Locations with names in italics are POIs or towns too small to have a gym leader.
Boatem Town
Based on:
Boatem Town (Season 8)
Gym:
Xisuma (Normal), Evil X (Dark)
Notable Residents:
Scar, Grian, Mumbo, Impulse (moved away, older), Pearl
A small, sunny town in the south of the region. Boatem is a must-visit for trainers seeking to challenge the league, but it’s a little out-of-the-way… Despite that, it has frequent passers-by seeking to make their way through town to visit Kanto, or from Kanto visiting the region. The best-known feature of the town is the Boatem Hole, a yawning, ancient sinkhole in the middle of town that features prominently in local legend as the birthplace of a god.
Mountainrow
Based on: Magic Mountain Row (Season 10)
Notable Residents: VintageBeef, Mumbo’s characters
A cheerful mountainside city. It’s a little bigger than Boatem, with lots of cute shops and a full-size pokemon center. Most people from Boatem and Hermit Hills make it their port-of-call when they need to do a shopping trip or get serious medical attention. It also features the power plant for the eastern half of the region, a conventional coal-burning plant that receives its fuel from the Orre mountains to the North. Goats are farmed in the mountains, and to the east are fertile pasturelands that provide beef and dairy to the rest of the region.
Hermit Hills
Based on : Hermit Hills (Season 3), Ore Mountain (Season 10)
Gym: False (Flying)
Notable Residents: TFC, Jevin
A mining town, recently revitalized by the opening of a new gym. It provides the only easy routes into the Orre Mountains, and provides fuel and mineral resources to the rest of the region. The people there tend to enjoy the quiet, small-town atmosphere, and aren’t as used to travellers as folks in Boatem and Mountainrow.
Dredge Lake
Based on: Gem’s Dredge build (Season 10)
Notable Residents: Gem
A small settlement on the edge of Dredge Lake. The lake itself is not only enormous, but leads incredibly deep under the earth’s surface in a network of subterranean caverns and ravines. The settlement is designed to facilitate exploration and act as a base-of-operations for trainers looking to explore the depths and the powerful monsters lurking therein. Has a neat anglerfish legendary, probably.
Tower Bay
Based On: Tower Bay (Season 6)
Notable Residents: Wels
One of the oldest human-made locations on the island. In ancient times, it was a fortified stone castle town, sitting high on a bluff above a prosperous port town. During a series of conflicts, it was ravaged by powerful water-type attackers, but the final blow was dealt by an army invading overland, whose powerful earth-type pokemon leveled the eastern walls of the city and part of the castle. Now it is a small but prosperous tourist town built in the shell of the ancient structure, bringing many trainers who want to encounter the otherwise-rare ghost types who call the ruined castle and its surrounding lands home.
Scarland
Based on: Scarland (Season 9), Scar’s Zoo (Season 10), Ore Mountain (Season 10)
Notable Residents: (I ran out of Hermits. Scar, eventually)
A magical ‘kingdom’ loosely based off of a restoration of the old Tower Bay castle, Scarland looms over its inspiration. It features a variety of magical lands for non-trainers, trainers, and pokemon alike - from theme parks and restaurants to more adult entertainment like casinos and theaters! To the north is the region’s Safari Zone - half-zoo, half-wildlife preserve. In the distance looms a third castle, The Citadel, with the Scarland Castle completing what some trainers call ‘castle row’ - a fun last chance for their pokemon to unwind before taking on the ultimate battle challenge.
The Citadel
Based on: Decked Out 2 (Season 9)
Notable Residents: Tango (Dark), C418 (Steel), Agnes (Psychic), Dinnerbone (Dragon), Jeb (Champion)
A towering black castle standing stark against the sky, The Citadel is home to the Elite 4 and champion of the region. To reach it, you must be either prepared to battle biting snow squalls and twisting winds on a flying-type pokemon, or make your way up winding, narrow paths on the sides of sheer, unforgiving cliffs. Once you reach the fortress, you can rest and warm yourself before preparing for the even more vicious challenge ahead - a gauntlet run of five of the most powerful trainers in the region.
The Perimeter
Based on: The Perimeter (Season 9), Area 77 (Season 6)
Gym: Doc (Grass)
Notable Residents: Doc, Ren, Skizz (in the Area)
An ancient quarry, now long-disused until Doc decided to drain it and build a massive lab in the center. It sits right below The Area, providing a secure facility for Doc to research the powerful pokemon that live within the dense jungles above. It also has a Ranger Base operated by Skizz to provide assistance to the people and pokemon who live in or travel through The Area. Doc has come to blows - literally - with Dinnerbone and the League over preserving the independence of The Perimeter, and making him a Gym Leader was largely a way to preserve face and assert symbolic control over his work while leaving him free to do as he pleases in near-total secrecy.
Aqua Town
Based on: Aqua Town (Season 7), Saffron City
Gym Leader: Ethos (Ice)
Notable Residents: Joel, Bdubs, Lizzie
The major metropolis of the region, with a large port that is a hub for trade with the outside world. In addition to a stadium-style gym and a large shopping mall, it has a Contest Hall run by Judge Bdubs Himself! It’s a center for arts, culture, commerce, and community, and a hub for everything going on in the region! Lizzie is a pop idol, and Joel is her avant-garde and slightly-useless artist husband.
Victreebel Labs
Based on: Bell Labs (Real Life)
Gym Leader: Cleo (Ghost)
Notable Residents:
xB
A large lab built on an island. Although it has a small gym, most of the facility is devoted to science, from the Quilfish Lab run by xB to Cleo’s research on Corsola bleaching. It shares the island with a large and only slightly experimental nuclear power plant which provides energy to the western half of the region. It also features a natural history museum, now on permanent temporary hiatus, set up by a former researcher, Cub.
Hermit Holmdel
Based on: Hermit Holmdel (Season 10)
Gym Leader: Joe Hills (Ground)
Notable Residents: Keralis
An enormous art installation that glitters off the coast of Aqua Town. It’s an enormous meadow, carefully levelled from the once-volcanic ground by its Gym Leader and founder, and made available to architects, artists, and artificers for enormous installations. It features an art museum run by Keralis on the northern end of the island, just above the tropical resort that takes up most of the islands’ eastern shore. A world-renowned getaway for lovers of art and culture, Hermit Holmdel is probably the first name on foreigner’s lips when they think of the region (a la the Eiffel Tower or Machu Picchu).
Pixelpulse Valley
Based on: Pixelpulse Valley (Season 10)
Gym Leader: Impulse (Electric)
Notable Residents: Hels
The thumping, lights-pulsing cyberpunk future is now! At least, it is in Pixelpulse Valley, a cavernous city built between two towering mountains on the southernmost shore of the region. The lights of the city never go dark, attracting a bevy of flying- and normal-type pokemon (and their trainers!) to the city - although those who delve deep enough will find the darkness lurking beneath the glamorous surface. Across the region, the radio never goes quiet thanks to the Radio Tower that rises above all the buzz, keeping the airwaves alive no matter what’s happening on the ground below.
The Rift Exigency
Based on: The Rift (Season 9)
Notable Residents: Zedaph, Cubfan
A lab once run by the champion, Notch, himself, it has fallen into disrepair since he was overthrown by Jeb and driven from the region. It exists to track the nebulous Rift Signals emanating from the seafloor in the surrounding waters - a hard-to-locate signal that seems to shift constantly. Zedaph, a researcher appointed by Jeb himself, now monitors the situation, not sure what the signal means , exactly - and so does Cubfan, a missing researcher from Victreebel Labs, now changed by the mysterious radiation.
