⬇ AITA for 'making a fuss' when my sister said I had to bring a girl as my plus one to her wedding?
Sorry for the long title, but I really need to get this off my chest.
Okay, context here: I (24M) am gay. Like, 100% homosexual, and my entire family knows. I think I came out at 15-16? Doesn't matter. My sister (24F) is... for lack of a better phrase, Super Straight. Let's get into the details.
So my sister is getting married soon and just sent out all the invites. At our bi-weekly family dinner at my parents house, she hand delivered everyone's little card written in fancy calligraphy with the official date in two months and everything. My parents (50M, 49F) got a conjoined one and my brother (27M) and I got one each. Sounds normal, right?
Except that there's a little 'plus one' section for my brother and I to fill in. My sister was grinning like the damn Cheshire cat when my brother pointed it out. She starts talking about how she and her fiancé (24M) were hoping that we could find a girl to bring along.
Cue my brother and I just looking at each other in disbelief.
"(Sister), I'm not gonna bring a girl," I said because DUH. I'M GAY.
"Yeah, me neither," my brother said. He's pansexual, by the way, so he could if he wanted to. He's just a whore that doesn't want to get tied down (his words).
She started pouting and saying that it was the one thing she wanted from us for her wedding. No gift or money or anything, just female dates. I tried to shut it down again, but my parents made all of us sit down for dinner and stop talking about it.
It was so unbelievably awkward. Everyone was ignoring the massive elephant in the room and passing the grilled skewers around in silence. My sister was staring at my brother and I the entire time as my parents stared at her to make sure she kept her big mouth shut.
It was, honestly, only a matter of time.
After dinner finally finished and I was about to say my goodbyes (sue me, I wanted to leave and go home to play League of Legends, maybe forget this ever happened until our next dinner in two weeks), my sister corners me and asks me why I couldn't just 'grant her one wedding wish' and suck it up. I told her straight up that I didn't even know anyone to bring, let alone a girl.
"You're really going to ruin my wedding over this?" she then said and I've got to hand it to her, my sister has both audacity and balls of steel. Both of which I so wanted to slap out of her.
"(Sister), stop being so fucking dramatic. He's not gonna ruin your little wedding by not bringing a girl along like you want him to—you literally know he's gay. Maybe you should just suck it up instead," my brother said. He also inherited the audacity and balls of steel.
My parents finally jumped in now that it looked like my sister was going to rip my brother's head off. It's far from the first or last time they've gotten into a fist fight.
"Okay, everyone calm down. This should not be a big deal," my dad said. Which, yeah, it shouldn't be a big deal. But with my sister, everything becomes a big deal.
She started ranting about how her and fiancé had the whole guest list planned and that they reserved an entire row of seating for both families on either side of the aisle and blah blah blah, boring wedding stuff. Basically me not bringing a girl was ruining everything and costing them so much extra money that they couldn't get back. By the end of her speech, my parents were fed up and didn't want to deal with her bullshit. Nobody ever wanted to deal with her bullshit—except her fiancé, apparently. The absolute angel of a man.
"(Me), you don't have any female friends that could just tag along?" my mom asked me.
I just repeated what I said earlier about not having anyone that would be interested in attending a wedding. Because, first of all, I only have three(?) friends, and second of all, what 24 year old has enough extra money laying around to buy an entire outfit meeting the extremely specific guidelines my sister came up with?
"Why don't you just ask? If nobody wants to spend a week by the beach with you, then (sister) will drop it. But you have to promise to ask," my dad suggested. I hate when he's reasonable. At least when it's used against me.
I promised anyway. If only to get the attention away from me.
"(Brother), you have to promise, too," my mom added. The shocked Pikachu look on his face actually made me laugh out loud.
"Just ask one of your little conquests," my sister said with the nastiest look ever. "I'm sure they'd just love to be romanced by the beach. Oh wait, you don't do romance, do you? How did I end up with lonely losers for brothers?"
That had my brother actually lunging towards my sister and I had to catch him by the hood of his sweatshirt before he tackled her to the living room floor. My parents basically kicked us all out after that—not that I blame them.
But that didn't stop my sister from having the final word when we were all walking to our cars.
"I just don't get why you always have to make a huge fuss about the things I want. You're so selfish."
That was about an hour ago and I'm still just too worked up to think about anything else. So, yeah, what do you guys think? Was I being dramatic or not? I tried to keep this as neutral as possible, but like I said, I'm really fucking worked up. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Maybe I'll even add updates if anything else happens (which, knowing my sister, probably will).
