Chapter 1: 1. Knowing

Chapter Text

They say falling is just an action and that no one can mentally feel like they’re falling apart. James was though, and Regulus seemed to be the only one who noticed. Though, Regulus couldn't blame those who didn't know. James was surprisingly good at hiding all the bad emotions he didn't think people would care about. Unfortunately for James, Regulus notices everything. For example, James’ lack of appetite, his aimless wandering at night, and the way his eyes seemed duller.

Never ask why Regulus was paying that close of attention to James Potter, of all people. He had no clue. Reg was bored and James was always doing something. So, James was easy to pay attention to. It’s not Regulus’ fault. James was just interesting. The kind of interesting that makes you wonder if they’re insane or just stupid, but Regulus chose not to dwell on that. At least James wasn’t named after a star.

It's been a week since Regulus started noticing the difference. It was strange. Regulus didn't notice a gradual build up like he did with his friends. It was like suddenly James’ mood switched and Reggie was the only one knowing that. He had theories of course as to why James’ mood switch was so sudden. Maybe, the walls the Gryffindor had built were crumbling. If so, Regulus is almost worried about what will happen if those walls fully come down.

Another theory was that Sirius, Lupin, and Pettigrew were causing trouble again and it backfired on James. It’s a possibility, but not a strong one. Especially because James is still hanging out with them. Like right now, they're laughing by the lake. No, Regulus is not a stalker. He was out here first!

The final theory was that James had a loss in the family. He assumed it was the least likely since Sirius wasn't acting differently too. Though, Regulus did debate this option for about an hour and a half. He felt stupid after he took into account that Sirius would also be visibly upset if someone of the Potter family died.

“Hey, Reg.” Regulus looks up instantly to see James Potter looking down at him. “Yes, Potter?” He mutters, almost annoyed that James is even by him. “You’ve been watching me.” James states simply and the Slytherin almost wants to strangle the boy for sounding so unconcerned. “No, I have not.” Regulus denies instantly. James laughs and sits next to him. Regulus scoots away and glares. “I didn't invite you to sit.” He says sharply. James laughs again. “You didn’t have to. I was going to sit anyway.” He says.

Regulus rolls his eyes. “Well, can I ask you to get the hell up and go sit somewhere else?” He snarks, annoyed. “Maybe politely, yes.” James says, grinning. Regulus groans and stands up. “Wait! Please. I'm sorry. I’ll leave.” James says quickly, standing up too and leaving the spot quickly. Regulus frowns. That's new. Normally, James would follow him around for the next hour. Okay, this is officially concerning now. Regulus almost feels bad, but at least he’s confirmed his thoughts. Something’s wrong with James Potter, but what?

Regulus decided to go with his 1st theory for now. Though, that hardly tells him what’s happening, just that it is happening. He’s confused as to why he cares at all, but whatever. It doesn’t really matter. Regulus sits back down at his spot, watching as James walks away and towards the tree by the lake. The tree has a branch that hangs over the water. It’s quite pretty to look at while the sun sets. Regulus watches as James climbs the tree and sits on the branch.

The next few minutes go like this; thinking, debating, snap!, “SHIT!”, SPLASH. Regulus groans internally and walks over to the water where James has just fallen into. It turns out that the branch wasn’t as sturdy as it looked. James broke it and well… you know the rest. Regulus
laughs as James surfaces and coughs, spluttering. Everyone around them is laughing. Regulus isn’t. How is he the only one who sees the tears?

Regulus offers his hand to James, who takes it hesitantly. He pulls James out of the water and leans in close to whisper. “Hide the tears, or they’ll laugh more. Trust me.” He murmurs gently, trying to keep his voice calm but firm enough to make sure James knows that he’s not being mocked. James listens, surprisingly enough. It shouldn’t be that easy for James to hide his tears, but it is. His face goes neutral for a second and then his typical bubbly personality comes back. He laughs with the crowd and jokes about it as Regulus is leaving.

Regulus waits until the crowd leaves before walking back over to James. “Come with me.” He says, not stopping his stride. James follows. That doesn't surprise Regulus. What does is the fact that James doesn't speak at all the entire walk. Eventually, Regulus stops in an empty classroom. He turns to James. “You were right. I have been watching you. Don't read into it. What's been going on with you? You’ve been acting different, like a kicked puppy. It’s concerning.” Regulus says, quickly. He keeps his expression calm and distant. James fakes a grin. “Nothing’s wrong, but it’s nice to know you care.” He says and then leaves quickly.

Regulus is left alone, intrigued and very determined.
