Work Text:

There was something sweet, almost domestic, to sitting in the TARDIS doors, watching over the expanse of the universe from and angle she'd never seen before. Yaz supposed it was made nicer by the picnic blanket dangling out into space under their legs. And the company. Oh the company made it oh so much better.

"To us," Rose said, holding out of a flute of wine. They'd picked it up at a market on a moon. The whole thing had become a trade outpost, and just in the section they'd explored there'd been anything and everything they could have imagined.

"To us," Yaz and the Doctor echoed, tipping their glasses together. By Rose's count, which was apparently more accurate than the Time Lord's count (though Yaz had decided to not ask how or why that was) they'd been dating for a year.

It seemed unreal. Yaz, she'd never thought her life would turn the way it had. And yet, there she was. Two girlfriends, one an alien and the other not really human anymore. Both older than seemed possible. And yet Yaz had slipped into their life so easily.

She knew she didn't know everything and the Doctor and Rose, but she knew enough. She knew enough to love them. Enough to enjoy sitting cramped together in the doors of the TARDIS doors. Enough to enjoy the simple things they got to enjoy together.

"We should fling the TARDIS into the heart of a super-nova," Rose suggested. Yaz laughed suddenly, but on the other side of Rose the Doctor hummed.

"It can be fun," she agreed. Yaz looked over at her around Rose.

"Are you serious?" she asked.

"Oh it's brilliant!" Rose said. "It's like setting the TARDIS on random, but she has absolutely no say in where we end up either."

"Does the TARDIS normally have a say in where we go?" Yaz asked. Rose nodded as the Doctor shrugged.

"The Doctor can be a bad driver, but she's not anywhere near as bad as you might think from how often we end up somewhere random," Rose said.

"Was that a compliment Rose?" the Doctor asked, grinning at her. Rose laughed slightly, but nodded.

"It was a vague compliment to your reckless driving," she agreed. Yaz laughed slightly.

"Is that a good idea? The complimenting her driving I mean," Yaz asked. Rose shrugged slightly. The Doctor pouted at them.

"Right then, when the wine glasses are empty, I'll fly right into the heart of an exploding sun and we'll ride the shock-wave out," the Doctor announced. Yaz watched as the Doctor tilted her flute back and took a gulp of the wine. She pulled a face, and Rose started to laugh.

"Hm, not nice," the Doctor said, passing the flute to Rose.

"You're not a wine person dear," Rose reminded her. Yaz laughed at them and took a sip from her wine glass. The Doctor slumped against Rose and sighed.

They'd ride out a shock-wave later. For now they could sit in the TARDIS doors, a blanket under them dangling out into the expanse of space, two of them drinking wine from a moon. As far as anniversary dates went, Yaz wasn't sure anything would ever top it.
