Work Text:
The beach was always pretty at this time of day. Sunset framing the waves and the sand. Of course, the company was no problem.
Seraphine cleared her throat, the rose of her gem peeking out just above her collar.
“My dad told me about fusion. It’s how two gems can fuse together into a new combined whole.”
Rell, her golden hair puffed up like a lion mane, sipped her soda. Cherry flavoured.
“And, because I have a bunch of gem shards in my body, you think we can make it work?”
Silence filled the air. Awkward silence. The roughness of Rell’s history couldn’t help but make Sera feel a tad out of place.
“I mean… worth a shot?”
Standing up, Rell stretched out with a slowly unfolding symphony of popping cracks. It was a fun party trick, especially during a brawl.
“Yeah, I guess,” Rell drawled, “But I’m not a dancer and I’m not sure how we do this.”
“Dancing is an easy way to get comfortable. We need to try and… find a sweet spot for us to mix. It’s like trying to dance classical in a rock concert.”
“Or headbanging at ballet.”
Seraphine snapped her fingers, a dorky grin stretching her lips.
“Bingo! So, let’s move our bodies.”
Dork.
It was a bizarre attempt if anyone was watching. Seraphine was more of a singer, her body following the melody of a voice rather than commanding the music. And Rell… well. She was mainly trying to copy Seraphine while attempting not to be obvious.
She watched Seraphine attempt to twirl, her fairy floss hair, dyed but pretty, shining with the orange sunset.
It was bizarre how they mixed. Seraphine was all fairy lights and gentle songs, Rell was about rebellion and slamming bloody knuckles on her bedroom wall.
Seraphine twirled, Rell took her hand with dominant energy, pulled her in…
Before accidentally falling on one another. Their breathing was close, twin smiles began to grow. What were they doing? Who cared? They were here. The laughter was a chiming melody, a giggle and chuckle becoming one sound of love and comfort.
Neither of them saw the pink and orange glows begin to surround them.
Seraphine’s head was burning.
Rell’s hand touched her forehead.
“What happened?”
“Beats me. Can you hear me?” Rell sounded at once close and far away.
“Yeah. Yeah. Where are you?”
“Sitting on the beach.”
“Me too. I can’t see you.”
”Hold on, let me stand up.”
Rell walked, unsteady. Her legs felt different. Like trying to play with an upside down controller.
She collapsed near a half broken mirror. She looked, and saw-
Seraphine saw Rell’s mouth.
Rell saw Seraphine’s eyes.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh!
“We fused!” They said together. Rell hugged Seraphine. Seraphine hugged Rell as they tried to get comfortable on their new legs. They stopped against a lamppost, leaning on the metal for support.
Seraphine took the rein.
“I’ve got to tell my dad.”
