Chapter 2: Intro: First Sight

Chapter Text

PUCCA. FIRST PERSON.

"I've liked Garu for as long as I can remember...It started small, like a spark or maybe a sparkle... I remember the first time I saw him. He was fighting. The way he moved, all I remember were these four words: wind, fast, quiet, unstoppable. Watching him then, it felt like something inside me had clicked into place. He was just so... amazing..."

THIRD PERSON

The afternoon sun bathed the village in soft light, casting golden hues across rooftops and cobblestone streets. Pucca strolled aimlessly near the bamboo forest, humming a little tune to herself, her red dress swaying with each step. She had wandered farther than usual, her curiosity tugging her toward unfamiliar sights.

That's when she saw him.

A boy, older than her, maybe two or three years stood at the center of a clearing. His dark ninja attire hugged his frame, a crimson scarf draped around his neck. His black hair fell messily over his forehead, and his expression was calm, serious, and focused.

But it wasn't just him that caught her attention. It was the way he moved.

A group of masked ninjas lunged at him from the shadows, blades flashing in the sunlight. Pucca gasped and took a step back, her heart racing, but the boy didn't flinch. It's like he was expecting them all along. His sword sliced through the air, effortlessly parrying their attacks. He twisted and leaped with precision, taking down each opponent without breaking a sweat.

Pucca clutched her hands to her chest, her cheeks warming.
"Wow..." she whispered, stars practically sparkling in her eyes.

As the last ninja hit the ground, the boy calmly sheathed his sword, his movements as quiet and graceful as the wind.

Without thinking, Pucca sprinted toward him, excitement bubbling in her chest.
"That was amazing!" she blurted, her voice full of awe. "What's your name? I've never seen you before! You're so cool!"

The boy glanced at her, his dark eyes unreadable. He said nothing.

Pucca tilted her head, waiting for a response, but he simply turned, adjusting his scarf as he walked away.

"H-Hey! Wait!" she called, jogging after him. "Where are you going? Why aren't you saying anything?"

He continued walking in silence, heading toward a small house at the edge of the village. Pucca followed him all the way to the front door, her questions spilling out in rapid succession.

"Do you live here? How did you get that cool sword?! Are you a REAL ninja? Where's your parents?"

He stepped inside, closing the door gently behind him without a single word.

Pucca stood there, blinking in confusion. "Why doesn't he talk...?" she whispered to herself.

Uncle Dumpling chuckled, wiping his hands on his apron. He softly smiles at his niece, "Ah, that must be Garu."

"Garu?" Pucca repeated, her eyes lighting up. After meeting the mystery boy, she returned to her uncle's noodle shop.

Linguini nodded. " He's taken a vow of silence. Hasn't spoken a word since he was a kid."

"A vow of silence?" Pucca's brow furrowed. "Why?"

"It's part of his training as a ninja," Ho explained, flipping a wok. "He's sworn to silence until... well, until the time is right."

Pucca blinked, her mind racing. A vow of silence? That's... so cool.

A grin spread across her face, her heart fluttering just at the thought of him.

For the next few days, she kept seeing him around the village. Once, she spotted him carrying some herbs near the market. Her eyes went wide, and she couldn't help but follow him, walking slowly behind. He didn't notice her, but she couldn't take her eyes off him.

Then another day, she found him in the woods, practicing with his sword. She hid behind a tree, peeking out to watch him. He moved so fast, like a shadow. Pucca giggled to herself, feeling a little shy.

She didn't know why, but something about him made her heart feel funny.

A few days later, she saw him near her family's noodle shop. Her heart skipped a beat. She jumped off the counter, waving at him. "Hiiiii, Garu! You're sooo cool!"

He just looked at her, then turned and kept walking.

Pucca's smile didn't fade. She liked how quiet and mysterious he was. He was different from everyone else. She wanted to talk to him, to know more about him, but he never said anything back.

; It didn't matter. She'd keep watching, keep following him, until one day, maybe, he'd notice her too.

Chapter 3: Chapter 1: The Silent Ninja

Chapter Text

Pucca wandered along the narrow paths, her small feet scuffing the dirt. She knew exactly where she was going, her heart led her. Her eyes darted to the familiar figure just ahead. There he was. At the same spot. Garu.

He moved like a shadow, swift and silent, his red scarf fluttering in the breeze. His steps were purposeful, almost too serious for a boy his age. He always carried an air of mystery, his calm behavior like a puzzle she desperately wanted to solve. No words, no greetings just silence. But something about him kept pulling her in. Pucca hugged the wall of a nearby building, peeking out cautiously as Garu walked through the village square. Her heart thumped in her chest. She wanted to talk to him, to say something! Anything! But every time she tried, the words tangled up in her throat. He was always so focused, so distant.

Why doesn't he ever speak? She knew the answer now. Her uncles had told her about Garu's vow of silence. A sacred promise to remain mute in his dedication to becoming the strongest ninja. She found it fascinating. It only made her more curious. Her gaze lingered on him as he stopped near the fountain, checking his surroundings before pulling out a scroll from his satchel. He studied it with furrowed brows, oblivious to the world around him or maybe just choosing to ignore it.

"Oh! Now's my chance," Pucca whispered to herself.

Gathering her courage, she took a deep breath and stepped out from behind the wall. But as soon as she was close enough to speak, Garu turned and walked away. Pucca blinked in surprise, standing frozen for a moment. Did he notice her? Did he purposely walk away, or was it just bad timing?

Her feet started moving before her mind caught up. She followed him at a careful distance, watching as he headed toward the bamboo forest. The golden light filtered through the tall stalks, casting long shadows. It felt like stepping into another world. A quiet, secret world where Garu seemed perfectly at home. Pucca slowed down, not wanting to scare him off. She admired the way he moved with such ease, blending into his surroundings like a true ninja. It was... mesmerizing. Her cheeks flushed slightly.

He's so cool...

But how could she get close to someone who lived in a world of silence? She thought about saying something again but quickly dismissed the idea. Talking felt out of place around him-like breaking an unspoken rule. So instead, she kept following, hoping that, somehow, he'd acknowledge her presence.

Garu stopped suddenly. Pucca nearly bumped into a tree trying to avoid being seen. He tilted his head slightly, listening to the wind. His sharp eyes scanned the trees around him, but if he noticed her, he gave no sign. He simply adjusted his scarf and continued walking.

Her shoulders dropped in disappointment. This was harder than she thought.

Still, she refused to give up.

Pucca's eyes stayed fixed on him, her thoughts swirling. She wasn't the type to give up easily—everyone in the village knew that. Whether it was delivering noodles or chasing down stray cats, she always finished what she started.

But Garu? He was a different challenge entirely.

Determined not to lose sight of him, she darted from tree to tree, keeping her footsteps light. She was no ninja, but years of running around the village had made her quick on her feet.

The bamboo thinned out, revealing a small clearing where Garu stopped. He crouched low, scanning the ground as if searching for something. Pucca watched from a distance, her curiosity bubbling up again. What could he be looking for?

Suddenly, Garu leaped into the air, his hands slicing through the wind in a series of precise movements. He twisted and landed with perfect balance, his eyes sharp and focused. He practiced his routine in silence, each move fluid and graceful, yet powerful.

Pucca's jaw dropped. He wasn't just cool—he was amazing.

Her heart swelled with admiration, but it quickly turned into frustration. How could someone so incredible be so impossible to approach?

As Garu finished his training, Pucca finally decided to take a bold step forward. Her palms felt sweaty, and her legs were trembling, but she was done hiding in the shadows.

She marched into the clearing, determined to get his attention.

Garu noticed her immediately. His eyes narrowed in confusion, but he said nothing, his expression unreadable.

"Hi," Pucca said softly, waving. Her voice felt small in the quiet of the forest.

He stared at her for a long moment, then turned and started walking away without a word.

Pucca's heart sank. It wasn't like she expected a full conversation... she knew he couldn't speak, but the way he dismissed her stung more than she'd thought it would.

Her hands balled into fists. No. She wasn't giving up. Not yet.

"Hey!" she called out, her voice firmer this time. "Wait!"

Garu paused but didn't turn around.

Pucca got increasingly frustrated. She bolted to him while reaching out to tap his shoulder, but just before her fingers could touch him, he spun around with surprising speed. His expression was stern, almost warning her not to push any further.

Pucca, flustered held her fingers to her face. She looked to the side unsure what to say. For a second, she hesitated. Maybe she'd gone too far.

But then something flickered in his eyes—not annoyance, but... curiosity.

Taking a step back, Pucca quietly said, "I just wanted to say... you're really good at what you do." She clasped her hands together behind her and made eye contact with him.

Garu blinked, clearly surprised by her words. He tilted his head slightly as if trying to decide whether she was serious.

The silence stretched between them, heavy and awkward. Pucca bit her lip, unsure of what to do next.

But then, to her surprise, Garu gave her a tiny nod before turning and walking away again.

It wasn't much. Barely any acknowledgment, but it was enough for Pucca. Her heart soared as she watched him disappear into the trees.

A smile spread across her face. For some reason, this encounter gave her confidence.

The sun was just beginning to set, casting a soft orange glow over the village of Sooga. Pucca skipped along the cobblestone path, the excitement of meeting Garu still bubbling inside her. She had spent the entire afternoon thinking about him—his serious face, the way he moved with such grace when practicing his sword techniques. Every little detail made her heart race. But there was one thing she realized just as she approached her home: she hadn't told Garu her name.

Her eyes widened as she stopped in her tracks. Oh no! I totally forgot! How is he supposed to know who I am?!

She quickly turned around and ran back, her footsteps light but determined.

Garu, who had been silently watching the clouds drift by, barely noticed Pucca darting towards him. She stopped in front of him, breathing heavily from her sprint.

"Ah! Garu- I-I forgot to tell you something!" Pucca panted, looking up at him with wide, innocent eyes. "My name is Pucca!"

Garu blinked at her as if he didn't quite understand what was going on.

Pucca grinned, proud of her sudden realization. "You can call me Pucca!!"

' ; Garu's face never changed, but Pucca didn't mind. '

Chapter 4: Chapter 2: Determined

Chapter Text

Pucca wasn't one to give up easily. After all, she'd spent plenty of time watching Garu from afar, hoping he'd notice her. But now? It was time to take action. If Garu didn't want to come to her, she'd go to him, again and again if she had to. The plan was simple: help Garu with his everyday tasks, impress him with her skills, and maybe, just maybe, he'd smile her way.

Her first attempt? Cooking.

Pucca stood in the kitchen, stirring a pot of her signature spicy noodles. This'll get his attention for sure! she thought. The smell filled the room, warm and inviting... and just a little overpowering. She grinned and grabbed the bowl, practically skipping out the door to find him. Garu was outside, practicing his sword moves in the backyard, when Pucca arrived. She stood quietly for a moment, admiring how cool and focused he looked.

She stepped closer. "Garu!"

He froze mid-swing, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. Pucca held up the bowl with a beaming smile. "I made this for you!" Before he could react, she was already shoving the chopsticks into his hand. Garu gave her a wary glance but cautiously took a bite. His eyes widened as the fiery heat kicked in. "Good, right?" Pucca asked innocently.

Garu nodded stiffly, his face slowly turning red. Way spicier than expected, he thought, struggling not to cough. Pucca clapped her hands in excitement. "Great! I'll cook for you every day!" Garu tried to back away, but Pucca was already on her next mission.

"Cooking's just the start!" she said, bouncing beside him. "I can help you with anything, Garu!"

The next day, Pucca waited for him outside the market, determined to help with his grocery shopping. The plan was simple; grab the items, impress Garu, and stroll out together like a perfect team....Or a perfect couple! Pucca blushed at the idea. Giggling, she skipped her way inside the market. But things didn't go quite as expected. "Don't worry, I'll carry everything!" Pucca said, snatching the list from Garu's hands. Before he could stop her, she had darted down the aisles, grabbing vegetables and spices at lightning speed.

Moments later, she reappeared, her arms overflowing with bags. "Got everything!" she declared proudly. Except... half of it wasn't even on the list. Garu facepalmed, but Pucca wasn't discouraged. "Oops! Well, we'll eat like royalty tonight!" she said cheerfully, plopping the bags into his arms.

Later that week, Pucca tried helping with his laundry.

"Don't worry! I'm an expert at this!"

Garu blinked in confusion as Pucca stuffed his clothes into the washer, dumping an alarming amount of soap in with them. Minutes later, bubbles spilled out from every crack and crevice of the washing machine. "Oh..uhm..." Pucca muttered, slipping on a puddle. "Ah!"

Garu sighed, grabbing a mop.

By the end of the week, Pucca was still as determined as ever. If helping with chores didn't win him over, maybe a good old-fashioned chase would. She waited until Garu was on his way home, casually walking down the path. Then, with a mischievous grin, she bolted toward him.

"Tag, you're it!"

Garu's eyes widened. He didn't wait to find out what that meant, he sprinted in the opposite direction. Pucca followed closely, laughing as she weaved through the trees after him. "Garuuuuu!" Pucca increased her speed. Garu looked behind himself to see a terrifying Pucca bolting straight at him. The sight made him fall over and hit the ground. Pucca giggled, "Oh Garu! You're supposed to chase me, not me chase you!"

The next morning, Pucca spotted Garu sharpening his sword in the courtyard. His focused expression made her heart flutter. This is my chance to impress him! she thought.

She skipped over her hands behind her back. "Hiiii, Garu! Need help?"

Garu shook his head and continued sharpening. The soft scraping sound echoed through the courtyard. Pucca leaned in, watching carefully. "I can make it super sharp," she offered. Before Garu could protest, she grabbed the sword and gave it a dramatic swipe against a large boulder behind them. In the process, she made the boulder crack and crumble, the sword wasn't spared from her either, facing a small crack on the tip.

Pucca froze. "Oops."

Garu gave her an exasperated look. He walked over to retrieve his sword, but Pucca wasn't done.

"Wait! I'll get a new sword for you!" She bolted to the nearby village, went to their blacksmith and stole one of their swords, hurrying back to Garu, she appeared in front of him with a brand new sword, presenting it as a perfectly wrapped gift. For a split second, their eyes met. Garu quickly took the gift, face flushed, and turned away, hoping to escape whatever madness would come next.

Later that day, Pucca tried again, this time with a rope trap, and she was going to catch him and keep him as hers. She set the trap near a narrow path and waited. Soon enough, Garu walked by, completely unaware. Pucca pulled the rope, and within seconds, Garu was caught and dangling upside down from a tree branch. "Haha! Gotcha!" Pucca giggled, running up to him.

Garu crossed his arms, glaring at her, but Pucca wasn't fazed. She leaned in close, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. "Since you're stuck, that means I get a reward!" Garu's eyes widened in panic. He tried to wiggle free, but the ropes were too tight. Pucca giggled and kissed him on the cheek.

"Got you again!" she said, laughing as she skipped away.

Garu finally broke free and landed on his feet, his face burning red. He looked around to make sure no one had seen the whole thing. This girl's unstoppable, he thought, watching Pucca twirl off into the distance.

; Garu felt his cheek, 'she's annoying,' he thought to himself... at that time.

Chapter 5: Chapter 3: The Impossible Chase

Chapter Text

The sun hung lazily over Sooga Village, its golden light casting a warm glow over rooftops and trees. A breeze whispered through the streets, carrying the scent of fresh noodles from the Goh-Rong restaurant. It should've been a peaceful morning. It could've been if Pucca weren't already lurking nearby.

Garu tightened the strap on his katana and took a cautious step outside. His senses were sharp, trained to pick up the slightest movement, the faintest sound. But even with all his ninja training, he somehow missed her.

"Hiiii, Garu!"

He froze. Slowly, he turned his head. There she was half hiding behind a rock, waving with that familiar smile. No, Garu thought. Not today. He picked up speed. So did she. "Where are you going?" Pucca asked innocently, jogging alongside him. "Can I come? Pleaseee?" Garu ignored her, sheathing his katana. "Training?" she guessed. "Oooh! Can I train with you? Hehe!" Garu shot her a glance, then darted off, leaping onto the nearest rooftop. It's time to end this.

Garu sprinted across the rooftops, his feet moving with precision and speed. He zig-zagged, leaping from one house to the next, throwing in sharp turns to confuse her. He glanced back. No sign of her. Finally, he'd managed to--

"Garuuuu!"

Pucca stood ahead of him on the next roof, waving. Garu stopped in his tracks, eyes wide in disbelief. How does she keep doing that? Without a word, he spun on his heel and jumped to the ground, racing toward the village outskirts. The forest was his next refuge. Garu weaved between the trees, his footsteps silent as he dodged roots and branches. The wind rushed past him, carrying away the sounds of the village. He jumped over a fallen log, landing perfectly and pressing his back against a tree. He listened. Nothing.

Breathing a small sigh of relief, Garu turned around--

"Garu!" Pucca's face popped out from behind the same tree. "Are we playing hide-and-seek? I love that game!" He stumbled back, shaking his head in disbelief. This... this is impossible. "You're really good at running," Pucca added, clapping. Garu took off again, his feet pounding against the forest floor. The sound of rushing water filled Garu's ears as he reached the waterfall. Without hesitation, he jumped across the rocks, landing on the other side. He turned back, watching the current rush past. There was no way she could follow him across that.

But then he saw her. Pucca floating down the river on a log, waving cheerfully.

"This is fun!" she shouted. "I love the waterfall!" Garu slapped a hand to his forehead. She's not human. She's a force of nature. By now, Garu was desperate. His legs burned, and his lungs begged for air, but he refused to stop. He made his way to the hidden cave deep in the mountains, a place only a true ninja would know about. He pushed a boulder over the entrance and collapsed against it, panting. She'll never find me here, he thought. Finally, peace.

He stood up and walked deeper into the cave, letting the cool air calm his racing heart. He could already feel the sweet relief of solitude.

Until he saw a soft orange glow up ahead.

Garu froze. No. It couldn't be.

He stepped forward cautiously, his eyes adjusting to the dim light. There, sitting by a campfire, was Pucca, happily roasting marshmallows.

"Garrruuu!!!" she said, holding out a stick. "Want one?"

Garu stared at her, his brain short circuiting. He didn't even have the energy to be angry anymore. How? How is this possible?!

He dropped to the ground, utterly defeated. She'd beaten him. Again.

; Pucca plopped down beside him and kissed him on the cheek. "Mwah!" Garu having no strength left in this body allowed Pucca to keep kissing him. "Mwah!"

Chapter 6: Chapter 4: The Vow

Chapter Text

The morning breeze swept through the quiet village of Sooga, carrying the scent of freshly cooked noodles from Pucca's family shop. Usually, her laughter filled the air as she zipped around delivering bowls of steaming udon, but today was different. Today, Pucca had made a decision a serious one. She would no longer speak. Not a single word.

It had all started with Garu. His vow of silence intrigued her, pulling her deeper into his mysterious world. No matter how many times she tried to get close, Garu always remained distant, as if wrapped in an invisible veil of secrets. He never spoke a word, yet his presence alone said so much. Maybe, Pucca thought, if I stop talking too, he'll notice me.

Her uncles, Dumpling, Ho, and Linguini, stood behind the counter, watching Pucca with raised eyebrows. Dumpling scratched his head, confused. "Pucca, aren't you going to greet the customers today?" Pucca simply smiled and shook her head. Ho leaned in, lowering his voice. "Is she sick or something?"

"Nah," Linguini replied, eyeing Pucca suspiciously. "She's up to something." They watched as Pucca silently twirled around the restaurant, gesturing instead of speaking. At one point, she grabbed a notepad and drew a crude stick figure with spiky hair. Below it, she wrote: Garu.

Then she giggled. The three uncles exchanged knowing glances. "She's doing this for that boy, isn't she?" Dumpling said, crossing his arms. "She's taken a vow of silence... just like him!"

  Ho chuckled. "Ah, young love."

"Adorable," Linguini said with a grin, "but weird."

Pucca continued her wordless mission around the shop, confident that her silence would impress Garu. But as the day wore on, it became clear that life without words was more difficult than she'd expected. The townspeople couldn't help but take note of Pucca's unusual behavior. At the marketplace, where she usually chatted with vendors and offered warm greetings, she simply nodded and smiled.

"Pucca, you've gone quiet today!" the fishmonger called out. Pucca waved but didn't respond. The baker leaned out of his shop. "Lost your voice, dear?" Pucca mimicked zipping her lips and pointed towards the distant hills where Garu often trained. "Ohhhh," the baker said with a chuckle. "Trying to be like him, huh?" Whispers spread throughout the village. Pucca's gone silent... just like Garu. Some thought it was sweet; others found it insulting. But everyone agreed on one thing: Pucca was determined to be Garu.

Days turned into weeks. Pucca's vow of silence remained unbroken. Every gesture, every smile, every glance spoke louder than words. She followed Garu from a distance, watching him train.

Her thoughts often wandered to him when she sat by the river, tossing stones into the water. Even in her dreams, Garu's quiet strength haunted her.

One evening, as Pucca was cleaning the tables in the noodle shop, her uncles sat her down.

"Pucca," Dumpling began gently, "we know you're doing this for Garu, but do you understand why he doesn't speak?" Pucca tilted her head, curious. Linguini leaned in, his voice softer. "He took a vow of silence for a reason. It's not just to be mysterious. It's part of his path as a ninja. His family has a history of honor to protect, promises to keep." Ho nodded. "His father was a great ninja. Some say Garu took the vow to restore that honor, to prove himself."

Pucca's eyes widened. She had always admired Garu, but hearing this story made her respect him even more. It wasn't just a quirk it was part of who he was. She wonders if Garu thinks of this as copying him, as an insult to make fun of him, or even his father! Still, her admiration only grew stronger. If Garu could carry the weight of such a vow, then so could she.

The next morning, Pucca stood in front of her mirror, tying her hair into her signature buns. She stared at her reflection for a moment, then smiled. This vow of silence will be my own little promise, she thought. To be by his side... quietly.

At the marketplace, the villagers continued to marvel at her persistence.

"Still quiet?" the baker asked. Pucca nodded, giving a thumbs up. "She's got more discipline than most of us," the blacksmith said. "That girl's got spirit." As Pucca wandered through the village, she caught a glimpse of Garu training on the hilltop. Her heart skipped a beat. He moved with such grace and focus, each movement calculated and precise. She couldn't help but watch, completely captivated.

For a brief moment, Garu paused and glanced in her direction. Pucca froze. Did he notice me? But before she could react, Garu turned back to his training, as if nothing had happened. Her cheeks flushed, but she didn't mind. She knew it would take time. After all, a silent promise wasn't something easily broken and she was determined to keep hers.

The next day, Pucca resumed her deliveries around the village. Normally, she'd pass Garu and yell, "Hey, Garu!" as she waved with her usual enthusiasm. But now, she simply smiled and gave him a small wave without saying a word.

At first, Garu didn't think much of it. He figured it was a rare stroke of luck, a moment of peace without the constant chatter. But as the hours ticked by, something about it gnawed at him. He waited for her to speak, bracing himself for her usual high-pitched greeting, but it never came.

By the second day, it felt even stranger. Pucca appeared again during her delivery route, this time bolting straight up to him. Garu stiffened, preparing to sidestep her usual hug, but Pucca didn't hug him. She just stood there, smiling at him silently.

Garu blinked, feeling thrown off. Why isn't she talking? His eyes narrowed as he tried to piece it together. Is she... okay?

He waited for her to say something, anything! But the silence dragged on. Pucca simply continued to smile, her dark eyes sparkling with that familiar mischievous energy.

It hit him then: She's not just quiet. She's deliberately not talking.

His heart skipped a beat at the thought. Is she... doing the same thing I'm doing?

For a fleeting moment, Garu's mask of calm cracked. His mind raced as he tried to recall everything he knew about her.

She's always been loud, always full of energy... Why would she stop talking? His stomach twisted with an unfamiliar feeling.

He glanced back at her, studying her face carefully. There was no sadness in her expression, just that same determined smile. But still... something about it felt personal, almost intentional.

Garu's eyes widened. She's copying my vow.

The realization hit him harder than any punch or kick he'd ever taken. Why would she do that? he thought, more confused than ever.

Before he could figure it out, Pucca gave him one final wave and skipped away, leaving him standing in stunned silence.

As he resumed his walk back to his training ground, he couldn't shake the thought from his head. Why does it matter?  he told himself. It doesn't matter... right?

But the more he tried to push the thought away, the more persistent it became.

Does she not know I'm doing this for honor? Garu scanned the area. She just simply doesn't understand, or-

His heart thumped uncomfortably in his chest. Does that girl like me? She's not talking just for me?

For the first time in a long while, Garu found himself completely distracted during his training. No amount of meditation could settle the odd mix of emotions swirling in his head.

This vow is supposed to give me peace... he thought grimly, staring at the sunset. But why does it feel like I've lost something instead? Why do I wish to hear that girl speak?

; And with that unsettling question weighing on him, Garu knew one thing for certain, he couldn't stop thinking about her. '

Chapter 7: Chapter 5: Jealousy

Chapter Text

Pucca sat by the stream near the village, her legs dangling lazily over the edge. She was lost in thought, her eyes wandering across the path ahead, until they locked onto Garu. He was walking with a girl she'd never seen before, a beautiful girl. Looked to be a year older than Pucca. Swirly red cheeks, braided pigtails, and heart-shaped lips. She and Garu.....they were... laughing together?

Pucca blinked, her chest tightening. Garu didn't laugh. He barely smiled. Yet here he was, walking side by side with this new girl like they'd been friends forever.

The girl turned toward Garu and gestured toward the large building in front of them, a dojo. The sign above it read Turtle Training Hall, and an older man stood at the door, waiting for them with a warm smile. Garu nodded silently and followed the girl inside without so much as a glance in Pucca's direction.

Her lips pressed into a tight line. Who is she?

Jealousy bubbled in her chest, unfamiliar and unpleasant. She didn't even understand why it made her so upset. She didn't own Garu. He wasn't hers... but that didn't stop her from feeling like someone had stolen something precious. From. Her.

For the first time since taking her vow of silence, Pucca wanted to speak, to march up to that girl and demand an explanation. Instead, she clenched her fists, confidence settling in her heart. She would figure out who this girl was.. quietly.

Pucca made her way toward the Turtle Training Hall, her curiosity outweighing her frustration. As she peeked through the open door, she saw the girl, standing in the center of the dojo, holding a katana. She spun it gracefully, her movements sharp and precise. Garu and another boy with wild hair and ripped clothes stood nearby, watching her demonstration.

Pucca's eyes narrowed. So, she's a swordswoman?

The girl noticed Pucca at the door and lowered her sword with a curious smile. "Hi there!!!" she called out, wiping sweat from her forehead. "Are you here to train too?"

Pucca shook her head but stepped inside cautiously, keeping her eyes on Garu. He glanced at her, his expression unreadable, then turned back to his training partner without saying a word.

"I'm Ching," the girl introduced herself. "My dad runs this dojo. You must be Pucca, I've seen you around the village!!" She leaned in with a suggestive grin. "You're always following Garu..., right?"

Pucca froze, her cheeks heating up. She crossed her arms and gave a defiant nod.

Ching laughed. "Haha!! I think it's cute. Garu's not exactly a talker, though, is he?" She looked over at him, then back at Pucca. "Honestly, he's like that with everyone. Even me and I knew him for a long time."

Pucca tilted her head, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. Ching didn't seem like she was lying, but... something about how easily she talked to Garu still irked her.

Pucca sighed, and she gave a Are you too close....? look towards Ching.

Ching blinked in confusion before laughing again. "Oh! No, no, not at all. We just train together sometimes. My dad teaches him martial arts. That's it." She paused, studying Pucca's expression.

"Wait... are you jealous?"

Pucca quickly shook her head, but the redness in her cheeks betrayed her. She tried to brush it off with a wave of her hand, but Ching wasn't letting it go.

"Aww, you are jealous!" Ching teased, crossing her arms with a knowing smile. "You've got nothing to worry about!! Garu doesn't have any kind of interest in me and vice versa for myself!" She started walking back into the dojo, "Bye Pucca!! You could come in whenever you want!!"

Pucca didn't fully relax. Something inside her whispered that maybe Ching wasn't interested in Garu, but it didn't change the fact that Garu seemed... different around her. More relaxed, more open. Why isn't he like that with me?

The next day, Pucca marched up the path toward the dojo, her eyes set on her target. She was going to confront this Ching girl and figure out exactly what was going on between her and Garu. She didn't believe a word she said yesterday.

The memory of Garu standing beside Ching burned in her mind. Why doesn't he ever stand next to me like that? she thought, her fists clenched tightly at her sides. She felt her face heat up just remembering how they seemed so at ease with each other.

As she approached the dojo, she spotted Ching sitting on the front steps, chatting with Abyo. She has met him before, an energetic, stubborn boy who has an addiction to tearing his shirt off. Pucca has noticed Garu and Abyo are close friends. The loud, cocky boy leaned back on his elbows, his signature ripped gi barely clinging to his shoulders.

"Hey, Pucca!" Abyo called out, grinning from ear to ear. "You here to train too?"

Pucca ignored him, her eyes locked on Ching. Abyo raised an eyebrow and sat up straighter. "Uh oh... someone looks mad." Ching noticed Pucca's intense glare and smiled nervously. "Pucca! Hi! Did you come here to train?" Pucca didn't answer. Instead, she folded her arms and tapped her foot impatiently, her expression clearly saying We need to talk.

Ching blinked, then stood up, brushing dirt off her skirt. "Um... okay? What's wrong?"

Pucca jabbed a finger at her, then pointed toward the dojo where she had seen her and Garu together the day before. She mimicked holding hands and raised an eyebrow, her silent accusation loud and clear.

Ching's eyes widened. "Oh, nonono!" she said, waving her hands frantically. "I told you yesterday Pucca, I don't like Garu and he doesn't like me! It's not like that at all! Garu and I are just training partners. That's it!"

Abyo burst out laughing. "Wait a second... Pucca, are you jealous?" He pointed at her, his grin widening. "Oh, man! This is hilarious!"

Pucca turned to glare at Abyo, her cheeks burning red. She stomped her foot in frustration, then picked him up and threw him across the area.

"AAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!" Abyo screamed.

Pucca tapped her foot again, waiting for Ching to explain herself further. Ching sighed and walked closer. "Look, Pucca... I know how you feel. But I'm not interested in Garu. He's a great friend, but that's it. I'm actually more into... well..." She glanced at where Pucca threw Abyo for a split second, her cheeks turning pink. "Never mind."

Ching noticed the concern softening from Pucca's face, and with a cheerful smile, she leaned forward. "Pucca, you don't need to worry about me liking Garu. He's more like a brother than anything else. Besides," Ching added with a sly grin, "I've got my eyes on someone else."

At that moment, her pet chicken, Won, fluttered onto her head, perching comfortably as if it was her rightful place. Pucca stared at the bird before giggling silently, her earlier tension melting away. Ching laughed too, scratching Won's head fondly. "Oh, and meet Won! She goes everywhere with me. Isn't she adorable?"

Pucca nodded enthusiastically, giving the chicken a soft pat. "Now, let's grab some tea and talk about more interesting things, like boys." Ching winked, linking her arm with Pucca's as they strolled down the street.

As they sipped their drinks, Ching casually mentioned her little crush. "Honestly, Abyo is kinda cute... but don't you dare tell him!" Pucca raised an eyebrow playfully but stayed silent, listening attentively as Ching rambled about Abyo's flashy moves and how he ripped his shirt all the time.

Little did they know, that across the street, Abyo and Garu stood watching them. Abyo leaned against the wall, his usual cocky grin spreading across his face. "Those girls are definitely talking about how cool I am!"

Garu rolled his eyes, his gaze lingering on Pucca a bit longer than usual. He wasn't sure why, but something about seeing her smile with Ching made him feel oddly... relieved. Abyo smirked, nudging Garu. "Let's go before they catch us spying. You owe me a sparring match, man." Garu gave a small nod, turning to follow Abyo, but not before glancing back at Pucca one last time.

'   For a brief moment, their eyes met, and Pucca's smile grew just a little wider. '

Chapter 8: Chapter 6: Start of a New Friendship

Chapter Text

The village air buzzed with its usual energy as Pucca sat on the stone steps of the noodle shop, tapping her chin thoughtfully. She glanced up at the sky, her mind wandering to him, Garu. Her heart gave a little flutter at the thought of his serious expression, his graceful movements during training...

"Pucca!" Ching's voice snapped her out of her daydream. With Won perched proudly on her head, Ching skipped toward her, eyes full of mischief. "I've got the perfect plan to get Garu to notice you!"

Pucca perked up immediately, her eyes wide with curiosity.

"We're gonna figure out exactly how he feels about you," Ching said with a sly grin. "And who knows, maybe we'll even nudge him into saying something!" Pucca clapped her hands together, nodding eagerly.

"Step one: Let's spy on him while he's training!" Ching declared, grabbing Pucca's hand and dragging her toward the dojo. "I'll talk to him while you watch. If he likes you, it'll totally show in his face." Ching crouched behind a ridiculously narrow pole, while Pucca hid awkwardly behind a thin bush. Won stood on the ground in front of them, acting as their "lookout," though she seemed more interested in pecking at the dirt. They peeked around the corner of the dojo courtyard, where Garu was practicing his kata. His movements were swift and precise, each kick and strike like poetry in motion.

Ching grinned mischievously and whispered, "Okay, I'll talk to him. Watch his body language!"

Pucca nodded, her heart thudding nervously in her chest. Ching strolled toward Garu, hands clasped behind her back. "Hey, Garu!" she greeted him with a bright smile. "Sooo... what do you think of Pucca?" Garu froze mid strike, his eyes darting toward Ching in surprise. His heart gave an unexpected lurch at the mention of Pucca's name.

Pucca? Garu thought, his pulse quickening.

He glanced sideways, catching a glimpse of Pucca trying to blend into the bush. She looked adorable, her face half hidden, eyes full of anticipation. Ching raised an eyebrow, waiting for his response. What is she doing here? Garu wondered, his heart racing even faster. Why did Ching ask me that?

He quickly turned away, resuming his training, but his movements slowed, his focus faltering. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't shake the image of Pucca from his mind. Ching's eyes lit up. "Ohoho, interesting!" she teased. "You didn't deny it." Garu swallowed, keeping his face neutral. Don't react. Stay calm, he told himself, but his heart had other plans.

After their little mission, Pucca and Ching collapsed onto the grass near the dojo, catching their breath. Won fluttered onto Ching's lap, nestling herself comfortably. "Okay, that didn't exactly go as planned," Ching admitted, stroking Won's feathers. "But did you see how he froze? He totally likes you. He just doesn't know how to say it."

Pucca blinked, her eyes hopeful but unsure.

"Trust me," Ching said with a confident nod. "Boys are weird about their feelings. Garu's probably too shy to admit it, but it's written all over his face. We'll get him to open up eventually." Pucca smiled softly and gave Ching a big hug, instantly feeling lighter. "And from now on," Ching declared, "we're a team. I'll help you win over Garu, and you'll help me figure out this whole... Abyo situation."

Pucca tilted her head in confusion.

Ching blushed slightly, glancing toward the dojo. "Yeah, it's weird. Every time I see him, my heart does this fluttery thing." She pressed a hand to her chest dramatically. "It's probably nothing." Pucca raised an eyebrow. Nothing? She highly doubted that.

Won flapped her wings and flew onto Ching's head, her usual spot, making Ching laugh.
"You know," Ching said, leaning back on her hands, "I've always wanted a best friend who'd join me on weird and fun adventures!! Most people think I'm a little too much..." She glanced at Pucca with a shy smile.

Pucca tilted her head in confusion, then gently nudged Ching's shoulder and gave her a thumbs up. "You think I'm just the right amount of much?" Ching giggled. "I knew I liked you!" Pucca grinned, quickly grabbing a stick and drawing a heart in the dirt. Ching gasped. "A heart? Aww, are you saying you love me already?"

Pucca hugged her tightly, resting her head on Ching's shoulder. Won flapped her wings and flew down to Pucca's lap, clucking happily. "See? Even Won loves you!" Ching said with a laugh. "You're stuck with us now. Pinky swear, we'll always be best friends?"

Pucca extended her pinky, and they sealed their promise with a giggle. "Okay!!!!" Ching said, standing up and brushing off her skirt. "But next time, we're going to come up with the craziest plan ever to get Garu's attention. You in?" Pucca gave her a determined nod, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

The two lay back in the grass, laughing and chatting, already dreaming up their next wild adventure. From the shadows, Garu watched Pucca and Ching talking under the tree. Abyo stood beside him, arms crossed casually.

"What do you think they're plotting now?" Abyo asked with a grin, nudging Garu.

Garu didn't answer, his eyes focused on Pucca. His heart gave that strange thump again, the same one it had given when Ching mentioned her earlier. Why do I feel like this when I see her? he wondered. Why can't I just... ignore it? Abyo leaned in closer. "Hey, you good? You're staring."

Garu quickly turned his head away, his face heating up. Get it together, he told himself. It's just Pucca...

But deep down, a small part of him wasn't so sure anymore.

The sun was beginning to set, casting a soft orange glow across the village. Pucca and Ching sat by the riverbank, dipping their toes in the cool water. Won perched comfortably on Ching's head, ruffling her feathers every so often. '

Chapter 9: Chapter 7: Protect me Garu!

Chapter Text

Pucca sat at a table in the noodle shop, twirling a chopstick in her fingers while Ching brainstormed ideas.

"Okay," Ching said, tapping her chin. "You want Garu to notice you, right? What if... we fake a dangerous situation? Garu will have no choice but to rush to your rescue!" Pucca's eyes lit up. She loved the sound of that. Ching grinned. "We'll need a villain, though. Someone dramatic, bold, and not afraid to go all out." Before Pucca could even wonder who that might be, Abyo burst through the door, mid-shirt rip. "Did someone say dramatic?" Abyo jumps in the air, continuing his shirt rip, "HIIIIYEAH!".

"Perfect timing," Ching said. "Abyo, how would you like to be a bad guy for a little... experiment?" Abyo crossed his arms. "A bad guy, huh? Easy. What's the plan?" Ching smiled brightly then quickly explained, and Abyo smirked. "Ohaha! I'm gonna give Garu a run for his money!"

The village square bustled with activity as Pucca stood in the center, pretending to look terrified. Abyo, now wearing a cheap fake ninja mask, leaped into view. "Give me all your noodles, or face my wrath!" Abyo declared, waving his arms dramatically. Pucca gasped, playing along perfectly. Villagers began to gather, curious about the commotion. Noticing all the spectators, Pucca gave out a yelp. Abyo took another step closer, ready to deliver his next line, but before he could say a word--

Garu appeared out of nowhere.

His eyes narrowed as he positioned himself in front of Pucca, shielding her from Abyo. His usually calm expression hardened into something fierce and protective. Pucca's cheeks reddened. She couldn't contain her excitement. Garu is protecting her right now! She looks over to Ching and notices her worried expression.

"Uh... oh," Ching whispered, watching from the sidelines. Garu is taking it seriously...

Abyo, unfazed, kept playing his role. "Stand aside, ninja boy! This girl belongs to me now!" Garu didn't flinch. He lunged at Abyo with lightning speed, aiming a strike. Abyo barely dodged.

Abyo smirked as he swung his nunchaku in fluid, practiced motions, the chain snapping taut with every spin. The gathered villagers murmured in anticipation, sensing the rising tension between the two fighters. Garu stood unwavering, his sharp gaze locked onto Abyo, muscles coiled like a spring ready to release. There was no hesitation in his stance, no sign of amusement or recognition. He saw an enemy, nothing more.

"Alright, ninja boy," Abyo taunted, rolling his shoulders before gripping his nunchaku tightly. "Let's see if you can handle this!"

Without another word, Abyo lunged forward, twisting his body mid air as he brought his nunchaku down in a powerful arc. Garu sidestepped effortlessly, his foot barely grazing the ground before he countered with a sharp jab toward Abyo’s ribs. Abyo barely blocked in time, twisting his weapon to catch Garu’s strike before flipping back to create distance.

Garu didn’t let up. He advanced, his movements eerily smooth as he dodged every wild swing Abyo threw his way. Each time Abyo struck, Garu maneuvered around it, his eyes calculating and cold. Then, with one fluid motion, Garu shot forward, closing the gap between them in an instant. Abyo had no time to react before Garu’s elbow drove into his chest, sending him stumbling back. The force nearly knocked the air from his lungs.

Abyo coughed and wiped at his mouth, grinning despite the sharp ache blooming in his ribs. "Oh, you wanna go hard, huh? Fine by me!"

He launched into a spinning attack, the nunchaku whipping toward Garu’s side. This time, Garu raised his forearm to absorb the blow before retaliating with a high kick aimed at Abyo’s shoulder. Abyo barely ducked in time, feeling the wind from the strike ruffle his hair. He pivoted, bringing his nunchaku around for another assault, but Garu caught the chain mid-air, yanking it forward with a sharp tug. Abyo’s balance wavered as Garu pulled him in, his knee shooting up toward Abyo’s stomach.

Thinking fast, Abyo twisted, letting go of one end of his weapon to avoid the full brunt of the attack. He dropped low and swung a leg under Garu, attempting to trip him. Garu hopped over it with ease and, before Abyo could recover, delivered a fierce downward kick straight to Abyo’s chest. The impact sent Abyo skidding across the cobblestone, his back slamming into the ground with a grunt.

The crowd gasped as Abyo groaned, pushing himself up on his elbows. "Okay… ow," he muttered, shaking the dizziness from his head. He looked up just in time to see Garu charging again, his eyes flashing with something dangerous.

Abyo grinned.

He rolled to the side just as Garu’s fist struck the ground where he had been. Dust kicked up as Abyo flipped to his feet, spinning his nunchaku before launching them at Garu’s face. Garu swayed out of the way, but Abyo anticipated it, using the motion to close in with a powerful punch aimed at Garu’s jaw.

At the last second, Garu tilted his head, avoiding the strike by mere inches. Then, with a speed that almost seemed inhuman, he twisted his body and landed a precise kick to Abyo’s wrist. The nunchaku flew from Abyo’s grasp, clattering across the cobblestones.

Abyo hissed. "Oh, come on!!!!!"

Before he could react, Garu grabbed him by the collar and tossed him over his shoulder. Abyo hit the ground hard, rolling with the impact before scrambling back up. His heart pounded as he stared at Garu, who stood completely unfazed, breathing steady, his body still poised for battle.

"Fine! Who needs weapons, anyway?" Abyo wiped sweat from his brow before cracking his knuckles. He dropped into a traditional martial arts stance, his muscles tightening with anticipation.

Garu responded by stabbing his sword into the ground, stepping forward silently.

Abyo smirked. "Now we’re talking."

They charged at the same time, fists meeting in a blur of motion. Abyo ducked under a right hook and countered with a sharp uppercut to Garu’s stomach. Garu barely reacted, immediately retaliating with a knee strike. Abyo blocked with his forearm but winced at the sheer force behind it.

Garu’s movements were controlled, precise. He didn’t waste energy on unnecessary strikes. Every attack was calculated, and each dodge was perfectly timed. Abyo, on the other hand, fought with wild energy, his attacks coming in fast bursts, hoping to catch Garu off guard.

But nothing seemed to shake him.

Abyo gritted his teeth. What is with him today? He's fighting like I actually hurt Pucca! He dodged another swift punch but failed to avoid the spinning kick that came right after. Garu’s foot collided with his ribs, sending him stumbling.

He barely regained his footing before Garu was on him again. A sharp elbow to his shoulder. A punch to his ribs. Then a sweeping kick that knocked his legs out from under him.

Abyo hit the ground hard, groaning as he rolled onto his back. He blinked up at the sky, his breath coming in sharp pants.

Garu stood over him, his shadow casting an imposing figure. He looked into Abyo's eyes with a menacing stare. His fist tightened, ready to deliver the final blow. Abyo's eyes widened. "GARU, IT'S ME! STOP!!" he yelled, yanking off the fake mask and holding up his hands. "It's Abyo! Chill out!"

Garu froze, his fist was an inch from Abyo's face. His eyes flicked between Abyo and Pucca, slowly realizing the situation. He blinked once, processing everything, before slowly lowering his fist. He took a step back, his stoic expression returning. Ching ran up, trying to hold back her nervous laughter. "That... was incredible. Abyo, you were so convincing." Abyo straightened up, brushing dirt off his pants. "Convincing? I nearly died!"

Pucca giggled, giving Garu a grateful smile. Garu didn't say anything, but his protective stance lingered for a second longer before he turned and walked off, wondering why he wasn't upset that Pucca faked being in danger. Pucca. Please don't do anything foolish like that.

; He thought to himself while leaving, his usual calm restored. '

Chapter 10: Chapter 8: A Small Victory

Chapter Text

Pucca sat on the roof of the noodle restaurant, her legs swinging as she scanned the village. Her eyes sparkled as they locked onto her favorite target, Garu, quietly walking through the marketplace. Without a second thought, she sprang into action.

Her chase began, as it always did, with her sprinting down the street toward him. She weaved through villagers, her red dress fluttering behind her, a determined smile plastered across her face. Garu caught sight of her from the corner of his eye and picked up his pace. He wasn't in the mood for a chase today, but Pucca wasn't the kind to take no for an answer.

She darted ahead, cutting him off and standing in his path with a mischievous glint in her eye. Garu sighed, giving her a glance before turning to walk the other way. But Pucca was quick, too quick. She reappeared in front of him, her dress proudly displaying his face. She grinned wide and gestured with open arms, inviting him in for a hug.

Garu held up a hand as if to say, Nope, and turned once more. This time, he broke into a light jog, hoping to lose her. Pucca, undeterred, chased after him, her feet barely touching the ground. She was having the time of her life, while Garu was trying to figure out why he didn't mind it as much as he used to.

After a few minutes, Garu found himself near the training grounds. He paused, catching his breath. He expected Pucca to jump him any second, but instead, she stood a few feet away, watching him quietly. She raised a hand and gave him a tiny wave, her usual chaotic energy replaced by a shy smile.

For a moment, Garu hesitated. His eyes softened just a little. He gave her a brief nod, the smallest acknowledgment, but it was enough to make Pucca's heart race. She stood frozen in place, replaying the moment in her head a hundred times as Garu walked away.

As he disappeared into the distance, Pucca clutched her chest, feeling a flutter she couldn't quite explain. She'd always chased Garu for fun, but this felt different, a small victory, a step closer to something more.

Garu stood by the riverbank, his mind far from his usual training routines. He replayed the earlier moment in his head, wondering why he'd acknowledged her at all. It wasn't like him to get distracted. He clenched his fists, trying to focus, but the memory of Pucca's shy wave wouldn't leave him.

Why do I care so much? he thought, his brows furrowed. His instincts had kicked in hard during the last encounter when he thought Pucca was in danger. He couldn't shake the protective urge that had surged through him.

He sighed, glancing at the sky. Maybe... just maybe, Pucca wasn't as annoying as he used to think.

The next day, Pucca tried something new. Instead of chasing Garu, she followed him quietly, her eyes never leaving him. Whenever he glanced back, she smiled sweetly, her hands clasped behind her back.

This time, Garu didn't run. He let her trail him for a while, occasionally sneaking a glance her way. Pucca beamed with pride. She knew it was just a matter of time before Garu truly opened up. Until then, she was happy with these small moments.

And Garu... well, he still didn't know what to make of Pucca. But for now, he didn't mind the company. Not one bit.

Pucca crouched low behind a fruit stand, her eyes locked onto Garu as he wandered through the marketplace. Her heart raced with excitement, and her grin widened, this was the perfect moment to strike! She darted from her hiding spot, weaving through the crowd like a red blur, and launched herself straight at him.

Garu noticed too late. Pucca latched onto his arm, her eyes sparkling with mischief. He froze, his body tensing, but before he could even think about escaping, Pucca leaned in and planted a quick kiss on his cheek.

Garu's face turned bright red. His heart skipped a beat, and he instinctively took a step back, raising a hand to his cheek like it had been set on fire.

Pucca giggled, clapping her hands in delight. She pointed at him, then at her cheek, clearly signaling for another kiss.

Garu shook his head furiously and took another step back, but Pucca was already advancing. She chased him in playful circles around the marketplace, her laughter echoing through the streets.

Garu tried to maintain his usual cool demeanor, but his blush betrayed him. His thoughts were racing.

What is she doing?! Why is she always trying to kiss me?! Why am I blushing?!

He glanced around, hoping no one noticed how flustered he was. His eyes met Pucca's for a brief second, and his heart did that annoying fluttering thing again.

She paused, tilting her head and giving him her most innocent look. For a split second, Garu forgot to breathe. His chest felt tight, and he couldn't shake the strange warmth bubbling inside him.

Then Pucca made her move. She lunged at him with her lips puckered.

"!!" Garu dodged just in time, barely managing to escape her grasp. He bolted down the street, his face still burning.

Pucca sprinted after him, laughing wildly. She wasn't giving up that easily.

After several near kisses and quick escapes, Garu found himself backed into a corner. His breathing was uneven, and his eyes darted around for an escape route. Pucca stood a few feet away, her hands on her hips, grinning triumphantly.

Garu raised a hand in surrender, silently begging her to calm down. But something shifted in her expression. Her grin softened, and instead of pouncing, she took a step closer and gently tapped his shoulder, her eyes full of warmth.

Garu blinked, his heart calming down just a little. The memory of her fake danger stunt from before flashed in his mind. Despite all the chaos, he still felt that same protective urge. His eyes softened, and for the first time, he gave Pucca a small, almost imperceptible smile.

Pucca's eyes lit up like fireworks. She froze for a moment, then threw her arms in the air in victory before darting forward and hugging him tightly.

Garu's blush returned in full force. He awkwardly patted her back, unsure what to do. His brain screamed at him to run, but his body wouldn't listen.

Pucca eventually let go, giving him a little wave before skipping off, her heart soaring.

Garu stood there for a moment, still processing everything. His thoughts were a whirlwind.

Why did I let her do that?

Why... do I feel kind of happy about it?

He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. Whatever was happening, it was starting to get harder to ignore.

; As Pucca disappeared into the distance, Garu found himself glancing after her. Maybe, just maybe... he didn't mind being chased so much after all.

Chapter 11: Chapter 9: Tobe

Chapter Text

The sound of clashing bamboo swords echoed through the small training ground deep in the woods. Garu's grip tightened around his sword, eyes locked on his opponent, Abyo, who was bouncing on his feet with a grin plastered across his face.

"C'mon, Garu! Show me what you've got!" Abyo called, twirling his nunchakus around with one hand. "You're holding back, aren't ya? I can feel it!"

Without a word, Garu lunged forward, his movements sharp and controlled. Their swords collided with a loud crack, the shockwave rattling the air. Abyo took a step back, only to quickly spring forward, his nunchakus flashing in the sunlight as he weaved around Garu's strikes.

"Oh, you're in for it now!" Abyo's voice was full of excitement as he dodged and countered with flashy, rapid spins of his nunchakus. He was always energetic, never staying still for a second. "You might be fast, Garu, but I'm way quicker than you think!"

The sparring continued at full speed, Garu's precision versus Abyo's unpredictable, high energy attacks. In the heat of it, Abyo suddenly threw off his shirt, flexing his muscles with a proud grin, his nunchakus spinning faster.

"Gotta let the air in, ya know? Don't wanna overheat during all this awesomeness!" he said, clearly loving every second of the fight.

Garu barely seemed to notice, his focus unwavering, and with a swift twist, he disarmed Abyo, sending his nunchakus flying through the air.

Abyo raised his hands in surrender, still grinning. "Alright, alright! You win this round! But mark my words, Garu, next time you won't see it coming! I'll have you eating my dust!" He snatched up his nunchakus from the ground, brushing off the dirt with exaggerated care, still acting like the excitable, competitive boy he was.

Garu didn't respond verbally, but a small smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Abyo collapsed onto a nearby rock, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Man, you're lucky to have me around. Who else would keep you on your toes? Without me, you'd be a total bore, you know that?"

Garu crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow. Abyo continued, oblivious to the silent look. "Don't even deny it! You're like the king of silence, always brooding and stuff. Who else could handle that?"

Garu just looked at him, an amused glint in his eyes.

"Exactly. No one else," Abyo said with a wide grin, leaning back. His expression softened a little, his usual cocky charm slipping for a moment. "Hey, you know what? You're like a brother to me, Garu. I'd take on a hundred ninjas for you, no problem. But, uh, I'd really prefer to just kick back and eat dumplings instead." He winked, clearly proud of his words.

Garu let out a silent chuckle, nodding in agreement.

After their training, the two walked back toward the village. Abyo was once again whistling loudly, hands behind his head. "So, how's your little shadow doing these days?" he teased, nudging Garu. "You know... Pucca?"

Garu shot him a look, eyes narrowing slightly. Abyo laughed. "Aw, come on! You gotta admit, it's kinda cute how she follows you around everywhere. She's basically your number-one fan! Bet she could take on a hundred ninjas too!"

Garu sighed and quickened his pace, feeling the heat rise in his face despite his best efforts to stay cool.

"Alright, alright, I'll drop it," Abyo said, raising his hands.

They stopped at a food stand, where Abyo immediately ordered two bowls of dumplings, grinning. "My treat. Gotta keep my sparring partner well-fed!"

Garu gave a silent nod of thanks as they sat down together. Abyo leaned in, voice lowering to a conspiratorial whisper. "So... I've been working on a new ninja move. It's gonna be my signature move once I perfect it."

Garu raised an eyebrow, interested despite himself.

"No, really!" Abyo insisted, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "I'm calling it Awesome Abyo Amazing Super Very Cool Power Kick. Doesn't that sound cool?"

Garu gave him a skeptical look, but Abyo was undeterred. "Hey, don't doubt me! Once I perfect it, you'll be begging me to teach you. I'll show you, just wait."

Garu rolled his eyes, standing up and motioning for Abyo to follow.

They began walking back to the training ground, but halfway there, the wind shifted, bringing with it a strange feeling. Abyo froze, his grin fading, and looked at Garu. "Hey... do you feel that?" His playful tone was gone, replaced by something more serious.

The trees rustled, and from the shadows emerged a dark figure, Tobe, Garu's sworn rival. His eyes burned with hatred as he stepped forward, flanked by a group of henchmen.

"Garu..." Tobe hissed, his voice low and menacing. "I've been waiting for this moment. Today, you'll regret crossing me. I will get my REVENGE."

Abyo stepped in front of Garu, cracking his knuckles with a grin. "Who's this guy, Garu?"

"Tobe. That is the last thing you'll ever hear." Tobe answered for Garu and chuckled darkly. "Garu and I have some unfinished business."

Abyo scoffed, tossing his nunchakus into the air with a flourish. "Pfft. I can take you and your weak henchmen." He dropped into his fighting stance, nunchakus spinning like a whirlwind around his hands.

Tobe's eyes narrowed as he looked at Abyo. "Stay out of this. This is between me and Garu."

; Garu calmly unsheathed his sword, his eyes locking with Tobe's. No words were needed, he was ready for whatever came next. '

The air crackled with tension as Garu and Abyo stood their ground, eyes locked on Tobe. The forest seemed to darken around them, the usual rustle of leaves replaced by an eerie silence.

"Having to have your friend fight with you, Garu?" Tobe sneered, his grip tightening on his sword. "Did I finally scare you?"

Garu remained silent, but his narrowed eyes spoke volumes.

"Pfft, scare him?" Abyo scoffed. "The only thing scary around here is your haircut, man."

Tobe's face twisted in anger. Without warning, he lunged at them, his sword flashing in the dim light.

Garu met him head-on, their blades clanging with brutal force. Abyo darted in, striking at Tobe's flank, but Tobe spun around with surprising speed, blocking the attack and sending Abyo stumbling back.

"This guy is fast..." Abuyo muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. "I don't think you normally struggled with this guy Garu! Did he get stronger?"

Garu gave him a sharp glance, silently confirming it, Tobe had gotten stronger the last time they fought. Much stronger.

"This time, you won't escape!" Tobe growled, striking with relentless force. The boys struggled to keep up, dodging and parrying as best they could, but Tobe's attacks came too quickly, his strength pushing them further back with each blow.

"NINJAS!"

Garu tightened his fists, his sharp eyes darting between the masked figures surrounding them. Abyo cracked his knuckles, already grinning. "Outnumbered? Pfft. We love a challenge." He whipped out his nunchucks, twirling them with ease.

But before either of them could make a move, the ninjas attacked all at once.

Garu ducked as a blade sliced through the air where his head had been a second ago. He retaliated instantly, delivering a sharp kick to the attacker's chest. Another ninja leaped at him, forcing Garu to dodge, narrowly avoiding a second strike.

Abyo was handling his own wave of enemies, spinning his nunchucks wildly, knocking back any ninja foolish enough to get too close. "Man, these guys just don't give up!" he huffed, flipping over one of them and landing a solid kick to another's jaw.

But no matter how fast they moved, how many enemies they struck down, more kept coming. The narrow alleyway worked against them, there was no room to escape, and the sheer number of ninjas was overwhelming.

Garu's breathing grew heavier as he barely blocked a barrage of attacks, each one pushing him further on the defensive. A ninja managed to land a punch to his side, making him stumble slightly. Tobe grinned at the sight. "What's wrong, Garu? Losing your edge?"

Abyo was faring no better. A pair of ninjas grabbed his arms from behind, while another aimed a direct hit at his stomach. He barely managed to twist out of the hold, but not before taking a painful hit to his ribs. "Okay---ow! That actually hurt." He winced, falling back beside Garu.

The two stood back to back now, breathing hard, their bodies covered in scrapes and bruises. They exchanged a quick glance, one that said everything. They had to find a way out, or they weren't going to last much longer.

Not far away, Pucca and Ching wandered through the forest, picking flowers for a bouquet. "These are so pretty!" Ching said, twirling a yellow flower between her fingers. "Do you think Abyo would like," She stopped mid-sentence, her eyes catching a blur of movement through the trees. "Wait... isn't that Garu?"

Pucca's head snapped up, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the scene ahead.

"He's in danger!" Ching gasped, grabbing Pucca's arm. "And... I think that's Abyo there too! We need to help them!"

Pucca nodded, determination flashing in her eyes. She dropped the flowers and sprinted toward the fight, signaling for Ching to follow.

Tobe was about to deliver a devastating blow when a kunai flew through the air, striking the ground between him and Garu.

"What the–" Tobe turned, only to see Pucca rushing toward him at full speed.

Ching followed right behind her, throwing more kunai's. She unsheathed her sword. "Back off!" she shouted, slashing at one of Tobe's henchmen and knocking him to the ground. Pucca leaped into the air, spinning like a whirlwind before landing a swift kick to Tobe's chest. He staggered back, glaring at her.

"Who...." Tobe hissed. "Who are you."

Pucca didn't respond. She just stared at him, ready for more.

Ching stepped beside her, raising her sword. "We're not afraid of you! Whoever you are!!"

Tobe scowled, then whistled sharply. From the shadows, more of his henchmen appeared, surrounding the group. "You should be."

Garu and Abyo regrouped with the girls, standing back to back.

"Looks like it's four against... a lot," Abyo said, glancing at the growing number of enemies. "I like those odds."

Pucca smiled confidently. Ching tightened her grip on her sword.

Garu shot Pucca a look that seemed to say, What are you doing here? Go before you get hurt!

Pucca just winked.

The henchmen rushed in, surrounding the group like a wave of shadows. Garu, not having enough time to worry, raised his sword, ready for battle. Pucca stood beside him, her fists clenched, while Ching and Abyo held their ground.

"Alright, time for a real workout," Abyo said, flashing a grin at Ching. "Try to keep up!"

"Don't worry about me," Ching shot back, flipping her sword with practiced ease. "Just watch your own back!"

The fight erupted into chaos. Garu moved like a blur, his sword cutting through the air with precision. Pucca spun and kicked, sending enemies flying with surprising strength. Abyo darted through the crowd, landing quick strikes and laughing the whole time. Ching kept close to him, her sword slashing in perfect rhythm and grace.

"We've got this!" Ching called out, her eyes shining with excitement.

"Of course we do!" Abyo winked, blocking an attack and countering with a swift punch. "We're unstoppable!"

Tobe, watching his forces fall one by one, growled in frustration. His eyes locked on Pucca.

"You're the problem here," he muttered, raising his sword. "I'll take you down first!"

He lunged at her with a fierce strike while Garu ran over, but Pucca easily sidestepped, grabbing his arm and flipping him over her shoulder. Tobe hit the ground hard, groaning in pain.

Garu was on him in an instant, pressing his sword against Tobe's chest. His eyes burned with a warning: Give up.

Tobe glared at him, breathing heavily. His henchmen lay defeated around him. After a tense moment, he snarled and pushed Garu's sword away.

"This isn't over," Tobe growled. "Next time, you won't be so lucky." He vanished in a puff of smoke, leaving the group in silence.

The tension broke as Abyo dropped his fighting stance, running a hand through his hair. "Well, that was fun." He turned to Ching with a playful smirk. "I gotta admit, you've got some moves."

Ching blushed, pretending to examine her sword. "Aw..uhm.. Thanks! Someone had to save you, after all."

Abyo chuckled, stepping closer. "Guess I owe you one. How about I treat you to some noodles later?" Ching's eyes lit up. "Awh! Thank you Abyo!!"

Meanwhile, Garu sheathed his sword and turned to Pucca. She was brushing dirt off her dress, completely unfazed by the battle. When she noticed him staring, she grinned brightly. Garu sighed, relieved she wasn't hurt during the battle. He gave her a small nod, silently acknowledging her help.

Pucca beamed, clasping her hands behind her back. For a moment, they just stood there, the quiet hum of the forest surrounding them. Garu's usual annoyance with her seemed to fade, replaced by something softer.

Abyo broke the silence. "Alright, lovebirds!!! Let's head back before Tobe changes his mind." Garu shot him a glare, but Pucca just giggled, skipping alongside him as they walked back toward the village.

Pucca sneaked Garu a kiss, and another chase started.  '

Chapter Text

Pucca stood outside the noodle shop, gently sweeping the front steps. Her eyes sparkled as she looked up, just in time to catch sight of Garu walking by with his usual cool, composed stride. Her heart did a happy flip in her chest, and a wide, cheeky grin spread across her face. She was about to run up and glomp him with her usual energy when Garu paused. He glanced at her, his unreadable expression barely changing.

Before she could make her move, Garu reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper. He handed it to her wordlessly, then turned to leave. Pucca blinked in surprise and stared at the paper in her hands.

Curious, she opened it, her eyes widening when she saw the drawing inside: a simple but beautifully drawn cherry blossom. Her heart skipped a beat. It was Garu's way of thanking her for saving him during their last adventure. Her cheeks flushed with warmth, and she brought the paper to her chest as if to protect it from the world. Garu had never done something like this before... it made her feel all fluttery inside. Maybe... just maybe... he was starting to warm up to her?

Just as Pucca's thoughts started to race, the peaceful atmosphere of the village was shattered by a loud, flashy red carriage drawn by Dada. The sound of clinking and jangling jewelry echoed in the air as the carriage came to a halt. Out stepped Ring Ring, draped in rich silks and sparkling accessories, her every movement exaggerated for maximum effect.

"Greetings, villagers!" Ring Ring announced with a dramatic flair, her voice dripping with confidence. "I've decided to grace this ugly little town with my fabulousness!"

The villagers exchanged amused glances, already accustomed to her theatrical entrances. But Ring Ring had a specific target in mind, none other than Garu, who stood near the training hall, appearing as stoic as ever.

"There he is..." she whispered to herself, her eyes locking onto Garu. A mischievous smile stretched across her face as she straightened up and strutted towards him.

Without wasting a moment, she approached Garu, positioning herself directly in front of him with an air of absolute certainty.

"Garu, right?" she purred, batting her lashes in exaggerated flirtation. "I've heard sooo much about you. A strong, silent type. Mysterious. Absolutely perfect."

Garu, already uncomfortable, raised an eyebrow. He could feel the pressure of her presence closing in on him, and his brain scrambled for an exit plan. But Ring Ring wasn't making it easy. She leaned in closer and placed a hand lightly on his arm.

"We should hang out sometime... You could... show me around," she suggested, her voice soft, almost seductive.

Garu took a tiny step back, visibly uncomfortable. But Ring Ring was relentless, closing the gap, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You don't have to be shy, you know. I won't bite. Unless you want me to."

From her spot by the noodle shop, Pucca narrowed her eyes as she watched the exchange. Her grip tightened on the broomstick, her face flushed with jealousy. Ring Ring's exaggerated moves, her overly sweet voice, and the way she was invading Garu's personal space, it was too much for Pucca. She didn't like it one bit.

But Pucca wasn't the type to rush in just yet. No, she wanted to see how Garu would handle it. Maybe, just maybe, he'd choose her over Ring Ring. Her heart thumped in her chest as she watched Garu's every move, holding her breath.

Garu, meanwhile, was mentally begging for a distraction. Where's Abyo when I need him? he thought desperately. He wasn't used to anyone being this forward, Pucca's affection was loud but playful, her gestures full of care and innocence. Ring Ring, though... she was another story. Her constant advances felt overwhelming.

He had to get away. His mind raced, but as if on cue, Ring Ring reached for his hand, and the moment was sealed.

"Come on," she cooed, her voice dripping with sweetness. "We could be the perfect team."

That was enough for Pucca.

With her usual burst of energy, she zoomed across the street, stopping in front of Garu and Ring Ring with all the grace of a charging bull. Her eyes burned with determination as she crossed her arms, standing protectively between Garu and Ring Ring, her face flushed with righteous anger.

Ring Ring raised an amused eyebrow, clearly unfazed by the interruption. "Who... are you?" she asked, her tone dripping with sarcasm.

Pucca didn't say a word. Instead, she gave a big, innocent smile and waved enthusiastically at Garu, completely ignoring Ring Ring's presence. Without hesitation, she grabbed Garu's hand and pulled him away, leading him toward the noodle shop.

Garu, looking incredibly relieved, followed her without question, his heart still racing from the encounter.

"Why did he ignore me? For someone so ugly and immature?" Ring Ring muttered angrily, her voice rising. She took a deep breath, then exhaled dramatically. "Okay. We'll play that game then. Girl."

The sounds of the village filled the air as Garu, still during his training, honed his skills. His movements were sharp, fluid, and disciplined, the very picture of focus... until the unmistakable sound of clinking heels cut through the air.

Garu froze for a second, his instincts telling him to run, but it was too late. Ring Ring was back.

"There you are, Garu!" she cooed, flashing him a radiant smile as she fluttered her eyes. "I've been looking everywhere for you."

Garu blinked but didn't speak. His usual strategy of silence seemed like the only option. He nodded politely and stepped aside, hoping Ring Ring would take the hint and leave him be.

Ring Ring wasn't going anywhere. She closed the distance between them, circling Garu like a cat eyeing its prey. "I just adore the strong, silent type," she purred. "You and I... we'd be perfect together."

Garu glanced around nervously, his heart rate picking up, not because of Ring Ring's flirtation, but because he needed an escape. Where's Pucca or Abyo when I need them? he thought frantically.

Ring Ring leaned closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You don't have to be shy, you know. I'm smart, rich, beautiful, and absolutely perfect. You're lucky I've chosen you."

Garu shifted, uncomfortably inching backward. He considered running, but before he could act, Pucca arrived.

With the same boundless energy that only she had, Pucca darted toward them, her face red with anger. She skidded to a halt in front of Ring Ring, blocking her way to Garu. Her arms crossed, and her foot stomped once, loudly.

Ring Ring raised an eyebrow, clearly amused by Pucca's protective stance. "Aww, what's this? Is the little noodle girl... jealous?"

Pucca didn't respond with words. Her narrowed eyes, tightly crossed arms, and foot stomp spoke louder than any words could. She wasn't backing down.

Ring Ring laughed. "Oh, how cute!!! Do you actually think you stand a chance against me? Let me spell it out for you, darling." She began to list her "superior qualities," counting on her fingers with exaggerated flair. "One: I'm the most beautiful girl in the world. Two: I have an impeccable fashion sense. Three: I'm rich."

As Ring Ring rambled on, Pucca's patience wore thin. She clenched her fists, her cheeks steaming with frustration. She could barely hold herself back.

Ring Ring smiled smugly. "What do you have, Pucca?"

Pucca's response was simple: she stood taller, ready for whatever Ring Ring had planned next.

"Oh, I've got an idea!" Ring Ring clapped her hands together, ready to escalate her challenge.

But Pucca was ready. This was her fight, and no one, no one, was going to take Garu from her.

' "Let's settle this once and for all. A girl's contest to win Garu's love!" '

Chapter 14: Chapter 12: For Garu's love

Chapter Text

At the mention of a contest, Garu's eyes widened. A contest for my love?! His gaze darted between Pucca and Ring Ring, both of whom were locked in an intense stare-off. Slowly, carefully, he began to edge toward the side, hoping to slip away unnoticed.

Unfortunately for Garu, Ring Ring caught the movement out of the corner of her eye.

"Oh, Garu," she called sweetly. "Don't go anywhere. You're the prize, after all."

Garu froze, his brain screaming for a solution. Stay calm. Maybe they'll forget I'm here.

Ring Ring crossed her arms, smirking. "Tomorrow at noon, we'll have our little contest. Strength, beauty, and charm let's see who really deserves Garu's heart."

Pucca nodded firmly, accepting the challenge without hesitation. She glanced at Garu, giving him a reassuring smile as if to say, Don't worry. I've got this.

Ring Ring tossed her hair dramatically and turned on her heel. "Prepare to lose, noodle girl," she called over her shoulder. "I don't lose."

As Ring Ring strutted away, Garu sighed quietly, running a hand through his hair. Why me? he thought. He looked at Pucca, who was already bouncing with excitement and determination and couldn't help but feel a little relieved.

At least with Pucca... things were simpler.

Still, the thought of tomorrow's challenge left him more exhausted than all his ninja training combined.

The village square buzzed with energy as a crowd gathered to witness the most bizarre event of the year: The Girls' Contest for Garu's Heart.

RingRing stood confidently at the center, wearing a shimmering outfit that sparkled in the sunlight. She waved to the crowd like a queen greeting her subjects. Pucca, on the other hand, stood quietly next to her, dressed in her usual red tunic, arms crossed, ready for battle.

Garu sat on a nearby rock, shifting uncomfortably. His eyes darted around, looking for an escape, but the excited villagers blocked every exit. Great. There's no way out.

Abyo, acting as the "official judge," leaped onto the makeshift stage and raised his arms. "Welcome, everyone, to the greatest competition ever! Today, two fierce competitors will battle it out for the honor of being Garu's number one girl!"

He flexed dramatically, pausing for effect. "Let the contest begin!"

Abyo dragged a large log onto the stage. "First challenge, Strength! Whoever can break this log in half is the winner!"

Ring Ring cracked her knuckles and smirked. "Easy." She raised her hand, summoning her powers. With a single swipe of her glowing hand, the log split cleanly in two. The crowd clapped politely.

Ring Ring flipped her hair. "Top that, noodle girl."

Pucca stepped forward, examining the log pieces on the ground. She bent down, picked up both pieces and snapped them into even smaller bits with her bare hands.

The crowd gasped. Abyo dropped his jaw. Even Garu's eyes widened slightly.

Ring Ring's confident smile faltered. "W-well... strength isn't everything!"

Abyo gestured dramatically. "Time for the Beauty Round! Contestants, show us your best smile!"

Ring Ring struck a pose, tilting her head just right, her teeth gleaming like pearls. She batted her eyelashes and flashed a dazzling smile that sparkled in the sunlight. "Ta-da!"

The crowd murmured in admiration.

Pucca simply smiled sweetly. Her smile wasn't flashy, but it was warm and genuine, and the crowd couldn't help but "aww" at her innocent charm. Even Garu found himself... staring just a little longer than he meant to.

Ring Ring noticed. Her face twitched slightly. Why is this working?! She breathed and walked in circles, "I'm too pretty to be angry. I'm too pretty to be angry...!"

Abyo clapped his hands. "Final round, Charm! Time to win Garu's heart!"

Ring Ring walked straight up to Garu, her eyes locking onto his. She leaned in close, invading his personal space. "Garu," she purred, "why don't you come with me? I can give you everything you've ever wanted, luxury, fame, adventure..."

Garu leaned back, his face turning red. He tried to shuffle away, but Ring Ring grabbed his arm.

Before he could respond, Pucca bolted to his side, yanking his other arm and pulling him away from Ring Ring.

The crowd gasped.

Pucca pointed at herself, then at Garu, and gave him a determined nod. Her message was clear: You're mine.

Garu blinked at her, his heart skipping a beat. For a moment, he felt strangely... safe.

Ring Ring scowled. Why isn't he saying anything?! Why does he look so calm with her?!

She crossed her arms. "Fine! Let's let Garu decide who wins!"

Every eye turned to Garu. He froze. Decide?! No way. His mind raced. He looked at Ring Ring, then at Pucca. His gaze lingered on Pucca a little longer, he didn't know why, but being with her felt easier, more natural.

Abyo grinned. "Come on, Garu! Who's the winner?"

Garu cleared his throat, stood up, and...

The crowd erupted into laughter, clapping and cheering. Abyo threw his arms in the air. "And the winner is... Pucca!"

Pucca beamed, her cheeks flushed with happiness. Ring Ring stood frozen, her fists clenched in frustration.

As the crowd began to disperse, Ring Ring stood frozen in place, her fists clenched tightly. Her eye twitched as she watched Pucca walk away with that victorious glow.

Her breath grew heavy. No... NO. This isn't how it's supposed to go.

"I'm too perfect to be angry... I'm too perfect to be angry... I'm too--"

Suddenly, her blue hair burst from her head, lengthening and twisting wildly in the air, glowing with a strange, mystical light. Her eyes flashed dangerously as her red gown transformed into a magnificent Chinese opera gown, adorned with shimmering golden details. Her skin turned a deep red, and horn-like markings spread across her face.

The ground trembled beneath her feet as she hovered above the stage, her flowing hair snaking around her like a living weapon. The villagers gasped and backed away. Abyo, ever the thrill-seeker, grinned. "Whoa... now that's awesome!"

Ring Ring's voice echoed, calm yet menacing. "You think you've won, Pucca? " She pointed a long, elegant finger at Pucca. "I'll show you why you'll never be good enough." Her hair lashed out, striking the ground inches from Pucca's feet. Dirt and rocks exploded into the air.

The village square was tense, a hush settling over the crowd as the two women stood facing each other, the air crackling with the promise of conflict. Pucca's eyes locked onto Ring Ring, her expression fierce and determined. Ring Ring, on the other hand, wore a sly smirk, her usual grace and elegance never faltering.

Ring Ring twirled a strand of her long, blue hair around her finger, her voice dripping with malice. "You think you're worthy of standing against me, Pucca?" she taunted, her eyes glinting with challenge. "You're nothing compared to my power."

Without another word, she whipped her hair forward with a deadly flick. It lashed out like a whip, striking the ground near Pucca's feet with a force that sent a shockwave through the air. The villagers gasped, quickly stepping back to avoid the debris flying in every direction. Pucca, however, didn't flinch. Instead, she grinned, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

In the blink of an eye, Ring Ring sent her hair surging toward Pucca again, this time aiming for her head. Pucca dodged and rolled to the side, narrowly missing the attack. Her movements were fluid, almost too quick to follow, as she sprang to her feet and grinned playfully at Ring Ring. Her usual playful energy was still there, despite the dangerous situation, but her smile was sharp, confident.

Ring Ring's smirk twisted into a scowl as she swung her hair again, this time grabbing a nearby wooden barrel and hurling it toward Pucca. The object soared through the air, crashing into the ground in front of her. Pucca leapt back just in time, avoiding the collision, but the ground beneath her feet cracked as the barrel hit with a force that rattled her.

"You're fast," Ring Ring sneered, "but not fast enough." Her hair twirled once more, and this time it grabbed a large rock, sending it straight at Pucca's chest. Pucca gasped, but before the rock could hit her, she punched through it mid-air, shattering it into pieces. She didn't even flinch at the force.

Ring Ring's eyes narrowed in frustration as her hair flared around her like a whip, the strands stretching and curling with precision, ready for another attack. Pucca's expression remained as playful as ever, a challenge in her eyes. She darted forward again, dodging the next strike and using her agility to her advantage. Her foot kicked up a cloud of dust as she sprinted toward Ring Ring.

In one fluid motion, Pucca launched herself toward Ring Ring, throwing a quick, powerful punch aimed at her opponent's face. The force of the blow sent Ring Ring staggering back, her eyes wide in surprise. She regained her balance just in time to narrowly avoid a follow-up punch, but the damage had been done. Her elegant demeanor faltered for a split second.

However, Ring Ring wasn't done yet. Enraged, she whirled around, her hair lashing out with a deadly speed. Pucca didn't hesitate. She lunged again, this time ducking under the hair and delivering another punch—this one landing squarely on Ring Ring's cheek.

But Ring Ring retaliated with a vengeance. Her hair whipped around like a storm, striking Pucca across the chest and sending her flying backward. Pucca hit the ground hard, but she bounced back to her feet almost instantly, brushing off the dirt with a playful grin that was almost out of place for such an intense fight. She cracked her knuckles and dove forward again, ready for round two.

That's when Garu made his move.

Watching from the sidelines, his expression as unreadable as ever, Garu's eyes narrowed as he saw Pucca struggling. Though he remained silent, there was a quiet urgency in his gaze. He moved before anyone could blink, his body a blur as he crossed the distance between himself and the two women.

In one fluid motion, Garu positioned himself between Pucca and Ring Ring, his body a shield, his stance unwavering. His eyes were locked on Ring Ring, the faintest hint of warning in them. There was no need for words, his presence alone was enough to communicate his message: This ends now.

Ring Ring hesitated, her hair twitching restlessly, but she didn't make a move. The atmosphere shifted, her usual smugness replaced by a moment of uncertainty. She glanced at Garu, her eyes flashing with defiance, but ultimately, she withdrew, letting her hair retract to its usual length as her Yang form slowly faded. She descended to the ground, brushing imaginary dust off her gown. With a scoff, she turned her back on them.

"Next time, Pucca," she said, her voice dripping with venom. "You won't be so lucky."

She walked off with a graceful, deliberate stride, leaving the villagers to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The tension in the air slowly dissipated as Garu turned to Pucca, his eyes softening just a fraction. Pucca, ever the energetic spirit, flashed him a grin, her eyes full of gratitude and mischief.

She gave a playful, exaggerated bow, silently thanking Garu for the timely intervention. Garu simply nodded.

Abyo, who had been watching everything like it was the greatest action movie ever, clapped his hands together. "Best. Day. Ever!" Abyo, Garu, and Pucca strolled down the cobblestone path toward Ching's house. Abyo was still buzzing with excitement, throwing playful punches into the air.

"Did you guys see that? Ring Ring was like, BOM POW!! Totally epic!" Abyo grinned, striking a dramatic pose. "I'd totally fight her! Her Yang powers are so COOL!!"

Pucca giggled softly, her eyes drifting to Garu. He walked beside her, quiet as always, his hands tucked into his sleeves. Though his face remained calm, his occasional side glances at Pucca didn't go unnoticed.

She's fearless, Garu thought, stealing another glance at her. Even in the middle of all that chaos... she didn't back down. His chest tightened slightly, a strange, unfamiliar feeling creeping in.

"You okay, Garu?" Abyo clapped a hand on his shoulder, snapping him out of his thoughts. Garu nodded quickly, his expression neutral again, but his heart was still beating just a little faster than usual. They arrived at Ching's house, where she greeted them with her usual cheerful smile. Pucca ran up and hugged her tightly, while Abyo leaned casually against the doorframe, flashing a cocky grin.

Back near the village square, Ring Ring stood motionless, her long blue hair gently swaying in the breeze. The crowd had dispersed, but she stayed rooted in place, her eyes fixed on the spot where Pucca had stood.

Her fingers curled into fists, nails digging into her palms.

"She stole my moment," Ring Ring muttered, her voice trembling. "That little--"

She stopped herself, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. "I'm too perfect to be angry... I'm too perfect to be angry..."

But it didn't help this time. Her heart pounded in her chest, and the bitter taste of humiliation wouldn't go away.

Her mind raced. All Garu's eyes showed protectiveness. Not for me but for HER. What does he even see in her? He had been so focused on protecting her.

"Why does he care about Pucca? What does she have that I don't?"

Her eyes snapped open, glowing with determination. A wicked smile slowly spread across her face.

"Fine. If that's how it's going to be... I'll just have to make him mine, whether he likes it or not."

; Her blue hair rippled as a spark of her power returned for a brief moment. A storm was brewing in her heart, and it was all aimed at Pucca. '

Chapter 15: Chapter 13: Abyo isn't right for Ching

Chapter Text

Abyo stood in the center of the ring, casually twirling his nunchakus. His cocky grin was as wide as ever. "Ready to get wrecked, Ching?" he called out, bouncing lightly on his feet. "I'll go easy on you this time. Maybe."

Ching stepped into the ring with her sword drawn, her eyes calm but determined. She tightened her grip on the hilt, the weight of her emotions pressing on her chest. She'd sparred with Abyo countless times before, but this time felt...--

"Just focus," she muttered under her breath. I've trained for this.

The sparring began with a flash of movement. Ching was fast and precise, her sword flowing like water through the air, every movement calculated. Abyo was quick to counter, his nunchakus spinning in a blur as he blocked her strikes.

"You're really trying today, huh?" Abyo teased, dodging a swift strike aimed at his side. "Trying to impress me or something?"

Ching gritted her teeth, ignoring his comment. "Stay focused."

But Abyo wasn't done yet. As they circled each other, a girl passed by the training grounds and waved at him. Abyo, ever the show-off, winked and flashed her a charming grin. "Hey there, you come here often?" he called out mid spar.

Ching's sword nearly slipped from her grasp. Her heart clenched, and her movements faltered for a split second, just long enough for Abyo to tap her shoulder with his nunchakus.

"Gotcha," Abyo said, stepping back with a satisfied smirk.

Ching lowered her sword, her face flushed with a mix of frustration and something deeper. Without saying a word, she turned on her heel and walked away, her footsteps quick and determined.

"Ching?" Abyo called after her, his smile fading. "Hey, where are you going?"

But she didn't look back. Abyo stood there, watching her disappear down the path, a strange knot forming in his stomach.

What just happened?

~ The memory swept over Ching like a breeze she couldn't shake. It was years ago, back when she was just starting to learn how to wield a sword, a clumsy beginner, too small for the blade she carried and too proud to admit she had no idea what she was doing.

She'd wandered too far from the village that day, practicing alone in the woods, her strikes awkward and unbalanced. She had been so focused on trying to imitate her father's flawless moves that she hadn't noticed the trio of bandits creeping toward her until it was too late.

"Hey, little girl," one of them sneered, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Shouldn't you be playing with dolls instead of swinging that thing around?"

Ching gripped her sword with trembling hands. She refused to back down. "Stay away!" she shouted, her voice betraying her fear. She swung the sword wildly, but the bandits just laughed, circling closer.

Her heart pounded in her chest. What do I do?

Then, out of nowhere, a voice cut through the tension.

"Hey! Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"

A boy leaped into the clearing, flipping through the air with a confident grin plastered across his face. His black hair spiked in all directions, and his nunchakus spun in a blur at his sides.

It was Abyo.

He landed between Ching and the bandits, his stance relaxed but ready. "Three against one? That's hardly fair," he said, cracking his knuckles. "Guess I'll have to even the odds."

The fight that followed felt like something out of a storybook. Abyo moved with the ease of someone born to fight, every strike perfectly timed, every dodge a calculated step. His nunchakus whirled like an extension of his own body, knocking the bandits off their feet one by one.

Ching stood frozen, her wide eyes locked on him. She'd never seen anyone fight like that before, so fearless, so strong. Her heart raced, but it wasn't fear anymore. It was something else entirely.

Within minutes, the bandits scrambled to their feet and fled, bruised and humiliated. Abyo dusted off his hands, turning to face her with that same cocky grin.

"You okay?" he asked, offering her a hand.

Ching hesitated, then placed her hand in his. His grip was warm, steady. "I... yeah," she managed to say, her voice barely a whisper.

"You should be more careful," Abyo said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "But that was pretty cool how you tried to take them on!!!"

From that moment on, Ching was captivated. Abyo became more than just the boy who saved her, he became her inspiration. She vowed to become stronger, to master her sword, to one day stand beside him as an equal. ~

But somewhere along the way, her admiration had turned into something deeper. Something that made her heart flutter every time Abyo smiled at her.

And no matter how infuriating he could be, that feeling never left.

Ching pushed open the heavy doors of her father's dojo, her footsteps echoing across the polished wooden floor. The scent of incense and aged wood filled the air, a familiar comfort. But today, even the peace of the dojo couldn't ease the storm inside her.

Her father, Chang, stood in the center of the room, his arms folded behind his back. His eyes were kind but sharp, always seeing more than Ching wanted to reveal.

"Back so soon?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "Did something happen?"

"I need extra training," Ching said quickly, avoiding his gaze. "Intense training."

Chang studied her for a moment before nodding. "Very well. Show me your form."

Ching moved into position, her sword slicing through the air with precision. At first, her movements were as graceful as ever, flowing from one strike to the next like a perfectly choreographed dance. But as her thoughts drifted back to Abyo, his teasing grin, his carefree attitude, and the way he flirted so effortlessly, her rhythm faltered.

Her strikes became erratic, her breathing uneven. The weight of her frustration and confusion pressed down on her until her sword clattered to the floor. Chang stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Ching," he said softly, "what's troubling you?"

"I don't know!" Ching exclaimed, her voice cracking. "I just... I don't understand why I feel this way. I work so hard, and he doesn't even notice. He's always joking, always flirting with other girls, and it's like I don't matter to him at all!" Tears welled up in her eyes, but she quickly wiped them away.

Chang nodded thoughtfully. "Emotions are a part of who we are, Ching. They can be powerful, but they can also cloud our judgment. When we let them control us, our movements become messy, and our minds unfocused. But suppressing them entirely is not the answer either."

"But what do I do?" Ching asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"You must find balance," Chang said. "Acknowledge your feelings, but don't let them consume you. And remember, sometimes, the people we care about the most are the hardest to understand."

Ching sat on the dojo steps, the cool evening breeze brushing against her skin. The sky was painted in soft hues of pink and orange, the sun dipping below the horizon. Her father's words echoed in her mind, but they didn't bring the clarity she had hoped for.

Why do I even like him?

She thought back to all the times Abyo had made her laugh, the way he always lit up the room with his energy. He was carefree, confident, and utterly infuriating. He drove her crazy... but he also made her feel alive.

Ching rested her chin on her knees, sighing. "Why do I like a boy like Abyo?" she whispered to herself. The sound of footsteps pulled her from her thoughts. Chang stood behind her, holding two cups of tea. He handed one to her and sat down beside her.

"You'll figure it out," he said gently. "Love is a journey, not a destination. Give yourself time."

Ching smiled faintly, taking a sip of the warm tea. Maybe her father was right. Maybe she just needed time to understand her feelings, and to decide what she was going to do about them.

The stars began to twinkle in the sky, and Ching felt a little lighter. Her heart was still tangled in confusion, but at least now she knew one thing for sure, she was stronger than her emotions, and she would face whatever came next with the same determination she brought to every battle.

For now, though, she just wanted to breathe, to rest, and maybe... to dream of a world where things were a little less complicated. '

Chapter 16: Chapter 14: Goh-Rong Feast Competition

Chapter Text

The sun beamed down on Sooga Village as the annual Goh-Rong Feast Competition kicked off in full swing. Banners fluttered in the breeze, villagers gathered excitedly, and the scent of sizzling noodles filled the air. The main event? A fierce battle to create the ultimate Jajang Noodles. The winner would receive a golden trophy, a year of free meals at Goh-Rong, and, most importantly, eternal bragging rights.

Pucca sat proudly at the judge's table beside her three uncles, wearing a tiny judge's sash and banging her chopsticks together in anticipation. Her eyes gleamed. She was ready.

Garu stood at his cooking station, rolling up his sleeves with a determined look in his eyes. He wasn't much for public events, but the idea of honor and victory (plus free food) ignited something within him.

However, hidden in the shadows behind a pile of stacked barrels, Tobe and his masked ninjas crouched, whispering furiously amongst themselves.

Tobe peered through his spyglass at Garu, his expression twisting into a wicked grin. "Hah! Garu thinks he can win a mere cooking contest? That fool! He will taste the bitter soup of defeat!"

His ninjas nodded in unison. "Bitter soup! Yes, boss! Defeat soup! Ooooh!"

Tobe sighed. "Just... follow my lead."

"Follow the soup, got it!" a ninja whispered.

Tobe smacked his forehead.

The whistle blew, and the competition began.

Dada chopped vegetables with feverish precision, sweating buckets as he muttered, "Too much? Too little? No, just right--WAIT, NO--!" Meanwhile, Ssoso hummed to himself, lazily flipping noodles in the air with zero concern. Dandy worked with the grace of a warrior, his movements elegant, like a martial artist performing a kata with a soup ladle.

Garu, focused and disciplined, kneaded his dough with the skill of a seasoned warrior. His hands moved like a blur, chopping, boiling, and seasoning with effortless speed.

Tobe saw his chance.

Slithering closer, he pulled out a small vial of Sabotage Powder, an unreasonably spicy concoction meant to ruin Garu's dish. He grinned as he prepared to sprinkle it in--

WHACK!

Pucca's chopsticks shot out of nowhere, smacking the vial from Tobe's hands. It flipped dramatically through the air before landing... directly into Dada's pot.

Dada sniffed. "Hmm... A hint of something new!" He gave the pot an enthusiastic stir.

Tobe growled, rubbing his wrist. "Curse that girl... Ninjas! Plan B!"

The ninjas saluted. "YES, MASTER TOBE!"

...Then immediately forgot what Plan B was.

One ninja tapped another on the shoulder. "Wait, what's Plan B?"

The second ninja shrugged. "I thought you knew."

A third ninja piped up, "I think it was 'cause a distraction'--"

"GOT IT! FIREWORKS!"

Before Tobe could object, his ninjas had already lit a bundle of fireworks.

BOOM!

A loud explosion rocked the competition as fireworks shot into the sky, spiraling wildly in every direction. Villagers screamed and ducked as a flaming rocket crashed through Dandy's station.

". . ." Dandy just... sat there. Staring.

Meanwhile, one rogue firework zoomed straight for Garu's noodle bowl.

Pucca moved instantly.

She grabbed a wok, swung it like a baseball bat, and SMACKED the firework into the air like a shooting star. It spiraled, exploded in mid-air, and somehow landed directly on Tobe's head.

Tobe, now smoking slightly, twitched in fury. His ninjas clapped.

"Ooooh! Pretty colors, boss!"

Tobe shrieked, "YOU BUFFOONS!"

Pucca, still grinning, waved at Tobe before returning to her judge's chair.

Despite the fiery chaos, the judges finally reached the tasting stage.

Dada's dish was... unexpectedly powerful. Due to Tobe's sabotage, the spiciness level was enough to melt a hole in the table. One of Pucca's uncles took a bite and promptly passed out.

Ssoso's dish, while expertly cooked, tasted suspiciously like soap. "An artistic choice," he said with a serene nod.

Dandy's noodles were crispy, despite not being meant to be.

Then, it was Garu's turn.

Pucca took a bite.

Her eyes sparkled. Perfection.

Her uncles nodded in approval.

"The winner is... Garu!" Uncle Dumpling announced, raising Garu's hand. The villagers erupted into cheers.

Garu blinked, caught between pride and embarrassment as Pucca approached him with the golden trophy. He hesitated before reaching for it, but--

SWOOP!

Pucca snatched it back at the last second, grinning mischievously. Before Garu could react, she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek.

Garu's entire soul left his body.

His face burned crimson. His eyes darted wildly before he bolted at full speed, dashing toward the village gates as if his life depended on it.

Pucca, still holding the trophy, gave chase.

Behind them, Tobe seethed in the shadows, his fists shaking. His ninjas, meanwhile, were playing rock-paper-scissors.

"Best two out of three?"

Tobe screamed.

"This isn't over!" he howled, shaking his fist. "I swear, Garu, I will--"

Before he could finish, another leftover firework exploded under his feet, launching him into the sky.

His scream faded into the distance as his ninjas waved cheerfully.

"Good luck, boss! Have a safe flight!"

And with that, the Great Goh-Rong Noodle Competition ended in true Sooga Village fashion, complete and utter chaos. '

Chapter 17: Chapter 15: Too Close for Comfort

Chapter Text

The warm afternoon breeze blew gently through Sooga Village as Garu leaped from rooftop to rooftop, his heart thumping hard in his chest, not from exertion, but from the growing frustration bubbling inside him. He had been patient. He'd kept his cool through all of Pucca's antics, from surprise hugs to constant, sudden appearances when he was training. But today... today, she was too much.

He sprinted faster, his feet barely touching the tiles as he tried to shake her off. She was always right behind him, her determined footsteps never faltering.

He reached a quiet spot on the outskirts of the village and paused, catching his breath. Garu looked around, no sign of her. Relief flooded through him as he closed his eyes, hoping for just one moment of peace.

But peace didn't last.

A shadow appeared beside him. Pucca.

Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes twinkling as she grinned, holding out the golden trophy from the cooking contest. She waved it at him playfully, expecting their usual game of chase to begin.

Garu's eyes narrowed. His hands clenched into fists at his sides. This time, he didn't want to play. He wanted to be alone.

He spun around sharply and waved his hands in frustration, signaling for her to go. Pucca tilted her head, confused, her smile faltering.

When she didn't move, he felt the frustration boil over. His usual calm, quiet demeanor cracked.

Garu reached out, gently but firmly pushing her back, just enough to put some distance between them. His expression was serious, his dark eyes full of warning. Stay away, they seemed to say.

Pucca stumbled back, blinking in surprise. She stood frozen for a moment, processing what had just happened. Slowly, her playful expression faded.

For the first time, she understood. He didn't want her there.

Her eyes dropped to the trophy in her hands. She held it tighter, her lips pressed together as she tried to keep her emotions in check. Then, without a sound, she turned and walked away.

Garu watched her go, his chest rising and falling with deep breaths. He crossed his arms, telling himself this was what he wanted. He needed space, and now he had it.

So why did it feel so wrong?

The hill was quiet, the sky glowing softly with the golden hues of sunset. Garu sat down, hugging his knees as the wind rustled the grass around him. This was what he'd always wanted, solitude, peace.

But the silence felt heavier than usual.

His mind wandered back to Pucca's face. Her round cheeks were always rosy with excitement. The sparkle in her eyes whenever she found him. How that sparkle had dimmed when he pushed her away.

Garu's chest tightened at the memory. Normally, he loved being alone. He'd always preferred the quiet, the calm. But now... it didn't feel so peaceful anymore.

For the first time in a long while, he felt lonely. Not the good kind of alone he was used to, but the kind that gnawed at him. It wasn't just the absence of noise. It was the absence of her.

He buried his face in his arms, sighing deeply. He told himself it was for the best. Pucca would bounce back, she always did.

But that gnawing feeling didn't go away.

The Goh-Rong restaurant was unusually quiet as Pucca slipped inside. Her uncles were busy cleaning up after the day's work, barely noticing her presence. Normally, she would've been bouncing around the kitchen, helping with dishes or taste-testing new recipes.

But tonight, she went straight to her room, closing the door softly behind her.

She sat on her bed, the trophy still clutched in her hands. Her mind replayed the moment Garu pushed her back over and over again. She'd never seen him like that, so... angry.

Her heart ached at the memory, but something else settled in too: understanding. Maybe Garu needed space. Maybe she'd been pushing too hard.

Her fingers traced the edges of the trophy as she took a deep breath. She wasn't giving up, not at all, but she could give him some time to breathe. She nodded to herself, determined.

If space was what Garu needed, she would give it to him... for now.

Back on the hill, Garu sat in the growing darkness, his thoughts swirling. His frustration had long since faded, leaving behind a gnawing sense of guilt.

He pictured Pucca walking away again, her head down, the playful sparkle in her eyes gone.

He let out a sigh, brushing his hair out of his face. Maybe I was too harsh.

The thought lingered in his mind, refusing to leave. He sat there for a long time, watching the stars blink into existence above him.

Finally, he stood up, brushing off his clothes. I'll apologize... tomorrow.

He started walking back toward the village, his steps slow and thoughtful.

He'd never say it out loud, but he knew the truth deep down: Pucca was always there for him, no matter what. And as much as he craved his space, he never wanted to see her hurt again.

' Because it hurt him ten times more. '

Chapter 18: Chapter 16: Words Left Unspoken

Chapter Text

The sky was painted in soft shades of orange and pink as the sun dipped below the horizon. Garu paced through the streets, scanning every corner and alleyway. His eyes darted around, searching desperately for Pucca. She was always easy to find, how was it possible she wasn't here now when he needed to apologize?

He checked every familiar spot, the training grounds, the Goh Rong restaurant, even the quiet hill where they often crossed paths. Nothing. His chest tightened with worry. Was she hiding from him? He turned toward Ching's house, the last place he could think of.

Pucca sat on Ching's bed, listening silently as her friend paced back and forth, her arms crossed tightly.

Ching's face was flushed with frustration, her ponytail bouncing with every angry step she took. "He's so annoying," she muttered. "Flashy, cocky, always flirting with every girl in the village. What's wrong with me? Why do I even like someone like that?" Pucca tilted her head, her dark eyes watching Ching thoughtfully.

"I mean, he barely even notices me," Ching continued, her voice cracking slightly. "I'm just... tired. Tired of loving someone who doesn't care." She stopped pacing and flopped onto her bed, covering her face with her hands. "It's exhausting."

Pucca leaned in and gently wrapped her arms around Ching, giving her a soft, comforting hug. For a moment, Ching said nothing, basking in the quiet support of her best friend. Then, with a deep breath, she admitted, "Maybe it's time to move on."

Pucca nodded slowly, though her mind drifted elsewhere. Ching's words echoed in her head, striking a chord she wasn't expecting. She felt the same ache in her chest, the same confusion. Maybe Garu didn't want her around after all. Maybe she'd pushed him too far.

Their moment was interrupted by a knock on the door.

"Ching, you have a visitor," Chang called from the other side. Ching sat up quickly, her eyes narrowing. "If it's Abyo, tell him to go away!" she yelled back.

There was a pause before Chang responded, "They're not here for you. They're here for Pucca."

"Tell him we don't want to see anyone," Ching said firmly, folding her arms again. Chang sighed, closing the door and turning to Garu, who stood awkwardly on the porch. "Sorry, kid. They're not in the mood for visitors." He shut the door with a soft thud, leaving Garu standing alone in the fading light.

For a second, Garu felt his heart twist painfully in his chest. He lowered his head, clenching the note he'd been carrying in his hand.

Garu leaped silently onto the roof of Ching's house, crouching low as he listened to the conversation inside. His heart raced as he heard Ching venting again. He didn't care much for Abyo's antics, but it was clear Ching was upset, and that Pucca was hurting too..

He fidgeted with the note in his hand. Should he knock on the window? Isn't it creepy that he's eavesdropping on them?

His thoughts spiraled into an internal conflict. He hated indecision, but right now, he wasn't sure what to do. He was still contemplating when he heard Ching's voice again.

"I need some air," she said with a huff. "I'm opening the window."

Garu's eyes widened in panic. He darted to the edge of the roof and, with a quick flick of his wrist, dropped the note in front of the window before disappearing into the shadows.

Ching pushed open the window, breathing in the cool evening breeze. Something fluttered at her feet, catching her eye.

"Huh?" She bent down and picked up the folded note. "What's this?"

Pucca leaned over, curious, as Ching unfolded it.

The handwriting was neat but rushed, the ink slightly smudged. The note was simple and to the point.

I'm sorry. Please meet me tomorrow. — Garu

Ching glanced at Pucca, then back at the note. "It looks like Garu has something to say."

Pucca's lips curved into a small smile, her cheeks warming. She clutched the note to her chest, her heart swelling with hope.

The next evening, Pucca walked toward Garu's house, the note clutched tightly in her hand. Her steps were slower than usual, her mind racing. Garu was waiting for her outside, sitting on the steps with his head down, fingers fidgeting with the edge of his sleeve. His usual calm was replaced by visible tension.

When Pucca stopped in front of him, he glanced up at her, his eyes wide with nervousness before quickly darting back to the ground. His cheeks flushed a faint pink as he rubbed the back of his neck.

For a few seconds, silence hung between them. Garu peeked at her from under his lashes, trying to gauge her mood. Pucca raised the note and wiggled it gently, her expression soft but curious.

Garu swallowed hard, tapping his fingers together before he pointed to his chest and then toward Pucca. His eyes flickered with uncertainty as he glanced at her, then quickly away again. His hands moved slowly, forming a small bow in front of him, his silent I'm sorry coming out much shyer than usual.

Pucca blinked, surprised. Her heart fluttered at the sight of him so vulnerable. She stood still for a moment, watching him before her lips curved into a warm smile. She didn't hesitate this time; she ran forward and wrapped her arms around him.

Garu froze, his entire body stiffening like a board. His face burned as his heart thudded wildly in his chest. He wanted to pull away out of instinct, but something stopped him. Slowly, carefully, he raised his arms and hugged her back, lightly at first, barely touching her. His hands hovered awkwardly until, little by little, he let himself relax.

His chin brushed against her shoulder, and his eyes fluttered closed. He wasn't sure why, but it felt... comforting. Safe.

Pucca pulled back slightly, her eyes searching his. She gave him a playful grin, one that said You're forgiven, silly.

Garu's lips twitched into the smallest, shyest smile. His gaze lingered on her for just a moment too long before he glanced away again, his blush deepening. He raised a hand and scratched his cheek awkwardly, unsure what to do next.

Pucca's eyes lit up mischievously. Without missing a beat, she leaned in, her lips puckering. Garu's eyes widened in panic.

Before she got too close, he bolted, his shoes barely touching the ground. His heart was racing for an entirely new reason now.

Pucca giggled, her laughter filling the night air, and immediately sprinted after him. '

Chapter 19: Chapter 17: Training Together

Chapter Text

The early morning mist clung to the trees around the village training grounds. Garu tightened the wrappings on his wrists, fully intent on a solo training session. He raised his sword, focusing on the target in front of him, until he noticed a familiar figure bouncing into view.

Pucca stood a few feet away, her big round eyes sparkling with excitement. She waved enthusiastically, holding a handmade sign above her head. The sign, written in bold red letters, read:

"TRAIN WITH ME?"

Garu froze. His usual instinct would've been to shake his head and walk away, but something about Pucca's hopeful expression made him hesitate. His grip on his sword loosened, and before he knew it, he gave her a small nod.

Pucca lit up instantly, her energy contagious. She tossed the sign aside and got into a ready stance, mimicking Garu's posture, though a bit clumsily. Garu raised a brow but took a step closer, adjusting her stance by gently nudging her arms into position. His fingertips barely brushed her sleeves, but it was enough to make his heart race.

Focus, he reminded himself, even though she wasn't the one distracting him anymore.

They began sparring, Garu taking it slow so Pucca could keep up. At first, it was lighthearted. Pucca exaggerated every move, trying to make him laugh. She swung wide with her wooden sword, spinning like a whirlwind until she tripped over her own feet and landed with a thud.

Garu blinked, lowering his weapon.

Pucca stayed on the ground for a moment, then dramatically lifted another sign she had tucked into her sleeve.

"I'M OKAY!"

A soft smile tugged at the corner of Garu's lips before he quickly wiped it away. He extended a hand to help her up, but the second she was back on her feet, she didn't let go. For a brief, heart-stopping moment, Pucca's small hand rested in his, warm and steady. Garu's breath hitched.

He pulled away gently, his heart thudding in his chest. Pucca tilted her head, watching him closely, her mischievous grin softening into something more curious.

They continued training, their movements naturally syncing up. Garu found himself stealing glances at her between strikes, unable to stop himself. Why does being around her feel... different now?

The morning sun grew warmer, and after an hour of sparring, they both sat down to catch their breath. Pucca leaned back on her hands, looking up at the sky, her face glowing from the workout. Garu glanced at her again, his gaze lingering longer than usual.

Pucca caught him looking and smirked, lifting another sign from behind her back.

"HAVING FUN?"

He nodded shyly, feeling his ears burn. He wasn't sure how or when it happened, but he realized he actually was. Training was never this... enjoyable before.

Pucca giggled and scribbled something quickly on the back of the sign. She held it up with both hands.

"LET'S DO THIS AGAIN."

Garu hesitated, then gave her a small but definite nod. Pucca beamed, her cheeks rosy, and Garu found himself smiling back, just a little.

For once, he didn't mind her constant presence. For once, being with her felt... just right. '

Chapter 20: Chapter 18: An Unlikely Alliance

Notes:

out of every chapter this has to be my fav

Chapter Text

The village air crackled with tension. Somewhere near the riverbank, Pucca stood still, her body tense, her usually pristine red dress torn and frayed. Her hair, usually pulled into two neat buns, now flowed wildly down her back, tangled from the scuffle. Across from her, Ring Ring smirked, her long blue hair whipping in the wind like a ribbon of danger.

"Pucca, darling," Ring Ring cooed mockingly, tapping her chin with a sharp nail. "You really should've stayed out of my way. I warned you what would happen if you kept chasing Garu!"

Pucca's eyes narrowed, her fists clenched at her sides. She lunged forward, but Ring Ring gracefully sidestepped, laughing all the while. "Cute," Ring Ring's heel clicked ominously against the ground as she advanced. "Face it, you can't win this time."

Meanwhile, in the nearby forest, Garu was surrounded by Tobe's ninjas. His katana slashed through the air, knocking one attacker back before pivoting to block another strike. His breath was steady, his eyes calm but sharp. Across the clearing, Tobe leaned lazily against a tree, watching the fight unfold with a smug grin.

"Garu, running isn't very honorable!" Tobe called out, tilting his head mockingly. "I thought you were a warrior!"

Garu ignored him, taking out another ninja with a swift kick, but he could feel himself tiring. This ambush had been more than he expected. His mind flickered briefly to Pucca, a flicker of unease creeping in.

He made a decision.

Pucca and Garu both ran, their instincts leading them back to each other. They met at the edge of the village, breathing hard, their eyes locking for a brief, charged moment.

Garu's gaze swept over Pucca's disheveled appearance, the tear in her dress, the scratches on her arms. His heart clenched, and for a second, he forgot how to breathe. She's hurt. He stepped closer, his eyes full of unspoken concern.

Pucca, however, had her own thoughts swirling. She noticed Garu's torn sleeve and the bruise forming on his cheek. Her usual bright expression darkened with fury. Who dared to hurt him?

Before she could think too much, two familiar voices interrupted their silent exchange.

"PUCCA! Oh--!" Ring Ring's shrill voice rang out as she stepped forward. "You think Garu will save you? How cute."

"Garu!" Tobe appeared from the opposite direction, adjusting his mask with a sneer. "Running isn't very honorable!"

There was a long pause.

.
.
.
.

Ring Ring and Tobe looked at each other, confusion flickering across their faces. "Wait... who are you?" Ring Ring asked, raising a perfectly arched brow.

"Excuse me?! Who are you?!" Tobe snapped back, gesturing wildly. "This is my fight!"

"No, no, no!" Ring Ring wagged a finger, morphing out of her yang form. "I'm here for Pucca. You can't just barge in with your whole ninja act and steal my moment!"

The two began bickering like children, their dramatic threats dissolving into petty insults.

Pucca and Garu exchanged a quick glance. Pucca's eyes sparkled mischievously. Garu nodded. Without a sound, they switched positions, Pucca darted toward Tobe while Garu faced off with Ring Ring.

Garu lunged at Ring Ring, his blade slicing through the air with deadly precision. But the blue haired "diva" barely moved, her body swaying just enough to evade his attacks, her lips curled into a knowing smirk. She twirled on the tips of her heels, effortlessly dodging each strike, her long hair flowing like silk in the wind.

"Oh, Garu~" she sang mockingly, her voice dripping with amusement. "You don't really want to hurt me, do you?"

Garu didn't respond. His movements remained fluid, calculated. Another sharp swing, aimed at her midsection, again, she twisted out of reach. The edges of her dress flared as she sidestepped, her hands folded behind her back as if this was nothing more than a dance to her.

"This is almost romantic," she teased, fluttering her lashes. "If you weren't so cold, maybe I'd--"

Her words were cut short as Garu's katana swiped dangerously close to her head, too close. The silver blade nicked the end of her long, elegant locks, a single strand floating to the ground.

For a second, everything went still.

Ring Ring's eye twitched.

Then, without warning, her hair shot forward like a living entity, strands hardening mid-air as they lashed toward Garu with the force of a whip. He barely had time to deflect, raising his blade to block the impact. The sheer strength behind it sent vibrations up his arm.

"You......" Her voice lost its usual flirtatious lilt, replaced by something sharp and dangerous. "You almost cut my HAIR?!"

With a furious shriek, she ascended into the air, hovering as her dress sleeves extended unnaturally, morphing into elongated limbs that lashed out at Garu. He was forced back, deflecting each rapid strike, his eyes narrowing as he adjusted to her shifting attack pattern.

Meanwhile, Pucca had already sent one of Tobe's ninjas flying with a kick.

The self proclaimed ninja master took a cautious step back, his fingers twitching slightly. It wasn't fear. No, of course not! He wasn't scared of some little girl, just... wary. Yes, wary.

Pucca tilted her head at him, her dark eyes gleaming with mischief.

Tobe swallowed.

"G-Get her!" he barked at his ninjas, masking the slight crack in his voice with forced confidence. The remaining henchmen hesitated for a split second, just enough time for Pucca to launch herself forward.

Tobe barely had time to react before she was in front of him. He stumbled back, his heart hammering when he realized just how close she was, too close.

"W-What are you--"

Her fists flew at him, forcing him into full combat mode. He ducked, dodging to the side as she came at him with relentless speed. He deflected one blow, then another, before countering with a swift kick. She caught his leg.

He paled.

Before she could throw him, he twisted mid air, using the momentum to land a solid strike against her arm. Pucca barely flinched. If anything, she looked amused.

Tobe felt his face grow hot. This was ridiculous.

"D-Don't think this means anything!" he snapped, wrenching himself free. "I-"

She lunged again.

His brain short-circuited for half a second when she got too close, her breath fanning against his cheek as she aimed a punch at his gut. He barely blocked in time. His mind screamed at him to focus, this was a fight! A fight he was supposed to be winning!

With renewed determination, he went on the offensive. But Pucca was relentless. The more he tried to gain the upper hand, the more she kept closing the distance between them. It was infuriating.

And maybe, just a little bit, distracting.

Across the battlefield, Garu was still locked in combat with Ring Ring, though the tide had shifted dramatically. Her hair coiled and lashed out like serpents, her sleeves acting as additional limbs to strike from unexpected angles. It was an overwhelming onslaught, but Garu remained unfazed.

Then, in the middle of a dodge, he noticed something.

For all her rage, Ring Ring's attacks were predictable. They relied on her emotions, and right now, she was furious. That was her weakness.

In one fluid motion, he pivoted, baiting her into attacking a specific direction. Her hair lashed toward him, and at the last second, he twisted his blade, angling it just right. The strands wrapped around the katana, and with a sharp pull, he sliced downward.

A large chunk of her hair was severed instantly.

The scream she let out was downright bloodcurdling.

"You---!!!!!" Her entire body trembled, eyes burning with unspeakable fury. "HOW DARE YOU!?!"

Garu braced himself.

She let out an earpiercing operatic wail, the sheer force sending shockwaves through the battlefield. Garu was pushed back, struggling to hold his ground as debris flew around them.

On the other side, Pucca and Tobe had stopped mid-fight to cover their ears.

Tobe gritted his teeth. "What is this horrible screeching sound??!"

Pucca, unfazed, took advantage of his momentary distraction. Her fist connected with his stomach, sending him tumbling backward. His head spun, his pride wounded more than anything.

This day was turning out to be a nightmare.

Ring Ring, meanwhile, had recovered enough to attempt another attack. But Garu was faster. He rushed forward, closing the gap between them before she could react.

And then...he switched.

With a sharp movement, he dodged past her and went straight for Tobe.

At the same time, Pucca launched herself at Ring Ring.

Both enemies barely had time to register the change before they were forced to adapt.

Tobe's eyes widened as Garu came at him full force. "W-Wait a minute--!"

He barely parried the first strike, then the next. Garu was different from Pucca, he was methodical, precise. Where Pucca overwhelmed with brute force, Garu attacked with the calculated intent of a true warrior. Tobe hated it.

Still, he wasn't about to let himself be defeated.

Meanwhile, Ring Ring was struggling.

Pucca wasn't like Garu. She didn't hesitate, didn't hold back. If anything, she seemed to enjoy this.

Ring Ring tried using her hair again, but Pucca grabbed it mid air and yanked, hard.

Ring Ring shrieked. "LET GO!"

Pucca yanked harder.

"STOP IT, YOU LITTLE B--"

With a final pull, Pucca swung Ring Ring by her own hair and sent her crashing into a tree.

Silence.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then, Tobe, still locked in combat with Garu, risked a glance toward Ring Ring's crumpled form.

He turned back to Garu, swallowing hard. "Uh."

Garu narrowed his eyes.

Tobe immediately resumed fighting.

But it was no use. Within moments, Pucca had rejoined Garu's side, and the two of them fought in perfect synchrony. The battle had shifted in their favor.

Realizing this, Tobe and Ring Ring did the only thing they could do.

They ran.

Tobe, still nursing his bruised stomach, cursed under his breath. "This isn't over!"

Ring Ring, clutching her hair in horror, shrieked, "YOU'LL PAY FOR THIS!"

And just like that, they were gone.

Garu exhaled, shaking his head.

The battle was over.

Pucca dusted herself off and looked over at Garu, her hair still a wild mess, her cheeks flushed from the fight. Garu lingered for a moment longer than usual, his eyes softer than before. His gaze traced her face, lingering on the small scratch on her cheek.

She's okay, he reassured himself, but the thought wasn't as comforting as it should've been. Seeing her in danger had stirred something deep inside him, something stronger than worry.

Pucca tilted her head, giving him a questioning look.

Garu quickly looked away, trying to hide the warmth creeping up his face.

Pucca smiled knowingly, brushing her hair into a messy bun. She grabbed his hand and gave it a light squeeze before turning back toward the village. Garu followed, his heart beating faster than it ever had before.

For once, he didn't want the moment to end. '

Chapter 21: Chapter 19: Quietly understanding feelings

Chapter Text

The riverbank was calm that afternoon, the sun hanging low in the sky and casting a golden glow across the water. The village felt quieter than usual... as if holding its breath. Garu sat on the soft grass, his legs crossed and eyes focused on the rippling current in front of him. He liked it here, peaceful, undisturbed. No battles, no ninjas... no chaos.

But today, Pucca was there too, sitting just a few feet away from him. Unlike her usual energetic self, she was still, watching the river with wide, curious eyes. For once, there was no chasing, no wild attempts to catch him, just the quiet hum of nature surrounding them.

Garu glanced at her from the corner of his eye. He had grown used to her constant presence over the years, but something had changed. Pucca wasn't just a whirlwind of mischief anymore. She had a calmness about her, a warmth that wrapped around him like a soft blanket.

He hesitated, then slowly reached out and softly took her hand.

The moment felt electric, even in its gentleness. Pucca's eyes widened in surprise, her cheeks blooming with warmth. Neither of them moved for a second, both caught off guard by the unexpected closeness.

Garu's pulse quickened. He could feel the softness of her hand against his, her fingers tiny compared to his own. He let it linger for a few moments before pulling away, his face flushing red. He quickly turned his attention back to the river, pretending to be calm, but inside he was anything but.

Pucca, however, couldn't stop smiling. Her heart fluttered in her chest, happiness bubbling up inside her.

They sat in silence for a while longer, the moment stretching out between them. Garu found himself lost in thought, memories swirling to the surface, memories he hadn't thought about in a long time.

Garu had always been a solitary kid, raised with strict discipline in the ways of the ninja. His parents had left the village when he was very young, leaving him in the care of the village elders. They trained him and molded him into the quiet, determined warrior he is today. Duty had always come first, and Garu never questioned it.

But as he grew older, the weight of that duty became heavier. He had learned to push people away, thinking it was safer that way. It was easier to be alone than to risk losing someone important.

Then Pucca came into his life, loud, unpredictable, and completely unafraid to break down the walls he'd built around himself. At first, she was just a strange girl who wouldn't leave him alone. But over time, she had become something much more.

Garu glanced at her again, a soft smile tugging at the corner of his lips before he quickly hid it.

Pucca noticed his fleeting smile and giggled quietly, swinging her feet playfully. She leaned back on her hands, feeling the breeze against her face. It was a perfect afternoon, the kind of moment she never wanted to forget.

The sun was beginning to set, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange. Garu stood up and dusted off his clothes, gesturing for Pucca to follow him. She hopped to her feet, still glowing with happiness, and fell into step beside him.

They walked back toward the village in comfortable silence, their shoulders brushing every now and then. Garu found himself wishing the walk would last just a little longer.

For the first time, Garu understood something he had been too stubborn to admit before, he liked having Pucca around. Maybe not in the wild, chaotic way she usually was, but in these quiet moments where everything just felt right.

And for the first time in a long while, Garu felt truly at peace.

For the first time, Garu understood something he had been too stubborn to admit before, he liked having Pucca around. Maybe not in the wild, chaotic way she usually was, but in these quiet moments where everything just felt right.

Garu sat on the rooftop, watching the horizon. But his eyes kept drifting downward, where Pucca was busy sweeping the front steps. She moved with her usual energy, her twin buns swaying as she worked. Despite himself, Garu felt a soft smile tug at his lips. He quickly wiped it away, shaking his head. What was wrong with him lately?

He had always avoided her, running, dodging, hiding, but now, the idea of Pucca not being around made his chest feel... odd. Empty, almost. He didn't know how to deal with it, so he did what came naturally: he lingered, staying close even when there was no reason to.

Pucca paused her sweeping and glanced up, catching Garu staring. He immediately looked away, pretending to inspect a nearby roof tile. Pucca tilted her head, curious, a small blush rising to her cheeks.

Ching was unusually quiet during practice. Abyo noticed it right away. She usually had some playful banter or encouragement, but today, she seemed distracted. When he performed a particularly flashy move, expecting a cheer or at least a clap, Ching barely glanced his way.

"Hey," Abyo called, leaning on his nunchakus. "You okay? You've been acting... different."

Ching hesitated. "I'm fine," she replied, avoiding his gaze. "Just focusing on training."

Abyo raised an eyebrow. "You sure? You're usually all about teamwork, but you've been kinda distant lately."

She tightened her grip on her sword. "I said I'm fine."

He frowned, but before he could press further, Ching turned and walked away. Abyo watched her go, confused and a little hurt. Ching had always been one of his biggest supporters. Why did it feel like she was pulling away from him now?

Pucca wandered through the market, picking out vegetables for the restaurant. Garu followed quietly behind her, keeping a watchful eye. When a passing cart almost bumped into her, he reached out instinctively, grabbing her wrist and pulling her back.

Pucca looked up at him, surprised. Garu's grip lingered for a moment longer than necessary before he quickly let go, his face turning red. Pucca smiled softly, her heart fluttering.

They continued walking, this time with Garu staying just a little closer. At one point, he even helped carry her basket, his eyes darting around nervously as if someone might see him.

Abyo sat on a bench, tossing a pebble back and forth in his hands. Ching's earlier behavior bothered him more than he wanted to admit. Normally, he wouldn't dwell on stuff like this, he was Abyo, after all, always laid-back and cool, but something about Ching's distance felt... wrong.

Garu appeared in the distance, lost in his thoughts. Abyo grinned, standing up. "Hey, Garu! What's up with you, man? You've been hanging around Pucca a lot lately. Don't tell me you're starting to like her or something!"

Garu froze, his eyes widening. Abyo laughed, nudging him. "C'mon, you can tell me. No big deal."

Ching, who had just returned from her walk, raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, Garu. You have been acting weird around her."

Garu scratched the back of his head, his face growing redder by the second. He shook his head quickly, trying to deny it, but his body betrayed him. His eyes unconsciously drifted toward Pucca's direction, and Ching caught the soft expression on his face.

"Uh huh," Ching said knowingly. "Right. No feelings at all."

Abyo laughed harder. "Dude, you're so obvious!"

Flustered, Garu waved them off and walked away, his heart racing. He didn't need to hear it from them, he already knew something was changing.

' But hearing it out loud made it feel more real. And that scared him just a little. '

Chapter 22: Chapter 20: The Pre-Festival Day

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The village buzzed with excitement as preparations for the festival kicked into full swing. Lanterns were strung from rooftops, and colorful banners swayed gently in the breeze. The smell of freshly cooked festival treats wafted through the air, mingling with the sound of laughter and chatter.

Pucca moved through the market square with purpose, balancing a tray of ingredients for the Goh Rong restaurant. Her uncles barked out orders as they prepared for one of the busiest nights of the year. Despite the chaos, Pucca wore a bright smile, her eyes lighting up at the thought of the upcoming celebration.

Not far away, Garu stood on a rooftop, quietly observing. His gaze followed Pucca's every move, and every so often, his heart gave a little leap when their eyes almost met. He quickly ducked out of sight each time, only to peek again moments later.

He didn't understand why he felt so nervous. His palms felt clammy, and his chest tightened whenever he thought about the festival. Something inside him told him that tonight would be different, and important.

Abyo was mid flip when he caught sight of Garu. He smirked, sensing something was off. "Yo, Garu!" he called, jogging over. "You've been acting all weird lately. Like, extra quiet. Even for you."

Garu crossed his arms, giving him a blank stare.

Abyo leaned in, grinning. "Don't think I haven't noticed. You've been watching her, haven't you?"

Garu's face flushed. He quickly turned away, pretending to inspect a loose roof tile.

"Ha! I knew it!" Abyo slapped him on the back. "You like her!" He paused, then added with a smirk, "You gonna do something about it at the festival?"

Garu hesitated, then pulled a small slip of paper from his pocket. Carefully, he scribbled a note on it and folded it neatly. Abyo peeked over his shoulder, curious. "Ohhh, what's that? A love note?"

Garu shot him a warning glare.

"Alright, alright! I'll back off," Abyo said, raising his hands.

Ching carried a bundle of decorations, her mind elsewhere. Lately, she'd felt... off. Her feelings toward Abyo had been more confusing than ever. She had always admired him, but the way he flirted with every girl in the village made her feel invisible.

As she tied a ribbon to a lantern, Abyo appeared, flashing his signature grin. "Hey, Ching!" he called. "So... I was thinking. The festival's coming up. Wanna go with me?"

Ching blinked in surprise. For a moment, her heart skipped a beat. But then she remembered all the times Abyo had flirted with someone else without a second thought.

"No, thanks," she said, forcing a smile. "I've got plans with Pucca."

Abyo froze. "Oh... yeah, cool. No big deal." He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "It's not like I care or anything."

Ching raised an eyebrow. "Okay...."

As she walked away, Abyo's confident facade cracked for just a moment. His shoulders sagged, and he muttered under his breath, "Why does that actually sting?"

But before he could dwell on it, he shook his head. He had to focus on being Garu's wingman tonight.

Pucca returned from the market, placing the last of the festival supplies on the counter. As she wiped her hands, a soft rustle caught her attention. She turned to find a folded piece of paper sitting on the counter.

Her eyes widened when she saw Garu's handwriting. The note was simple but clear: "Meet me at the festival."

Pucca's heart fluttered. She clutched the note to her chest, her cheeks glowing. Something about this felt different, special.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the village in a golden glow, Garu stood at the edge of the square, watching the lanterns light up one by one. His pulse quickened. Tonight was the night.

' He just hoped he'd find the courage to do what he'd been wanting to do for so long. '

Chapter 23: Chapter 21: The Festival

Chapter Text

The village of Sooga had transformed into a dazzling wonderland. Lanterns of every color swayed in the breeze, bathing the streets in warm, golden light. The smell of roasted chestnuts and sweet dumplings filled the air, while lively music echoed from every corner. Performers spun in circles, their silk ribbons fluttering like petals, and vendors called out, advertising their finest festival treats!

Inside Ching's house, Pucca sat quietly in front of a mirror as Ching braided her hair. Both girls wore beautiful festival outfits, Ching in a soft blue dress decorated with blossoms, and Pucca in her usual red, with fresh ribbons tied into her pigtails.

"You excited?" Ching asked with a smile, though her tone felt a bit forced.

Pucca nodded but kept glancing at the note tucked in her pocket. "Meet me at the festival." Garu's words echoed in her mind, making her heart race.

"You should be. Tonight's a big night! We're going to shop and eat delicious food!!" Ching added, catching the dreamy look in Pucca's eyes.

Pucca gave her a shy smile but noticed how Ching's expression dimmed for a moment.

Pucca gave Ching a look that said, You okay?

Ching shrugged. "I'm fine," she said quickly. "Let's go! The festival's waiting for us!"

The streets were packed with villagers, all dressed in their best. Pucca and Ching wandered through the market stalls, admiring handmade trinkets and sampling sticky rice cakes. Performers danced in the square, firecrackers popped in the distance, and children laughed as they chased each other with lanterns shaped like animals.

But Pucca's mind kept drifting back to Garu.

"Oh Pucca," Ching said. "I'm going to check that super cute dress right there!!" She started jumping up and down in excitement. "Ooh!! That dress is super cute!! So much better than the one I have right now!! Do you wanna come with--" Ching looked to her side and didn't see Pucca.

She looked around and saw her walking into a crowd. Ching giggled, "She must be looking for Garu." she made her way to her pretty dress.

Pucca's heart leaped when she finally spotted Garu in the crowd. He stood near the lantern tree, his dark eyes searching until they locked onto hers. Time seemed to slow as they held each other's gaze, the noise of the festival fading into the background.

Garu took a deep breath, his nerves almost getting the best of him. But tonight, he couldn't back down. He stepped forward, weaving through the crowd until he was right in front of her. Pucca blinked up at him, her cheeks glowing.

Without a word, Garu gently took her hand, his touch soft yet steady. His eyes held a tenderness that spoke louder than any words could. Slowly, he leaned in, his heart pounding as he pressed a soft, heartfelt kiss to her lips.

The world around them seemed to disappear for that brief, magical moment. Fireworks exploded in the sky, painting the night in lovely vibrant colors.

Garu pulled back, his face flushed, but he didn't let go of her hand. For the first time, he smiled, a small, shy smile meant just for her.

Pucca's heart soared. She squeezed his hand, unable to hide her happiness.

Still holding her hand, Garu led her through the crowd, his confidence growing with every step. For once, he didn't mind the attention.

Abyo leaned against a booth, his arms crossed, watching Ching from a distance. He couldn't believe she rejected him! She had been acting strange all evening, distant and cold. She hadn't even reacted when he flipped across the stage during the performance. Normally, she would've cheered and clapped for him, but tonight she didn't even glance his way.

His eyes narrowed as he watched a boy approach Ching. The boy bowed slightly and asked her to dance. Abyo clenched his jaw. Before Ching could respond, he swooped in, placing himself between them. "I'll take it from here," he said confidently.

Ching stared at him, unimpressed. "Seriously?"

Abyo grinned. "Come on, it's festival tradition! Dance with me Ching!"

Reluctantly, Ching allowed him to lead her onto the dance floor. The music played softly around them, and for the first time in forever, there was no teasing, no banter. Just a strange, quiet tension. Ching's heart raced as she realized how close they were. Abyo's usual cocky grin had faded, replaced by something softer, something... serious.

Abyo found himself stealing glances at her, his grip tightening slightly around her hand. He didn't understand why, but this moment felt different. Real.

"Ching," he started to say, but the words got stuck in his throat. Instead, he just held her a little closer.

The dance ended, but the strange feeling lingered between them.

Ching pulled away, her cheeks flushed. "Thanks..." she took a deep breath, " I...I... better look for Pucca..." she said quickly before walking off.

Abyo watched her go, rubbing the back of his neck. "What is wrong with me?" he muttered.

But deep down, he knew the answer.

Garu and Pucca stood beneath the glowing lanterns, their fingers still intertwined. Garu felt a strange warmth in his chest, a feeling he hadn't experienced in a long time. Pucca smiled at him, her eyes sparkling. For once, there was no chasing, no chaos.

Just the quiet understanding that they felt the same.

' The festival roared on around them, but they didn't care. This moment was theirs, and neither of them wanted it to end. '
