Chapter Text
Two losers. Stranded in Faraway. That's what it felt like, anyways.
Kel and Aubrey. The forgotten of the bunch.
After Sunny moved away, Hero went off to college. Basil, was god knows where, doing god knows what. He didn't even show up to school anymore.
Kel and Aubrey felt stuck, the weird waiting room of life. They talked, sometimes. Small smiles in the hallways, the exchange of notes in class, not to each other, just two randoms caught in the crossfire of a high-school romance.
Aubrey didn't have any romance in her life, it was quite lackluster, in all honesty. Kel, on the other hand, seemed like the talk of the town. It seemed like any and every girl was constantly drooling over him, except for Aubrey. She couldn't give two damns about the guy.
It kinda got on his nerves, though he wouldn't tell you that himself.
Every single time he tried to interact with her, he was met by her monotone and uncaring self, which was an improvement, to be fair. At Least she wasn't at his throat now.
He didn't want that. He never wanted that. Actually, all he wanted was his best friend back. And he'd schemed up a plan, a stupid plan, but a plan nonetheless!
His plan wasn't exactly well thought out, but in all fairness, most of Kels ideas weren't.
But he felt like, if he didn't do something now, he never would.
On the day he decided to put his plan together, his stomach grew uneasy. He actually second guessed himself, something Kel rarely does.
But y'know, too late now!
That's what Kel thought,as he stood outside Aubrey's house,in the middle of the night.
Now, his plan was not to stalk her, though it may seem that way.
He kneeled down, taking a scoop of gravel up from the curb. Was this a stupid idea?
Maybe he shouldn't.
But it was too late. He'd already launched a rock up at her bedroom window. Shit.
He's too far in now. And what would any sane person do?
Throw another rock at her window, you say?
Well that's what Kel did. Over and over. Until eventually a light flicked on in there. He saw a shadow looming in the window, before it slid up, revealing the figure for all that she was.
She peered down at him, her eyes squinted.
‘ ‘ ..What the fuck. ‘ ‘
‘ ‘ Heyyy! Aubrey! ‘ ‘ He grinned up at her, his right hand sliding its way behind his neck as he waved with his left.
‘ ‘ What are you doing here?! Do you know what time it is?! ‘ ‘ Her voice was strained and harsh.
‘ ‘ Nope! Don't have a clue what time it is! Mind if I come up? ‘ ‘ He started walking towards the house.
‘ ‘ Kel- why the fuck would I- ‘ ‘ She was cut off, mostly by shock, because before she could answer, he was already scaling up the ladder, the one she used to sneak back into her room without her mom noticing.
‘ ‘ Yo! ‘ ‘ His head popped up to meet hers at the windowsill.
Aubrey let out a slight gasp, confused by the whole situation, yet, for some reason, she moved back, leaving the boy room to come in.
And that's exactly what he did.
He stumbled through the window clumsily, before jumping up, straightening his back, looking down at her with a great grin spreading across his face.
Aubrey looked up at him in silence, bewildered, unsure what to say.
‘ ‘ Aubrey. ‘ ‘ He nodded, smiling to her.
‘ ‘ Kel- what the fuck are you doing here at- ‘ ‘ she glanced back at her alarm clock. ‘ ‘ One in the morning?! ‘ ‘
‘ ‘ Well, Aubrey! ..I don't know. I didn't plan to get this far. ‘ ‘ He rubbed his neck awkwardly, letting out a slight chuckle.
Her expression grew annoyed, which only made Kel more uneasy.
‘ ‘ Look- don't- kick me out, Aubrey, I just.. I wanna talk. Reconnect, yknow? ‘ ‘
‘ ‘ It's been five years Kel- …why now?! ‘ ‘
‘ ‘ Because- ‘ ‘ She cut him off before he could finish.
‘ ‘ Because what?! So you can feel better about yourself?! ‘ ‘
‘ ‘ No! No not at all Aubrey! ‘ ‘
‘ ‘ Then why else?! You didn't care then, so why start now?! ‘ ‘ She moved closer to him, her cheeks flushing red with anger.
‘ ‘ Because I miss you, Aubrey! I tried to stay in touch, After Sunny! I tried, didn't I?! ‘ ‘ He raised his voice slightly, looking down on her with a saddened glare.
Aubrey looked back up at him. She couldn't think of what to say. He did try.
She was defeated. And in defeat there is only one thing for her to say now.
‘ ‘ ..Okay Kel. Let's talk. ‘ ‘
