Maya, Riley, and Farkle all convinced Mr. Matthews to take the history class to Seattle to celebrate getting the highest test scores in the state. The small group of friends was very excited, and they guessed it was cool the rest of the class was joining them.
Riley decided to sit next to Maya on the plane, Farkle next to Smackle, and Lucas next to Zay. The flight was just from New York to Seattle, and was a private jet, so it wouldn’t take long.
As they were settled into the plane, the pilot told them they would be experiencing some turbulence and may need to divert the route, but nobody really paid attention. Smackle and Farkle were locked in an intense game of Chess, Lucas and Zay were contemplating some ranking of country artists, and Riley was asleep on Maya’s shoulder.
Suddenly, though, the plane started to fall, and the wing caught on fire.
“Brace for impact, we’re going down!” one of the pilots called out over the intercom system.
Mr. Matthews got up then, helping kids put on masks and other things, but as the plane started to lurch, Farkle pulled him into a seat.
“We all need to sit down, sir!” Farkle yelled.
The students lurched and tried to brace themselves as the plane slammed into the ground as the plane burst into flames and split in two.

Maya stumbled out of the plane with Riley by her side, Farkle was in front, and she thought most of the others were around somewhere. Some had died in the crash, others were nowhere to be seen. The group felt scattered and confused.
A piercing scream broke through the carnage, Mr. Matthews.
Riley and Maya ran over to the former’s father, and she sat at his head.
“Dad?” Riley cried, looking at his leg, or lack thereof.
Mr. Matthews’ leg was crushed under a broken part of the wing of the plane, and some of the students, specifically, Lucas and Zay, were trying to remove it.
Mr. Matthews screamed again, as the plane was lifted from his leg, which was practically gone.
Riley promptly passed out, her eyes barely being able to take it, and her father following soon after.
As Mr. Matthews stayed unconscious, and bled out, Smackle approached with an axe and belt, and promptly chopped the teacher’s leg off.
