When I was
Just a little boy
I asked my father
“What will I be?
Will I be handsome,
Will I be rich?”
Here’s what he said
To me

“What about your birthdays growing up?” Katsuki asked, looking up from his computer. Celeste paused, her hand coming away from the canvas in front of her. “I know you said you didn’t have many friends growing up. At least, not close ones, so how did you spend your birthdays?”
Celeste put down her paintbrush and sat back on her stool, bringing her hands on top of her thighs. “Well, it was just me and my dad every year,” Celeste said. “Like you said, I didn’t have many close friends, so I didn’t bring them to my house to celebrate.”
Katsuki frowned for a split second but smiled softly before Celeste could see his expression. He didn’t like that Celeste didn’t grow up with many friends, but it helped him understand her more.
“What did you and your dad do, then?” Katsuki asked. Celeste thought for a minute, thinking back to all the birthdays she’s had before. It was still crazy to her that she would be turning 21 this year.
“Well,” Celeste started. “Before I hit fifteen, we would go and do something. Ice skating, a trampoline park, an amusement park, stuff like that. My dad tried to host a birthday party for me once, invited people in my class that year, invited my relatives on my mom’s side since he was the only one left in his family, but, uh, no one showed up.
He spent a lot of money for that party. He hired an entertainer, someone to do face-painting, and ordered some catering for food. He even bought all these gift bags with really nice stuff for the kids or whoever wanted one.
That was my fourteenth birthday, and you know, I wasn’t even mad that no one showed up for me. I was mad that my dad spent all this money and time, just for no one to show. He was so excited. My heart broke that day, and it breaks all over again when I think about it, heh. He was just so excited, said that almost everyone RSVP’d.
That was the day that I said I didn’t want anything to do with my relatives on my mother’s side, and that was the day that I realized that maybe my ‘friends’ aren’t really my friends at all.”
Katsuki was speechless. He wanted to go over to her and comfort her, but he knew that that wasn’t what she needed. He knew that Celeste had made peace with how things were, long ago. It’s both something he admires about her, but also wishes he could go back in time to fix. He wishes so badly that they grew up together. They would’ve been inseparable.
“But, anyway,” Celeste chuckled. “After that, me and my dad would just celebrate at home. For my fifteenth, he asked if I had wanted to do something like old times. Ice skating, or an amusement park, or just spend the day at the mall and go shopping. But I had just wanted to stay in the house and spend time with him, watch tv and eat junk food for dinner. And that’s what we did for every birthday until I moved out and came here.”
“That’s-” Katsuki paused, trying to think of what he wanted to say. “Honestly, that sounds really nice. You two had each other and spent all that time together, making great memories. I’m glad that you grew up with someone like that.”
Celeste smiled and brushed the hair out of her face. “He’s my dad,” Celeste said. “And he’s a dad that I wouldn’t want to trade anything for. He’s the better half of me, that’s for sure.” Celeste laughed while Katsuki felt like sobbing. She was just too damn cute for his poor heart.
“What about a birthday cake?” Katsuki asked after he took a moment to compose himself. “Did you guys get anything like that after your fourteenth?”
“Oh my Irene, yes!” Celeste exclaimed, nodding hard. “For my fourth birthday, my dad bought this cake from this mom-and-pop bakery near us and I. Fell. In. Love! Every birthday after that, he would buy that same cake and it’s still my favorite to this day.”
“What was the bakery?” Katsuki asked. “We could always go there on your birthday and go get it. And I’m sure your dad wouldn’t mind if we stayed an extra night at his place.” Celeste smiled at the suggestion but Katsuki could tell that it wasn’t a very happy one.
“Ah,” Celeste muttered. “The bakery closed down a few weeks before I moved here. So we wouldn’t be able to do that.”
“Oh,” Katsuki said. It was quiet for a few moments, the two lost in thought. “Well, what was the cake like? Did they make it look like a paint bucket?” Katsuki chuckled as Celeste threw a balled up piece of paper at him.
“No!” Celeste laughed. “It was really cute, actually. It was this, like, light pink color with white, red and green frosting wrapping around the sides. Then there were cherries spread around the edge of the top, and there were these three frogs made of frosting huddled together on the top.” Katsuki stopped laughing as he took what she said in.
It was a few seconds of silence before Katsuki spoke in a deadpanned voice. “You’re such a frog nerd.”
“Shut it!” Celeste exclaimed, laughing as she threw another paper. Katsuki swatted it to the side, seeing it bounce off a wall and onto the floor out of the corner of his eye.
“Stop throwing shit!” Katsuki cackled. The two laughed for a few seconds before it went quiet again. Not an uncomfortable silence, the two felt happy that they could have moments like these.
“Ughhh,” Celeste groaned as she put her face in her hands. “It was such a good cake, too! It was three layers. White cake on the top and bottom with strawberry cake in the middle. It just sucks that I won’t be able to have it again.”
And that’s when Katsuki just became boyfriend of the year.
“How about you draw it for me,” Katsuki suggested. “I can tell you’re getting frustrated at the painting you’re working on. It’ll give you a break from that. And you can come sit next to me while you draw.” Celeste looked at her painting, staring at it for a few seconds, before looking back at Katsuki and getting off of her stool.
“Yeah,” Celeste said as she grabbed her sketchbook. “I’m not liking how it’s looking so far, so I could use a break from it.” Katsuki smiled as he moved over on the couch, getting comfy and giving Celeste room to lay on him.
“Yayy,” Katsuki exclaimed. “Come draw me a cake!”

“Hey bro,” Eijirou called as he walked into his and Katsuki’s dorm. “I got the stuff you asked me to get!”
Katsuki was in the kitchen, standing at the counter and muttering to himself, the drawing of the cake in his hands.
“Kacchan!” Izuku exclaimed, skipping into the dorm behind his boyfriend. “Are you making a cake?”
Katsuki then looked up at the two, staring for a few seconds, before snapping back into reality and nodding. “Yeah,” Katsuki said. “Can you just put the stuff on the table?”
Eijirou nodded and did what was asked. “This is a lot of ingredients just for a cake,” Eijirou said. “Are you making a few of them?”
“Yeah,” Katsuki answered. “I’m trying to remake Celeste’s favorite cake. She’s had it every birthday since she could remember, and the bakery she got it from closed down. I want to get it right before her birthday in two weeks, so I’m gonna be making a few different ones.”
“Was it a chain bakery?” Izuku asked. “Why not just go to a different location and see if they have it?” Katsuki shook his head before walking to the table to grab the ingredients.
“The bakery was a mom-and-pop,” Katsuki explained.
“Augh!” Izuku exclaimed, tears already coming to his eyes. “You’re so sweet! Oh, I’m gonna cry!”
“Oh my fuck,” Katsuki groaned. “Don’t you dare start crying-”
“That’s so manly!” Eijirou cried, rushing over to trap Katsuki in a hug.
“Oh, for fucks’ sake.”

“Dude,” Eijirou said as he stood next to Katsuki, covered in flour. Izuku was happily sitting on the floor of the kitchen, out of their way as he ate the leftover cake batter in the bowl. “I love you, but we’re gonna go broke at this point if we keep messing up and having to buy more ingredients to start all over.”
“I know,” Katsuki grumbled as he ran his hand down his face in frustration. “These fuckin’ frogs are such a pain in the ass. How the hell did they make them not look like green turds?”
“The cake batter is really good, at least,” Izuku quipped, smiling cheekily as the two turned to him with a ‘look’.
“We could’ve made a whole ‘nother cake with all the batter that you ate, you nerd,” Katsuki grumbled, turning back to look at his twentieth failed attempt.
“Let’s clean up and start again,” Eijirou sighed. “We’ll get it right before her birthday in a week.”
“Yeah,” Katsuki muttered, grabbing the cake and handing it to Izuku, who took it happily.
Fuck these frogs.

“Baby,” Katsuki whispered. “Wake up.” He slightly shook Celeste, trying to wake her up from her nap.
Celeste stirred, grumbling as she moved away from the offending hand, getting comfier in her bed. Katsuki chuckled slightly as he stood up from leaning over the bed.
“Fine then,” Katsuki smiled before lifting the covers and laying down next to Celeste. He laid on his side and pulled Celeste closer to his body, having to stop himself from laughing as he watched her cuddle up to him. He stayed still for a few seconds, staring at her sleeping face, before moving his arm down to her stomach and lightly ghosting his fingers over her skin.
Celeste jerked against his hand, her eyes shooting open as she looked at Katsuki. “Don’t you dare-”
Celeste burst out in a fit of laughter as Katsuki attacked her stomach, the only part of her body that is ticklish.
“Don’t- stop- fuck yo- ugh!” Celeste exclaimed, trying to push Katsuki’s hands away but to no avail.
“Don’t stop?” Katsuki asked, smiling wide. “Okay then, whatever you want, Baby.”
“No-!” Celeste yelled, laughing even harder. Katsuki stopped after a few more seconds, chuckling as he pulled Celeste close.
Celeste breathed hard as she calmed down, letting Katsuki hold her before turning in his arms and lightly smacking his arm.
“You fuckin’ ass!” Celeste laughed. “You’re always pulling dirty tricks!” Katsuki laughed as he let her continue her assault on his arm.
“Happy Birthday, Baby,” Katsuki said, leaning down and bringing Celeste into a kiss. Celeste kissed him back before they parted.
“You already told me that today,” Celeste said.
“But that was on the phone,” Katsuki said. “That doesn’t count.” Celeste chuckled as she pushed herself up into sitting on her bed.
“Fine,” Celeste smiled. “Thank you, Babe.” Katsuki smiled and sat up as well, pecking Celeste on the lips.
“You’re welcome,” Katsuki said. “Now come on, we gotta get going to meet up with our friends.”

“Que será, será. Whatever will be, will be the future's not ours to see,” the song played.
Katsuki and Celeste swayed to the music, holding each other.
“You know,” Celeste muttered, her head laying against Katsuki’s chest. “The future may not be ours to see, but I’m glad it brought you to me.”
Katsuki tilted his head down to look at Celeste, breathing in the scent of her shampoo. “I’m glad it brought you to me, too,” Katsuki whispered against her hair. “You have no idea how grateful I am.”
“Que será, será. What will be, will be. Que será, será,” the song ended. The two stayed where they were for a few more seconds, soaking in the nice moment before Katsuki pulled away.
“Come on,” Katsuki said, smiling down at Celeste. “I have one more surprise for you.”
“Huh?” Celeste questioned, looking from Katsuki to all of their friends. “What is it?” Their friends were all smiling at them, excitement clear in their expressions.
“Go sit at the table and I’ll bring it to you,” Katsuki said, placing his hand on her lower back as he led her to the table. Celeste went to the table and sat down at the end, looking at her friends.
“He spent a lot of time trying to make it perfect,” Izuku smiled, tears coming to his eyes.
“He threatened us to not say anything to her until he showed it to her,” Melissa laughed, talking to Eijirou. Eijirou chuckled and shook his head. Celeste was completely confused on what they were talking about but she was cut from her thoughts as she heard someone start singing Happy Birthday.
Celeste looked over to the kitchen, seeing Katsuki walking towards the table with a cake in his hands, singing. All of their friends joined in on the singing.
Katsuki placed the cake down in front of Celeste in the middle of the song, smiling softly as he took in Celeste’s reaction. She stared down at the cake, tears immediately streaming down her face as she realized what cake it was.
Her favorite. The cake she had on every birthday. It looked exactly like how the bakery made it. It was perfect.
Katsuki and their friends finished singing the song and looked at Celeste, waiting for her to blow out the candle.
“You guys,” Celeste sobbed, laughing as she wiped at her eyes. “I can’t believe this.” Katsuki smiled softly as he rubbed his hand up and down Celeste’s shoulder.
“You better blow out the candle before it burns down this place,” Katsuki joked. Celeste laughed as she took a deep breath before leaning forward and blowing the candle out.
Their friends all cheered, clapping and jumping around. Celeste laughed as she watched them, still crying. She looked up at Katsuki and smiled.
“You made it?” Celeste asked. Katsuki turned red and rubbed the back of his neck as he avoided eye contact.
“Eijirou helped me a lot,” Katsuki said. “But yeah.”
“Hey!” Izuku cried. “I helped too!”
“No you didn’t,” Katsuki playfully glared. “You gained five pounds because all you did was eat the cake batter and the failed attempts.” Izuku gasped as he looked down at his stomach.
“I did not!” Izuku exclaimed. “You take that back!”
“I’m gonna send a picture of it to my dad real quick,” Celeste said as she pulled out her phone. “Then we can all have some.”
“Whatever you wanna do, Baby,” Katsuki said, kissing the top of her head. Celeste took the picture and sent it to her dad. She typed out a message, angling the phone away from Katsuki’s eyes but he was too preoccupied with his rowdy friends anyway.
A few minutes later, Katsuki had cut the cake and everyone had a piece when he felt his phone vibrate. He pulled it out as he sat down next to Celeste, seeing a new text message.
Katsuki pocketed his phone as he smiled, grabbing Celeste’s hand as they all ate the cake he had made.
Celeste couldn’t have been happier.
