Work Text:

Warm sunny days were few and far between this time of year in Scotland, anytime of year honestly, and Sookie was making the most of it. Thank Merlin it's a Saturday, truly, because she would have skipped classes for weather like this and she doesn't need to give her head of house any more reasons to give her detention.

She was currently sitting out in the middle of the Quidditch field, transfigured beach chair beneath her, a bottle of lemonade just out of reach. A pickup game of quidditch zipped around above her, the Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors well used to her sunny day antics.

Sookie sighed as she applied a third or maybe fourth layer of sun potion after she stopped the chirping of her wand. If Scotland weren't so damp and cold and cloudy she would have gone inside by now, but now she had to make up for lost tanning time. She really should have been bent over a desk working on her Potions essay, Tara would have her head when she found out she hadn't finished it yet.

Like he was the mind reader, her brother circled overhead, covering her in shadow. "Don't you have homework to do or something, Sookie?"

"Don't you have a quidditch team to be training, Jason?" She asked, squinting up at him. "Instead of blocking out my sunlight and dulling my tan?"

He descended towards her, close enough to get off the broom, flying lazy shapes around her. "We're taking a break. You know, you're gonna burn if you stay out here much longer."

"Bite your tongue. Stackhouses' don't burn, we just keep tanning."

"Yeah. I know." And of course he did, his constant golden tan glinting in the sunlight. It was easier to tan when you spent hours running drills every day, though how he talked his head of house into letting him wear what he did she would never know. As it was, she was comfortably covered in about 4 illusion charms in case a professor walked by. "Homework?" He asked again.

"Yes," she admitted, reaching over for her lemonade. "Potions essay, 11 inches. I'll get around to it."

"When?"

"When the sun goes down."

Jason threw his head back, his cackle echoing across the quidditch pitch. "Fine, fine. I'll leave it alone then. Merlin knows you're more likely to finish your homework than I am."

She gave a short nod of agreement, well aware of how often her brother forgot to turn in an assignment. "How's Hoyt getting along up there? Any better at guarding the goal posts?"

"Yeah he's," Jason started, rubbing the back of his neck and looking towards the boy in question. "Well he's getting the hang of things, I think."

"He doesn't look like he's gonna fall off his broom anymore," Sookie offered.

"Exactly. Improvements. Just gotta keep them coming."

They sat in silence for a moment before Sookie handed her lemonade to her brother, watching as he drank what he would describe a sip and she would describe as the whole damn bottle. He was lucky she had more.

"Where are your Slytherins today?"

"They aren't My Slytherins."

"Keep telling yourself that. Where are they?"

She smiled at him as he sat in the grass beside her. "They had some project they wanted to work on. Said they'd come get me just before sundown."

He made a soft noise of acknowledgment, looking around the field before turning his eyes back on her. "What happens after graduation?" He asked, like there was a simple answer.

"I've got 2 years before that's a concern," she said, ignoring his intention.

"You know damn well that wasn't what I was getting at. Godric graduates in a few more months, Eric the year after. What happens next?"

Sookie fished another lemonade out of her bag, motioning with it to the quidditch players obviously waiting for their leader. "How about you get back up there before they riot, and I'll worry about the future of my relationships?" She knew she sounded defensive.

Jason took one last drink from her new lemonade bottle before flying back up to the right altitude, offering her a comforting smile before he went.

He was right, she knew. Things would be changing at the end of the year and no matter how much she told herself it would be fine she just wasn't sure she believed it anymore.

Two more sun potion applications later, two different shadows blocked the last valiant sun beam she'd managed to find. "Get out of the way, Jason," she grouched, refusing to open her eyes.

"Wrong blonde," Eric said, his voice low. "Not sure how you could confuse us though. I wouldn't be caught dead in red."

"Did you have a nice tanning day?" Godric asked, amusement clear in his tone.

Sookie opened her eyes, peering up at her boys and offering them a lazy smile. "I did. It's a shame that it's supposed to rain tomorrow."

"Oh yes. Awful. However will we entertain ourselves on such an expectedly dreary day?"

"I expect you have an idea in mind," she drawled, standing and watching as Godric collected her things.

They led her slowly from the quidditch pitch, ignoring the Great Hall on their way to whatever destination they had in mind. They were actively occluding against her, so whatever they had waiting for her on the seventh floor had to be amazing.

She hadn't been expecting a magically appearing door.

She hadn't been expecting such a big bed either.
