Work Text:
The air was humid and felt heavy. He felt it whenever he breathed in and out. He found it troubling, really. Felt like he had to do it manually each puff. A slight smile grew on the boy's face because he knew shortly he wouldn’t have to keep breathing for long. The grin fading as he looked up at the invisible moon. Quite the opposite of a full moon, the brown haired always wanted to pass on a full moon because of its beauty. Also because it's dramatic and always happens in movies. Doesn’t matter to him.
He puts a hand on the metal railing. It's a touch that sent a freezing shiver up Dazai’s spine. He looked down, it was sure to kill him. Holding onto the bridge's barrier, he bent over and untied his Port issued shoes. They were black and leathery. He put them aside, facing the cars driving past. The boy also tossed the smelly jacket that man, Mori, had given him. He would rather live a long life than die wearing that.
Dazai took one last breath, smelling the grass growing through the cracks in the concrete, the cold night air, and of course, the fresh water crashing against rocks below him. The boy swung a leg over the railing to jump off and-
“What the hell are you doing?” A voice startled the brown haired. Dazai fell backward onto the ground, unfortunately not the splashing river. The bandaged boy turned his head and gave a scowl to the interrupting stranger. It was a tall guy with long blonde hair and glasses. He wore a thick jacket that kept him warm. “Wait, don’t answer that.” He spoke again, sighing. “Can you not try to kill yourself? It would seriously mess with my schedule.”
Dazai let out a laugh instead of the snarky response he had planned in his head. The brown haired got up, using the barrier he was just about to toss himself off as support. Then he spoke after getting his balance again. “Your schedule?” He snickered, covering his mouth slightly.
The blonde haired walked forward and grabbed something out of the book bag he carried over his left shoulder. A small green notebook with the word “Ideals” titled on the front. “Yes, my schedule.” Glasses opened it and turned to a page, then continuing to hit the bandaged teen over the head with it. One hit after every word he said. “Never. Once. Does. It. Say. I. Have. To. Witness. Somebody. Committing. Suicide. Today!” This however, just made Dazai laugh more, he held his stomach, trying to contain his laughter.
The brown haired finally got a grip and finally was able to stop his cackle. He wiped a non-existent tear of laughter off his face and spoke. “Is that so? So why don’t you walk away so then I can do it?”
“That wouldn’t sit right with me.”
“Huh? So I just can’t die today all because of you, glasses?”
“Don’t!” He made a fist and grinded his teeth together before calming down and regaining his composure. “Don’t call me that. Also, yes. You can’t.”
“Then I’m going home. See ya, glasses!” Dazai waved and turned away.
“What the- Get back here! You forgot your shoes and jacket! It also wouldn’t sit right with me if you just go home!” The blonde yelled at him. The bandaged one ignored him. Glasses eventually had it and threw one of his shoes he left. It directly hit the back of Dazai’s head.
“Oww! What the hell?” He turned around and rubbed the back of his head.
Glasses huffed and yelled back to him. “At least- At least let me give you a place to stay tonight!”
“No thanks.”
“I’ll cook you food.”
“You got crab?”
“I have a lot of things, and yes. I do have-” He was then interrupted by Dazai running back and quickly putting his shoes on. He also threw his jacket back over his shoulders.
“Let's go then!” He gave the blonde a smile.
The walk back to the blonde's house was mostly silent. Only crickets making conversation. It was when they were about a block away from his apartment when they finally opened their mouths. Dazai started by opening his jaws and placing a cigarette in between his lips. The blonde signaled for the bandaged to give him one as well. He chuckled as he gave one to the person who stopped him from jumping. “Are you supporting minors smoking?” Dazai teased.
“I’m a minor too, dumbass.” He spoke as he put the cancer stick in his mouth.
“What? Oh I- I thought you were like 20. Sorry.” The apology at the end was sarcastic. Glasses gave an offended scoff, and Dazai lit his cigarette then lit his own. “How old are you then? You can’t be younger than me, surely.”
“I’m 17. You?”
“Same here. My name is Dazai, in case you were wondering.”
“Kunikida.” The blonde revealed.
The two arrived at a crappy apartment complex. They ashed their cigarettes against the bottom of their shoes and tossed them aside. The blonde walked inside the building and took the path up the stairs. Dazai stopped and asked why they couldn’t take the elevator. The blonde scolded him and called him an idiot because the elevator had obvious “DO NOT ENTER” caution tape all around it. The duo both opted for the stairs and they finally made it to Kunikida’s small apartment. It has 3 total rooms, Dazai noticed. A kitchen, also with a table. Then two other sliding doors, which the bandaged one guessed one was the bathroom and the other a bedroom. It was shockingly clean compared to the rest of the complex. Dazai was pretty sure he saw a junkie sleeping in the hallway.
The brown and blonde haired boys set their shoes next to each other before walking on the apartment mats. Kunikida gestured for Dazai to sit down on the floor at the table. He did so, and he watched the blonde open the fridge and he took out a can of crab and placed it on the counter. He turned his head to the brown haired. “I only have canned crab, is that okay?”
Dazai gave a nod. “It’s the best crab. It’s processed to perfection.” Kunikida gave a slight frown of disgust and turned back to the fridge. He took out a bowl of leftovers and heated it up in the crappy microwave which he had to hit to get it to start. Then he opened the can and gave it to Dazai. Kunikida sat in front of him as he waited for his meal to re-heat.
“This might be personal, but why did you try to kill yourself?” He questioned Dazai.
He licked his fingers from the buttered crab. “Asking all the deep questions here, Kunikida-Kun. Truth is, I just don’t see value in life. Another truth is I’m just drawn to suicide and I’m not sure why. All my attempts have failed, including this one.”
“So..you have attempted before? How many times?” His expression softened.
“Isn’t Kunikida a curious one? How about I ask you a question. Why did you bring me to your humble abode like this?”
“Similar to you, I’m drawn to something but it’s not suicide, it’s my ideals instead. Only people I think should die are criminals who hurt others for pleasure or some sort of gain.” He answered. The microwave beeps over and over again, basically screaming at glasses. Kunikida got up and retrieved his meal. He also got a pair of wooden chopsticks and returned to his spot.
“I feel like I’ve read something like that before. In some news article. About some terrorist who kills criminals. Azure something..” Dazai shoved his mouth full of crab.
Kunikida was about to take a bite of his food then he froze. “Right…The um- Azure King. What do you think of him?”
“What do I think? Hm, I think I know who he is.” Dazai smirked.
Glasses shuttered a bit. He finally took a bite and spoke. “Yeah? Who, Dazai?”
The bandaged boy pushed his finger against Kunikida’s nose over the table. “I think it’s you, Kunikida-Kun!” Dazai still had his shit eating grin.
“Well- I- Why would you think tha-” The blonde was interrupted.
“Can’t you relax? I don’t care. I’ve committed more crimes than you.” Dazai sat back down and put his elbow on the table and rested his cheek on his palm, continuing to eat his can of crab.
“You? It’s not like your mafia or anything-” Then Kunikida once more observed the teenager. His attire did look mafia-like. And to add to that, Dazai laughed at Kunikida's comment. “Holy shit, you're from the Port Mafia.”
“I am. I hope that means you don’t have to kill me because of those ideals of yours.”
“I thought you were suicidal? I mean! Not that I’m encouraging it nor am I saying I’m going to kill you-”
“...I want a painless suicide. Pain is something I hate more than that doctor.” The response Dazai gave honestly raised more questions than questions answered.
“I think I’m going to stop prying for my own sanity.” Kunikida sighed.
After a bit, the two finished their meals. Kunikida was the one to clean up after them. The blonde opened one of the sliding doors and instructed Dazai to wash up before bed. The brown haired entered the room and closed the door. The bathroom was leaky and had a yellow undertone to each porcelain piece.
Outside the bathroom, Kunikida left a set of comfortable clothes by the door. Kunikida changed into his own sleeping attire and put his long hair into a low ponytail. He looked in his closet for a spare futon. Dammit…The blonde could have sworn he had an extra. His head turned to his white futon he slept on every night in his empty room.
Dazai exited the bathroom. His hair soggy, and his bandages ever-so-slightly moist, old, and loose. He changed into the clothes Kunikida left for him. He somewhat resembled a wet black cat. He entered Kunikida’s bedroom. It was empty besides the closet, futon, and bookcase. The blonde turned to him.
“You look good with your hair in a ponytail, you should wear it like that more often.”
Kunikida hid his slight blush “I-I’ll keep that in mind. Um, well. I only have one bed- If that's-”
“Of course it's okay. I feel like I can trust you, Kunikida-Kun.” He gave a warm smile.
“You don’t really look like you're from the mafia…Also please stop finishing my sentences. I’m perfectly capable of finishing on my own.”
“I’m just a mere errand boy, that's why.” Dazai plopped on Kunikida’s bed.
The two eventually settled into the futon together. Kunikida’s glasses put away next to the bed. The lights were out and the curtain was closed. Kunikida’s face red from how close together they were. Dazai’s hair dried because of the body heat they created from the very little space in between them. To Kunikida, Dazai seemed unbothered. But Dazai felt the same way as the blonde, he was just an expert at hiding emotion.
They were facing each other, and Dazai gave up his act and kissed glasses. The blonde’s eyes were wide open- His face fully red compared to his soft blush earlier. They slowly closed as the kiss deepened. It then broke when Dazai got on top of Kunikida. Their lips clashed together again. Not as shocking as the last one. They were both eased into the situation now.
Dazai put his head in a nook of Kunikida’s neck. They both panted quietly. Then the brown haired bit down on the blonde's neck. Glasses let out a slight moan which was covered quickly by his hand. Bandages gave Kunikida a hickey on his neck before kissing him again.
His hand reached down and tugged on Kunikida’s sleeping pants. A hand gripped his hand. The blonde shook his head before speaking. “No- It’s immoral to have sex as a minor..”
“Yet not illegal.” Dazai urged
“Doesn’t matter. We can have sex when we are both adults, got it?”
The brown haired nodded. They kissed one last time before Dazai rolled off and they embraced each other as they slept.
In the morning, the bed was half empty. Dazai was missing. Kunikida awoke and that was the first thing he noticed. He tugged at the empty space. He noticed a note through his blurry vision. He grabbed his glasses and picked up the note.
Yoo!! I had mafia work to do in the morning!! :P
Sorry Kunikidaaa!!
-yours truly
His handwriting was horrible. It had a little doodle of a crab and a heart at the bottom. Kunikida sighed as he got up for the day.
