Work Text:
Heidi Turner sits on Kyle Broflovski’s bed. Kyle’s bed. Her boyfriend’s bed. It’s still strange to her that he’s her boyfriend now. She assumed she would have gotten past this feeling a month into their relationship, but she really hadn’t. She’d get over it soon, she was sure. She just wonders when.
“Heidi.”
Heidi regains her footing in reality upon hearing her boyfriend’s voice. The sharp yellow light she’s suddenly noticing digging into her eyes pains her greatly, though she keeps quiet so she can hang out with Kyle.
“Hey, Kyle.”
“Hey, Heidi. You zoned out again.”
“Yeah, it just happens sometimes. I’m sorry, I’m not trying to, it just feels like my mind is four steps ahead of itself sometimes and I just have to follow it”.
“Hey, don’t apologize, you didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Y-yeah, you’re right.”
“You’re really weird sometimes, huh?”
Heidi sighs reluctantly, her strange behavior not likely to stop anytime soon, despite her wishes to the contrary. “Yeah.”
“It’s honestly really cute.”
“Really?” Heidi smiles sincerely at the earnest compliment.
“Yeah, it is. Really.” Kyle then leans in and kisses Heidi on the lips, letting the contact linger for what feels like many minutes. He does, however, have to end it at some point, so he pulls away. His pride in having such an incredible girlfriend quickly switches to mild worry upon noticing something wrong.
“Honey, why do you always look sad after we kiss?”
“I don’t know, I guess I’m always expecting it to be better than it is.”
“Maybe you just don’t like kissing. I know that some parts of physical contact make you uncomfortable, maybe this is the same.”
“No, that’s not it, because I’m always thinking about kissing people. It’s something I actively fantasize about, but for some reason I just don’t like it when we kiss.”
“Hmmm… you said you think about kissing people. It sounds like that includes people other than me.”
“…”
“Heidi, do you not like me? This is important, please answer.”
“Of course I do. Why wouldn’t I, we’re boyfriend and girlfriend, we’re in love, of course I like you!”
“Well, who do you think about kissing?”
Heidi averts her face completely to the other direction, not bearing to look at Kyle at this point in the conversation.
“Well? Please, I just need an answer.”
Heidi closes her eyes, scared half to death of how Kyle will look at her. “Wendy, and Bebe, and Lola, and Nichole… and sometimes Sophie.”
When Heidi opens her eyes, she doesn’t see Kyle fuming with rage as she expected. Instead, she sees a face of pure sadness awaiting her.
“Heidi, you’re gay.”
“W-what?”
“Heidi, you’re a lesbian.”
“N-no, I’m not. If I was a lesbian, then why am I dating you?”
“Be honest with me, do you think of me in a romantic way? Like, whenever you think of us being together forever, how do you feel?”
“Fine.”
“Just fine?”
“What do you mean, JUST fine?”
“No warm feeling, no overwhelming happiness?”
“…No.”
“Heidi, you’re gay.”
Heidi can’t even bring herself to speak, her mind finally putting all of these pieces that she hadn’t even assumed were related or remotely important together for the first time. She realizes something: she really is gay.
“I’m so sorry, Kyle.”
“For what?”
“For doing this to you. For playing with your emotions like this. It’s such a bad thing to do.”
“Heidi, it’s okay. I can tell it was an accident.”
“Really? Your girlfriend just realized she’s gay a MONTH into your relationship, and you’re just cool with it!?”
“Look, this isn’t ideal, but think about it. We can finally get the relationships we deserve. I’m happy you realized relatively soon.”
Heidi looks at Kyle and realizes that he’s right. The phrase IS ‘better late than never’ for a reason, right?
“Kyle, I still really want to be friends. A-and not in a friend-zone type way, don’t worry. You’re just so understanding of me, and I still care so deeply for you. Even if it’s not quite in a romantic way.”
“I feel the same way, Heidi.”
“Thank you for not being upset.”
“Why would I be upset?”
Heidi can’t come up with an answer to that question, so she just hums vibrantly.
“Who do you have a crush on, anyway? Like, the main girl, I mean.”
“P-probably Wendy.”
“She seems a bit intense. You sure you can handle her?”
Heidi chuckles a bit, amused at this response. “I think I can handle her perfectly fine, don’t worry.”
The two friends have fun the whole night, their changing relationship dynamic of no concern to either of them. All that they care about is how much they care for each other.
