The Truth About The Addams Curse

Wednesday Friday Addams had always prided herself on being a pragmatist, she was cold, efficient, and honest. Even to herself, but when Enid had broken up with her and had gotten back with the gorgon, her father's words had come crawling back to her. He had said that should she ever fall in love and the relationship be over. That Wednesday would die of heartbreak. He went on to add that it ran in the family. As a young Addams that was very tantalizing, not the relationship but the dying part, but falling in love for Wednesday just was not feasible, she didn't think she ever could fall in love. She was actually repulsed by the thought, and not in a good way.

But when Enid took her hands and cold met hot, and those big blue eyes gazed so far into her brown irises that Wednesday was sure she felt them in the back of her skull, she knew she was in trouble. That was all without even mentioning Enid’s great big smile that was ear to ear. Enid was happy, happy to see her. How could anybody let alone Enid be this happy to be around Wednesday was a mystery, and then Enid spoke, she spoke with all the courage in the world.

“Willa, will you be my girlfriend, it would make me SO SO HAPPY.”

It was over, not for Enid but herself, once she felt her stomach churn, and her chest pound, and her throat dry up. Wednesday knew that it was over. Love was like a worm, and she was the apple. The long walks with her roommate, the giggling at Wednesday's macabre statements that Wednesday was deadly serious about but the pastel girl shook off without a second thought. The smile. The silly smile.

Some words were wind, said without much effort and went the next, empty and free flowing. These were not.

“Yes, Enid.” Wednesday said. Her voice barely above a whisper. There was a part of her that couldn't stomach the idea of this being a cruel joke, not the kind of childish cruel that was shoving her brother pugsley into a locker. That was physical, that would heal. No, matters of the heart. More specifically her own, which Wednesday didn't believe she had until she saw her pet scorpion ran over by bullies. That was cruelty beyond merit.

“o-emm-gee!” Enid beamed. She said omg as three letters elongated, making it longer than it needed to be. That mattered little, as the blue-eyed werewolf closed her eyes and smacked her lips into her own. It was heavy, Wednesday didn't imagine how docile she became as suddenly Enid grabbed her by the waist and pulled her into it further. She couldn't breathe, Wednesday made no effort to stop the advances and that invited the pastel girl to go full throttle, Enid's hands began to roam up from her waist, her werewolf strength adding to the pressure as they traveled up her waist, and she heard Enid's moan through the mish mosh of their lips connecting.

Enid pulled back and giggled. “Willa.. Sorry, you're my girlfriend now.”

Suddenly Wednesday couldn't find herself caring about Enid's pronunciation of words. The only thing she cares about at this moment is her werewolf roommate.

-

They were walking to the quad, Enid's hands guiding her own. Enid was leading, Wednesday following. That's what was puzzling how quickly she fell into this routine of being Enid's girlfriend. Enid was different, Enid was bold, kisses were frequent, they always held hands when they walked anywhere. Conversations were different, Enid spoke about her plans after highschool, her plans to start her own pack. To go to college  for journalism to cover sports, specifically hockey. It made sense, Enid had a successful blog already. Wednesday heard and listened to every word. She was supportive. She found herself being for the first time in her life, being grateful. She was in love.

That's why it didn't make sense, when suddenly Enid made contact with Ajax on the way to the quad. She stopped in place. She looked at him as he called her name.

“Can we talk please Enid.” His voice was like a mouse's, meek, timid, and squeaky. It definitely was rehearsed. He had been planning this rendezvous.

Instantly Wednesday found herself, involuntarily she might add, squeezing Enid's hand. That immediately caught Enid by surprise. Those blue eyes suddenly flashed at her. ‘pity’ Wednesday recognized.

Suddenly Wednesday didn't want to hold her hand anymore.

“It's okay Wednesday. I'll be back, I'll talk to him okay?” Enid said as she let go. No departure kiss. No smile, Just a curt nod. Then the two of them departed away from the direction of the quad.

She stared at them until they were out of sight. The empty nevermore hallway keeping her company.

Words were wind she remembered. Wednesday Friday Addams did not have a good feeling about this.

-

She hated the feeling crawling up her spine as she stared at her lover. After seeing Enid and Ajax walk away, a gnawing sensation stayed in her chest.

Wednesday found herself craving reassurance so she sought the one place, person rather she could seek it out. Wednesday found the idea of it so repugnant, but her chest tightened and ached for it regardless of what her mind thought. So the search for her girlfriend transpired reluctantly. It didn’t take long as Enid was soon found in the quad writing… and Wednesday was behind a pillar watching her.

Wednesday shook her head at the lie. She knew Enid was drawing. Her girlfriend never did use their grace period to the fullest extent. When Enid failed to show up at the library after walking away with Ajax and then class and lunch, Wednesday knew something was up.

Staring could only do so much, never in her life would Wednesday say that she would be nervous or reluctant to confront the object of her indignation. Enid however had her heart, black and indifferent as it was to most things. But not her, and her blonde hair and canine grin.

So she steeled her nerves and walked toward her, the quad was empty, not unusual. Most students took their grace time on the outside grounds. The distance was short and Enid stiffened as Wednesday approached, clearly taking note of her walking style and the sound of her shoes.

Wednesday realized the defensive stance and that did not calm her nerves about the situation. When she arrived she debated on sitting across from or next to her. She did not expect the choice to cause her face to heat up but it did. Wednesday Abashadley took her seat across from Enid.  Enid froze as Wednesday sat before her, stopping her doodling completely.

Wednesday took out her books and Enid returned to her drawing. A firetruck, red and vivid as a house that was in the process of being burned down.

Wednesday just hoped that wouldn’t be her relationship.

“Hello Enid” Wednesday speaks rather timidly to her own surprise. “did not see you at lunch or the library is everything okay?”

Enid doesn’t look up at the statement.

Something picks at Wednesday at that, but for the moment she lets it go as Enid speaks once again.

“Sorry, kind of got a lot on my plate at the moment, I kinda wanted a moment to myself” Enid says with an almost indifferent tone. Wednesday stares at her girlfriend in disbelief, Her continued doodles and dismissive attitude made her expectations for this conversation dwindle.

That feeling picks at her again and this time it forces Wednesday to act.

“Enid” Wednesday says her name with enough conviction expecting her partner to look up at her while she draws but she doesn't. Wednesday ignores her heart pulsating with hurt at being ignored. “I'm here for you if you need it.” She offers. Her black heart means it, and the goth hopes that Enid knows that too.

Wednesday is well aware that her emotional support may not be the best support due to herself being distant and not understanding human connection fully, but Wednesday was always willing to try with Enid.

Enid just gives her a curt nod, and goes back to pretending like Wednesday hadn't even been there.

Her chest aches as Enid continues on with seemingly indifference, but Wednesday gives her the benefit of the doubt, that maybe she really was stressed out and did need privacy, and so she sits the rest of the grace period studying, sneaking in peaks at Enid as the hour doted past.

When the two of them get up to leave at the bell Enid is in a rush, grabbing her things haphazardly sliding them into her bag to leave faster, Enid beats Wednesday to walk away but Wednesday quickly stands and walks to catch up and grabs her wrist.

“Enid wait” Wednesday says with enough tone to have Enid stop in place and look at her.

Enid's sheepish deadpan stare of bewilderment doesn't leave the raven's mind. But enough of that

Wednesday stares back up at her girlfriend and feels heat rise up her core. She snaps her nerves into high gear once again and closes her eyes and leans up for a kiss, the distance minimal, it's the one thing she has wanted all along since standing in the hallway watching them walk away together. It's almost there, Enid is so close. Wednesday could smell her perfume that made her knees so weak. It's almost serenity, feeling Enid's exhale suddenly…

Her lips don't connect. She's robbed of it. The assurance that everything is okay. That her and Enid are okay.

Wednesday pulls back so much you would have thought she would have ended up back in New Jersey. As she opens her eyes Wednesday sees the look on her face and it's one of the worst feelings in the history of her life.

Enid just stares at her.

Like Wednesday is some foreign object.

-

Being right had always been so vindicating in her life, it showed guile, foresight and lastly intelligence. Wednesday had always reveled in it silently, this time however. She did not find being right so vindicating. This time, she wished for the first time in her life to be dead wrong. That this was all a mistake, a prank, a trick. A nightmare that would end.

“Wednesday are you okay?” Enid’s voice causes an immediate flood of pain receptors. The werewolf girl extends her hand forward in a reassuring gesture.

Immediately Wednesday goes full danger mode and recoils back.

Enid is breaking up with her, and it's hopeless.

No vision could predict this, Wednesday felt herself unraveling. Her heart is bleeding and her voice croaks out a confession. A fraught attempt to show and convince Enid.

“I still love you” Wednesday choked out,  the tears she felt threatening to spill as she locked eyes with her Roommate. It felt so disgusting, Enid’s status reduced to something so basic for their complex relationship.

“I know, but I need you to understa-” Enid tried to speak but Wednesday closed her eyes, and they fell her cold tears.

“Will you find a new room or will I?” Wednesday asked. They could no longer remain here together. She could no longer bear the sight of the woman who tore her black heart out. Words were wind she summarized after everything, did all the bouts of affection mean anything at all? The declarations of love?

Now they were just empty bitter words.

She did not want to fight for this. Enid had made her choice, and Wednesday will make hers.

“I will” Enid spoke softly. She felt Enid's hand enclose and caress her face. Wednesday flinched but did not pull back. She had her eyes shut tight when Enid embraced her. Her arms wrapped around squeezing with her strength.

“I'm sorry.” Enid said as she pulled back, tears filled her blue eyes. She did not see them however Wednesday shuttered and whimpered

“Be who you are and go”

When Enid left, for real this time. Wednesday felt grief, her room was no longer theirs; it was just her singular room now. When she finally heard the door shut for the final time she stood and walked to the window. Still adorning the cellophane on one side. Enid had insisted on taking it. It was cruel to think that Wednesday fought harder to keep that on the window than to fight for her relationship.

But she couldn't force Enid to love her, that was cruel to herself and cruel to Enid. There was honesty and there was whatever lies could be had staying together and pretending that Wednesday was okay with them. Something she couldn't bring herself to do.

Thing had made himself sparse, she had not seen him since the breakup. Mayhaps he was going back to New Jersey.

Wednesday was alone. Goody had said as much. She resented the words. She resented Ajax, her immediate thoughts turning into plots and schemes, the current front-running plan of her nail gun borrowed from the janitor seemed the most appealing.

It had actually made Wednesday smile at that.

Maybe the Addams Curse was all nonsense.

-

It had been a week, Wednesday had thought long and hard about Enid and her abrupt departure, dozens of thoughts flooded her mind looking for any excuse that maybe she would get a chance that would enable her to recuse herself from wrong doing.

Wednesday paced back and forth, her mind running on hurt. Uncomfortable thoughts had drifted in and seeped into her mind. Wednesday had paid them no mind for the moment, but they had they had remained and festered there. They picked at her,  and Wednesday would have no mind for the thoughts. They were wicked and wretched and not in a good way.

She missed her so much, she hadn't touched her cello. It reminded her too much of Enid, inviting her into the cello sessions was a mistake. They way the werewolf girl used to hum along to the innocuous tunes. Wednesday had even learned more tunes that Enid would enjoy.

Now it was gone, their time together was over.

No. Wednesday wiped the tears from her puffy eyes and shook her head. No thing, no mother and father, no pugsley. It was just her, and she would win Enid back.

-

She stared at the oak door, and felt bats in her stomach, Enid wasn’t here, Wednesday had made sure having seen Enid go to the Jericho shuttle with Divina.

She knocked three times, and waited. The air felt heavy and a little dry as she stood as stiff as a tree.

When the vampire finally answered the door she looked like she didn’t want to be there as much as Enid wanted to keep being in a relationship with Wednesday.

“Hello Yoko-“ Wednesday tried to speak, but was immediately cut off.

“Enid’s not here” Yoko cut off sharply, she had to respect the vampire. Straight to business. Wednesday was not here to start a blossoming friendship. She had only ever sat at the nightshade table when she and Enid were a couple.

Wednesday had suspected as much when she had thought to come here that yoko would greet her in such a manner. She swallowed her pride and ignored the hostility.

“I know, I waited for her to leave. I wanted to talk to you.” Wednesday says dryly. Unfortunately Wednesday  was not made of stone.  Talking about Enid did take quite a toll on her.

Yoko frowned, obviously finding the notion of waiting for Enid to leave to be a little jarring.

“You’re stalking her now?” Yoko looks at her bewildered. “And you wonder why she broke up with you. Don’t you see how controlling that is?” Yoko's question make her heart throb.

It takes everything in her not to tell Yoko that despite Wednesday’s blunt demeanor that surprisingly she had been more docile than she ever thought she could be and it was actually Enid who was the more assertive and a bit more controlling partner in the former relationship.

Wednesday shakes her head and feels her eyes water.

“I never got a reason…” the confession chokes out of her. As the words trail off, Wednesday feels that awful feeling of pity flash on her. She can’t see behind those black sunglasses  but Wednesday knows that it’s not a happy feeling.

“Addams…” Yoko starts.  But this time it’s Wednesday’s turn to cut her off.

She reaches into her vest and pulls out a card. A scheme really.

Wednesday hands it to her. Yoko reluctantly takes the pink envelope containing the card.

Yoko looks down at it, and wavers a bit. Seeing the color realizes that Wednesday went pretty far for this excursion.

“What does it say?” Yoko asks pretty reluctantly.

Wednesday just stares and sighs, seeing that vampire state of perplexity forces her to act

“It’s a forged note from me pretending to be Ajax inviting her for a picnic in the woods. I had Xavier draw the dandelions and the flowers on the inside.”

Wednesday rattles off and she sees Yoko's jaw as it suddenly drops, exasperated.

Wednesday curses herself mentally, shame running down her spine. Her honesty was a curse.

“First of all, why would you tell me all that? And second of all. Why do you think I would go along with this crazy plot. Don’t you realize how crazy this is? Why can’t you just catch her in the hall like a normal person?”

Wednesday feels a lot about those statements. She’s taken aback for a moment. And she wavers for a second.

“Every time I see her, she ignores me. She doesn’t even look my way. I don’t exist to her anymore.” Wednesday trails off. “if- I hurt her…I just want her to talk to me”

The memory of walking in the hall a few days ago rings back in her mind. Wednesday hugs her school books with both of her arms and tightly holds it against her chest as she walks to class, feeling eyes on her as she walks in nevermore. The past three months were a blur as she had Enid by her side, and was hand in hand with her. With Enid gone she felt exposed. Her soul longed back to when nobody looked at her like this. Like she was a soul split in half. Her heart stops as she spots Enid coming towards her. Him in tow. She sees Enid’s eyes glance on her for a second as they resume back to their conversation. Enids to her left and Ajax is on the opposite side on the far side of the narrow hall as they hone past.

Wednesday can’t bear the thought of catching a glimpse of her up close and for once in her life looks down and away as they pass. She doesn’t get very far and for some odd reason feels a pull that makes her stop dead in her place for a moment and in that time finds the courage in her chest and she turns around.

the feeling in her heart as Enid doesn’t do the same, it’s delusion, masquerading as courage, and hope thinking she would. Enid keeps on walking like Wednesday hadn’t even been there and turns the corner without even glancing. She is as she wanted to be. Alone. Wednesday didn't attend class for the rest of the day.

Yoko stares long and hard at the paper. Finally after an eternity. She agrees. Before Wednesday can say anything and express gratitude, she shuts the door. Wednesday was left standing there. Grateful that she said yes and very anxious that she was on a path to talk to Enid again.

Hope had always been a fool's emotion but Wednesday found herself with a thin smile as she prepared for the getaway in the forest. A proverbial pep in her step appeared as she set to work on the afternoon rendezvous.

AS Wednesday hauled the supplies to the middle of the woods. She had felt confident that this stunt would prove that Wednesday was serious about getting back into Enid’s good graces and that she hopefully would forgive any transgressions that had transpired. The fluttering in her chest was pure motivation as she walked to the clearing. once she arrived she was met with flat terrain muddled with branches and patches of rocks, she went to work on clearing a patch to sit. The enthusiasm made her work methodical, everything had to be perfect, every branch, every stray rock in the way would be gone. As she worked a vain thought crept in heart, a little hope reigned into her chest. Wednesday hoped that her letter would inspire Enid, maybe to doll herself up for the event. She ignored the crimson in her cheeks and shook the juvenile thoughts away as she placed the branches and rocks out the way and first laid the blanket, then the basket filled with Enid’s favorite drink from the weathervane, changed to an ice version to prevent its contents from going lukewarm. As well as steak and eggs, a staple of her meals since she had wolfed out.

Wednesday had her own meal set aside from Enid’s. All in preparation. She had wished for something more ghastly, but settled on sauteed chicken, and buttery potatoes. Due to making Enid as comfortable as possible.

She was finishing the last of the preparations when she heard a twig snap.

Her heart fluttered

Enid.

Wednesday knew it was her because of well… Enid's clumsy nature. Panic set in first before Wednesday could revel in her scheme's success. Her first thought was to stick to the plan and surprise her when Enid arrived at the picnic basket. But since Wednesday was already present and Enid came into view, in her purple nevermore outfit and was clutching the envelope, that plan was foiled.

Enid walked up and stared at her, and Wednesday stared back. Like a deer stuck and caught in headlights. Enid’s dripping contempt, like something had been festering.

Wednesday instinctively put her arms back across her chest and found herself looking down and away. Enid’s glare makes her nerves radiate a fleeting feeling in her spine.

“Enid” the wolf’s name leaves her mouth with the strength of a whisper. Wednesday slowly looks back up and meets her stone gaze. “You’re early…” It's a jest, an honest one.

Enid steps forward and speaks. Assertive like she had always been since she wolfed out and since the start of their relationship.

She holds up the fake letter, contempt filling the air as disdain leaves her mouth.

“Wednesday what’s the meaning of this, why are you lying and forging letters?” Enid says as she gains distance to where she's now encroaching on the picnic spot.

The words cut sharply and Wednesday feels it in her chest as she nears, the pit of worry. It's a nauseating feeling that is not pleasant in the slightest.

Her mouth dries up a bit as she stares at the taller girl, but she finds the courage to speak.

“I just wanted to talk, and see how you're doing. This is the first time you've…” Wednesday trails off mid sentence as she stares at Enid searching for words that weren't antagonizing or that would scare her off. “or rather we've talked to each other since…” Wednesday doesn't even finish that line of thinking and immediately changes subjects by gesturing to the picnic basket.

“I've gotten you your favorite dish. “Wednesday kneels down to the basket and unveils the plate absconded with tinfoil covering. “Steak and eggs” Wednesday mustered the unveiling with as much enthusiasm as she could with the lump in her throat. She flashes Enid a quick nod and then returns to the task at hand.

She put the plate on the blanket covering their spot and then reached and grabbed the weathervane iced mocha out of the beverage holder. Wednesday shakes the drink to show it has ice in it. The ice rattles off with a sense of purpose as she places it next to Enid's plate. Showing that the drink was nice and preserved.

Wednesday stands and stares at Enid as the preparation is showcased and finalized. She gestures to her picnic with her arms and invites Enid to sit.

Enid is bewildered at the gesture she stared for an eeriest amount of time before her eyes soften and at that Wednesday hates it so much as hope spreads throughout her chest.

Enid sighs and looks away for a second, resting her face as the blinks blink away the anger.

Wednesday is stiff and straight as a board as she studies Enid's every reaction.

Enid suddenly clutches the envelope and gazes into Wednesday’s soul.

“You did all this for me?” The wolf girl says calmly.

Wednesday nods, speaking now is dangerous. Her chest can’t take much of this. She feels so much hope at that. It's so intoxicating, dangerous even as it feeds her delusions; and just as quick as it arrived it's gone.

Enid suddenly looks away again dejectedly. It takes everything inside Wednesday not to beg as Enid seemingly sighs in frustration.

“Wednesday” Enid says as she regains eye contact. “We’re not together anymore…”

Wednesday cuts her off before she can finish.

“I just wanted to spend time with you..” Wednesday mutters with a croak as she attempts to process the millions of feelings running up to her skull. Her heart feels like a powder keg.

Enid stares back at the offer. Wednesday hangs in the dreaded silence. Enid closes her eyes and just lets out a long sigh.

“I appreciate you doing all this Wednesday,” Enid opens her eyes and Wednesday can feel those blue tracers directly connect to match eyesight. “But I can’t…” Enid trails off while maintaining eye contact. Enid’s pity flashes at her again and Wednesday wishes she never left her room.

“Won’t try right now, we need space Wednesday and that’s okay. I do care about you”

As a friend…. as a mistake’  Wednesday shakes those thoughts away.

Enid walks toward and slowly extends her hand with the forgery letter Wednesday wrote.

Wednesday stares at her puff pastry skin, she can’t help it. Wednesday sniffle spazzes but Enid is indifferent.

Wednesday has to move mountains in her heart that Enid is making the hard choice here and sticking to the breakup and that's ultimately a good thing.

“Right?” Her heart hurts at that.

But as Enid attempts to hand her the letter she can’t bring, Wednesday won’t bring herself to take it.

Enid holds her hand out and Wednesday feels the final barrier break down now that the space between them is negligible.

“Im sorry  Wednesday croaks and shamefully starts to feel those cursed tears start to spill  and Enid just stares at her.

“Wedns----” Enid doesn't finish.

Wednesday looks Enid dead on as tears and whimpers leave her, all the while trying and  clawing to stay in.

“Whatever I did. I didn't mean to hurt you. Please just talk to me. I’m sorry

Wednesday feels her heart at a hundred miles a minute. Enid stares at her. She feels the cold tears sliding down her cheeks. Her breathing is erratic.

Enid’s eyes water for a moment, when she speaks, it’s over.

“Wednesday, You did nothing wrong, but… we-we just can’t be together. I’m sorry”

The words parting her lips wash over the raven. The comfort calms her for a moment before Enid reaches over and grabs her left forearm and pulls it towards her, her hand is next as her palm is pried open and Enid hands her the letter and closes her arms back.

Wednesday doesn’t fight it. Her eyes hurting as she stares at the blue eyed werewolf, she just turns and walks away not before waving, walking past the picnic and their meals and back to the clearing.

As Wednesday watches her former girlfriend walk away she can’t stop another set of cold tears starting the process of streaming down her face.

“It's because he’s a boy… isn’t he?”

The raven wipes her tears and readies to return to her room, packing the picnic up and wondering when she…

Wednesday Addams shakes her head some thoughts are better left buried.

-

Unfortunately for her It wasn't nonsense, in the weeks and days following her breakup from her pastel wolf. Things had turned from marginal bad to worse.

Wednesday had seen her ex-lover in the quad holding hands like she used to. She had seen them eating together. She had seen her smile at some inane joke the stoner had said that didn't even constitute humor.

Enid was thriving without her, and Wednesday, well Wednesday was just existing. She no longer raised her hand in class, she felt no need to. She was smarter than all of her peers. She did her work and turned it in. She went to breakfast, then her classes, then the mid-day meal with Eugene, then her afternoon classes then beekeeping club then back to her dorm. Where she wallowed with self pity.

Her father was wrong, the Addams curse didn't cause you to die, Wednesday was a temple, her body functioning perfectly in accordance to before the breakup, but just simply existing without Enid now, It felt like a chore. Loving someone who did not return your feelings, perhaps that was a bigger burden to bear than death. She had to live with the fact Enid would never smile at her again, and that. That was truly a curse.

She missed Enid, her laugh, her earnest attitude, and most of all Wednesday missed her patience. The picnic did nothing to dim her shine.

No matter how much she tried, she never broke her spirit, mayhaps at the gates mansion but that was long ago.

Wednesday decided on something drastic. She sat up, wiped the tiny sniffles and got in all black, baggy black hoodie, black pants, black shoes. Which now thinking back on it was pretty standard for herself. This was a mission and she needed to maximize her chances at success, and it was four in the afternoon she needed to do something.

-

Wednesday had run the numbers out of the one hundred and eighty nine days she and Enid had spent together in their shared room. She had an assortment of stuffed animals, one in particular had a knack for being ignored more than the others. Polar the penguin, a short thing, no more bigger than a foot. Black and white adorning all the characteristics of a real penguin all mushed together with fabric and cheap material was not as popular as the others. He was neglected in Wednesday's opinion, he was cuddled approximately three times. According to the math, that was about three and half percent. She would not miss him. Another Plushie, Dino the dinosaur, was more popular.

(Wednesday Friday Addams did not assist in naming.)

Wednesday stalked the bloodsucker and Enid, she watched them leave. The two of them left for the shuttle to Jericho. She was out of earshot the entire time, Wednesday watched and stalked. The moment the shuttle left she chose her chance to strike.

She dashed back to Ophelia Hall, she was quick, fast, hiding in plain sight. She knew no one saw. Truthfully Wednesday wasn't sure anybody cared. But Ophelia Hall was none the wiser, picking the lock on Yoko's door was child's play. Her uncle fester used to throw her and her brother in ravines tied up. This was nothing.

Wednesday opened the door, and she didn't stay long. It felt odd being around Enid's stuff. She wasn't here to snoop, she was here on a rescue mission. She ignored Yoko's apparent side and she eyed the mountain of stuffed animals. She was looking for one in particular. After practically handling the animals like they were booby trapped she found him. Polar the penguin, as Wednesday expected, buried under a dozen others. She pried him free and left the room. She locked the door and left. Tucking him into the baggy sweatshirt she'd like to say it was a dangerous route to her own room, that she was Viper in a daring heist, but truthfully there was nobody. Wednesday Addams opened her door and entered her room. Enid's side is empty as ever.

She shut the door and leaned against it, letting herself droop till she was sitting against it. Wednesday pulled polar out of the baggy sweatshirt. Her heart thumped.

So insignificant Wednesday thought. Her pride resented the penguin. However the comfort it brought her however was unquantifiable. For that,  She could handle her ego being knocked down a inch or two.

Wednesday slowly gathered her bearings and set the plushie on her bed. She stared at polar, black and white.

‘At least he fits in’ Wednesday thought to herself.

She went to her writing hour, one hour went to two, two went to three, by the time burnout hit she was ready to study. After two hours of studying, she relented and went to her cello. Playing ballad after ballad until her fingers went numb.

Wednesday breathed in, the moon was out. Lights out was nearing. She resented a lot of things she summarized, thing for making her drag this instrument through the window was #1 on her list right now.

Wednesday did her night time routine, letting her hair flow free as she climbed into her bed. Night time was her least favorite time of day. Another reminder of Enid's absence.

She turned away from polar, sitting on the left side of her bed. Wednesday truly tried to sleep, but sleep was a luxury. So her eyes drifted for a few minutes before she turned to the plushie on her bed. Newly thefted from Yoko's room. She grabbed it, and immediately a tiny bit of Enid with her as she let sleep over take her.

-

The theft of the plushie worked. Wednesday truly hadn't been this comfortable in her room for a while. The next morning she woke early, got ready for the day and set out to see Eugene. Instead of the midday meal she decided she would partake in breakfast with him too. She stood outside the boy's side thinking nothing of the states until Eugene came into sight. She estimated that she was here for around an hour. He hustled over as soon as he saw her.

“Hey Wednesday, is something wrong?” Eugene asked sincerely. His eyes wide with curiosity. ‘Pugsley’  Wednesday thinks. She missed her brother oddly.

Wednesday tilted her head. “Not at all Eugene, I was wondering if you would like to partake in breakfast” she said plainly, an open invitation. “That's if you aren't busy”

Eugene's face shifted and his smile was ear to ear “are you kidding” his disbelief pulsating to a cheesy grin. “Let's go!” - the shorter boy took the lead and Wednesday followed. Wednesday found herself not minding the stares as she walked side by side with her fellow hummer.

They sat in relative silence, Eugene spoke plainly about their bees, his classes. Wednesday cherished his company, the silence, nothing was forced. Some conversation, When class began Wednesday nodded curtly and walked with Eugene to her class. She dumped her empty tray and ignored the glances in their direction.

Then lunch came and that was the same, and then the beekeeping club. This went on for a few days, every single night she hugged polar, every day she spent time with Eugene. She wrote her novel, she studied, she played her cello, she added exercise to her routine, a jog to get her blood pumping, knuckle push-ups, sit ups, a sharpened blade can cut anything.

Suddenly it was like any other day, she was at lunch with Eugene when he spoke about the underworld movies.

“You have to be careful with werewolves! They'll break you in half, if they don't cut you up instead”

When it left his mouth her eyes widened. She found herself wanting to laugh out loud at the prospect of Enid breaking in her half but she just smiled and shook her head.

Before they left, Wednesday had to say something.

“Eugene” Wednesday called out as he left the table. He sharply turned around. “Yeah Wednesday.”

She studied him, he reminded her so much of pugsley.

“You're a good friend.”

He laughed again.

“Thanks Wednesday, you’re the only one who’s ever stuck up for me”

She smiled as she left for class. The last time she smiled was Enid. This time was different, it was for herself.

After beekeeping she dismissed Eugene and went to her room, she wasn't jogging anymore. They were runs. She had to get ready. When she reached her room, or before she reached her room

Wednesday saw her.

“Enid” she spoke softly. Wednesday met her at the door.

She was still beautiful. Wednesday thought. It was a vain thought.

“Hi Wednesday, can I come in? Can we talk?”  Enid dressed in her purple nevermore outfit. Her pastel colors contrasting once again.

‘How had they ever worked?’ Wednesday thought. That's right They hadn't.

Enid stared at her, Wednesday did the same. Her heart thumped and thumped.

It’s because he's a boy isn't he…’

Her entire frame locked up not knowing what to say or do.

Suddenly Enid, probably sick of this exchange, spoke first.

“You know what I'm sorry for comi-” Enid said as she turned away.

Wednesday stopped her, her mind chastised her heart easily swayable by a blue eyed werewolf.

“No, come in.” She insisted as she opened the door with her key.

She didn't even wait for Enid to respond as she walked in. She walked and stood in the middle of her room and waited for her to come in.

She was so nervous for Enid to know that she hadn't done anything with Enid's old side of the room. But that would have to wait.

Enid stepped in, her eyes aloof as she took in the raven.

‘This was her place here at nevermore. Just as it became mine’

“Wow I like what you have done with the place” Enid said as she stepped closer.

Wednesday wanted to roll her eyes, Enid was teasing her about it being empty.

“I haven't done anything Enid. How can I help you”

Wednesday said honestly and straightforwardly. That did not catch her off guard.

Enid scoffed and laughed. “You haven't changed Wednesday”

“I've definitely changed Enid. Getting Dumped Sucked.” Wednesday said this coldy as she could muster.

The flash of guilt on Enid's face was not as rewarding as she had predicted, Wednesday regretted it the moment she said it. It appeared she still had strong feelings for the wolf.

“I know I'm sorry, I wanted to see you, I miss our friendship.” Enid replied as she took another step forward. Wednesday stood her ground.

“I missed you too,” Wednesday confessed honestly. She saw Enid smile. “But I didn't have the luxury of throwing that away for an ex.” She turned and looked away from Enid. Before she could continue this cage match. She saw polar sitting out in the open. Her eyes widened. She could not let her find out.

Wednesday stepped in front of the bear's direction, blocking Enid's view.

Enid walked to her. “I know I'm sorry, I shouldn't have been so stupid. I'm not with him anymore.”

Her heart thumped.

Stop it’ she internally growled at herself.

She looked at Enid. Her bright blue eyes staring at her again.

“When did you become so cruel?” Wednesday asked bluntly as she saw the gaze of Enid suddenly be taken aback.  “It doesn't suit you,” she added.

“What are you talking about?” Enid stepped forward, eyes irritable.

‘Defensive as ever’

“I'm not taking you back just because you and the snake boy got cold feet” Wednesday said as she crossed her arms.

Enid rolled her eyes. “I don't want you to take me back,” she offered. And Wednesday's traitorous heart sank a bit. “I just want us to have a chance at being friends again” the offer seemed genuine.

Wednesday hated staring into her bright blue eyes. Wednesday knew, She knew the odds of this being successful were slim to none. The odds were not in her favor because who could go back to being  just friends after what Enid and her had done together.

That was the ugly truth. She had a better chance of getting back together with Enid than staying friends.

“Do you deserve a chance?” she asked honestly. Enid rolled her eyes.

“Please don't make me beg.” Enid pleaded

“I won't, I asked you a question” Wednesday said as she stepped away from the bed.

Enid sighed. “I tore your heart out” Enid out her hands in her face. Hiding the shame. “I truthfully don't deserve it, but I'm asking for it anyway.”

Wednesday turned around so she didn't let Enid see her smile.

“What a Wednesday like answer”  Wednesday said as she scoffed. She had to give Enid credit. In a way she was proud. Wednesday also had to play up her dissatisfaction.

She walked to her window. Their former window, and stared out past the cellophane.

She stood in silence. She felt Enid's gaze stare so hard that it felt like she was staring through her.

She was about to turn around. “I need more ti-” when Wednesday was cut off.

“Polar?!” She heard Enid's shriek and her heart sank.

‘Shit’

In a blur she was holding the penguin, her current muse as well as her unconventional sleep aid.

“What is he doing here? I haven't seen him in forever”  Enid asked as she held the penguin by his shoulders.

Wednesday had to make something up.

“I don't know who polar is but that was a gift from Eugene.” Wednesday said as she walked towards Enid to retrieve him.

Acceptable. Her and Eugene were good friends, surely Enid had taken note of it.

Enid scoffed. “No he didn't, this is definitely polar, the bottom of his foot has my name on it. I saw that trick on Toy Story.” She lifted her foot and she saw Enid's name in white marker.

She cursed herself mentally for the times she skipped out on that movie on movie night.

Wednesday reached out to grab him. Enid pulled back. Wednesday recoiled as she saw those blue eyes shine at her. They were blue, big and round. They radiated one thing she couldn't stomach.

Pity

Suddenly she didn't want the penguin anymore.

“Just take him and go,” Wednesday said as she backed up. Those blue eyes softened.

Enid stepped forward. “No wait, here” she said as she was even closer now.

“Keep him.” She was suddenly offered, and Enid’s hand presented the stuffed animal. Wednesday stared back.

They were like this for a while. She stared.

Wednesday couldn't go back to not sleeping so she took polar back. Reluctantly.

“Thank you” Wednesday offered as she grabbed him.

Enid’s smile beamed at her. Wednesday felt her heart clinch, A bright smile, and then suddenly she turned and skipped away, reaching the door she opened it and just as she was about to leave she said

“Don't thank me, in exchange for keeping him you have to give me another chance at being friends again. No take-backsies.” Enid said as she shut the door.

Wednesday Friday Addams stood there in shock. Her heart was beating a mile a second. Enid had bested her fortitude. She looked down at the penguin, seeing the bright white marker on his foot. Her downfall.

'What had she done?
