Chapter Text

The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the jujutsu school grounds. The air was calm, a stark contrast to the storm of curses and battles that had raged for so long. Yuji sat on the steps of the main building, staring at the horizon. His mind was quiet for the first time in what felt like forever.

Nobara’s voice broke the silence. “You’re not brooding, are you? Because that’s my thing.”

Yuji turned to see her walking toward him, her hands in her pockets and her usual confident smirk on her face. Her hair was a little longer now, and she had a small scar above her eyebrow—a reminder of everything they’d been through. But she was still Nobara, sharp and unapologetic.

“Brooding? Me? Nah,” Yuji said, grinning. “Just… thinking.”

“Thinking?” Nobara raised an eyebrow as she sat down beside him. “That’s dangerous for you. Careful, your brain might overheat.”

Yuji laughed, the sound warm and genuine. “Yeah, yeah. You’re hilarious.”

They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the weight of everything unsaid hanging between them. Finally, Nobara spoke again, her tone softer this time. “It’s weird, isn’t it? Not having to fight for our lives every day.”

“Yeah,” Yuji agreed, his gaze drifting back to the horizon. “It’s like… I don’t even know what to do with myself now. Feels like I should be doing something, you know?”

Nobara snorted. “You could start by cleaning your room. I walked by it earlier, and it’s a disaster.”

“Hey! It’s not that bad,” Yuji protested, though he knew she was right. “Besides, you’re one to talk. I’ve seen your closet. It’s like a cursed spirit exploded in there.”

Nobara elbowed him lightly, but she was smiling. “Shut up. At least I have style.”

They both laughed, the sound echoing in the quiet evening. But as the laughter faded, the silence felt heavier. Yuji glanced at Nobara, his expression turning serious. “I’m glad you’re here, Nobara. I mean… I’m glad we both made it.”

Nobara looked at him, her smirk softening into something more genuine. “Yeah, me too. You’re not so bad to have around, I guess. When you’re not being an idiot.”

Yuji grinned. “High praise coming from you.”

She rolled her eyes but didn’t argue. Instead, she leaned back on her hands, her gaze fixed on the sky. “You know, for a while there, I wasn’t sure if we’d ever get to just… sit like this. No curses, no Sukuna, no end-of-the-world crap. Just… this.”

Yuji nodded, his chest tightening at the memory of everything they’d lost. “Yeah. But we did it. We’re here.”

Nobara turned to him, her eyes searching his face. “You’re not just saying that, are you? You’re really okay?”

Yuji hesitated, then shrugged. “I don’t know. I think I’m getting there. It’s just… a lot, you know? But having you guys around helps. Having *you* around helps.”

Nobara’s cheeks flushed slightly, and she looked away, pretending to be annoyed. “Don’t get all sappy on me, Yuji. It doesn’t suit you.”

He laughed, scratching the back of his head. “Yeah, you’re probably right. But, uh… thanks. For everything.”

Nobara sighed dramatically, but there was a fondness in her eyes. “You’re such an idiot. But… you’re welcome. And, for the record, I’m glad you’re here too. Even if you’re a pain in my ass most of the time.”

Yuji’s grin widened. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“You would,” she muttered, but she was smiling.

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. For a moment, they just sat there, side by side, the weight of the past slowly giving way to the promise of the future.

Then Nobara stood up, brushing off her skirt. “Come on, idiot. Let’s get something to eat. I’m starving.”

Yuji jumped to his feet, his energy returning. “Yeah! I could go for some ramen.”

Nobara smirked. “Ramen? Really? You have no taste. We’re getting sushi.”

“Sushi? That’s so expensive!” Yuji protested.

---

Yuji protested, jogging to catch up with Nobara.

"Too bad. You're paying," Nobara said, already walking ahead. "Besides, Maki's treating. She won big at the pachinko parlor. Apparently, exorcising curses hones your gambling skills too."

Yuji raised an eyebrow. "Maki? Since when does she gamble?"

Just then, they rounded a corner and saw Maki, leaning against a lamppost, arms crossed, looking impatient. "Took you two long enough," she grunted. "I'm starving. And Panda's already eaten half the appetizers."

"Panda's here too?" Yuji asked, surprised.

"Where else would I be?" a familiar voice chimed in. Panda emerged from the shadows, holding a small plate piled high with what looked suspiciously like fish-shaped crackers. "Maki promised me all-you-can-eat salmon. And maybe some tuna. And definitely some eel."

"You'd think after all this," Maki sighed, "we'd all have better things to do than spend our first peaceful evening together at an overpriced sushi restaurant." But a small smile played on her lips.

As they walked towards the restaurant, Yuji noticed Nobara's hand brush against his. He glanced at her, and she gave him a quick, almost shy smile before looking away.  Weird, he thought, but I like it.

Inside the restaurant, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. They were seated at a large table in a private room. The aroma of fresh fish and seaweed filled the air. As they settled in, Yuji caught Nobara looking at her reflection in the polished surface of the table. She touched the small scar above her eyebrow, a fleeting shadow crossing her face.

He remembered the look in her eyes during the Culling Game, the sheer determination and resilience. She's stronger than she thinks, he thought. We all are.

"Hey," he said softly, leaning towards her. "That scar looks badass, you know?"

Nobara smirked. "Thanks. It's a reminder of all the fun we had." She winked, but Yuji saw a flicker of something deeper in her eyes.

Maki cleared her throat. "Alright, lovebirds, can we order already? I'm not getting any younger, and neither is the fish."

Yuji and Nobara both blushed slightly and looked away, but the playful jab didn't feel awkward. It felt… comfortable. Like they were a real family.

As the evening progressed, the conversation flowed easily. They reminisced about old missions, laughed at Panda's ridiculous stories, and even talked about their hopes for the future. The weight of the past was still there, a shared understanding, but it didn't define them. They were moving forward, together.

At one point, Yuji and Nobara both reached for the same piece of salmon nigiri. Their hands brushed again, and this time, they lingered for a moment, a silent acknowledgment passing between them. Yuji's heart skipped a beat. He wasn't sure what it meant, but he knew he liked it.

Later, as they were leaving the restaurant, Maki clapped Yuji on the back. "You know, Itadori," she said, a mischievous glint in her eye, "you've changed. You seem… less likely to run headfirst into danger without thinking."

"Hey, I still do that sometimes," Yuji protested.

"Yeah, but now you have Nobara to drag you back by the collar," Panda chuckled.

Nobara rolled her eyes. "He's more likely to drag me into trouble."

"True," Yuji admitted. "But that's what friends are for, right?" He looked at Nobara, his gaze lingering a little too long.

Nobara met his gaze, a soft smile gracing her lips. "Right," she said.

As they walked off into the night, the city lights reflecting in their eyes, there was a sense of hope, a feeling that even after everything, they had a chance to build something new, something stronger. And Yuji knew, deep down, that whatever the future held, he wouldn't face it alone. He had Nobara, Maki, Panda… and maybe, just maybe, something more with Nobara.

Maki, walking slightly ahead with Yuta, suddenly stopped. "Hey, you guys go on ahead. Yuta and I are going to… grab some air."

Yuji raised an eyebrow. "Grab some air? At this hour?"

Maki just shrugged, a faint blush creeping up her neck. "Yeah, well… we have some… things to discuss."

Yuta, usually so composed, seemed a bit flustered. He avoided eye contact with Yuji and Nobara, focusing instead on a distant point in the sky. "It's… uh… important."

Nobara smirked, catching on immediately. "Sure, 'important.' Don't stay out too late, you two."

Maki shot her a playful glare, but there was a definite warmth in her eyes as she looked at Yuta. "We won't," she said, before turning and walking off with Yuta towards a nearby park.

Yuji and Nobara exchanged a look. "Something's definitely going on there," Yuji whispered.

Nobara nodded, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "Took them long enough."

They continued walking, the silence between them comfortable. Yuji glanced at Nobara, noticing how the city lights reflected in her eyes, making them sparkle. She's really beautiful, he thought, a realization that had been slowly dawning on him.

"So," he said, trying to sound casual, "what do you think Maki and Yuta are talking about?"

Nobara shrugged. "Probably about how they're both ridiculously strong and could take on any curse that comes their way."

"Or," Yuji suggested, "maybe about how they're both secretly crushing on each other."

Nobara laughed. "You think so?"

"I don't think so," Yuji said, a playful glint in his eyes. "I know so."

Nobara elbowed him lightly. "You're so nosy."

"Hey, I'm just observant," Yuji protested.

They walked in comfortable silence for a while until Yuji spoke up. "You know, it's good to see everyone again. Especially after…" He trailed off, the unspoken "after everything" hanging in the air.

Nobara nodded, her expression turning serious. "Yeah. It's… weird. But good weird."

They stopped at a crosswalk, waiting for the light to change. Yuji looked at Nobara, his gaze lingering a little too long. "I'm glad you're okay, Nobara. Really glad."

Nobara met his gaze, her eyes softening. "Me too, Yuji. Me too."

The light changed, and they crossed the street, their shoulders brushing. This time, neither of them pulled away.

As they continued their walk, the conversation drifted to lighter topics – silly stories from their training days, jokes about Panda's obsession with salmon, and their hopes for the future of the jujutsu world. But beneath the surface of their lighthearted banter, there was a deeper connection, a shared understanding forged in the fires of battle and loss.

Meanwhile, in the park, Maki and Yuta sat on a bench, the quiet hum of the city surrounding them.

"So," Maki began, breaking the silence, "what did you want to talk about?"

Yuta took a deep breath. "I… I wanted to thank you, Maki. For everything. For helping me, for believing in me, for…" He trailed off, unable to articulate his feelings.

Maki looked at him, her expression softening. "You don't have to thank me, Yuta. We're in this together."

Yuta nodded, his gaze meeting hers. "I know. And… I'm glad we are."

A comfortable silence settled between them, the unspoken feelings hanging in the air. Maki reached out and gently placed her hand over Yuta's. He looked at her, surprised, but didn't pull away.

"Maki," he began, his voice soft, "I…"

He was interrupted by a loud shriek. "KYAAAA! A GHOST!"

They both jumped up, startled, looking around for the source of the noise. It was a group of teenagers, pointing towards a shadowy figure in the distance.

Maki sighed. "Looks like our 'important discussion' will have to wait," she said, a hint of amusement in her voice.

Yuta chuckled. "Yeah, looks like it."

They exchanged a look, a silent promise passing between them. Their conversation might have been interrupted, but their connection was clear. Something was definitely blossoming between Maki and Yuta.
