Chapter Text

Raven Queen

Bisexual (she/her)

Daughter of the Evil Queen (Punjabi)

The Evil Queen was at one point the terror of the whole world, a matchless sorceress and conquerer, her daughter Raven on the other hand…isn't. Growing up in isolated poverty in her mothers scorched, crumbling fortress across the sea, Raven despite her gothic sensibilities is a kind, artsy optimist who believes in the inherent good of everybody, and is wholly new to (and feverently dislikes) Ever Afters way of doing things. Small wonder she's ended up the unassuming leader of a rebellion against the destiny system after eschewing her mother's destiny at thronecoming…

Likes: playing bass, gothic and punky fashion and music, writing, kaiju movies and having friends like the Rebels.

Dislikes: headmaster grimm, her destiny ,unnecessary conflict, silly or unjust rules and mirrors.

Spellbinding Style: gothy and alternative with plenty of handmade,hand-repaired and personalised patches and flourishes added by Raven for the people and things she loves best. Raven is a dab hand with a needle and thread after a whole childhood of nessecary practice mending and modifying her and her mother’s clothes.

Companion creature: Nevermore the crow, a friendly corvid that befriended raven in her early teens through gifts of crumbs, and who followed her boat across the ocean to ever after high.

Hexworthy vex: that people would stop assuming she's evil. Anything and everything raven enjoys has been used against her as “proof” that she's as wicked as her mother and having to explain that every aspect of your personality is really just something you do or enjoy really gets on raven's nerves sometimes.

“Oh Curses” moment: inability to control her powers. It's hard to seem non-threatening to your peers when every other week you cause an involuntary explosion. It also doesn't help that the faculty at ever after high have essentially left her to figure it out herself (or don't know what to do with her, as raven suspects)

Storied Secret: To have known her mother better. Despite her understandably negative reputation, Raven is sure there was a better side, even if it was never on show, to her mother than everyone says, after all nobody's truly evil deep down, right?

Deepest wish: to create and live her own future,to sing and write and be nice and good to people, destiny be damned!

5 Fantastical Facts:

  • Raven plays bass and sings as the lead of the band “Raven and the Rebels” with her friends Maddie,Cerise,Hunter and Cedar, though playing for years at this point (the instrument a treasured 10th birthday gift) Raven has never had the friends to form a band, so it's a new and exciting experience.
  • Raven is an avid reader of scifi and horror books and in turn an avid writer of her own original work, one of her favourite things to do in her alone time is to sit and type up her latest tale in the back of the Hatters Tea Shoppe, posting them under a pseudonym on Ao3…
  • Raven has an odd resentment with mirrors, she's never liked looking in them (she and her mother have a very similar face, Raven having a more forlorn resting face to her mothers scowl) but beyond that raven knew her mother spent more time talking with her magic mirror than her and her dad, and while she knows it's silly,Raven still wants to know what they could hold that enticed her mother so much…
  • Raven has enjoyed watching giant monster movies since she was a kid, her and her dad watching one from his well-loved collection together on Friday nights, a tradition raven has continued with her friends at ever after high. One of the things she loves about them is that the monsters themselves aren't characterised one way or another, some being scary, silly, heroic and villainous in kind, she finds them relatable, in a sense…
  • Raven finds the “high society” she is supposedly a part of really very confusing. There's a million and one rules that don't make sense to her and and her very grounded, compassionate sensibilities clash with what is expected of her as a princess, causing no manner of scandal and gossip from the upper-class,well…more scandal and gossip from the upper class. (Her dad has a lot of stories like that from his own youth that always made raven laugh as a kid, raven's comforted by the fact it seemingly runs in the family…)

Notes:

Raven Queen is one of those characters that I've been rattling around my brain for ages now, mostly because I find her whole deal really compelling from the multiple perspectives it can be read from.

My idea for raven's backstory is that she's basically been living in her mothers shadow her whole life and hasn't really had a chance to be or do anything else because of those consequences. In my rewrite, the evil queen essentially tried to conquer the world whilst messing with as many destinies as possible to really get to her adversaries (ie,basically everyone but particularly grimm, snow white and king charming, who fought against her with military means), the result of the "Queen war" was basically the Evil queen being seemingly destroyed along with her kingdom, which whilst never the nicest place was reduced to a scorched, lifeless wreck by the powers that be, Raven having to grow up here as not only did the royals not exactly know what to do with her (a running theme as we'll see...) but we're also kinda terrified of this wholly innocent 6-7 year old due to what her mother achieved with similar powers. (Another tidbit I think could be interesting is Raven being magically modified by her mother to look more like her, the aforementioned similar looking faces being intentional on her mothers end and spooking the royals further...)

The kicker is that Raven never really knew her mother that well in the first place anyways, the Evil queen being so busy with her aforementioned plans for world domination and the like raven kinda got pushed to one side, to be raised almost exclusively by her dad, himself neglected by his spouse and terrified to say anything on either count for fear of being turned into a carrot should he do so,or worse... So if it wasn't obvious, raven's had it rough basically her whole life, but she presses on despite all her classmates and sometimes teachers assume or expect of her. Idk I just like having a character who despite going through a lot of terrible stuff and wearing dark and gothic clothing is actually pretty optimistic regarding people, it makes her a good contrast towards some of the more jaded or nihilistic characters wearing bright or saturated colours. (I see you Briar and Duchess...)

Finally, speaking of dark and gothic clothing, linked in the "spellbinding style" section is a selection of pictures and outfits I imagine raven's patchwork, tradgoth style draws inspiration from, as well as some desi goths since my version of Raven is south asian and I think that they're criminally underrepresented in the alt scene.

Chapter 2: Ever After High Reimagined: Apple White.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Apple White

Lesbian (she/her)

Daughter of Snow White (Polish-American)

Apple White above all else desires to be the perfect snow white, a role model to lead the way for others to follow their destiny after the chaos of the queen war, its…irksome then that her roommate flies in the face of everything she,her mother and grimm stand for more. No matter though, this year apple is sure through rote appraisal and encouragement of her more wicked attributes raven's sure to come around to her inherent villany and play her wicked part in the greatest story of them all to apples perfect princess and darings perfect prince, it'll only be a matter of time…

Likes: her destiny, making her mother happy,Sabrina Spellbinder's music, getting fairest with her friends and fruit desserts.

Dislikes: water, the rebels rule breaking, her mother's more…pointed comments (though she knows its all for the best) ,perfect pretty Darling Charming and being a natural blonde (she'd prefer black to match with her mother,of course)

Spellbinding Style: A rigid emulation of her mothers style, mixing traditional princess fare with vintage styles handpicked and customised from the fashion catalogues. (or to quote raven, 1550s meets 1950s…)

Companion creature: Gala the cavalier spaniel, who would be a picture perfect pet for an equally picture perfect princess, if only she didn't have that distinct spaniel exuberance that apple finds overwhelming as well as a preference instead for Raven. Apples convinced raven's casting some spell to make her dog like her better…

Hexworthy vex: for everybody to do as they're told for once! With rebellions left and right it feels lately like the whole world's been turned upside down, hopefully though this will all blow over in time, everybody will remember their place in the world, and things will go back to how they used to and should be…

“Oh Curses” moment: Apple has a nasty tendency to people please, especially around the adults in her life, particularly her mother and headmaster grimm, and now she and her friends are nearing adulthood it's becoming harder and harder to ignore as her Royal friends become more and more independent.

Storied Secret: Of the ones she's willing to acknowledge, Apple's favourite food in the world is sugary sweet fruit pastries and tarts, unfortunately for apple her mother is insistent on her following a diet with little sugar, fruit included. (yeah, she's one of those mothers…)

Deepest wish: To be the ideal snow white, to live out her destiny and marry her fairytale prince and raising the ideal family, including a daughter as the next snow white as queen, and in doing so making her mother and grimm proud.

Five Fantastical Facts:

  • Apple is gay,she has yet to realise this.
  • Apple is also autistic, and despite how much it plays into her life, she has also not realised this. She gets it from her dad, not that the pair really spend that much time around each other for anyone to notice, or that her mother would want to acknowledge it if they did.
  • Apple has albinism which severely affects her sense of sight, requiring her to wear thick glasses. Apple however, fearful that this perceived imperfection will hamper her image as a picture-perfect princess, insists she's OK with just contacts (blue coloured since apples always been self conscious about her eyes being red), anyone can tell she struggles, you can only walk into enough walls enough times that anybody will…
  • When she was young apple and another girl, the future rose red, got into an…altercation involving a well that apple doesn't want to or like talking about and has left her with a fear of water and drowning, apple shying away from pools, beaches, bathtubs and any sort of water higher than her knees, and even then she’s extremely nervous, preferring to take showers or stay in the shade with a book as opposed to going in the water with her friends on days at the beach. (Not that her albinism permits her to stay in the sun for long either,it doesn't take much for apple to get as red as her namesake on summer days...)
  • Apples place as the premier princess at Ever After High is threatened by only one girl, Darling Charming. It seems everything apple can do, Darling can do twice better, she's more gracious, more dainty, more beautiful… Considering her destiny as a typical princess charming Apple fears there's something going on beyond what she knows…

Notes:

Oh apple, misconstrued by tiktok and clearly suffering atrociously from comphet. Apple is an...interesting character to talk about.

Apples a girl of many different conflicting facets. She's spoiled rotten, selfish and a bit classist and out of touch, if unintentionally and simultaneously a neglected and manipulated child whose desire to make her mother proud remains forever unfulfilled. (namely because for her mother, apple is more pliable when she's wrought by insecurity) She loves her friends and family so,so much and yet bows to the threat of consequence or punishment way too easily...I can go on.

Apple first and foremost wants to be the perfect princess, the paragon of the destiny systems triumph and resilience in the face of the Queen war (itself a load of bunk, what she really wants is to live up to the physical and psychological parameters set by her mother,as unreachable as they might be) because then her parents will show attention to her and be happy with her as she is, an impossible task and expectation of anybody, let alone a 15 year old closeted lesbian. The lack of control over her personal life leads to apple trying to micromanage her social and school life in order to live up to these improbable standards, and as such she takes the Rebels chafing against the system she represents as catastrophically serious 100% of the time, much to the chagrin of people with more grounded, worldly concerns. (Raven and Hunter, both part of her story and both being rebels may have something to do with it though, as Selfish a reason as that is...)

Apples not a bad person by any means, but a terrified one who wants to be in control of her life and justify her worldview in any way she can. Needless to say, her adolescence isn't going to be pretty, for her or any of her friends royal or rebel roped into her crazy plans to prove it so...
So TLDR: Apple's a bit deranged and understandably so being burdened by so much from the adults in her life, but I love her regardless...

Also a quick aside about Apple's style, whilst I have said as much as I need to regarding her outfits, Apple being of Polish ancestry in our world plays a bit into it too, I like to imagine said outfits take some inspiration from traditional west slavic womenswear too, particularly having similar patterns and designs in her clothes to them...

Chapter 3: Ever After High Reimagined: Maddie Hatter

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Maddie Hatter

TeaGender Aromantic (tea/teaself)

Child of the mad hatter (Ghanaian-British)

Maddeline Xylophone Hatter (amongst myriad names) has a tendency to be underestimated, at a surface glance most assume Maddie to be well…mad, a teatime-and-crumpets obsessed oddball with a penchant for crazy hats and brainteasing riddles, not to mention a habit of noticing and talking to seemingly nothing as if a person was there…But if you get to know tea as tea's predominantly rebel and wonderlandian friends do it's an entirely different story, Maddie is fiercely loyal, caring, emotionally intelligent and despite loving tea's future as the next mad hatter is wholly supportive of tea's friends rebelling, much to the puzzlement of tea's royal classmates, then again in a mad world as ever after maybe…as the saying goes, only the mad are sane…

Likes: Tea, hats ,baking biscuits, riddles and playing a range of wacky instruments.

Dislikes: coffee, rude customers, tea's friends being upset, the insistence of others of the impossible, and being away from wonderland.

Spellbinding Style: Victorian inspired fashion based on aspects of both male and female outfits of the day, with some typically bright and crazy wonderland colours to boot! Of particular note of course are maddies cherished collection of hats, there being at least one available for every day of the week and then some, always comically oversized and adorned with this, that and everything else in between, not to mention everything found inside them…

Companion creature: Earl Grey the mouse. The walls of the mad tea shoppe are beset with mice, however instead of pests said mice happily help the Hatters run their tea shop, serving tables, washing dishes and the like. Earl is maddies personal assistant, and when not on the job takes naps in the many deep pockets of tea's coats.

Hexworthy vex: People making tea in a microwave. It takes a lot to make a Hatter genuinely and literally hopping mad but this is one of those things, blondie did it last year to see if the rumors were correct and needless to say she won't be doing it again anytime soon…

“Oh Curses” moment: Maddie has a tendency to slip into tea's native riddlish if tea talks for long enough, stupefying those tea's talking to and usually forcing tea to sheepishly repeat teaself in English. Being the good friends that they are, Raven and the other Rebels have taken it upon themselves to brush up on the language themselves as to not catch their friend out…

Storied Secret: less of a secret, but maddie is aware that there's…something out there, and it's watching and commenting on tea and tea's friends, mind you it is a pretty open secret,Maddie often talking with them in public in and outside of school, but usually people brush it off as typical hatter madness, regardless maddie has decided to keep an eye out about for them for now…

Deepest Wish: To be able to live in Wonderland again. For as adaptable as maddie can be to most circumstances, sometimes tea gets awfully homesick for the place, Ever After is an admittedly strange, nonsense place filled with strange, arbitrary rules and wonderland just…clicked y'know, Regardless Maddie puts on a brave face, the rebels have more pressing problems anyhow and tea's sure wonderland will eventually bounce back to its old self…right?

Five Fantastical Facts:

  • Like all Wonderlandians, Maddie doesn't entirely proscribe to eah's binary sense of gender in regards to visual and verbal presentation, and along with tea’s dad uses neopronouns pertaining to tea to describe teaself.
  • Maddies hat is its own pocket dimension, full of multitudes of things both completely random and surprisingly useful, the space insode being big enough to literally get lost in. Maddie teaself tumbled out of tea’s dad's hat one day as a baby, tea's dad raising her as tea's singular parent.
  • Maddie works part-time in her Father's mad tea shoppe after school and on weekends, serving up all sorts of tea and brewed concoctions. It's a favourite place for the Rebels to hang out together and catch up on homework after school along with much of the wonderlandian diaspora about the neighbourhood.
  • One of maddies favourite hobbies is baking biscuits to add to the tea shoppe's retinue out of all sorts of wild ingredients, tea's friends always willing to try out a few of teas newest creations, with Cerise preferring the umami flavoured ones,Hunter the ones with floral and earthy notes, and Raven the sweet,if tart treats.
  • Maddie plays the keyboard, among many, many other wacky and whimsical instruments if needed as a part of Raven and The Rebels. Said keyboard is adorned with all manner of noisemaking gizmos, thingamabobs and whatnots to add a mad kick to the Rebels latest songs…

Notes:

Maddie is a very fun character concept to me.
I've seen it mentioned that in the original book the Mad Hatter is the epitome of a useless adult, on the contrary,Maddie is a very capable adolescent. I like the idea that despite peoples assumptions of tea as a beverage-crazed loon, Maddie is really the rebels rock, always ready with a brew and a pack of biscuits if a friend or otherwise wants to chat about something with tea.

Another idea that adds to this is my take on the Evil Queen's curse on wonderland and how it affects the Wonderlandians in the cast. My versions of Maddie,Lizzie,Kitty and the rest are for all intents and purposes, war refugees, displaced by events beyond their control, forced to up sticks to a safe, but unfamiliar and in a lot of cases unwelcoming new place and make do with what little they've got. In this case it's Maddie and tea's father having to turn their favourite recreational thing, teatime into a marketable skill in the form of a teahouse and as a consequence working their butts off to get by, something Raven notices and feels guiltily responsible for on behalf of her mother on her first visit to the place. Maddies had to grow up a lot quicker than tea's Ever-Aftian peers as a result of the Wonderlandians displacement, though through it all stands Maddie's stalwart, optimistic belief that they'll all be able to go back to wonderland someday, no matter how impossible it seems.

This belief in the impossible and inconceivable is also partly why Maddie, despite the circumstances, doesn't blame Raven for them despite her insistence on being sorry for her mothers sake, as well as why tea is immediately ready to throw in with the rebellion effective immediately, tea's a lot like tea's father but tea also understands that tea isn't him, tea's Maddie, and Raven is just Raven and so on and so forth, and that maybe escaping the confines of destiny and being your own person isn't impossible in turn.

Anyways, the rebels work so well together because Raven and Maddie work well together. They are best friends and closest confidants, fill in for each other's shortcomings well, the Rebels as a whole are founded on both Raven's ambition and Maddie's wisdom and their shared heart, optimism and kindness, they're essentially the perfect pair...

Chapter 4: Ever After High Reimagined: Briar Beauty.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Briar Beauty

Bisexual (she/her)

Daughter of Sleeping Beauty (Guyanese)

Ever After Highs resident party princess and queen of the school’s social scene. Briar is destined to sleep for a century after pricking her finger on her 18th birthday, so she's determined to make the most of her remaining teenage years throwing absolutely pageripping parties and indulging in all manner of activities, much to the detriment of her actual schoolwork. Hedonistic, but caring and infectiously social Briar has a lot of doubts about her destiny she's not willing to let anyone know about and in turn doesn't want to think about, surrounding herself in distractions, call it wishful thinking at best and sacrilege at worst but a small part of Briar hopes her curse is broken by that fateful day…

Likes: extreme sports, partying, social media, gardening, and faybelle’s company.

Dislikes: thinking about the future, needles, threadwork (way too fiddly), Blondie (or at least she's the only Royal who admits it) and classroom environments.

Spellbinding Style: 2000s-inspired party girl/gyaru chic in a million different flavours of pink, that all inevitably gets shredded by the party circuit or briars daredevil antics, thank goodness she has a friend like ashlynn whose always ready to repair briars shredded garments in a pinch, though not without a little friendly grumbling about how Briar should take better care of her outfits.

Companion creature: Diva the unicorn. Briars not really into animals the way some of her friends are, but some if her favorite activities involve equestrianism, and having as her brother once recalled “balls to the wall crazy” of a steed as Diva certainly helps.

Hexworthy vex: Briar's high octane life means she spends…perhaps a bit too long awake at times, and being narcoleptic (a trait she shares with her polar opposite of a mother) Briar has a nasty habit of falling asleep on the spot in the most inconvenient of times, most typically in classes, where the rest of the pink squad have to perform double duty in regards to taking notes, to randomly during some of her favourite activities, causing all matter of chaos in her wake.

“Oh Curses” moment: Briar gets into a lot of scrapes and is usually not without a few bandaid or a cast from her misadventures. For which apple and ashlynn chide her for, the latter understandably out of worry for her friends physical health and apple for what they could bring to her image as a princess.

Storied Secret: Briar really does wish Apple would shut up about destinies sometimes, not everyone has such a straightforward time of it wherein they're poisoned, comatose for a week and come out the other side relatively unharmed with a loving prince to show for it you know! Though to be honest seeing as Briar has never really spoken up about it what does she know, all she can hope for is that her prince (or princess, maybe by then theyll have loosened up on that sort of thing) is relatively ok...

Deepest wish: To find some way out of,or at least postpone, her destiny. In truth Briar hates the concept of waking up in the future, her friends and family all long gone to the passage of time and wedded to a man she's never met, but who knows, now that she knows it's possible not yo follow your destiny without going poof there's a chance she could defy her ending too,Briar the rebel, imagine that!?!

Five Fantastical Facts:

  • On top of being and a part of the student council and apples royal friend group, briar is the leader of her own group with hopper, cupid and newcomer meeshell, half jokingly referred to as the Pink Squad due to their shared preference for the colour. Some of her friends aren't sure how she's able to keep on top of it all? (the answer is energy drinks, so, so many energy drinks…)
  • In addition at home Briar has 8 younger brothers, the eldest now 13 and the youngest 4. With her mother often out of action due to fatigue and father busy running the kingdom Briar with the help of her mothers fairy retainers practically had to raise the boys herself, which is where her aforementioned knack for planning (as well as many of her doubts and neurosis) stems from…
  • As opposed to her friends, who are respectively saving herself for her destined prince and seemingly too busy to sustain a relationship, Briar is known for having…liaisons at her parties with random princes for the night, Briar all things considered believes there's no real point in having a romantic partner now because of her destiny, as much as she does like the concept…
  • As well as this, out of the central three royals Briar is by far the most chronically online (all of apples posts and interactions being precisely vetted by her mother and ashlynn not using her phone for days on end) you can bet that whatever she's currently doing, Briar is making a post or video of it to share later for thousands of likes.
  • Briar enjoys gardening. There's a chaotic enjoyment in it Briar can't get enough of, plus she quite likes the idea that when her destiny comes to pass someone would keep it in good enough shape for her to return to it once her century of slumber comes to an end,it'd be something to remember Briar as Briar, and not just sleeping beauty…

Notes:

Lots of people like Briar, and I can wholly understand why. She's doomed by the narrative and everyone kinda knows it both inside and outside of the world of ever after.

In all honesty I think Briar might honestly be a bit of a nihilist, or at the very least a pessimist despite her general "seize the day" type attitude, her most pressing fear understandably is time, particularly how despite her efforts to "live in the moment" it nonetheless all melds together into one big unassailable lump of parties, boys and myriad activities. I think, beyond her fun loving partygirl thing, Briar is terrified...

Another thing of note is Briar's friendship with Apple, namely that compared to the pink squad, faybelle, or ashlynn, Briar isn't as close to her as Apple and Briars relationship is the most testy and one sided of the three central royals Apple seeing Briar as her closest friend and confidante whilst Briar considers Apple just one of her friends, they could be as close as apple wants and imagines but to briar, Apple is figurative minefield to talk to due to her focus on destinies, herself being far closer to Ashlynn (primarily because they can actually have a conversation without the topic of their destinies being brought up,an uncomfortable topic for both girls) or the pink squad, or even Faybelle. (If anything I see the two of them more as opposites that balance each other out well, but I'll get to faybelle when I get there...)

Basically, rather fittingly for a future sleeping beauty, Briar is tired of her fast paced life and the fact in order to do all the things she wants she has to live it, as well as the buzz that comes with the sense of control over things, and that indeed does make Briar an inherently tragic character.

Chapter 5: Ever After High Reimagined: Hunter Huntsman

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Hunter Huntsmann

Trans Boy (He/Him)

Son of the Huntsman (Maori-Scottish)

Hunter Huntsmann is a boy who simply wants to protect the woods he loves and the creatures who live in them, play guitar in a band with his friends and be with the girl he loves. Unfortunately the destiny system isn't kind, and Hunter specifically is expected of so many unreasonable things, expected to be both hero and villain in multiple tales, his father's ideal, preposterously masculine son, a butcher of beasts and a killer of princesses… The list goes on, and Hunter, sweet and soft hearted, cannot be doing with any of it, he's rebelling no questions asked, and determined to grow into and be his own ideal of a man along the way…

Likes: Being with ashlynn, playing the guitar ,woodworking, hiking and helping animals.

Dislikes: Pesky the Squirrel, capitalism, his dad's bullheadedness and chauvinism, traps and snares and people trashing the woods.

Spellbinding Style: Rugged outdoor wear found in your typical outdoors store, typically in green, brown and neutral tones with myriad flourishes from both his parents cultures including Highland dress and Korowai cloaks for more formal occasions,he's particularly drawn to kilts, and Ashlynn thinking he looks dashingly handsome in them does help that…Companion creature: Pesky the Squirrel. Hunter doesn't really enjoy the concept of owning a pet but Pesky, who has made it seemingly his life's mission to screw with hunter, is around him so much he might as well be one…

Hexworthy vex: Aside from Pesky, his father's posturing, chauvinist machismo and his mother's refusal to stand up to his attitude. He knows it's partly because of how they were raised (and why he has no desire to see his grandparents much) ,but their insistence on playing their parts infuriates him.

Oh Curses” moment: Hunter is a bit of a doormat especially surrounding his family, surprisingly for somebody branded a rebel, he and Ashlynn share a desire not to upset the proverbial apple cart. In a better world both would find the courage to speak out, but for myriad reasons neither feels like they can, and all things considered it's driving both of them to their wits ends!

Storied Secret: Hunter never quit doing many of the “girly” things his dad assumed he had upon coming out, chiefly staying on the cheerhexing team when he said he'd join the other boys playing sports. (although faybelle would never let him had he tried, he's too integral to many of faer routines…)

Deepest wish: to be a wildlife veterinarian, helping and healing animals instead of hunting and trapping them.

Five Fantastical Facts:

Hunter fancies himself a barber in addition to a vet, cutting his hair into a signature style to differentiate himself from his father, no one has the heart to tell him it looks dreadful…

On the other hand,Hunter is skilled and adaptable at bushcraft and is able to make just about anything with whatever random materials he finds in the forest and his trusty penknife.Hunter is a vegan, as well as a very skilled forager and cook, his much-lauded specialty being hāngī-cooked vegetables,a firm favourite among his friends despite many inevitable puns about “hole foods” being slung around during the cooking process.

Beyond his girlfriend and friends, Hunter is closest to his younger sister, Fern, but due to the insistence of his father he act “strong, stoic and the like” as a show of masculinity, , Hunter however knows this is all a bunch of bunk, had he not transitioned he figures he'd have an equal hand in raising Fern as his homemaker mother.

Hunter is The Rebels backup guitarist, owning both an acoustic and electric guitar. He's also one of two members of the band to know how to play multiple instruments and the only one who knows how to make them, whistles and flutes among the projects he's carved.

Notes:

Hunter being trans is an idea I like immensely, whilst gender roles have been played with in eah before (cough, cough Darling) the expectations that boys are intended to fulfil wasn't, Hunter is a vehicle to do so...

Hunter isn't a traditional "manly" guy, he's an athletic boy with much knowledge and skill for the outdoors for sure, but he's not or much of a leader,he's sensitive and patient and happy to lend his support to others regardless they be animal or person. But still isn't what everybody wants of him...

I like to imagine that hunters rebellion ties into his ideal to be the man he wants to be instead of what everybody else thinks he should be, and how he wishes who he is could be the man everybody is looking for, be it with his father wanting a traditionally "manly" son or his destiny wanting a dashing prince instead of a big hearted forestman.

One final thing to note is that Hunter ironically is very much akin to the Prince from Cinderella and even Cinderella herself, the Prince in that story isnt defined quite rarely for his heart, devoting weeks upon weeks of time to find the girl who he only knew for a few short hours, and uncaring of her social standing to boot, as well as being a person from a lower social standing forced into a situation he's not comfortable with, and his reprieve being found in an upper class person. (though in truth, both hunter and ashlynn are each other's rocks and reprieves from the troubles in their lives)

Chapter 6: Ever After High Reimagined: Ashlynn Ella

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Ashlynn Ella

Daughter of Cinderella (she/her)

Trans Girl

Industrious and driven, always repairing or cleaning things and with an intrinsic need to feel useful, Ashlynn is an unorthodox princess compared to her friends, happiest whiling away at projects on her sewing machine or helping her family's servants with chores. This toeing-the-line of destiny as the next Cinderella extends to her love life, being madly in love with Hunter Huntsmann as opposed to any kind of prince, a fact both must keep tight-lipped in order to not be found out and separated, between that and the future destiny-based implosion of her family into a “proper” Cinderella tale, what is she to do?

Likes: Being with hunter, repairing things, helping people out, shoes and sexy lumberjack memorabilia

Dislikes: letting people down, not being busy, leaving tasks or projects unfinished, fast fashion and princessology class.

Spellbinding Style: Practical yet pretty. Ashlynn prefers dungarees and pinafores, often personally embroidered with beautiful, intricate threadwork to more traditional princess fare. For what it's worth, ashlynns shoe collection consists of a wide variety of footwear for any occasion.

Companion creature: Sandella the Firebird. A family of Firebirds have nested on the roof of the Ella's castle for generations now, but as much as she loves animals ashlynn can't help but look at the birds, including the one considered “hers”, as a living symbol of the cyclical nature of her destiny, harbingers of fortune, rebirth, and doom…

Hexworthy vex: Cute shoes that aren't in her size. Like many transfemme girls ashlynn has big feet so the cute shoes that may handily fit Apple or Briar won't fit on her, and while being a princess she can readily afford custom shoes, Ashlynn instead prefers to make or modify her own, both for personal use and for others who might want them.

Oh Curses” moment: Overexerting herself. Ashlynn is a caring person and a physically hard worker, always trying to be on top of schoolwork and chores alike, the problem comes when folks take advantage of her helpful nature or ashlynn takes on too big a workload, working deep into the night on little sleep as to make a deadline and not let her client down to her own detriment.

Storied Secret: Ashlynn loves hunter with all her heart, but by grimm his haircut is awful. Of course she's never told him it sucks and never intends to, it'd break his heart…

Deepest wish: To simply be with Hunter, openly and unafraid to love the boy she loves in public, even to the point of eschewing her destined prince, and her destiny as a result…

Five Fantastical Facts:

Ashlynn lives with her mother, who has been suffering with an illness that leaves her bedbound most days, her mothers majordomo and her two daughters, the stepmother and stepsisters of her story. Whilst an unconventional cast for a Cinderella, considering that Ashlynns father died when she was a toddler there wasn't really any other option, the “big” stories like hers are pretty strict in regards to gender roles…

Ashlynns relationship with said sisters is…rockier than she would like. Whilst it's true that they are unfairly looked down on by most for not being “true” stepsisters on top of their villainous destiny, the girls tend to take out all their frustration through acting petulant towards ashlynn or feeding their shopping addiction for the latest outrageous fashions and accessories. Ashlynn understands their frustration but does wish sometimes they were a bit less avaricious, though her protests are usually taken as jealous busybodying in turn.

Ashlynn has legendarily poor time blindness despite her best (usually poor) efforts, often being late for events because she just has to get this last thing done before she goes Briar! Only for the hours to go by quick amongst a myriad of said “last things” and Ashlynn to decide its too late to be going to any balls or parties, much to her more party-inclined friend's usual understanding irritation.

Generations of magic buildup have developed into an…irritating curse for poor ashlynn, wherein if she's late to anything on the hour her outfit deteriorates into a scruffier, raggedy look, between interrupting lessons and destroying the patterns ashlynn sewed onto her outfits it really gets to her, leaving her with more work to do on said outfits in the aftermath…

Despite her best efforts and intent, Ashlynn is an absolutely awful cook,as in “can burn water” bad.

Notes:

I've made mention that both of the previous rebels, Apple and Briar deep down are terrified, unfortunately Ashlynn is no different, I'd even beget she's even worse.

Ashlynn isn't just terrified for her own fate but the fate of everyone in her house, her biomother, destined to die before Ashlynn even reaches adulthood, her stepmother and sisters, who will humiliate and eventually mutilate themselves and even the servants in her home, all dismissed for her solitary help, all for a prince she probably won't even prefer over Hunter.

(This is partly the reason why she hasn't much courage to stand up to Apple's plans despite being the most ostensibly sensible of the core royals and most likely to appeal otherwise, she's terrified of the possible consequences that come with defiance...)

Ashlynn has a very big heart and a selfless work ethic, and that love extends even to the people who her destiny insists aren't important, her empathy and worry for all being why she's unwilling to throw in with the Rebels like her boyfriend despite agreeing deep down with much of their ethos.

She doesn't want to get any of them hurt, in absence or by consequence... (again, Ashlynns family doesn't really trust grimm, a running theme as we'll see...)

Chapter 7: Ever After High Reimagined: Cedar Tonitori.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Cedar Tonitori

(She/they)

Daughter of pinnochio (Amazigh-Italian)

Pinnochio is known as a legendary troublemaker, but his daughter Cedar can't fathom doing anything of the sort herself! A nervous, passive homebody and a talented painter prone to bouts of anxious overthinking, who would much rather spend her time whiling away in her room working on her latest art project than even entertain the thought of running away to pleasure Island and getting into all sorts of trouble like her dad. Quite the irony she's been branded a rebel regardless for associating with raven queen, though considering that hanging out with Raven and her friends is helping Cedar come out of her shell, maybe this is for the better…

Likes: painting and drawing, photography, vintage fashion magazines, swimming, and freshening up with linseed oil and beeswax.

Dislikes: being unable to lie, fire, wood eating creatures (beavers, woodpeckers, woodlice ect), her strings being touched and being asked invasive questions all the time.

Spellbinding Style: 70s all the way down, fittingly enough for a girl made from an Atlas Cedar that first sprouted during that time period. Cedar loves to express themselves with loud, exaggerated looks of the period as well as more modest fare like turtlenecks and shortalls in her day-to-day.Cedar and Raven bonded quickly over thrifting and styling vintage pieces from the period, bonding quickly over their similar love for the decade's fashion and music. (along with a few of the other rebels, Cerise in particular is very partial to vintage Jock jackets herself...)

Companion creature: Clockwork, the avian centrepiece of her prized cuckoo clock. Cedar…isn't fond of most animals (birds and bugs in particular terrify them) but she's fine with Clockwork as it's not only a reminder of her dad and grandfather living far away, the latter of who carved the bird, and the rest of the clock by extent, as a going-away gift for his granddaughter, but also because unlike flesh and blood nature, wild, unpredictable and not good for Cedars anxiety, Clockwork, like…well clockwork without fail circles Cedars room every morning at 7am sharp singing to wake them up and once on the hour until sundown afterwards, it's a comforting presence.

Hexworthy vex: People harassing her with truths. Like her dad, Cedar cannot lie due to her nose growing with the act, and as a result Cedar and her dad have often been outright hounded by people demanding to know if a certain rumor going around that day is true, its at times like these when Cedars happy to have the rebels, particularly her best friend and roommate Cerise, to deal with people who act this way. (usually Blondie or those nasty little Crumb siblings…)

“Oh Curses” moment: Anxiety, Cedar is a girl with a lot of fears, some very rational and some not so, and as consequence is a bit paranoid and a massive hypochondriac, nervous every second animal or environment has the means to turn her into a rotten pile of woodchips and too anxious to leave the safe, familiar space of her dorm on her worst days.

Storied Secret: Cedars not really sure what it means to be a “real” girl, as far as they're concerned they've all the same physiological capabilities as her classmates, is it because she's made of wood, or constructed artificially, in that case there's a bunch of other kids in her year who wouldn't be considered “real” either, she's really not sure…

Deepest Wish: To be recognised for her talents as an artist instead of only ever given attention because of her truthsaying, Cedars put a lot of effort into practice and improvement into the former and it just bums them out to be treated like a glorified fairground sideshow attraction regardless…

Five Fantastical Facts:

Cedar likes to paint herself with all manner of colours and has taught herself how to use makeup, henna and bodypaint to in turn paint intricate patterns on her friends, a particular specialty being face painting, as Cedar likes to do intricate designs every morning that complement her 70s outfits.

Cedar plays the drums as a part of the Rebels.Compared to the other members she has the least experience as a musician, picking up the instrument in order to jam with her friends, and whilst they get a little anxious about letting down her bandmates, it's clear Cedars a natural at the instrument, her confidence growing duly thanks to the encouragement of her friends.

Cedars wooden body makes a very capable swimmer and given multiple affirmations that no, sparrow was lying about a family of beavers living in the deep end of EAH's pool has joined the schools swim team.

Another result of being made out of wood is Cedar not being able to feel pain in addition to having a dulled feeling of touch across their whole body. The exception to this are her puppet strings, which are comparatively hypersensitive and which Cedar is OK with only their closest family and friends touching even unintentionally.

People often ask Cedar if it's weird for her to see stuff made out of wood, asking if it's comparable to everything being made out of meat for a human (aka the old gingerbread man lives in gingerbread house debate), as disappointing as the answer tends to be,no it isn't.

Notes:

First off yes, I changed Cedars Surname, Wood is an OK surname but a bit non-indictive and bland, so now she's Cedar Tonitori, Tonitori being Italian for woodturner or wood carver, which I think Is personally a lot more fitting...

Anyways, Cedar I honestly think was the character who I hemmed the closest to the original, if only being more anxious and more of an overthinker. I just think all the plot points set up in g1, her frustration over being unable to lie and therefore be trusted and what that meant regarding her humanity, and wether it means shes even human at all are always some of my favorite things to do with a pinnochio story, and I think it goes well with Cedar being an artist and to a lesser extent, an overthinker.

Tbh that same reasonable closeness to the character of g1 Cedar has left me with not much else to say regarding their character, it's really within her relationships with other characters where the larger changes can be seen, most notably her best friend, roommate, and next weeks rebel entry...

Chapter 8: Ever After High Reimagined: Faybelle Thorn.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Faybelle Thorn

Nonbinary lesbian (fae/faer)

Daughter of the Dark Fairy (Irish)

Determined to be Ever Afters next top villain and put faer all into acting the perfect rogue. Faybelle Thorn nonetheless lives in a state of perpetual irritation; nobody seems to be taking their role as seriously as fae, most of all faer's fairytale's princess and protagonist Briar! An overly self-serious fairy prone to dramatics and with an arrogant streak a mile wide, Faybelle is utterly assured of faer own hidden brilliance in evil, and despite everybody treating fae as a pedantic annoyance is convinced that they'll all be sorry one day! (*Cue evil laughter*), if nothing else fae would at least like some of them, particularly a certain pink princess, to acknowledge all the work fae puts in!

Likes: villainy, plotting and scheming, cheerhexing, acting, tabletop wargaming.

Dislikes: being nice, having small useless wings, being shown up (especially by raven), frogs (gross and slimy) and being ignored.

Spellbinding Style: chic and professional, appropriate for an institution of learning like Ever After High, we're talking sweater vests, pencil skirts and-what do you mean fae dresses like a nerd! You will be hexed for your most outrageous insult!

Companion creature: Spindle the Pomeranian. The most adorable fluffy dog ever after! (If you're faybelle at least,to royals and rebels alike he's more like a spoiled, angry tumbleweed)

Hexworthy vex: being second fiddle to Raven queen, who despite being a magical powerhouse, always tries to make nice with her peers and actively dislikes the immense power she has inherited, and yet despite all the work faybelle puts in being evil everybody cowers before her instead of faybelle nonetheless, bah!

“Oh Curses” moment: A lack of awareness. Faybelle is highly intelligent but utterly tactless and arrogant, believing fae know people and what they want or like when fae often has no idea. These leaps in assumption often backfiring spectacularly in fae's face, ruining faes perfectly put together plots and schemes!

Storied Secret: Brair saved Faybelles chitinous hide from a man (and fairy) eating plant fae had once grown trying to upstage the plant-loving princess at her own hobby, it was the first and last time faybelle said thank you, and fae doesn't ever plan on doing so again…

Deepest wish: To be the most dastardly, megalomaniacal villain in all the land. Fae's mother would be so proud, Raven would cower and admit Faybelle is indeed the better villain, and maybe finally Briar would pay proper attention to faer and faer's schemes!

Five Fantastical Facts:

Faybelle is captain of the cheer team and head of the drama club, both of which fae runs with ruthless seriousness and military efficiency, though faer's not without the acting or aerobic chops to earn said positions of seniority, relishing fae's turns as some of Ever Afters most vile villains in the troupe’s productions.

Faybelle has small and wholly useless wings, a birth defect fae shares with faer's mother that leaves fae unable to fly like other fairies, an attribute that certainly doesn't help faybelles sour temperament, and no, using magic or technology to fly is cheating, fairy flight it has to be done with wings and wings alone!

Like all faires faybelle is very short, 3 feet and five inches to be precise without shoes. However unlike most fairies who use flight to reclaim the distance faybelle is forever stuck at chest height, or waist height if your name is Briar Beauty or Raven Queen, such an indignity!

Faybelle is closest with her mother more than anyone else in the world, the two are practically joined at the hip, doing everything together outside of term time, the thing is that had it not been for the Evil queen, who faybelle despises for stealing faer mothers role in the previous sleeping beauty story, fae's mother would likely have been killed by briars father. The fact that Faybelle would likely have ended up like Ginger or grimm forbid fae's detested rival Raven in such circumstances vexes fae,so fae tries not to dwell on it too much…

Faybelle is very into tabletop wargaming, considering it good practice for commanding real armies upon fae taking up her destiny and owning several large armies of intricately hand painted figurines to do battle with, its a pity then that at ever after high the only person willing to join in fae's games is fellow drama club member and resident nerd Humphrey Dumpler, yet again Faybelle is ignored by the masses!

Notes:

I know this might sound controversial, but I kinda prefer faybelle as more of a self-serious nerd to the originals mean girl characterisation...

In my opinion Faybelle first and foremost works best as a foil, particularly to Raven and Briar. (And farrah and even apple, but those will come in time...) Faybelle is a straight laced, straight-A student to Briars devil may care party girl and raven's artsy cultural rebel, as well as a spirited and boastful type to faer more apathetic or subdued protagonist and one-way rival, beyond just their parts and views regardless of destiny (there may also be an element of opposites attract with the former I will admit...)

I also like the idea faer more enjoys the process of villainy, the plans, the theatrics and the like (most notably the attention that comes with putting an evil plot into play) more than the actual result of said villainy, needless to say Faybelle, one of the most diehard royals, may not be as up to it as fae says or wishes...

Also of note is the situation regarding faybelles wings, I always thought faybelle’s original wings looked sort of crumpled and torn, which I translated into fae lacking the ability to use said wings. (It's based on a famous mutation found in fruit flies that causes similar effects, i thought it was a fun and fitting reference for an academic character)

(Also all fairies use fae/faer pronouns, their means of personal presentation are beyond human comprehension and no two fairy really presents the same, bunch of subtle differences and all...)

Chapter 9: Ever After High Reimagined: Cerise Hood.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Cerise Hood

Pansexual (She/Her)

Daughter of Red Riding Hood (mixed Hopi Indigenous)

The traditional red riding hood is sweet and demure, the fairytale picture of feminine innocence. Cerise hood isn't any of these things,a cynical, closed-off and generally mean spirited tomboy with a big family secret, she and her twin sister Ramona are the children of red riding hood and the big bad wolf, raised in secret by their respective parent in vastly different settings, and now separated after two disastrous and chaotic years together. But who knows, maybe making friends with raven and the other rebels, even if she's not too confident in their plans to defy their destinies, can help assuage her sour mood,if for a little bit…

Likes: sports, playing guitar, meat, long runs and angry grunge music.

Dislikes: stuck up royals ,chocolate and sweet foods, baths, people being invasive around Cedar, and her mother’s side of the family.

Spellbinding Style: Grungy Jock fare such as varsity jackets, ripped jeans and band tees, as well as the ever-present red hood, most importantly involving enough layers and tinted sunglasses to hide her more… lycanthropic traits.

Companion creature: For her first year before the incident with Ramona Cerise had Carmine ,a Jacob’s lamb. Now however he can't be bought into school and stayed behind with Cerise’s mother on the family farm in Hood Hollow, and as much as she won't admit it Cerise misses her woolly, troublemaking companion terribly…

Hexworthy vex: Not being allowed on to join in any of the schools sports teams because that's “not what is expected of red riding hood” that among other excuses are nonsense and Cerise knows it. She's a better Bookball player than half the student body, even that dumb blond showoff Daring!

“Oh Curses” moment: Distrust, Cerise…isn't good with people and often assumes the worst in them, or that they're out to get her, as a result Cerise has few friends and isn't really out to make more, and is used to folks (helga and gus typically, the little goblins that they are) making fun of her for that fact, though the other rebels immediately jump to her defence, which is nice, if a bit new…

Storied Secret: The whole “wolf child” thing obviously, not that she's too good at hiding it, her standoffish attitude and eccentric habits being reasonably well known throughout the student body. Cerise both thankful and hates that Cedar, her roommate and best friend, who is always inclined to tell the truth if asked, has absolutely no clue, Cerise hates the fact that the wooden girl can't be wholly trusted with such a thing…

Deepest wish: For her family to be whole for the first time. Beyond all her sullenness and snark Cerise loves her parents and sister and doesn't like being away from any of them, and as much as the Rebels does try to assuage these feelings of isolation, Cerise’s cynical nature means she feels not much can be done regarding the matter of her family, she can't even tell Cedar after all, what real hope is there for her...?

Five Fantastical Facts:

  • Cerise is a year older than her peers, having been held back a year for “the incident” that occurred in her first year, still spoken in hushed, cryptic tones by the student body and that Cerise is unwilling to talk about herself. This same incident lead to Ramona to get sent to reform school, which may have something to do with it…
  • Cerise is the Rebels guitarist, her father used to regularly write songs for and serenade her mother in their youth and still owns his old acoustic guitar from those days, Cerise however prefers an electric guitar, a louder, cruder and angrier instrument, as well as the grungy 90s rock it's often featured in.
  • When not in school, Cerise lives in Hood Hollow with her mothers family, and according to Cerise, a backwards and boring place that's too far out from anything! Between this and the rifts between her and her maternal family, particularly her grandmother, Cerise spends most of her time in her room or working with the animals dawn to dusk, anything not to be accosted by them to be honest.
  • Cerise, typical of her canine heritage isn't usually one for sweets or vegetables. At lunch Cerise is usually chowing down on something meaty, and if she does decide to eat something green its usually drowned in gravy or peanut butter and subsequently washed down with bovril, much to the discomfort of her friend Hunter, an avowed vegan himself.
  • Regardless of not being let on any of the sports teams at Ever After High, Cerise remains among the most active of her peers, spending long hours on runs throughout the fields and forests surrounding Ever After High or kicking around a football, practicing tricks. It's on a few these runs Cerise has spotted something very interesting indeed in the woods,or rather someone, but having had to keep a secret herself her whole life, her lips stay shut, she knows what it's like after all…

Notes:

The original Cerise as a character I find a lot of fun as a character, probably my second favourite after Ravens classic "villainous heritage but who doesn't want to be evil" shtick being the child of a villain and a hero whose not sure who she truly will be, at least initially, as Ramona's later introduction sorta screwed that whole thing up.

So you're probably wondering why I wrote Cerise as sour and cynical as I did?

First off, I kinda like the idea that Cerise and Ramonas parents sorta had to pick one each of their twins to follow a certain destiny and screwed up spectacularly (though to be fair they didnt entirely know...) , with Cerise acting more typically "villainous" whilst Ramona seems the absolute type to disregard her mother regarding danger in the woods... (I don't want to talk too much regarding Ramona right here and now,she has her own profile planned for spring 2026 and I understand that's a ways away but I'd rather talk about her there...)

Regardless of all that, I don't think Cerise’s meaner traits are a result of her heritage, hell both her parents are genuinely nice, loving people, but instead a result of her environment. Cerise really does have a big heart, and she's understandably upset about...well everything, her parents who love each other and their daughters not being able to see each other, her being treated as a fragile, waifish victim in spite of the reality of being a smart, athletic person, she's absolutely sick of it but sees no way out of her circumstances, and so can do nothing but wallow in her anger and sadness at the whole mess, especially since Ramona, the only person who ever really understood her plight as her sister, is long gone.

Cerise being the most cynical rebel is really all important. Raven, being the most empathetic of the Rebels can tell Cerise does indeed have a big heart underneath all her layers of gruffness, especially regarding how protective and assertive she can be with Cedar, having zero tolerance for peoples shenanigans around the wooden girl, and Cerise’s naysaying regarding the Rebels plans tends to give her motivation to prove Cerise, and any less visible qualms she or the others might have wrong. Raven and by extent Maddie,Cedar and Hunter (despite their relationship being the most volatile out of the five) really do believe in their friend, and they believe with enough confidence in herself so can she.

Chapter 10: Ever After High Reimagined: Daring Charming.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Daring Charming

Younger Son of Prince Charming (English-Persian)

Daring Charming is heir to the Charming throne, and doesn't he know it. Apple Whites future prince charming, bold, gallant and oh so handsome if he doesn't say so himself (not to mention having an ego so large it creates its own gravity), Daring really does have it all… The crown prince of Ever After High's social scene, Daring is captain of the Bookball team,an integral part of the student council and probably prom and thronecoming king when those inevitably roll around, he's living an absolutely charming life if he doesn't say so himself! (That is if you don't count an upstart goth and a mysterious, renegade Knight trying to spoil his good time…)

Likes: Apple white, looking his fairest and working out, performing heroic deeds, bookball and adoring crowds of fans.

Dislikes: Raven Queen, villains, monsters and evildoers ,being upstaged, bad hair days and not having anything to do.

Spellbinding Style: proper princely clothes befitting of an heir to the throne, everything being a designer brand and in the shiniest golds, purest ivories or most regal of blues. And Darings never without his trusty crown to boot or his winning smile, though he does have to be careful with the extremely potent gleam that reflects off of said perfect teeth.

Companion creature: P-Hawk, a luecistic peacock and a symbol of his mother's family and heritage, pity then that in contrast to his noble and knightly owner P-Hawk is a royal pain, terrorising servants and shredding the gardens of the Charmings castle and generally being a menace, as such, Daring elected not to take him with him to ever after high…

Hexworthy vex: Lately Daring has been running afoul of a mysterious vigilante called the White Knight, who swoops in and saves the day before Daring even gets there, and not even bothering to stay and bask in the glory afterward, the absolute nerve! He's going to have to brush up on his swordplay if he ever wants to find out whose behind that oddly familiar helmet.

“Oh Curses” moment: Daring’s ego knows no bounds but he's genuinely skilled in most areas to back it up, its when he isn’t when problems start to arise… Daring has a nasty habit of freezing dead in his tracks when he's not sure what to do about something and he's not at all fond of it, especially since it both makes him look an absolute fool and could be genuinely dangerous for him if it were to happen in the midst of a monster battle…

Storied Secret: Daring isn't a natural blond, all three of the charming kids have their mother's dark brown hair, but darings father is insistent Daring and Darling have theirs done blond like his and silver-white respectively. Daring does not object to this as he fears his father would mistake him for Dexter if the colour ever ran out.

Deepest wish: To continue to live his life in a way that makes his parents, particularly his father, proud as the next king charming, and to save his beloved Apple from a poison enchantment cast by the evil queen and take her as his queen (that is if a certain other miss queen ever gets her head in the game and gets around to properly evildoing that is!...)

Five Fantastical Facts:

  • None of the Charming kids are honestly that close to each other nowadays, compared to the three being inseparable during spellementary school, time and differing expectations causing a rift between the siblings. Daring doesn't think much of it, especially because he's always been a bit separate from the other two on account of Dex and Darling being twins. In addition, the charming kids don't have many close relationships or friendships between them, Daring usually sticking by his beloved Apple, her group of friends, and his father, the primary influence on his sons lifestyle, among other things…
  • For someone so archetypically “laddish” Darings surprisingly a bit of a neat freak, his room always being spotlessly clean and intrinsically well-sorted, not a stray article of clothing or old snack wrapper in sight, this extends to his own physical hygiene, his love of mirrors serving both as a means to admire his perfect face but to spot check for any potential flaws or blemishes,no matter how insignificant they happen to seem…
  • On top of this, Daring has a strictly regimented workout routine and diet, having the perfect 8 pack and biceps that are not only toned enough to send his many fans into fits of swooning and awe but strong enough to lift any enchanted blade are imperative not only to his ego but his success as a hero, after all.
  • Daring is captain of EAH's bookball team, as his dad was before him. Daring has been playing the sport since he was young, despite his esteemed heritage however, Daring, ever honourable, would much rather train with the rest of the team and win genuinely through skill than the easier option of using his family's wealth and repute to influence the competition. It does help that he's both a genuinely skilled sportsman and that there's always a crowd of fans feverently turning out to support him.
  • Daring…doesn't entirely trust Raven, and worries her rebellion is a means towards something darker. After all its too much of a coincidence that both Raven and her mother went against their destinies. Specifically he's worried that many of his good, upstanding classmates and friends like Hunter and Cedar are being suckered into something, and he's especially worried about his beloved Apple, who has kindly volunteered herself to be Ravens roommate this year…

Notes:

First and foremost, I like Daring as a sort of friendly antagonist, beyond an egotistical streak a mile wide and love of the limelight, being a bit of a chauvinist and actively believing in and benefitting from the destiny system he's a genuinely good guy who despite his high social standing doesn't abuse his power,as he thinks it isn't "knightly". (Not to mention hes a bit of a minor celebrity being a prince and all and he's aware that the media would be all over him if he acts a fool, and how that not only reflects on him but his family)
Really, Daring is quite well liked by most of his peers, he just comes off more antagonistic as quite a bit of ever after high is from Raven's perspective, who he doesn't know he's acting unfairly towards. (primarily because there's less repercussions for being judgemental or suspicious of villain kids, especially one as unorthodox as Raven)

Another thing of note is yes,Daring is straight and genuinely in love with Apple, even if she is a lesbian very deep into comphet and isn't aware that she doesn't love him back, romantically at least. As previously mentioned they're genuinely quite close and hes very supportive of apples efforts to get raven to properly follow her destiny, tbh I've always imagined Daring being a bit of a Ken (as in the barbie movie) type and so he, and his attitude regarding apple and their relationship, reflects that.

Chapter 11: Ever After High Reimagined: Darling Charming.

Chapter Text

Darling Charming

Lesbian

Daughter of Prince Charming (English-Persian)

The princess's princess, eldest child of King and Queen charming and the only person to match and exceed apple as the fairest in the land. Beyond all the extravagant balls and fanciful outfits however Darling is a girl with many secrets, chiefly among them her secret life moonlighting as the white knight, a mysterious masked vigilante on horseback who defends the innocent and fights for justice wherever its in short supply, and despite her trappings of perfection,is in truth a deeply eccentric young woman, passionate, honourable and determined for her noble, knightly cause. If only both her lives weren't so terribly lonely…

Likes: Horses, girls, swordplay, heroism and chivalry and truly outrageous rococo stylings.

Dislikes: Living a double life, injustice, being objectified, guns (so dishonourable…),and how her dad treats dexter, even if she feels she can't do much about it.

Spellbinding Style: A maximalist mashup of knightly fare and rococo fashion,we're talking hoop skirts and chainmail, delicate lace and sturdy plate and big, extravagant hairdos and helmets, or at least ideally, as due to Darlings current circumstances she's unfortunately forced to choose one or the other.

Companion creature: Sir Gallopad, though technically he's Dexters Horse. Dexter however is no equestrian, actively avoiding participating in such activities knowing disaster will inevitably ensue, so has no problem with his sister taking Gallopad for joyrides to commit acts of derring-do. They both can tell Gallopad much prefers Darlings company anyways…

Hexworthy vex: the feeling of powerlessness in her family's current dynamic. Darling knows and wants to be something more than a smile and a wave and something to be won, and although she doesn't show it, her fathers insistence on all of them following a strict dynamic as a “perfect” fairytale family is driving her crazy!

“Oh Curses” moment: Darling has come very close to accidentally revealing her secret passions on myriad occasions. In truth Darling is a very lonely person on account of her double life, with few people (ie, Dexter) knowing and having nobody to really talk to about her love for swords and vigilantism, but isn't willing to have her eccentricities be known for the selfish fear of what could happen to her, especially in the likely event Headmaster Grimm got involved.

Storied Secret: Besides the whole double life as a Knight thing, obviously, Darling is pretty sure she exclusively likes women, which when your dad is very set on having her be a part of a “perfect” fairytale marriage, married to a man… yeah she's going to keep that fact under wraps,at least whilst she's living under his roof…

Deepest wish: To be able to live as both the Princess and Knight she wants to be,free from the expectations of her dad and Grimm, until recently this seemed an unattainable desire but with the emergence of the Rebels…maybe there's a chance?, if she's willing to trust her secret identity with them that is…

5 Fantastical Facts:

  • A skilled swordswoman. Darling taught herself swordplay from an early age and due to having to scavenge her weapons has developed an agile, terrifying and wholly unique fighting style, wielding a rapier blade in one hand and a typical slashing sword in the other. Outside of her armour, Darling has found her natural agility useful in a myriad of situations as a princess, and in private trains in gymnastics and aerobics to keep said skills sharp.
  • Speaking of armour, Darlings current ensemble is made up of odds and ends stolen from her family's armoury, and being made for 6 foot something warriors as opposed to a 5’6 princess (5’9 including her hair) means its a bit…loose in some places. Darling would love to know how to make her own suit of armour one day come to think of it, though how one would smith chainmail completely anonymously is beyond her.
  • Beneath all of said armour, Darling is actually quite buff, as it turns out running around in plate mail and fighting monsters and ne'er do wells is excellent for building muscle, however Darling is well aware that her toned physique would not be considered “ladylike” by polite society, and as such her preferred poofy garments, in addition to looking super adorable and oh-so stylish, prove useful for hiding said gains from her prying parents, or even worse, Blondie!
  • Every week, at a specific time and place away from everything, Darling has a duel with a Knight in red armour who shimmers in and out of reality and from the scant conversation she's had with him seems to be stuck in the remnants of wonderland, Darling wishes she knew a way to free him and properly meet her friend and sparring partner.
  • Darling shares the bulk of her classes with one Apple white, but despite being around each other for most of the week between classes and being her brother Daring’s destined princess ,Darling has never really had the chance to talk to apple, who acts flighty and standoffish whenever Darling as much as looks at her, which Darling herself thinks is a darn shame, especially since apple’s very cute…

Notes:

I might be sounding like a broken record at this point, but if it wasn't obvious, Darling is one of my favorite eah characters.

The princess/knight thing I love, but beyond that I love how selfless her whole character really is. Darling, unlike many of the Rebels has little stake if destiny isn't true or not and actively benefits from the system, but defies that to be a protector and a hero to those less fortunate instead of sitting around reaping the benefits of an unfair system.

If anything I think Darling best gets the idea of what a leader or ruler means out of her siblings, and that despite her father making Daring his heir, Darling is the one who looks out for and wants best for the populous, and deeply represents the fact that she's basically ordered to just stand around looking pretty and doing nothing. (Her vigilantism meaning she's outside of the well to do bubble that dominates Ever after high's social scene might have something to do with that, alongside her kinship with the displaced wonderlandians, being a little mad herself...)

Also of note, I thought it'd be fun if Darling was a distinctly feminine character, more often the knight in many of these "queer/sapphic knight/princess" yarns is the more masculine one so I thought it'd be fun to switch it up a bit, especially as a very femme trans woman myself who loves similarly feminine (if more alternative) fashion myself... (who is the princess in this dynamic I hear you ask, you'll have to wait and see...)

Chapter Text

Dexterous “Dexter” Charming

Bisexual

Elder Son of Prince Charming (English-Persian)

Dexter is the forgotten middle child of the three charming kids, and boy, doesn't he know it… Compared to his superstar siblings Dexter, mousy and straightforward with a penchant for tech, has no discernable destiny as of yet despite fervent, and unwelcome speculation.

Dexters plans for the year, whatever those were got thrown out of the window when a small pep talk he gives on the eve of Raven Queen’s signing snowballs into active rebellion against everything the establishment stands for, destiny included and since then he's sort of hovered around her eclectic friends/band, though it's becoming clear his attachment to their gothy bassist is clearly deeper than just a simple friendship…

Likes: videogames, coding, books, scarves and Taylor Quick's music.

Dislikes: his dad,horses,tech-illiteracy,overly complicated outfits and being compared to people.

Spellbinding Style: plane-jane princely fare. Compared to his brother and sister Dexter is very no nonsense when it comes to fashion, wearing pretty much what's expected of him as a prince in public and comfortable jeans and sweaters when not, though he does admittedly have a fondness for scarves, ascot and the like…

Companion creature: Cottonhorn the rabbit, who is technically darlings pet but always liked Dexter better, and who likes to hang out with him while doing programming and yes, jokes about him being a rabbit when computers are supposed to have mice have been made, they're typically not very funny…

Hexworthy vex: Techno-illiteracy. Dexter has a reputation for being good with tech and as such often gets called aside by friends and family to help with tech problems, sometimes however these “problems” are insultingly easy to fix, and Dexter wishes more people would actually try to troubleshoot their tech before defaulting to giving him a ring.

“Oh Curses” moment: Try as he might, dexters resentment, particularly towards his parents and younger brother does get the best of him sometimes, his need to prove himself better or more particularly cleverer than his fawned upon little brother can in the long run, royally screw him over…

Storied Secret: Dexter is actually his father's elder son, and would have been his heir had it not been for his father pulling some strings to get daring the role, and by extent the esteem and glory that came with it. Granted, this is a pretty open secret, but one that King and Queen charming don't especially in the public zeitgeist, neither does Dexter for that matter, as its lead to a bunch of very nasty rumors about him being cursed, hexed or otherwise…

Deepest wish: For his parents to stop comparing him to his brother regardless of aspect, dexters no good with a sword and certainly no horseman (as a matter of fact he's quite scared of them) but he's skilled in many other areas wouldn't you know, not that his parents, particularly his father would notice compared to Daring’s latest bout of dragonslaying…

5 Fantastical Facts

  • Dexter is a part of the technical team of the Eah drama club, being as good with computers as he is he usually handles the sound and lighting aspects of rehearsals. He in turn lends this expertise to the rebels, acting as a roadie of sorts for their gigs. (Not to mention he gets to hang out with Raven a bit more than usual doing so…)
  • Despite what his geeky stylings might imply, like his siblings Dexter is actually very naturally athletic, he's just not been given many chances to really show it off.Time and time again during spellementary and prep school he tried out for sports team after sports team, but was always brushed over or admitted only as a substitute player. Though considering that Daring was a part of many of those teams, Dexter thinks his dad might have something to do with that last thing, wouldn't want to show up the family's golden boy after all…
  • Dexter spends most of his free time in ever after highs vast library, reading every last thing he can get his hands on to pass the time, losing himself and track of time in tomes upon tomes of literature. And though usually a solitary pastime hes lately found some common ground with fellow bookworm Raven Queen, who being a budding author herself as well as a Rebel and a rockstar (is there nothing she can't do…) likes to read out the latest drafts and chapters of her work as he's setting up tech for Rebels shows.
  • All of Dexters time reading has caused him to absorb a bevy of trivia and general knowledge, beyond being terrifyingly good at quizzes, he's also not half bad with riddles, and as a result has struck up an unorthodox friendship with a few of the Wonderlandians, in particular maddie hatter on account of a certain few mutual connections and friends, on account of being able to understand and decipher the riddles they love so much.
  • Despite his love of some more typically geeky interests, such as a love of star trek, dexters tastes in pop culture are actually pretty pedestrian, he's particularly fond of the music of Taylor Quick, having seen her live on her “Ages” tour, as well as rubbishy reality TV. (he also takes comfort in knowing that for all his faults, his dad never signed the Charmings up for something like that, like Daring’s spotlight-loving ego needed any more of an increase)

Notes:

I kinda like the concept of Dexter being the most "villainous" Charming kid, and by extent the most human.

Not that he's a bad guy or anything, but a myriad of factors, his admittedly selfish resentment of his brother and father and the lack of an destiny, and by extent expectation to act any more heroic than your average noble, not to mention him being out of the limelight compared to the rest of his family means he's more likely to be underhanded, deceitful or otherwise.

If anything he's a foil to his twin sister Darling,as while both are willing to break the rules for justice, Darling wants justice for all, whilst Dexter wants justice primarily for himself. However the pitfalls of both sides, Darling being lonely and isolated and Dexter often screwing himself over are respectively systemic and self-served.

Finally, despite all my badmouthing, I do reiterate that Dexter really is a good person, he's just been beaten down so much he just doesn't see it in himself to be as extraordinary as he could be, despite all his snark and sarcasm at his circumstances, Dexter needs to be less cynical and really push himself to be more than anyone expects of him, hence why he's really a rebel associated royal than a full-blown rebel. (Again, Darling could be the opposite, a rebel whose close association with royals means she can't be public about it,not yet anyway...)

I just want to say a massive, massive thank you to everyone whose stuck around for these, this won't be the last profile, or the last time you'll see these characters in written media (though I do tend to be a notorious procrastinator,so keep that in mind)
Anyways, I hope above all else you've liked these profiles, I'll hopefully see you for the next ones come march 2026...
