Work Text:
Wei Ying ran through the field of wildflowers, his laughter light in the air, his sleeves fluttering as though they, too, were caught in the wind.
“Lan Zhan, look!” he called out, stopping suddenly. A butterfly, had landed on his sleeve, its wings quivering with every breath. Wei Ying watched it in awe, his eyes bright with wonder.
Lan Zhan stood several paces away, quiet, his gaze locked on Wei Ying.
Wei Ying smiled at the butterfly, then glanced at Lan Zhan. “Do you think butterflies can recognize beauty?”
Lan Zhan blinked, his voice barely a whisper. “Perhaps.”
Wei Ying grinned, stepping closer. “Then why does it always land on you?”
The butterfly fluttered once more, its wings catching the light before it gently landed on Lan Zhan’s wrist. Wei Ying’s smile softened, and for a moment, everything around them seemed to disappear. Only the butterfly, the silence, and the soft fluttering of his heart remained.
Lan Zhan’s fingers remained still, as if unwilling to disturb the fragile moment.
His heart, too, remained still.
Wei Ying’s words echoed in his mind, and for the first time, he understood.
The butterfly had found its way to him—because of Wei Ying.
