So in the space and time between the lines of a book there lives a world. In this world there are humans and shape shifters. They get along fine. Most shape shifters go into acting.
All books in our world are stages in theirs.
They have their own lives when the book is not being read. Each is contained to the around the "stage". However when books touch each other they make a bigger world for the people to visit. This is how actors and actresses can take different roles and parts. Or talk to each other.
Actors and actresses that don't want to act, take roles in unlikely books to be read, (like in a museum or something) they are always on call but they live their lives without trouble.
Books in book- just props or another world themselves?
Since there are more than one copy of each book, they all have different actors/actresses. Which is why some people love, like or hate the same book.
They can hear the reader but can't do anything about it. For example. "Do go that way!! Ahhh!" The actor could feel confused why they are reading a horror book if they aren't enjoying it, feeling bad about scaring them.... Or another example could be "I am throwing the book across the room if this character doesn't change." Now the actors fear for their jobs and maybe lives...
Actors reminiscing about pass roles.
Ewin: I am never doing another boat book, I found out I am sea sick... But couldn't back out! Worse role I have ever done! I almost puked on my co-star so many times!
Buddy: that sucks. This one time I had to eat a living mouse! Like what?! How is that legal?!
Ewin: ugh that is disgusting!
When you read all night
Actor:...do you think they will read the book in one sitting?!
Stage manager: they have to sleep sometime! Just hold on! Rest between scenes!
When you reread a book
Stage manager: oh? They are saying the lines with us.
Actor: impressive. I wonder how many times they have read it...
When you stop liking a book
Stage manager: now this book is read a lot, it should be an easy performance for your first time.
Actor:...I don't know, the reader hasn't really interacted like you said they would...
Getting rid of a book
Stage manager: The curtain calls. It's time for a new reader. If you want to stay with this reader, hurry and jump books.
