Dos-kun, we may have not spoken that much to each other, but I have a feeling that everything you say might be just to hide your real feelings…I went through that as well…”
Fyodor felt a bit targeted, though, he didn’t felt irritated by what Nikolai said, and simply replied
“You should know that my heart his as cold as Russia…”
Nikolai laughed, his eccentric persona resurfacing, though, Fyodor still had a blank face, the black haired man said with a monotone voice
-“Enough, now I have much more interesting things to do, after all, I outwitted the world, a mastermind like me should be scheming for bigger things, not talking to you”
Nikolai didn’t felt upset, and instead whimsically asked:
-“And what about your promise to kill me ?”
Fyodor chuckled, thus breaking his usual poker face,
-“I’d be foolish to waste my time in order to kill you…”
In fact, it wasn’t the reason he didn’t wanted to kill him.
Nikolai was walking away and said teasingly:
-“It’s weird to see that even the so called “villainous mastermind” can still feel attachment…”
Fyodor glanced quickly at Nikolai before leaving,
-“I just don’t want to lose my time…It’s not like I started to consider you as my beloved friend as well…Nikolai”
Nikolai’s eyes widened, never he heard Fyodor calling him by his name.
