Mitsuya blinked awake, momentarily disoriented of what had pulled him off his slumber.
The room all dark and quiet except for that little hum of the night—the kind of silence that isn’t really silent if you listen close.
His head felt fuzzy, maybe from a sweet dream slipping away, and his Omega instincts twitched, uneasy without the familiar scent that usually surrounded him, should be surrounding him right now.
After weeks of being in the embrace of the rich lavender and artemisia that kept him in check, Mitsuya felt like he was just missing something.
And that something was apparently someone.
He rolled over, arm stretching out to where Draken’s big, warm presence should have been, but nothing.
Just cold sheets.
His heart jolted, a quick stab of worry, and he sat up so fast, rubbing his eyes like they had deceived him somehow.
After they had their twins, Draken seemed like to be tethered to Mitsuya 25/8, like he was in the risk of separation anxiety if they were apart, no matter how short it was in the sense of distance and duration.
They used to call themselves, the Twin Dragons, might as well, added the joined at the hips to highlight their title.
“Ken?” Mitsuya called, voice scratchy from sleep, a faint whine sneaking in.
No answer.
The clock glowed 2:58am, red numbers staring back like they were in on some secret.
Mitsuya squinted, listening hard.
The house felt off.
Too still without Draken’s soft snore and too vacant without the scent they usually shared. The remnants on their sheet were nothing compared to the real source of it.
Mitsuya swung his legs out of the bed, bare feet hitting the cool floor, and padded out, tugging his oversized sleep shirt down where it’d bunched up.
The air carried a trace of lavender and spearmint, laced with citrus and artemisia, pulling him like a thread.
He trusted his nose to guide him.
The hallway was dim, but a sliver of light slipped from under the twins’ door, mingling with a softer version of that scent—their babies’ own little twist on it, fresh and milky.
Mitsuya frowned, creeping closer carefully because he swore he heard something.
It was low and soothing, like a growl softened into a purr. He pushed the door open slow, hinges creaking just a bit, and his breath hitched.
His Omega side melted, worry dissolving into a warm glow in his chest.
Draken was there, his tall frame hunched over the crib, one hand on the edge while the other held little Ryuka’s fist. Her tiny fingers gripped his thumb, and next to her, Tatsuya was sprawled out, chubby arms flung wide like he owned the place.
The scene was not strange to Mitsuya, but there was something that he hadn't witnessed before.
Draken was singing.
Not loud, just this deep, rumbling lullaby, words blurring together like he was half-dozing.
"Little child, be not afraid
"Though storm clouds mask your beloved moon
"And its candlelight beams, still keep pleasant dreams
I am here tonight.."
Mitsuya didn't recognize the song, but the way Draken sang it like he knew it by heart, making Mitsuya wondered if this was something that Draken used to hear when he was a child, despite not having a real parents.
Unaware of the audience, Draken drowned himself in the melody and Mitsuya couldn't take his eyes off his Alpha.
How come he had never heard Draken sing before?
Mitsuya leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, just breathing it in. Draken’s hair was messy, strands loose from sleep—or maybe the babies' earlier chaos—and their mating scent rolled off him strong, a perfect blend that marked them as one since their commitment to the permanent bond.
Draken might not be perfect, he wasn't a professional singer after all. But his soothing voice had Ryuka and Tatsuya out cold, their little chests rising and falling together.
His Alpha hadn’t noticed him yet, too lost in his song, and Mitsuya felt that warm, needy tug deep inside, his Omega purring at the sight and the scent wrapping around them.
“Couldn’t sleep?” Mitsuya said finally, keeping his voice low so it wouldn’t broke the magical moment.
Draken froze, head snapping up, but those sharp Alpha eyes softened when they met his, the citrus in their scent flaring briefly.
“Didn’t mean to wake you,” Draken muttered, shifting like he’d been caught, the spearmint in his scent sharpening with a hint of embarrassment. “Ryu-chan was fussing, then Tacchi joined in, and you don't deserve to wake up after having to struggle to put them to sleep so, I figured I could handle it.”
Mitsuya smiled, stepping closer until he could peek over Draken’s shoulder at the twins.
He always knew Draken was the perfect Alpha, but after years of being treated so right by his mate, this little action still made his Omega instincts hum in happiness.
“You didn’t wake me," he said. "I just noticed you were gone. The bed doesn't feel the same without you.”
Draken huffed a laugh, quiet so it wouldn’t stir their babies.
“Yeah, well, these two ain’t giving me much choice." He nodded at Ryuka, still clinging to his thumb like it was her lifeline. "Had to improvise.”
Mitsuya rested his head on Draken's shoulder. Draken automatically wrapped his arm around him. The warmth of his body, seeped into Mitsuya, their shared scent blooming stronger where they touched—grounding them.
“Didn’t know you could sing like that,” he teased, but it came out way softer than he intended, all tangled in the deep fondness he couldn’t shake.
Draken’s ears went red, ducking his head, a low rumble in his chest.
“That's not singing. Just random humming, to settle them down, that's all. Works great, it keeps them quiet.”
“Sure it does.” Mitsuya grinned, leaning in to press a quick kiss to column Draken’s neck, inhaling the perfect mix of lavender, spearmint, a dash of citrus with artemisia, the scent that screamed theirs. “You’re so good at it, you know? Really, really good, Ken.”
Draken grumbled something, but he didn’t pull away, just let Mitsuya stay close while the twins slept on.
The lullaby faded, but its echo lingered, blending with their scent in the air amplified the warm atmosphere.
This was their home.
Mitsuya's hand slid up to entangle itself with Draken’s, and for a minute, they just stood there, watching their little twins.
“Come to bed,” Mitsuya whispered after a while, tugging at Draken’s arm. “They’re out like light. You need sleep too.”
Draken nodded, slow and somehow bit reluctant, but he let Mitsuya pull him back toward the door.
One last glance at the crib, and Mitsuya caught the tiny smile tugging at Draken’s lips—like he couldn’t help it.
And Mitsuya didn't need to be a mind reader to able to tell what was going on Draken's mind.
Because standing on the door way, with their shared scent wrapping around them and their babies, who were sleeping safe and sound, it was hard not to feel like everything was just right.
